- Hi! Thanks to www.pcbway.com for sponsoring this video
Years before Apple released the titanium Apple Watch Ultra, they released a different titanium product, the original PowerBook G4 laptop.
Today we will look at what the made the TiBook special, and what made it need a total redesign after 3 short years.
We also will throw in a few upgrades and talk about a special task I have for it in the future.
Thanks for watching.

I stumbled across this channel like 2 days ago and so glad I did. Love what this channel is about
Thanks Warren! Happy to have you here!
Another awesome video! Loved learning about the Tibook. I don't have one with a DVI connector in my collection (only the original 400MHz VGA one), so particularly enjoyed seeing one of those for the first time. Can't wait to see more videos from The Basement!
Thanks Josh! Looking forward to your next video too!
@@TheBasementChannel Me too! Lol
Really enjoyed the video, I like that your putting it to use as server. My friend had one of these, he was so proud of it, unfortunately he tripped over its power cable and sent it flying off the desk. It landed on the hinge cracking it.
What a heartbreaking story! MagSafe must have saved a lot of heartache. Thanks for the comment!
Ahh the days when you could upgrade your mac by just sliding a latch rather than not at all. Great video!
It was so easy!
Great content 😊
Another outstanding video!
Thanks Michael! Love your work as well! Everyone reading this go check out RTODs channel!
Get you in a shirt!! Another great video ;)
Lil bit fancy 😆 thanks Rich 👍
Not a Powerbook, but I remember the Macbook pro 17" I had from 2008 to 2017. I'll be damned if that wasn't the best computer I ever had. There's something about Macintosh laptops that are just unbeatable.
I had one of those! Mine had 2 logic board replacements and eventually finally died in 2014. Was a powerhouse in its day, I did a lot of work on that machine.
@@TheBasementChannel Powerhouse indeed! I wish they never discontinued the 17" line. Damn things felt (and admittedly weighed) like a portable desktop lol.
True .... and now all this is repeated with the new M1 ...
Agree...... I had one .... :) ..... loved it
@@NorthKoreaUncovered in Romania I bought some for the equivalent of 130 euros in local currency. if you want one let me know. I have 3 lol
Oh wow, yeah server! I use a first gen MacPro1,1 with Tiger in the same manner you plan to use that PBG4 👍
Awesome! I did think about using a desktop machine, but a laptop with its built in keyboard and screen is so convenient! And quiet!
Ive alwayse wanted a Titanium or Aluminum Powerbook just to tinker with, even though im a PC guy, especially different linux distros and etc.most I have located for purchase were ither too rough or too expensive.
Yes they’re getting a bit hard to find now, but really are a lovely machine
Mine lasted through undergrad and well beyond. Never had any issue with the hinges. The motherboard eventually died, and Apple wanted $1700 to replace it. I moved to white plastic iBooks, which turned out to have all sorts of issues with the plastic their bodies were made from.
Yes treated right they were a great machine!
I appreciate your SSD upgrade. But I wonder that, rather then 64GB SSD, is it possible to put more and more "big" SSD?
Absolutely, go as big as the OS can handle!
Hey there, nice video, just discovered your channel! I'm an Apple collector in Australia too, based in Sydney. Where are you?
Hey there! I’m in Tassie. Hit me up on Instagram if you want to chat about old macs 😄👍 love your organ playing btw!
Did you cleaned up the fan and applied new thermal paste? make sure it doesn't overheat, it's old and the thermal paste must be dry af
I have wondered about this. Many say replacing the thermal paste is not needed due to the minimal results but many say it is needed. Cleaning the fans without a doubt is needed though.
Lovely video, well put together. Are you using Final Cut, iMovie or Premiere pro on your 2017 iMac? Seems fairly high quality for such an old machine. I gave up on editing with my Mac after it took too long to scrub through content and it was just crashing way too much. I use premiere pro on a PC now, but even that is a little choppy. I was considering getting an M2 Mac mini when they come out.
Thanks Al, I appreciate your kind comment. The 2017 iMac is running latest version of FCP. I’ve found it’s generally very fast, and I’ve been using FCP for the last 15 years so I know my way around it. I did wonder about moving to Resolve before the M series chips were released as I was worried about being locked into 1 architecture, but now with the new M series it’s given me a great upgrade path. My iMac is probably still doing well as I bought a fully maxed out model at the time, which pays dividends over the long run. I did intend to upgrade to the M powered 27” iMac, before I realised it doesn’t exist 😢. So now I’m just waiting to see what’s coming, no hurry yet. My ideal would be a M2Pro mini, but I don’t want to give up my 5k display, and I don’t want to pay apple again to essentially get the same display I already have now.
@@TheBasementChannel Thanks for that! I've got a 4K display for my PC, which wasn't super expensive, hopefully I can connect up to an M2 Mini when they come out. Supposedly that will be around March next year, but as I live in NZ, that'll probably be March 2024 ;).
Yeah I’ll probably have to downgrade to 4K to stay in budget. Which is a pain cause I like to have the option with a 5k screen to display 4K video natively in the timeline and still have room for interface elements.
hey the m2 Mac mini just came out, are you still considering getting it?
@@bluppy1 yeah I'm going to compare it with one of those high end Intel NUC's that use NVIDIA cards.
Super cool video…
Thank you!
What is the operating system exactly?
Mac OS X Server 10.2 (Jaguar) ?
Yes that’s it 👍
Soes the Titanium have two PCMCIA slots, one internal and one external?
Pretty much. The original airport card was a modified PC Card. It won’t fit in a standard pcmcia slot though.
I'm thinking of getting one of these, but they're all just in such awful condition with the paint issues and the ones that aren't are new MacBook Pro prices.
Keep looking, they do come up from time to time. I have another in good condition but it refuses to display an image.
@@TheBasementChannel Putting it on my saved searches 🙏
After you replace the HD can you still run Classic OS 9.2.2 on that machine?
I don’t see why not 💁♂️
The problem I'm having is I'm getting a crunching/grinding sound from the computer. I assume it's he HD. It wouldn't be the optical drive tho actually making that noise would it?
@@johnmiic yes I sometimes get that noise, but it usually has more to do with the bag of chips I’m eating…
@@TheBasementChannel LOL!
Can you tell me what type of RAM Chips I need to upgrade my model to 1 Gig? Are they still made? Are they still available? I'm in the US/The States.
My Titanium 667 don't have a level 3 cache, why...
It appears you have the older 667 machine without DVI, they added L3 cache with the updated DVI model.
@@TheBasementChannel yes....i have a 667 vga output, only 16mb video ram, but i have upgraded it with dualayer power drive ( from died old MacBookPro Intel) and 7OGB of hard disk fron ( died MacBook white). It has a gigabyte of ram, runs well on OS9 but on Tiger the lack of L3 cache penalizes it. Such a pity. On this machine I installed FinalCutStudio5 and I can edit DV videos in realtime, if I think the old Pentium3 were very slow and you couldn't edit videos so well, I smile and wonder why I didn't jump on Macs before .....
Why don't you use and try an operating system called morphos Amiga like a g4 g5 flies with a morphos system
I’d rather not have to pay for MorphOS when a free OS will work as a file server
@@TheBasementChannel Morphos is free to try it works for 30 minutes then slow down just reboot and get back to working at 100% for another 30 minutes for the Reboot it takes 5 seconds
Wow. Sounds like a massive hassle. No thanks.
@@mirkocipolla9322 I tried MorphOS and it reminds me a lot of AmigaOS; responsive and fast but the problem is that you still do very little to work, navigate. The good thing is that you don't have viruses;) besides many beautiful functions but that Amiga magic ... is gone ....
