- After seeing so many people recommend Brandon Sanderson, I finally had to give one of his books a try! It was not quite what I expected, but this book stayed with me after I read it. What is your favorite Brandon Sanderson? Which one should I try next?

I’m so glad you ended up liking this one!! I also just smile when I think of this book and Tress in general, love her so much as a character. And I’ve only read Mistborn and am halfway through The Way of Kings but Tress feels very different from those two and probably his other books as well! I really enjoy his writing in general though and think he’s very character driven, which always connects with me. I did not see the twist with Huck coming either and loved it!! 😳❤️
It's definitely a book that has grown even better in my mind after finishing. I always like when that happens. Good to know about the style! I love character driven stories, too.
@@BonnieNicoleWrites I love that, and have felt the same way about it too after reading it! Yeah I mean his fantasy world-building is a major component as well (at least in this ginormous book I’m reading haha) but the characters are really interesting and layered. He has a great mix of plot, world-building, and character work, in my opinion. 😊
As a kid I was into Sanderson's Alcatraz versus the evil librarians books and the rithmatist, but Tress was his first adult book I read. I feel like its narration style was sort of like what I liked about his kids books so I was quite happy about that! But I still haven't read any other Sanderson books...
Ooh I've heard of The Rithmatist but somehow didn't realize that was Brandon Sanderson! That's fun. I love when books can bring back happy childhood memories.
It's such an underrated part but I love how you give a little overview at the beginning on how you structure this video - makes it feel put-together and intentional.
Great review, I've also been seeing this book pop up on book social media and was wondering what the interest is about 🙃
Oh, thank you for the feedback! I'm still new to BookTube so still trying to figure out all the things. I'm glad to know that part is helpful and feeling intentional!
You'll have to let me know if you end up trying it and what you think of it!
Good video Nicole!
This writing style, this book in general is a very different style for sanderson. It gets recommended a lot because you dont need to know about his other works to read it.
Mistborn is fantastic, but was written during an era where grim fantasy was all the rage. Still a good read.
Ooh thanks for the feedback on the writing style. I think I'll try Mistborn this summer.
I was so nervous when I saw this video! 😅 I had hoped you would like it and I am so glad you did!
Tress is written very differently! You mentioned the Narrators voice. He is a character that appears throughout Sanderson's work. However this is the first full book written from his perspective! 😊
So if you want to experience a different style of Sanderson Mistborn The Final Empire is a great next step! That was the series that got me hooked. 🫡
If you liked the narration style of Tress Yumi and the Nightmare Painter is also a story told by the same Narrator, and I think can also be a great choice to read next as well! 😀
I was so nervous I wouldn't like it so I was relieved when I did! That's really cool that the narrator is in other books. I love when authors have recurring characters.
Thanks so much for the recommendations. I think I'll try to read Mistborn for my next Sanderson (maybe this summer?) but I am very curious now too about Yumi and the Nightmare Painter!
This is not Sandersons typical voice. This is Hoid's voice telling the story of Tress to a group of young listeners. Part of writing these "Secret Books" was so Brandon could figure out how to do Hoid's narration for a future book he is planning to write one day. I'm so glad you liked it!
Mistborn would probably be your next logical step if you are ready for a fantastic trilogy. If you want another standalone book, go for "Warbreaker."
Ooh I'm very curious about the book he wants to write in the future in similar narration!
A couple people recommended Warbreaker! I'm pretty sure I want to do Mistborn next, but I'll check out Warbreaker as well. Thanks for the recommendation!
Tress is amazing! It’s not his typical writing style, it’s more that this is a typical narration style for Hoid. He’s in other books as well and ranges from a minor cameo to an important secondary character. He will often tell stories and his dialogue is like his narration in Tress. That where this comes from.
I love that! I'll definitely have to try more from the series to see more of Hoid.
I LOVED TRESS! Honestly anything Sanderson is my favorite. If you want a good stand alone I recommend Warbreaker (though Elantris is stunning as well). If you're ready for a huge commitment, then I recommend Stormlight Archive. My favorite fantasy series of all time!
Thank you so much for the recommendations!! I'll definitely check those out.
So glad to hear somebody recommending Elantris! I think its a fantastic debut publication.
@spade555 yes!!! Elantris is soon good! Sanderson is a genius! I love all his books.
Enjoyed the video! It's always interesting seeing people start Brandon Sanderson for the first time. Tress's writing style is really only similiar to Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, which is also narrated by Hoid. Otherwise, his writing style is fairly different.
I would probably recommend Warbreaker or Mistborn: The Final Empire next.
I'm super curious about Yumi and the Nightmare Painter now! I'll have to look it up. I think Mistborn will be my next Sanderson book.
Its really really cool to hear from a fresh perspective into Brandon Sanderson :) long time reader of his and deep into the paint. The whimsical idea of Tress was a fun change up for Sanderson with this secret project he wrote, it doesn't always have such a purple prose feel to it. I don't know if that is appealing or not, but Mistborn or Yumi and the Nightmare Painter would be next great places to go! Personally I love Warbreaker as his best standalone novel
That's good to know about the whimsy aspect! I definitely want to try Mistborn, as it sounds like it's more of his typical writing style. I'll check out Yumi and the Nightmare Painter and Warbreaker as well. Thanks for the recommendations and thanks for watching!
Totally agree with your take on spoilers, I like the option to hear it! I’ve heard so much good things about Brendon Sanderson books but because they’re typically so long I still haven’t picked one up yet! I’ve heard they’re good to listen to as audiobooks too
Thanks for the feedback on the spoilers!
I think Tress would be a good audiobook! I think the style would lend itself easily to a fun audio experience.
I'm like you - never read his work, but keep seeing recommendations. The genre he writes in is not one I love, but I do want to give this one a try.
It's not my typical genre either, so I was a little nervous to try it. If you do decide to try it, I would be curious to hear your thoughts!
Haha the hypocrisy check! I think a spoiler is only a spoiler in its truest sense, if it spoils something for you and you didn't have a choice if you wanted to hear/see it or not. Talking about the juicy stuff after you've read a book though, with others who have also read the book, or who are not going to read the book (or don't mind spoilers) is a completely different thing! :D As long as it is advertised, go ahead and include it! I don't plan on reading this book so I didn't mind watching. If it's a book I want to read, I can skip it and come back when I've read it :)
Thanks for the feedback! After having time to think more in depth about it (and look at both sides of it as we previously discussed! ha!) I think that's my spoiler philosophy as well.
@@BonnieNicoleWrites Haha yes it occurred to me too that this was an excellent example of things never being black or white, however simple they may seem! 😂
I’ve heard such good things about Tress, and I want to read it. I’ve read The Stormlight Archives and loved them.
I think you would enjoy Tress! I'll look up The Stormlight Archives.
I am still trying to get through Brandon Sanderson’s works. But, I did read this one, and I have read Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. I loved Yumi. It is told in a similar way, because it is one of his secrets projects. You might like that one too.
Yumi and the Nightmare Painter sounds so good! I'll have to try that one. Thanks for the recommendation!
Ive read just about everything Brandon has on the market and he is by far the greatest author I know.
It's interesting that you found the whimsical theme of the book to be, at first, a bit of a put off, but later you found it fit well with the story.
For me, coming into reading tress, I knew that the whimsical features were an experiment on his part, and it goes to show how creatively genius Sanderson is. He took an idea of a more fairy tale like story and played with it and did it marvelously. But to answer your question, no, many of his books are much more serious in nature and are just as powerful in how they are written. I highly encourage you to read through mistborn next.
I really admire authors who can play with styles and still do a remarkably good job! Thanks for the feedback on his writing style. I plan to read Mistborn this summer. I'm excited to try a book that is more of his typical writing style. Thank you for the recommendation and for commenting!
This book was "whimsy" on purpose. It was his take on "The Princess Bride" that he wrote as a gift to his wife during the pandemic and eventually shared it with the world. Other's won't be as whimsical.
If you decide to go full on into the cosmere (the shared universe this book takes place in), then re-read this book AFTER you are fully caught up and you'll see all the easter eggs you missed the first time around.
If you want to keep going then I recommend Mistborn: The Final Empire and just keep reading from there. Eventually also you'll make your way to Elantris which will help to explain even more of this book.
Thanks so much for the reply. I love that he wrote it as a gift. I want to read Mistborn this summer and I'll look up Elantris as well. And eventually I can hopefully make my way through the cosmere, as I am super intrigued by the easter eggs!
This was part of his Secret Projects and it was a writing exercise of sorts for him. Two were for his wife, one was for himself and the last one was for his readers as it has a lot of connections to his other books. The two for his wife are narrated by a well known character in his books called Hoid and he was using that to try and find his voice for a future series he plans to write.
As for the writing, this isn't his usual style and some people aren't a fan of his usual style. They'd rather have more this.
I love that background! I had heard of his Secret Projects and had gathered one was for his wife, but I didn't realize about the others. That's really fun.
I'm definitely curious to see what I think of both styles after I try Mistborn. I think I'll like it!
Wonderful video! This has convinced me to also read this as my first Brandon Sanderson book! I always have to remind myself when I find it hard to get going in a book, that many times when I do push through it ends up be amazing, kind of high risk high reward though 😂
You'll have to let me know what you think of it if you try it! I hope you enjoy. Totally agree about the high risk, high reward. I've actually been trying to practice giving myself permission to DNF a book. But sometimes it's just hard for me to stop a book. I want to be able to record it on my Goodreads goal. 🤣 And in this case, I'm glad I pushed through!
I like listening to reviews of books I've already read. It's a "so what did you think of this book?" kind of thing. Without a spoiler section, reviews tend to be not in depth enough for me to really get an answer to that question.
Ooh that's a good point. Thanks for the feedback about spoilers!
Best wishes with what you choose to read. Currently on page 700 of Count of Monte Cristo. Got a bit to go yet. Happy reading.
Wonderful progress in your book! I haven't made much progress in Les Mis, but I will keep plugging away at it.
The mistborn series from Brandon Sanderson is super good !! I've only read the first book but had a great time overall ! Would love to know your opinion on it if you ever get to read it !! 😄
That's good to know! I'm getting excited to read it. I'm thinking it will be a summer read. Maybe next month!
I love spoilers so I'm bias LOL. Spoiler away, but I think it only works for me because I have a mind of a goldfish and will forget so easily HAHA. Glad you enjoyed the story! For me... I'm definitely not a whimsical reader so I might not dabble into his books (yet?)
Haha! Usually I have a tendency for goldfish brain but for some reason it's things I don't want to hold onto (like spoilers) that my brain just latches onto. 😂 It sounds like from more seasoned Sanderson readers that the whimsy is not his typical writing style. I'm curious now when I try Mistborn what I think of the style difference.
