Woah this dialogue was superb. It simultaneously helped ground the story emotionally and help flesh out the philosophical ideas of haytham so that you can at least empathize with why a smart well intentioned person might believe as he does. Its so unfortunate that so many game companies let the "core" of their story fall into the background to focus on action.

Probably runtime issue. Most people don't like too long cutscene and probably Ubisoft doesn't has time to animate it as well.
If assassin's creed were JRPG I could see that full dialog to be implemented in the game.

It was good they cut it because Haytham wanted to pursue the truce but Connor wasn't because of having Achilles in his ear. And it also shows that Connor was slowly making these mistakes and were his and Achilles own. And Connor has to deal with the fact that he could've done more for peace but gave up too easily and misjudged his father.

​@@shackal2584 No, Connor rejected the truce when he scrutinized Washington for leading the attack on his village and Haytham for witholding that fact from him for so long.
Haytham knew everything was damned to hell at this point and while he was still loyal to the templars despite his disillusionment with them, he could never bring himself to kill his son. So that's why he stayed behind to stall for Charles and allowed Connor to finally end him, while delivering this eye opening speech to him in hopes he can learn something from it, as seen in Connor's deleted epilogue speech.

Haytham may be the “bad guy” but you can’t deny he makes good points. In a democratic society, the people are supposed to have the power, but our elected officials rarely act in our best interests. They’re meant to serve us, but oftentimes the reverse is true.

Haytham wasnt a villain here he was an antagonist, those two could totally be different things since an antagonist is someone who counters the protagonist sometimes the antagonist could just be a hero themselves just look at Captain America Civil War, Cap was Tony's antagonist and vice versa.

I'm always bewildered by people discovering that both Templars and Assassins had a point like 'dude, what you were doing? During Assassin's Creed 1 came out?' that game has already covered both of their ideologies, the Altaïr's entire journey was him realising both Assassins and Templar ultimately wanted was good for humanity.

Haytham said this to Connor to show him that no matter how many Templars the assassins kill, they'll always rise again. Connor was fighting a war he couldn't win and that's what Haytham was trying to show him by allowing his own son to kill him (Yes he was aware of the hidden blade), plus his feelings didn't allow Haytham to kill his son outright.
"I should've killed you long ago", in other words: I should've killed you before my personal feelings for you got in the way.

@@amarmuzakki2250 Yes, Haytham had plenty of emotions for his son, he just didn't know how to show it to him. He had to appear as a professional and harsh man in front of his allies and enemies, even his own son. But there was a glimmer of fondness for his son within Haytham, although he doesn't show it to us until the very last moments of his life.
Haytham was torn between his allegiance to the Templars and the love he had for his son and it reached a point where Haytham concluded that the best way to ensure that his son lives is to sacrifice himself by letting Connor kill him. Notice how he deliberately removed his hand from Connor's arm (Haytham knew it had the hidden blade, that's why he kept it down so that he could give him his final speech) and then he just proceeded to choke Connor in order to push his son into killing him. Haytham was a man who didn't know how to bond with his son who had joined the enemy, but he was incredibly proud of him nontheless.
Haytham had many chances to kill Connor, like during the execution sequence, ambushing Connor at the church and even in this very scene where a seriously injured Connor who had no idea Haytham was there lying in wait for him. Not once did he act on it because he loved his son, and he didn't even expect to leave this duel alive, as stated in his final journal entry.

It's why I love this game's story so much. A lot of people hate it, but it's pretty much the only one in the series that actually shows how history isn't black and white. Here, you see the Templars point of view and, as a result, see how they're...actually right on many of the things they stand for.

Sort of. If you read the novel Assassin's Creed Forsaken it makes Haytham kind of hypocritical because he was specifically indoctrinated into the Templar order by his father's killer, Reginald Birch
