And special thanks to Lili the 3 legged cat.
I decided to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first Macintosh by finding the oldest Mac for sale near me. I came across this Mac Plus at a local auction, and after a fierce bidding war I took possession for way too much money. Upon getting it back to The Basement, I soon discovered it was totally dead, bereft of life, an ex-plus. Sounds like a great candidate for Marchintosh!
Much repair mayhem ensues, but the real challenge turned out how to remove the weird coffee looking stains on the case. They almost defeated me.
Along the way we also make the Plus connect wirelessly to my software server effectively spanning 37 years of Macintoshs over the network.
Please note, this video is for entertainment purposes only. Don't try any of this yourself. Especially the dangerous sparky bits.
Thanks for watching. If you would like to support this channel please 'like' and leave a comment. If you are feeling especially generous you can also share the video. But you don't have to, I'm not your mum.

Few things I thought I'd mention:
The 4.5V battery holds the clock, mouse speed, cache and I believe a few other things.
The Plus can read from 1.44MB disks, but only when they're formatted as 800K (double density)
Also, the 128K and 512K can do networking, they just need an adapter for their serial ports!
Awesome restore work!
Good to know! Thanks for adding that info. Is the serial adapter just a dumb adapter or is it some sort of active dongle?
@@TheBasementChannel I think it might be a active adapter but I'm not sure. They usually have a little box that is the adapter itself
Awesome job on the repair, looks amazing.. Now you can use the nifty throwing handle near the back to launch it off a tall building into the abyss.. I always presumed that's the point of those handles at least.
Nicely done, always enjoy a mac repair video.
Thanks mate, another one rescued from landfill.
Nice job!
Awesome job - it looks fantastic! Love these old macs. I really like your wireless AppleTalk setup. Ive got to get something like that going as well.
Yes it came up surprisingly well. I still plan on making a dedicated video about the AppleTalk setup, for the 3 or so people out there who would find it interesting 😆
wow that is an antique
Like me! 😆
Great job on the restauration. Turned out good as new. 🙂
Yes I was surprised it came up so good!
Really nice restoration!
Thanks! I’m really happy with the result, it came up super nice!
Great job!
Thanks! If you want to play a bit of Lode Runner, let me know!

Great video! I've still got my mac plus in need of repair so picked up some good tips. I love your network i'm always impressed when you show it off
Glad to help! What I didn’t show in the video was the whole day it took trying to sort out a version of 6.0.8 with AppleShare already installed 😅 turns out 512k is a difficult amount of RAM to run anything, including installers 😆
@@TheBasementChannel one of the reasons I’ve not started on mine was I wanted to source a compatible os disk. I should just bite the bullet and get a blueSCSI
Yeah for sure. Especially the new V2 model with cd emulation
Lovely video - your production quality is excellent. Well done! Another Mac saved.
5:56 - RARE!!!1! Prototype SIGNED by STEVE JBOS!! $800 firm. No lowball offers. I know what I got
😂every time. Hey thanks for the nice comments, appreciate it!
Nice restoration! I've still got to sort out the flyback on my Plus' analogue board - on yours, it might be worth increasing the v-Size as the image is a little bit letterboxed?
Thanks! Yes I forgot to tweak it before buttoning it all up but I’ve got 4MB of RAM coming soon so will adjust it when I install that.
How would the voltage "earth out" when the chassis isn't connected to ground via the power plug and is lying on an anti-static mat on a wooden table??
Magic I guess 🤷♂️
Really nice restoration! Is this a platinum model? I’ve never seen one so white! Retrobrite?
Looks like the screen geometry is off.
These things are built like tanks really. Other than the Rifas, there’s not a whole lot that needs replacing, at least compared to the later models. At least the bad RAM can be easily replaced.
The capacitor replacement was 100% unnecessary. Not all capacitors go bad, especially ones from the 80s.
It has slightly yellowed which is only noticeable once I removed some of the asset tag stickers, but it’s very slight. The screen geometry does need tweaking but I will do it once the new RAM arrives to avoid opening it up twice. I know all those caps didn’t need replacing, but decided to do it anyway. By the time I pay for freight on the RIFA, I could buy all the rest of the caps and get over the threshold for free freight, so it cost me nothing really, just time. And I installed higher temp rated caps while I was at it, cause it does get quite warm during use. Cheers for the comment!
@@TheBasementChannelgood point about delivery.
You should consider adding a fan.
I have an ibook gemini that needs work to its a touch screen ibook made by a 3rd party company.
Sounds interesting. Make a video about it!
