I love books, I love words, and I love writing! I am a huge mood reader, but I try to read across a variety of genres, from classic literature to psychological thrillers to romance to nonfiction. I love coffee, rain, and reading on rainy days with coffee. Huge fan of the Oxford comma. I like to feel the wide range of emotions that books can evoke. I think it is super freaking cool to be able to read stories that other people have created in their heads and decided to share with us.
I am also a writer and future published author. I have a couple works in progress in various stages of prepping and editing. Follow along for book reviews and writing updates.

So glad I'm not the only one who has written numerous first drafts but never fully edited one 😅 So glad you were able to print out your manuscript too. I hope you're November writing goes well! I really want to get back to my writing. I started up a couple months ago and then got overwhelmed with all the books I was reading 😔
Working on my own 40 before 40 list right now too.
Awesome!!! I look forward to seeing it!!
SAME. I'm so glad you've reached an editing stage!! Congrats! Me previously? What's editing -- just straight publish it (fanfiction) 😂😂 EDITING WHO? WHERE? WHAT? I didn't know anything about NaNoWriMo. I'm going to look up about it after your video. But when you said SMART goals, I had a visible cringe because that was what my old work used a lot 💀It's definitely GOOD but... I'm a little bit traumatized. When you have a final draft, check out Barnes & Noble prints -- make your own hard copy before "officially" printing it too!! But I'm so happy for you. That's such a good amount and great progress 🥰 You having a full plan of action is AWESOME. I love seeing this background progress as a viewer to see what writers go through 😍 I'm a huge fan of aliexpress's color tabs. They're so much cheaper than the ones on Amazon (and genuinely, so much cheaper!) in case you want more for the future. My only opinion is that a lot of writers don't know what kind of books they want to write! A good surprise is how much random genres Ali Hazelwood write. So in general, whatever you decide to do, I know it'll all work out!!
Making an editing plan sounds like most of the hard work of the process. Now the editing will be relatively easy since you made such a good plan!
I totally get what you mean, but the only one who got you back into writing was you. You might have found a helpful tool, but you had the drive and determination and you made the decision to do it and you did it. All you. It’s perfectly fine to feel thankful to the catalyst, but don’t give it to much credit. Not everyone with a hammer can build a house. I’ve seen plenty of people posting videos about replacements for writing community too, I’m sure you can find some! Love your smart goals! And the hickups ordering! 😂 Making it work! I’m so excited for your printed manuscript!!! 😭 That’s such a milestone, you wrote that! And the fear: you don’t have to have all the answers! Giving yourself time to write is just like giving yourself time to solve the printing. Just because it didn’t work out perfectly from the start doesn’t mean you couldn’t solve it and get it done. You just need to make space and time for the hickups to unfold. Same for romance or middle grade. You’re multi faceted, no need to box yourself in before you have explored, or even ever. Plenty of authors write in different genres. Just keep going! You’ll do great! Whatever that looks like for you!
Really enjoyed seeing what you did with this tag, I enjoyed this one as well, a novel & fun concept to generate conversation. Yes, be bold, & take on the classics, it's the only way of keeping great books relevant.
Oh wow, you have me so Dickens curious, I've only read a couple, & enjoyed them, so must get to more. Thanks for the aspirational prod. In Australia, there's a folk singer called Paul Kelly who has made stunning acoustic musical versions of many of Shakespeare's sonnets, reading along to Kelly's performance is an incredible experience - a magical introduction to the sonnets. Suzanna Clarke is a marvel - enjoy. I also love the adventure & delight of 'Watership Down', it's wonderful. I'm about to read my first Stephen King, have been inspired by BookTube to try horror, & I'm enjoying Shirley Jackson, so King is next on my list. 'The Bell Jar' is quite profound. What an exciting list you have set yourself - a great adventure!
I just love Dickens! Which ones have you read? I think my favorites so far are Bleak House and Little Dorrit. Paul Kelly sounds amazing! I'll look him up on UA-cam! Love hearing your perspective on the books from my list that you have read. I'm really looking forward to diving in!
@@BonnieNicoleWrites: 'Great Expectations' is probably my favourite Dickens, I guess. I also love the Peter Carey appropriation of it called 'Jack Maggs', it's marvellous.
Happy birthday!!!!
Thank you so much!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! 😍 🎉🎉 I agree! As we get older, I definitely feel like I'm a lot less stressed about things in life 😂 I really can't wait to hear what you think about all the classics too -- I don't read many classics, but I do want to dabble into it! Maybe if you want, we can buddy read the Book Thief with each other. I'd love to hear more about what you think about it while I'm reading it too 🧡 You never reading an Ali Hazelwood!! I'm so surprised 👀👀 It's not the strongest book for me, but I think it might be for you because of how the book is (because you know how I like my spicier reads 😂😂). I didn't know 13 reasons why is a banned book! I'll have to reread and see, for sure. I'm also planning to read it as well since I read it as a teen. You have such a solid set of choices. It's a great list for sure. I'm so excited to hear everything you think about it!!! This video also is giving me something to think about for my 40 before 40 too! 🥰
Thank you so much!!! Yesss, I'm all about getting rid of stress. 🤣I can only assume that will continue as I get older and I'm here for it! There are so many great classics in my opinion. I've been thinking of making a video on good classics to start with but haven't sat down to actually figure that out yet. I would be interested in buddy reading Book Thief! I'm not too sure yet when I'll be ready for it. When were you thinking about reading it? Ali Hazelwood is an author I keep thinking....oh yeah I need to try one! And somehow it just hasn't happened!! Hopefully I'll enjoy this one! haha I think that 13 Reasons Why has been banned due to the mental health aspect as well as graphic content? But I don't know too much about it honestly other than general subject matter. Did you like it when you read it? That would be so fun if you did a 40 before 40 list too!!!
I’m partial to Hamlet for Shakespeare. I did read The Twelfth Night with my two oldest and they thought it was funny.
Thanks for the recommendations!! I'll let you know what I end up going with. I'm kind of nervous. 😂
Happy birthday!!!! 🥳🥳🥳 What a fun video to make for the occasion ^^ I haven't read Carrie, so can't really share any warnings, but I think it'd be totally fine to DNF books from your list - if it doesn't work for you, you don't have time for it, you already have 39 other books to get to XD For a graphic novel, I've found biographies great for getting into the genre (I read one about Johnny Cash, Marilyn Monroe, Richard Feynman... I want to read the one about Phoolan Devi as well). I guess they're not technically novels, but there is soooo much fantastic nonfiction in graphic format. You could even pair it with your book about Amelia Earhart - I quickly googled it and found a graphic book about her (Who Was a Daring Pioneer of the Skies?)
Thank you so much!! Haha that's true about still having 39 others to get to! We'll see how it goes. Thanks so much for the graphic novel recommendations. I hadn't thought about trying a biography as a graphic novel, but that does sound interesting! I'll check out the Amelia Earhart biography.
Happy birthday! Looking forward to your thoughts on Plath.
Thank you!! I'll definitely be updating on my channel!
I just turned 40! This is such a cool idea! I can’t wait to follow this journey and see your thoughts on all of these books!
Happy belated birthday!! I hope you had a great time celebrating! Thanks! I'm super excited to get into all these books!
Happy birthday! 🥳 I love this goal! I'm thinking about doing the same thing, though I have a few years less to get them all read 😅Les Mis is such a good book, and I really enjoyed Moby Dick, though I feel like I'm in the minority on that one. I need to get to The Count of Monte Cristo too. I've read The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After and really enjoyed both by him, so I'm assuming I'll enjoy Monte Cristo too. A couple graphic novels I would recommend are Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Luen Yang and Squire by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh. Both are standalones, so you wouldn't be starting new series, and Lunar is magical realism while Squire takes place in a fictional world. Good luck with all of your reading!
You should totally do this! It was so fun to make my list and I would love to hear what would be on your list as well. I think that Les Mis will be one of my first books to start in Jan in the new year! I know one other person who also really liked Moby Dick. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised by it! Thanks so much for the graphic novel recommendations. I'll definitely check them out!
Fantastic video, brilliant idea which I plan to shamelessly take inspiration from i.e. steal (although I’m going to have to do 50 before 50) and some amazing choices. At least 3 or 4 of these would be on my list and the ones you’ve chosen that I have read are great choices. Catch 22 is my favourite book of all time. Some suggestions: Read Catcher in the Rye before The Bell Jar, the first section of The Bell Jar really echoes Catcher. Carrie is fairly intense, but if you’re going to do Ronald Dahl, pick Matilda and read it straight after because it’s like a wholesome version of Carrie. For Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and A Midsummers Night Dream are pretty accessible. For a graphic novel Maus by Art Spegelman is pretty great. It is heavy though. It’s the account of his father surviving the Holocaust, and the art style draws the Jews as mice and the Nazi’s as cats. If you want something a little lighter then Death: The High Cost of Living is great. It’s part of the Sandman series but you don’t need any prior knowledge going in, it’s the story of the personification of Death spending the day as a living person. Only problem is that it’s by Neil Gaiman who, due to recent allegations is very problematic. Bravo
Yesss steal away!! I look forward to your list!! That's great to hear about Catch-22. I'm looking forward to it. LOVE all the suggestions!! Thank you so much. I'll definitely keep that in mind (esp the order to read recommendations) as I get closer to those books. You just talked about Maus in a video, didn't you? I know someone did and my mind is apparently blanking on who. 😂 Regardless, it sounded intriguing when I watched it and I wanted to look it up. Thanks for the reminder!
@ Maus wasn’t something you I spoke about recently (don’t want you to have to trawl through my videos needlessly, no one deserves that ) 😁
@@TheBookThing Haha ok! Must have been another BookTuber. Maybe since I've seen it twice recently, it's a sign that I should check it out!
A great list! You have to read things my son needs to know about the world! It’s seriously so sweet and wonderful. I also have count of MC on my list but feel intimidated by the size haha which makes no sense because I read Sanderson and all his books are hefty lol
Ooh I'm even more excited for Things My Son Needs to Know about the World! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Haha I know what you mean though about Monte Cristo! I've read a handful of big books but for some reason this one feels more intimidating! 😂
Great concept and such an ambitious goal! I'm sure it was a blast planning out what books you'd like to get around to reading in the next five years. Happy birthday week!
It was so fun!! I'm really looking forward to checking these books off. I started Frankenstein today! Thanks for the birthday wishes!
This is such a good list! I think Nicky @MyMessyBookshelf read and loved the Pickwick Papers, I think it was that one, it sounded very funny :) I can't wait for you to read The Da Vinci Code! I loved it and would like to read it again, page turner if I ever read one. I never thought of it as controversial, but I guess it would be! A lot of references to religion. Not in a bad way though, as I understood it. But yay! I love so much that you're reading books for 14 year old you. We probably all should. I think 13 reasons why was a series on Netflix. Don't know how accurate it is to the book, but I really enjoyed it. I've also seen the Carrie movie, and I'm so easily scared but that was fine, so I think you're fine! I have never read a graphic novel either! The only one that comes to mind is The Handmaid's Tale, which isn't originally a graphic novel, but I'm assuming the story is the same. I hear Heartstopper is also good. Other than that, I'm not help at all! Also can't wait for you to read Piranesi of course! And finally, THE VERY HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS! BIRTHDAY WEEKS!!! 🥳✨💜 I hope you will love the next five years and all of the amazing books you'll read (and write)! 💐
I'm very curious if my perspective of Pickwick will be different this time around. We'll see! I'm really looking forward to Da Vinci Code! It sounds like such a fun concept. I don't remember all the specifics about the controversy.....something about the book's interpretation of Jesus I think? Yesss! It's so fun to look back and think about books that, for whatever reason, were on my list for a long time or just made me curious when I was younger. Good to know about the 13 Reasons Why show! I do have Netflix so I'll have to give it a watch after I read it. And really appreciate your perspective on Carrie!! Really don't want to start something I'll regret. 😂 Thanks for the recommendations for graphic novels! I'll definitely look those up! Thanks again for suggestion Piranesi! ❤ And thanks again for the birthday wishes and the reading and writing wishes!! ❤
Do we have the same birthday in nov1
We share the same week, but different day! Happy happy birthday to you!! I hope it's wonderful and bookish!
Les Mis is epic, and wordy! Monte Cristo was mostly ghost written! The Pickwick Papers is very historical with how it shows society, but as you say: not all the characters resonate. I have just bought Moby Dick and am currently reading Frankenstein. I certainly recommend Shakespeare! Some very interesting choices!
I am really looking forward to Les Mis! I think that will be my first one to start in Jan to ring in the new year. I had no idea about Monte Cristo! I'll have to read more about that. I am quite curious to see if my perspective of The Pickwick Papers will be different this time around or not. We'll see! I just got my copy of Frankenstein and plan to start it this weekend! Are you enjoying it?
@@BonnieNicoleWrites Yes... just started; now past the letters that open the book. Interesting!
The Pokémon posters in the background are so cute 🥹 I watched the spoilers for party of two and I agree that ending would have let it down, max sounds like he needed some more work 😅
I love his drawings! He's so creative. ❤Yesss! Come on, Max!! 😂
I hope your kid is feeling better! Ahahah, that moment when you're looking for the phone you're filming with... SO relatable! 🤣 That happens to me all the time! Well, technically, the random number generator picked 1 hour first, so *technically*, you did accomplish the challenge ^^'
Thank you! He is doing much better! Hahaha so funny! Sometimes I just forget what's going on. 😂 Ooh that's actually a great perspective!! I crushed the first goal!! 🤣
Really enjoyed this! Four hours is a great goal, especially when you have kids and other life happenings. Someone just hosted a 24-hour reading challenge over the weekend (Fri.-Sun.), and I maybe read 3 hours 😂 So you did better than me!
I keep seeing 24 hour challenges and I'm always like....how do people do that?? haha it's a lot!! 3 hours is great too though! Every bit counts. I saw a channel (Just Martine) who did a spin off the 24 hour challenge. Instead of reading for 24 hours, she did a "how long does it take me to read 24 hours worth of books" video. So she tracked her reading for several days or weeks (can't remember how long it took her) until she reached 24 hours total. I thought that was a fun idea and seems much more doable for someone like me as well!
@@BonnieNicoleWrites Same! Though I'd be terrified to find out how long it actually takes me to read that long 😂
@@Coffee_and_a_Book Same!! 😂
Where’s my phone? 😂 What’s his name? Same! 😅 You did so great with this challenge! And it’s really refreshing to see a realistic challenge with actual life going on at the same time. These challenges tend to get so extreme so I think 4 hours or 8 tops is a much more sane amount to aim for! I appreciate your discussion on love bombing as well, and I think the fact that you’re questioning if it was that is pretty accurate to real life as well. I imagine it’s very hard to tell when it’s actually happening. Interesting to see that in a book like that, although I would have expected it to be discussed more as well!
Hahaha the struggle is real sometimes!! Thanks for your kind words on the challenge! I was originally thinking 8 hours and then was like....actually I don't think there's any way that's doable. And then of course....turns out I definitely wouldn't have been able to make that work this weekend! Even with the 4 hours though it made it fun to sit down and track my reading, so it's definitely a win. Ooh that's a good point about the reality of love bombing making it hard to recognize. He definitely had me questioning a couple times if I was just over-reacting or being too nitpicky. But I guess that second guessing is often inherent with love bombing as well. I do appreciate that there was at least some discussion within the book. But.....there were just other issues that weren't really addressed and I feel like he got over his problems way too fast at the end to be believable.
@@BonnieNicoleWrites Exactly! I think that's what's fun about challenges, you have one goal in mind but you never know what else it will bring, like insights or realizations. It's fun to just try, and it's fun to watch either way! Yes, that's probably very accurate too! The "Is it me?" Absolutely, it has to start somewhere. I don't know how common that type of thing is, but I feel like it would be interesting to read about and a good way to see an example of how it can happen. If it's handled well of course. And yeah, simple fixes are probably not part of it!
I LOVE this reading challenge. Also, no tripod needed because it looks so chill 🤩 4 hours is such a solid amount -- I love that you skipped over the 1 hour 😂 The kid's pokemon ball drawings are amazing in the background too. Hope your youngest feel better! 🧡 Honestly, I love that you jump around the books but it goes to show that you're busy with a lot of things happening in your life 🥰 "What's the dude name?" - actually me when I do my book reviews. LOL, I have to really make a note in my scripts so I don't just end up saying FL/ML and then tangling my tongue all over the place. Audiobooks are really a game changer for me, especially now I feel like I can get SO much reading done while doing my chores because chores take so much time 😂 You were definitely super close to the amount!! I can't wait to see how you do in the future challenges too because it's just life! I think the challenge also keeps the idea in the forefront of your mind -- so when you have down time you'll remember to read it.
Oh good! I'm glad the video wasn't too jerky or distracting! Haha I saw the 1 hour and I was just like....yeah no. 🤣 Thanks! My youngest drew the Pokemon. He loves drawing and I've been pretty impressed with his pictures! He is feeling much better now, too! I'm so glad it's not just me forgetting the names. 😂 I always feel like...I promise I did actually read this book! 😂I love audiobooks. I used to listen to them all the time, although lately I've slowed down a bit. I'm trying to get back into them, though, because it's so nice when cleaning or running errands or whatnot.
Your mention of plagiarism for prompt two makes me think of how I'd react if I found out, after purchasing, that a book was written by AI. That would probably color my experience quite substantially. That seems like a web of controversy we're bound to get trapped within often in the coming years. Your kind words at the end are so gratifying-Thank you! 🙏
That is such a good point! I have been thinking about AI a lot, especially as it relates to books and writing. My favorite writing event, National Novel Writing Month, recently released a statement that, in short, condones the use of generative AI for members writing their books. It's very disheartening and makes me nervous for the future of books and the publishing industry.
@@BonnieNicoleWrites That is hugely disheartening. Feels to me like we're narrowing our sense of literature into something rote and predictable, purely familiar, wherein it has become a teasing out and satisfying of expectations rather than a challenge and impetus for growth. AI could probably do the former already, stacking simple satisfactions line by line. But then where do we discover ourselves-ourselves in tension with something new-, or where do we discover another, that other that reminds us our world is one among many? Of course, I don't mean to shake my fist at clouds (frustrated at the fact of their perpetual changing). There will probably always be creatives, artists, those who challenge and push and cultivate. Even if the market shifts toward lowest-common-denominator distractions-the easiest sell-there will always be those who notice and care for something more. Kind of like how our corner of BookTube is a corner of personal thoughtfulness, a tad more quiet and long-winded than the million-sub behemoths, and there are those who seek that and we are okay (but then AI is coming for UA-cam, too, isn't it?... hmm...).
Great video and thank you so much for the tag!!
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy the tag as well if you end up doing it!
I'm glad you did this tag - it was really nice to hear your views and I related to a lot :)
I enjoyed doing this one!!
I think I may tag myself in this one! 🤣 Great video!!
Yesss do it!!! I would love to hear your answers!
Yesss! I'm so GLAD you did this tag anyways because I'm here for all the honest moments 😂Because I definitely was planning to do this tag too (without a tag) HAHA. I love your mentality of trying to find the best positivity in the book because I'm sure we can definitely get something from most books! I agree with how you feel about classics/banned books too. It's intimidating, and I don't want to say something that might be incorrect or show that I'm ignorant 😅 But I think with my most recent read with Diary of a Young Girl, I think I owned up to it pretty well and learning about these things is part of the reason why we read 🧡 LOL, I do think the question about whether or not intention of reading should be rephrased because we all want to read books we buy. It's whether or not it's a high priority or we have time for it is another thing 🤣 I also really love your answer for about the views as well 💕Really, I love how random the youtube algorithm is... I genuinely think it's the first hour that propels it 🫠 So if it gets picked up more than average within the first hour... it'll get push out more afterwards. Thank you so much for the kind comments my channel & the editings 🥹 Honestly, I really love your editing because it's so calm. I do a lot of jump cuts in mine, so it might be what you're thinking of. If I want a part to have emphasis.... I just "zoom" in my face without actually 😂And any effects are generally already premade from the software I use (it's free!) Davinci Resolve 🥰 I will warn this application does need a decently fast computer because it eats up memory and want to have a good graphics card!
YES do the tag!! I would be super curious to hear your thoughts. I love that there are (almost) always positives to get from any book, even if it may not be something I overall agree with or like. I'm glad you understand too about the classics/banned books. It's "funny" how we can get in our own heads about stuff like that sometimes. Hahaha yes sometimes books just go down the priority list. So sad for that book! 🤣 You know that would definitely make sense if the first hour of a video really is the most important. I'll have to think about that more! Thanks so much for the editing tips and info!! I've been using Adobe Premiere Elements 2018 for editing and I've had trouble even figuring out things like zoom and whatnot. Or rather I got so frustrated trying to figure it out I gave up. 😂 I'll check out Davinci Resolve!
I love this tag, and thank you for tagging me! I actually have my honest booktuber video coming out tomorrow because I was tagged a couple other times to do it, so unfortunately you won't be shouted out in the video but I will be sure to mention you in the description. And I agree, I always want to post videos that are authentic to me, not just because I know the topic will make people click on the video.
So fun you already had it coming out! Great minds think alike for this week. 🤣I loved hearing your answers.
I'm so glad you did this tag! 😄 And I have to say I love both the editing and the audio! Thank you for your kind words, that means a lot, and I would love to get a coffee and chat about books. I get that vibe from you too! And we could keep an eye on Dickens in the meantime 😂 I think you're spot on with the views and the authenticity! As long as we're true to ourselves, it's just packaging things in a way that we hope will make someone else enjoy it. I don't think it's really any different than dressing nice or being nice to people. Not fake nice, but just nice because that's who we want to be. I know for me, watching other people's videos can be such a comfort and company and distracion and so if I can do that for someone else, why wouldn't I want to do that for as many people as possible. As long as I'm true to me. Ok, I'll stop, this question just gets me going haha! 😄 It's the same with honest opinions about books as well, even if they are classics. They are not going to be for everyone, and so even if some people have a problem with you not enjoying it as much as they did (which is weird...) there will also be people who didn't enjoy it either and find relief in you voicing that opinion. I love your top btw, the colors and pattern suit you really well!
Thank you! ❤ I'm glad the editing hasn't been distracting or too boring! Coffee and books and Dickens sound like a perfect afternoon together!! That's a great point likening it to dressing nice and being nice! I feel the same way. I watch UA-cam for several reasons, but often for company or distraction or just plain for fun. And I hope that my channel can be that for others too! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I love that it gets you going! 😂 That's so true about classics. Even if my thoughts aren't the same or as deep as other people's thoughts, that's ok. We can all bring different thoughts and perspectives to the table! Thank you so much!! I appreciate that!
What a fun tag!
Thanks! I enjoyed this one.
So cool, great answers and thanks a million for the tag, it might be a little while before I get to it (I’m way behind in my tags) but I’m really going to enjoy this one. Oh and never feel self conscious about classics, they’re just books and you’ll either enjoy them or not. 😁
No worries! I look forward to your answers whenever you get to it. Thanks for your encouragement about the classics! Hopefully I can get to them some more in the new year!
Awwww why are quizzes so fun 😂 I can’t believe you’ve never seen the hunger games!
Right?? haha I love a fun quiz!! I should really remedy that, shouldn't I? I don't know that I'm interested in the book, but maybe I'll try the movie!
New book to me but it sounds really interesting and I really like your book club concept too, great for a community feel. Liked and subbed. Ollie *hug*
It was a very interesting read! I'm glad I read it, although the content was rather heavy in parts. Ellen's book club is so fun! You're welcome to join too! And you don't have to do a full video to participate, either. Thanks for checking out my channel!
I have never heard of this book before, but it sounds really interesting. Loved hearing your thoughts on it too!
I hadn't heard of it before Ellen's video either! It was definitely an interesting read, although heavy content!
13:07 YES🎉 i am totally team finish that draft!!! Ive been loving a good question session. I feel like questions are such a great tool to keep chugging along
I'll be honest, I have barely done any more since this video. :/ I keep feeling rather discouraged, because the first draft was supposed to be my summer project. And now....it's decidedly past summer. But I'm still working on it! Yesterday I only wrote one sentence, but at least I got one sentence! Question sessions are so helpful! I love how one question can just lead to another which can lead to unlocking a new idea or element!
OKAY I LOVE THIS IDEA 03:07 idk what it is about this moment and you using a thesaurus to get inspired but I am so into this and trying to find a good book to refer to if I'm feeling uninspired! You are AMAZING for sending your work out to a contest and receiving feedback! That is such a huge step! Congratulations!
Ooh I'm glad you liked the thesaurus idea!! There's just something about certain words that just brings me joy and inspiration!! Thank you so much!! That is so kind and encouraging!
I was so happy that you decided you're doing the whole book review because when Ellen said she wasn't going to finish it... I was definitely curious as to why 👀 Your synopsis definitely gave a lot more information than what I read on Goodreads. This definitely sounds like a really thought provoking book through emotion and character interactions. Especially wanting to read how the book is open ended... I agree with what you said about the Pastor. I do have to say I'm interested in reading it now but it does seem like it is going to require a good headspace to get through! 🧡
Yes, I would recommend making sure you're in a good head space before reading! There are so many perspectives and things to think about and I have continued to think about it quite a bit since finishing. I'm glad I read it! But definitely heavy content!
When I read The Mystery of the Blue Train 15 or so years ago, it was my favorite Agatha Christie at the time. I want to reread to see if I still like it.
I think maybe the beginning was just too slow for me, because I did like the actual mystery part later. Curious your thoughts if you do re-read it!
this book sounds so interesting, I’m adding it to my TBR 🙏🏻☺️
I hope you find it as interesting and thought-provoking as I did!
Such a great review! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Thanks for watching! It was worth the read for me, although definitely a heavier read.
Great review, thank you for answering some of my questions. You definitely liked this book more than I did! All the ingredients were there; based on a historical event, atmospheric time and place and a sense of foreboding but it just lacked something, for me. It was incredibly slow but descended into quite a disturbing end. This book was very well written. My favourite character was Ursa and I loved the relationship she had with her sister. I don't think I would seek out another book by this author.
It was definitely slow. I wasn't sure if I would end up liking it at first. It did pick up for me though as far as being a very thought-provoking and insightful read. Disturbing is a good adjective for the ending. It was remarkably sad. I loved Ursa as well! I really liked how the author showed her story and transformation of thought and beliefs. Thanks for posting some questions for it and for watching and commenting!
Awwww the book club sounds like such a lovely idea!
You're welcome to join too if you want! 😊 It's all on youtube and very open to read and discuss whenever!
It's such a fun book club! Ellen picks a few options every month and people can read one or all. So far I have just read one a month. And you don't have to make a whole video....only if you want to!
I LOVE this so much! Thank you for doing this video! I really loved hearing your thoughts and answers to the questions. From what I can tell, this book was pretty much everything I had hoped for it to be, except I wasn't prepared for the witch hunt part. But the relationships between women, and the small mercies, and the believed mercies of the pastor/commissioner man, I think you're spot on with that. I could imagine it's both, and that contrast is very powerful to me. The self-righteousness vs the actual kindness and emotional value. I also think that Dina was Sámi, I didn't get very far as you know, but I think she was. So that's the indigenous people of Scandinavia, which adds yet another layer to the story, as they have been mistreated through history, like most other indigenous peoples. And their connection to nature and spirituality being seen as witch craft and something dangerous. (Which is so stupid, because if you don't believe in it, why are you so afraid of it?) I wish I could have finished the book as well, but hearing your discussion of it almost makes it feel like I did! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and that you got so much out of it!
I totally get not being prepared for some of the elements in the book. Some of it took me by surprise! I also thought the contrasting of the types of "mercies" was very powerful and quite interesting (ha! In editing, I've realized how often I use that word to describe things) to me. Diina was Sami! I actually watched another video review after I posted mine and I really was not aware at all about all of that history. I'm so glad to have learned that and I appreciate you pointing that out. I want to read more about it as well to be better educated. I definitely agree....why so much fear if you don't even believe it?? I'm glad that you enjoyed the review. Hopefully it wasn't too spoiler-y and still too heavy. I appreciate your comment!
@@BonnieNicoleWrites I always wondered what the title meant so it was great to hear your take on it! I know very little about Sami history as well, I learned a little reading Stolen by Ann Helen Laestadius earlier this year, otherwise I might not have paid much attention to it. That doesn’t mention witch hunts specifically, but more the discrimination and mistreatment in modern day. I think the Swedish church apologized at some point, which was better than not apologizing but not really enough. Your review was wasn’t too spoilery at all! I really enjoyed it.
Mmm I was thinking of maybe picking up the audiobook for it this month for Ellen's book club, but given the trigger warnings, I'm not so sure anymore... Glad I watched your video beforehand!
I had a couple people recommend I look up trigger warnings before I read it, and I'm glad I did. It was definitely one I wanted to prepare for mentally. Well worth the read, but also would definitely recommend making sure it's a good day/week/season for an individual to read it!
Happy birthday month!
Thank you!!! 🥳
YAY! Happy Birthday Month -- LIBRAS UNITEEEE BECAUSE ME TOO 🎉🎉 I'm loving the graphics and all the data. OBSESSED 😍 I didn't know Beartown has a 2nd book! I know that Ellen has it as a pick for October as well so I was thinking of choosing it for October TBR. BUT the way you said that you want to do what you want for October since it's your birthday month?? that's me too 😂 I'm not doing any requirement for this coming month as well. I'm not a fall specific person so no specific books coming up. Just all vibes as well
YAY that's so cool it's your birthday month too!!! Celebrate!!! My birthday is closer to the end of the month, so I'm actually a Scorpio....although I don't like admitting to that because almost every description of Scorpios that I have read don't sound super positive and a lot of them don't sound like me at all. 😂 Oh well! There's actually 3 books in the Beartown series! I didn't realize that at first either. I'm pretty sure it's the only Backman book that is a series. Yesss just embrace the vibes for birthday month reading!! haha read what you want!
Yay for your birthday month!! It's so funny how sometimes books we DNF actually end up being pretty good - I've definitely been there before. Excited to see what October brings for you!
It's so hard to know sometimes! I'm all about life being too short to read books you're not enjoying and I do DNF sometimes. But also.... sometimes you never know until the end! I've read books that I haven't enjoyed and then at the end it took I turn I liked! And I've read books I've been loving and then at the end it took a turn that made me dislike the whole thing. It makes it hard to know when to DNF sometimes!
