I want to thank you for your videos. When I was younger and healthy, I loved traveling, but part of the fun was hunting for the best kit and getting it all put together. Now I’m bedridden in constant pain even though I’m just 50 y.o., but watching a kindred spirit preparing for a trip let’s me feel that same thrill vicariously through your videos which you clearly put a lot of work into. Thank you for being who you are.
You have become so natural at this. I felt like I'm watching a TV tour guide host in terms of confidence and experience. Best kits on UA-cam as always!
Some people might think “if you want to travel light, then ditch the packing cubes , the soap, the tools” but as someone who worked in the field and carried a 10L backpack I can assure you that one day youll only have a chance to shower in the rain. And that if the hotel toilet doesnt work, a couple tools will save the day. So aim for a comfortable trip like Jon does
Jon Super Interesting I would swop put the Jeans, for some trekking trousers/cargo pants as a Thai veteran, jeans are super uncomfy, when hot and went Take care on those motorbikes, and roads as Thai roads are super dangerous and have seem many a Ferang (thai word for westerner) come a cropper
Great feedback - I actually travelling in trekking trousers in the end 👍 Yes, the roads were pretty sketchy - no heard that word before! Everyday is a school day!
I'm thankful that the farthest flight I've taken has only been 2 hours, but I will still be taking advantage of these tips the next time I travel by air.
I'll be traveling by plane for the first in 8 years! I watched a fantastic video on security lines and prep. The instructor gave great advice on preparing for the security checkpoint and one detail I found immensely useful; put your pocket dump in the pockets of a travel jacket and then in the bin. This way, your gear isn't floating around the bin waiting for someone's hand to pilfer something. Thanks for these videos Jon, I've been a fan for about 2 years now, and your content is very well-vetted, researched, and presented. I appreciate your approach greatly.
I am impressed. You have assembled a VERY nice, practical, and astonishingly light-weight, compact, warm-weather, travel kit. It's hard to imagine being able to travel internationally anywhere, but especially in Asia, with such a minimal set, but you seem to have gathered everything of necessity. I would only add a cheap, disposable umbrella in situ.
This video is amazing. I recently travelled to Thailand for 3 weeks and I vowed I would NEVER take a case on holiday again. I am travelling to Canada in a couple of months and will be taking your advice on items suggested. I will then not struggle with lots of luggage as I move around. Thank you!
Finally a video on REAL actual carry on luggage . So many posted videos have bags that are actually considered checkin luggage by the MAJORITY of Airlines .
Well, I would suggest for anybody going on a trip for soap is the mini travel size Dr. Bronner‘s soap which is a liquid soap, but you can use it for pretty much anything. A tiny little bit goes a very long way. It’s smaller than a bar of soap and can be used for everything from washing clothes to brushing your teeth even.
Thanks Jon! This video and the get you out of trouble kit for travel have been really useful. I’m traveling to the UK at the end of May and these videos have helped me focus on what’s important and given me ideas for things I wouldn’t have included.
No laptop and charger. No big camera equipment. That will really make your carry-on bag within 7kg from my own experience. Nice to introduce self-laundry in this video using a dry bag to wash the clothing. Nice video, Jon👌.
Nice way of arranging everything, could learn many things. Just four recommendations: 1. You need to carry 1 tourniquet, a Rats is the one you want. Applicable to small limbs. There is even a Rats tail tourniquet (smaller). 2. The emergency kit should be in your slingbag. 3. There are smaller microfiber cloths, for your glasses. 4. You can purchase empty spray bottles (10ml). There you can pour etanol 70 w/w to use as sanitizer, or carry any important liquid you need in a small, secure and affordable way. I'll be checking the toothbrush, I am tired of carrying around mine with the wall charger as well.
I think the only suggestion I would prefer are compressed dry paper towels that expand when wet. I’d put a few in a small Mylar bag (like you taught us). I like the reusable microfiber towel for reusable experiences, but an emergency toilet situation isn’t one of them. 😝 I honestly would cheat a bit by wearing a multi pocket travel jacket. 😁
My friends and family are shocked by my travel light approach. Pays off in the end when they are lugging silly trolley suitcases around unstable ground! Great minds Jon etc etc.
Great video! I always travel with just carry on luggage for work and I have the advantage of flying business for long haul. I tried the minimalist approach for a recent short haul EasyJet trip and plan to do more. Great inspiration here.
Great video, thanks for taking us through your process of why you chose what you did so thoroughly. I'm interested in hearing what responses you get about the Gerber Shard tool in your travel kit. I'd also like your thoughts on the camera you're taking. I was looking at that same type for a couple of trips I'm taking next year, and I'd love your thoughts on how it performed. It would be a bonus if you could mention how you think it would do as a UA-cam camera too. Have a great trip!
My first YT videos used the DJI Pocket 2 as the main camera - now I use it for b-roll when travelling light - I really like it - there are a couple of compromises when trying to manage bright conditions but overall you get a lot in such a small package and the case protects it well and provides quick access - in the next video all the Thailand clips are taken using the DJI - there is talk of a new one coming but hard to know if it's just a rumour.
Great video Jon! Lots of interesting products on your packing list. Was it easy to switch out the Able Carry Max with this SEG28, weight differences aside? After watching your video I'm on the fence which bag I should bring on my next multi-day travels: it's either going to be the Able Carry (from one of your earlier videos) or the SEG28.
Able carry is great and more structured/supportive - tougher I would say too - but SEG is very light and seems to have loads of room - I should try the load out in the Able Carry and see how it fits!
@@JonGadget Thanks, they both seem like great bags. Interested to learn how you find the front pockets on the SEG28, they look smartly done. And that's a good comparison indeed, fitting a similar load out in the max indeed.
I wish more people would follow your advice when flying! I hate having anything to carry on to a flight but obviously it’s unavoidable sometimes, especially long haul. I don’t travel as much as I used to but having done so again recently it was maddening to see some people’s carry on bags and the overhead bin battles!
Have you tried soap sheets and detergent sheets? Soap in the shape of a sheet of paper, hand soap and detergent? Just so you don't have to bring a bar of soap. Have a great trip.
I got tired washing my underwear every night after a long and exhausting day. Now I have switched to disposable briefs made of pure cotton and they cost next to nothing. They are also very lightweight and take minimal space in my luggage. For those who hate adding these to the landfill you may roll them up and bring them home for a proper wash.
What do you think about items from the Scottievest lineup? I have a lightweight travel vest that I can use in emergencies to stuff the pockets with my heavy gear if the airline gate gets picky. I also have a very lightweight drawstring backpack bag which, in a pinch I could put my laptop inside and wear underneath my jacket to remove my laptop weight from my carry on.
I remember, maybe ten years ago, there was a trend of multi pocket jackets designed especially for this use. Some had a "poacher's pocket". That is a large, zipped pocket at the small of the back which would hold a laptop. You might get two kilos of stuff packed this way.
Great video, once more. Flying without waiting for luggage that sometimes even gets lost is definitely an EDC goal. As the summer is starting in our part of the world, protection against the sun is a high priority. Which sun protection products do you use for EDC, and especially while flying like this?
Great gear, as always, I ordered a few of the items. I really like the rechargeable Nitecore lite headlamp you recommended in an earlier video. It's awesome.
I am still so impressed you managed to get your sling bag spot on the weight limit!! It did make me wonder however what you edited from your final version. Did you feel you left something(s) out that you later regretted not having? Like others here, I will be picking up a few the featured items before my next trans Atlantic trip coming up next month. Great video yet again Jon, thanks so much.
I might have missed a battery bank somewhere, and a RovyVon light somewhere (in the Maxpedition bag maybe?). Still, so many good ideas and gadgets to think of!
I have had lots of problems dealing with Irontide. Bought two pairs of their shorts and one of the Pair was faulty. My car keys dropped straight through the pocket on day one due to bad stitching of the pocket seam. Gave them a chance to rectify via email. They said they would send a replacement short in 1-2 weeks back in September and not only am i still waiting but they are no longer replying to any emails. I can understand some supply issues but considering they were also sending me emails promoting the very shorts they said they couldn't get stock of I'm not impressed. These shorts cost way too much for quality issues such as these I will give an update this if anything changes.
I've heard some people travelling far take an intravenous needle first aid pack, think the brand is Adventure Medical. This would be in place of whatever needles the locals might stick in you. Appreciate that might be heavy and overkill for your trip but one to bear in mind if you go further afield.
The biggest issue I see with this bag is that it's a good day bag size, so if it was a normal backpack you could pull your packing cubes out and walk around town with it. But with packing cubes built in you would have to create kind of a mess to do that. So it seems like it would be better as a 35 to 45 L bag not necessarily a 28 L bag
So complete! So good! I only have one request for your female audience to give when possible the equivalent reference. For exemple, I will search for those shorts you can swim with phone in your pocket, they seem great! Anyway, thank you very much, I enjoy watching your vids so much!
Thanks for the feedback - if you follow the link in the description (for the shorts) I believe they do do a female version - I will factor in you comment
Excellent video Jon. Surprised you don't take a USB data blocker to stop possible data theft when charging through a wall USB charger. Cheap as chips and weigh next to nothing.
I bought the compressed towel tablet things based on your recommendation. They’re awesome. I would take a handful of those over your weird waterbottle bidet thing! That’s just nasty 😂 I’d also chuck an AirTag into each of your bags too. Nice vid as always, mate. Happy travels.
Hi! As a previous owner of the original SEG lineup, this is a welcome upgrade. Do you happen to know the internal dimensions of the bucket part? Thank you!

Congrats on the 100,000 subs Jonathan very much deserved. Did you Maxlvledc giving you a shout out on his channel (in the community section)? Enjoy your holiday mate. 😎
Hi Jon, I love your channel and this video. Can you compare this with the Matador Freerain28 Waterproof Packable Backpack? I have a specific problem. I am travelling to New Zealand and Shipping my motorbike out there ahead of me. Most of my luggage will be on the bike but I will need a backpack that can hold enough for 3-4 days while I wait for my bike to clear customs. It will need to be Hand luggage only, versatile enough for doing the tourist thing and pack away nicely once I have collected the bike.
Hello Jon, I need your help. Could you please thell me the name or a link from the usb-cable of the "Philips One Blade"? I cant find it. Thanks a lot in advance Daniel
Great video, what happened to the Able backpack? Anyway great list, also have purchased some of your suggestions. Gosh 28 L seems impossible! My last trip 22 pounds not counting the bag. Very interested in the Graphene clothes! Your video on that was excellent. Cheers Vancouver Island Canada 🇨🇦
Is there anything that you will be looking to pick up as soon as you arrive, even if you don't intend to carry it back again? A small multi-tool for example?
If I was there for a while I would take a utility knife minus the blade and pick up a blade from anything resembling a hardware store - not for this trip though!
Great video and great content, Jon! Thank you for sharing. Say, what’s the brand of the liquids pouch that you display on minute 14:55, that looks big and it seems it can keeps liquids inside the pouch on case of a leak. Can you help me out with this? Greetings from Mexico.
17:23 Also known as eye bra! Solid traveling set up, Matador bags are great. Bought Beast in different configuration myself and I'm very happy with it so far.
Airlines weigh bags not you. Big pockets are your friend. I'm a photographer so I travel with high dollar, high quality, high weight gear, these things seem to go together. Before check-in I load my pockets with batteries and accessories, then transfer everything back to the bag at the gate
Great video. Have you heard of a company called Breakwater supply? They have 100 waterproof backpacks (15L& 25L) and they have innovative and functional features.
well spotted (or heard!) yes, I am not happy with the audio on this one - gain was set too high - changing my set up to include live audio monitoring for the future
@@JonGadget ha ha, sorry, I think I am hyper sensitive to clicks. Notice it in a few TV presented shows regularly too. Definitely a common thing! But having said all that - I LOVE the content you put out. Keep it coming!!
Please tell me about your experience with that toothbrush from philips it''s on my wishlist for a while to buy for emergency sleep over at work pack :D
I'm planning to make an extended tour of Europe next year that'll include camping and going to out-of-the-way places. That means taking along stuff that I can't carry on a plane. I hate the idea of paying large fees for what's likely to be no more than a couple of pounds of gear. I've thought of sending it Poste restante, but I'm not sure how to manage that. Any ideas?

@jongadget curious to know why you did not take your Larq bottle. I would think it would be a great place to test it.
Thanks James. Still love the able carry, it has more structure, just a bit heavy compared at 1.7kg.
Also, for washing clothes do you buy something local? Or have a dry laundry washing preference?
Laundry so cheap there - but I did carry a few flat sheets of hand wash detergent - light and compact and non-liquid - ended up using laundry though
Love your videos, great work, thanks so much.
17:23 Also known as eye bra!
Solid traveling set up, Matador bags are great. Bought Beast in different configuration myself and I'm very happy with it so far.
🤣 Good to know 👍
Airlines weigh bags not you. Big pockets are your friend. I'm a photographer so I travel with high dollar, high quality, high weight gear, these things seem to go together. Before check-in I load my pockets with batteries and accessories, then transfer everything back to the bag at the gate
yes - great plan Richard 👍
Great video. Have you heard of a company called Breakwater supply? They have 100 waterproof backpacks (15L& 25L) and they have innovative and functional features.
what watch are you wearing??
Nice video 👍
Luminox - video with more details on the channel 👍
How do you bring back souvenirs?
Great product review
thanks
Needs some de-clicking on the tongue sounds in audio post-production please :) Great video though and ideal for my next trip!
well spotted (or heard!) yes, I am not happy with the audio on this one - gain was set too high - changing my set up to include live audio monitoring for the future
@@JonGadget ha ha, sorry, I think I am hyper sensitive to clicks. Notice it in a few TV presented shows regularly too. Definitely a common thing! But having said all that - I LOVE the content you put out. Keep it coming!!
Thanks but I’m a little surprised not to see any book. I can’t travel without a book. I mean a paper book.
sorry - used kindle on iPad for that
How heavy does it feel fully packed?
Please tell me about your experience with that toothbrush from philips it''s on my wishlist for a while to buy for emergency sleep over at work pack :D
Really good - battery life supposed to be 3 months - case is nice and protects - vibration quite strong - no complaints
Far lighter and simpler to take a simple folding toothbrush.
You forgot to pack some pants and classy shoes for a night out. For me, Iprefer to use a rolling bag than a backpak.
Congrats Jon on 100m subscribers!!
thank you - much appreciated
I'm planning to make an extended tour of Europe next year that'll include camping and going to out-of-the-way places. That means taking along stuff that I can't carry on a plane. I hate the idea of paying large fees for what's likely to be no more than a couple of pounds of gear. I've thought of sending it Poste restante, but I'm not sure how to manage that. Any ideas?
Take the train.
Awesome thanks 🙏
thank you
