He was not born with the expectation of inheriting the crown and he did not want it. All he wanted was the quiet life of an English country gentleman. But when duty summoned him, he did not shrink from his responsibility to his country and people even during the years of mortal danger to Britain. A truly great King. Memory eternal!

My mother and father were living in London at this time . The nation knew the king was ill , his death was still a a great sadness to the world . As the commentator says , sixteen years in which the world changed and suffered as never before . And the duty of a man who was never expecting to be king was unwavering. He set a standard.

Hindsight is a marvellous thing. It allows those that wish to, the ability to criticise even monarchs (former and then current) who could not possibly see what we now know. In this case, the man you criticised, a former Sovereign, like the balance of humanity alive at that time, could not have possibly imagined or realised what was to come. He was simply acting as a British envoy of peace and co-operation I believe, and would have solidly been acting in the interests of Britain and the Commonwealth at the time, and not that of Germany. Remember, at that time, a lot of people in Britain and elsewhere were actually inspired by the ‘New German Order’ displayed until the horrors of later years came to pass. No person alive at the time had any conception of that unlike yourself with the power of historical knowledge.

The King as a Constitutional monarch did precisely what was needed when faced by war. He understood the nature of the Hitler threat, and why it was important to face it, and not trust Hitler any more. And he supported those who argued against suŕrender. And ultimately he posed the problem for the, defeatist, appeasement lobby, that they would have to go ahead in the knowledge that the King did not support them, and the people would know this. He then gave the country what it needed in the war- encouragement , hope , and the example of staying on and sharing the risk.
He, and his father, also both passed on to his daughter what they believed the monarch should and should not do, which with some changes to reflect changing times, is reflected in how she saw her role, how she performed her duties , and how she responded herself in talking to the nation at difficult times, when it again needed a solid steadying voice.
A hard , unexpected, unwanted, job- bravely and well done.

Dwight Eisenhower hopefully not for another few years yet. The Queens funeral will be at Westminster Abbey though she will be carried on a gun carriage from the Abbey to Marble Arch in a similar way that her father was.

MrAeronuk1 no according to the Guardian she will be driven in a hearse from Marble Arch to Windsor. I don’t think they use the Royal Train like they used to.

The guardian article is called operation London Bridge and it was written back in 2017 shortly after Prince Philip retired

MrAeronuk1 good question, so the crowds in London can see her one last time. Traditionally from Queen Victoria to George VI, the monarch has always had their state funeral at Windsor after lying in state at Westminster (with the exception of Victoria who didn’t lie in state, also Edward VIII had a private funeral as he had abdicated)
Trouble is when she dies it will probably be 70 years since her father’s funeral and the world has changed a lot since then. They can’t have the funeral at Windsor because one presumes all the world’s media wouldn’t fit in compared to 1952. Also considering she is the longest reigning monarch (and a record that will probably never be broken again) the Abbey pays tribute to that fact.
The Queen Mother was taken by hearse in 2002 because she was simply a former queen consort rather than sovereign. Queen Mary was taken by hearse to Windsor in 1953 in the same way.
So as the Queen is the sovereign she will be carried through London in the same way her predecessors were.

@@123brownjames HM's parents and sibling are buried at Windsor. As I recall, there is a space near them where HM and Prince Philip will be buried.

King George sounded like he was a wonderful man as well as King. May he ever rest in peace. Condolences from The United States.

No, Ma'am! He was a tyrant and brutal king. During his reign and World War ll, he created a famine in Bengal confiscating all the godowns of food across the country to feed his armies to fight the war. And the wholesalers, retailers (grocery shopkeepers) increased the price of it (food) like rice, potatoes everything. Only the government employees, politicians, businessmen and riches survived. Many were impoverished and many were perished by malnutrition, starvation and other diseases. About 3.8 Million died.
