Good to see your review on these 2 knives. I have been carrying the Boker for a couple years with no failures, great knife for the money. Just bought one with sv30 steel for $60. Love your channel keep it up.
The Schrade is aluminium. I tested mine, and it seems to be just a little bit softer than the aluminium used on Cold Steel's Code 4, but it sure is aluminium. After a few months of use I have yet to experience the problem with lock up. You might just have been unlucky, but then again, I might just have been lucky with mine. Will test it again when I get back home to make sure :) Other than that, totally agree :)
I just got my Boker Kalashnikov 74 auto in the mail today and I am absolutely blown away by how well this knife functions..I pops out with authority,if you didn’t have a little bit of a grip on it,the knife would jump out of your hand..I just seen BladeHQ got some other Boker autos in that are made in D2..I believe it was the Boker “Strike” and they are just a couple bucks more than the Kalashnikov 74 auto at $50 a pop..I will be ordering one of them later this week
There’s a small scratch on the back of the schrade that clearly shows that it’s alluminum. Glass reinforced nylon doesn’t shiny and metallic under paint. Lol
I like the boker I have bought that knife over and over. It’s a good work knife for what I do. Only issue is I have had a blade break when I dropped it, Nd the spring has now broken in 2 knives. But that’s over a few years of constant use
I like how you point out that your opinions are your opinions in a world where everyone thinks they’ve gotta be right, great reviews man, I’m bout to go watch one on the launch now 👌🏻
Just got the new Kalashnikov with harpoon blade, my first Kalashnikov. Yes, it's aus 8 but for $43, I have no problem with that. What blew me away is how hard it fires out! Dare I say better than my Protech tr-4. Going directly into my pocket as my edc. Came hair shaving sharp as well. And the coolest box too!
I have 2 Benchmade Auto’s... one of which I carried for 2 years. I now have a Boker 74 and have carried it for I think 4 years and love it. The button on mine sticks up further than the one on your knife. At least I think it does. You can actually feel mine above the handle... I do have to tighten it every once in a while though...
Bought the Boker yesterday and then this vid popped up on my feed. I watched on pins and needles waiting to see if I made the right choice. Thanks! Great video.
Aaron Thanks My best friend just sent me a Dagger blade D2 Blackwash Kalashnikov today for Christmas And so far I love it It’s my first automatic since the Buck Quickfire which really sucks I appreciate the testing God bless
I'm Canadian as well...the problem with our laws it that it leaves a ton of it up to the RCMP/metro police... the can and do take away blades whether they are legal or not...and their is zero you can really do about it... because the laws are fairly vague and leave it up to the police to decide...
you can even be charged...as you need to have a good reason to be carrying any blade in public....and saying it's for self defense doesn't have legal grounds here...as it's illegal to defend yourself with a weapon here.... You can be charged for carrying a wrench here if they deem it...
Randy Yeager Just don't act stupid with your blade and they won't care. Take it out, use it, put it back and you should have no problem. It also helps for them to not be finding it once they're already searching you because of another crime/suspicious behaviour.
The Boker Kalashnikov is hands down the best budget auto .Even in S30V or XHP it can be found in the sub $70 price range. Replacement springs are cheap and readily available. I recently purchased a mini Kalashnikov in XHP for edc and I love it. This is one high value/low price auto.
I like it enough to get a full size XHP Kalashnikov, too. The mini gets a touch up on a ceramic hone occasionally but it has an impressive edge holding quality regardless. This seems to be the type of material you'd be better off keeping up with the edge rather than letting it get dull. Recently I purchased the Cold Steel Code 4, Recon 1, American Lawman, and the Talwar in CTS-XHP.
Own 3 Boker auto kalashnikov auto knives and have no issues. Had them for over a year as my daily carries and love them. You get a lot of knife for the price. Obviously not a benchmade or a microtech, but trust them. I wear a schrade karambit neck knife, but that was the only knife design that appealed to me.
Good video, very informative. I had a bit of side-to-side blade wobble on one of my Bokers, and was able to tighten the pivot screw ever so slightly. Now there is no play.
Im in Oregon which is great because not only do we have Benchmade, Kershaw, CRKT, Gerber, and Leatherman but we also have very relaxed knife laws. Its legal here to carry a ballistic knife
Thanks for the nice review. I live in Illinois which usually sucks in regard to any LAWS regarding guns or knifes. However the Governor just passed a law that says if you have an illinois gun card you can carry and own automatic knifes. We just got a new governor in the last midterm election, hoping he don’t change the laws around. We were the last state to offer CCW. I know other states are worse than illinois but here they have made it very expensive to get your CCW.
I feel for you. Illinois only got CCW because SCOTUS more-or-less said they had to (Mcdonald vs. Chicago), so the legislators in Obamaland drag their heels whenever they think they can get away with it. In Michigan, the laws have been slowly relaxed, but the potheads who got lured out from under their rocks by a recreational weed initiative on the last ballot voted in Wretched Twitmer as our state's governor, and SHE wants to implement New York style gun control despite the fact that we've been doing reasonably well without it. Bet she'd re-instate the ban on automatic knives, too, if she thought she could get away with it... >:(
It's just the coating on the aluminum man. Great video I just ordered on of bikers limited edition kalashnikovs it's the blue and black all their new colors are great
Really enjoyed the video. I have been wanting an automatic for a long time now but they are usually too expensive for the good ones. This comparison video was very informative. I was going to get the Schrade even after the review because I really liked the way it looked but, after going to the Blade HQ website I found a Boker in all black with a blade that I really liked so I went with it instead. I have a couple Boker knives already that are manual openers and I carried them each for years without any complaints. The brand impressed me. Thanks again for the review. Very helpful.
@@bartholomewnelson1801 I got rid of them when Colorado law enforcement discovered I owned them and confiscated them before charging me with an Illegal weapons charge for each one. 122 in total. I got lucky had the arresting officer not completely screwed up getting the case dismissed I would've faced 60+ years.
Yea I have a couple of Boker knifes and they are all great for the price you can’t go wrong I have $30 $50 and $100 Bokers and love them all the same great knifes 🔪
In today's market, the Boker Strike auto is under $40 and is an excellent edc auto. I carried one until I made the switch to a double action OTF auto Microtech Ultratech. But the Boker Strike auto is an excellent budget auto.
Beautiful review I would not have a problem with any of the blades , the rubber cut is sumwhat an extrem test , but the price is right , just for the simple fact I personally would not put my high dollar blades through extream use , That's why we have cheaper blades , beautiful review
only issues i had with my boker was initial sharpness wasnt too hot and i had to decommission the spring for state laws but in a few weeks im ordering a new coil spring
If you scratch the handle and the material in the scratch is silver colored, it is metal and likely Al. If the material in the scratch is the same color as the surface of it is injection molded. some sort of nylon or plastic.
My Boker has zero blade play I think the Kalashnikov is a great knife I have a friend who's carried they same Boker ak74 for 10 + years I just got one from my son for my birthday
Not excusing the design of the plunge lock on the Shrade but all autos have blade play due to the design of the mechanisms. BladehQ actually covered this in one of their videos. My state, Illinois, just allowed autos and I got a +$230 Benchmade (Adamas) with blade play. Even Microtechs supposedly have blade play. According to the BladeHQ video only one auto (@ I blue e the price point of $1500) has no play and they consider it the future of autos.
Hold the Schrade still for a second and you’d see the nick in the handle above the lock showing it’s aluminum and not polymer. It’s more than likely some mim process that gives it the odd feel
Just bought a black on black boker with a carbon fiber kydex sheath. Ive always gone spyderco but wanted to mx thing up ever since i lost my Paramilitary 2 :( I also picked up a boker balisong trainer.
Yeah back when Schrade was actually Schrade and made in the United States. Quality steel's especially their carbon. Great designs and Superbly constructed. I've got old schrade's that give case xx and buck a run for their money.
I love where I live since I literally could carry around any sort of sharp weapon and not get stopped any knife is legal here! Also I have a gerber 06 auto military edition auto knife! It's awesome! I got it from a military girl who just wanted to let it go as she got a new issue knife I only payed $20! Yeah $20 for a gerber auto with nice steel!
@@ksdad2two I believe you can carry any knife with a blade 3.5" or less. To carry anything larger you need to have a proof you are using it for a use like hunting." That is as I understand it at least. You can do a quick search and find the actual laws.
The plunge button coming out further on the Schrade is another safety mechanism. It maintains that the tang engagement never slips all the way. It's a built in feature! I love my SC90BS with 6061 T6 aluminium handles, especially since I got it for $13 on sale!
Too bad; I much prefer the blade shape of the Schrade. It's been over a year since you published this program, has there been any action by Schrade to fix/improve the locking mechanism?
Great review as usual! I have the same clip point Kalashnikov, just in the all blacked out version. Great knife. Although I don't think it actually has a reversible pocket clip. If you look closely where it sits at the butt of the handle, there are little cutouts that allow it to fit snugly in place. The other side does not have these. Juuuust for future reference. Haha Peace man!
I love my bokers also. Have bought 3. Two got stolen. Third one doesnt leave my sight now. They have all been razor sharp and havent ever had a problem.
@Dill Rogerz I've lost a Kershaw Launch, Manix 2 Lightweight S110V, Kershaw Skyline, Leatherman wingman, a lightning OTF, and I'm sure a few more I can't think of. Idk where a single one of them went except the lightning OTF. I distinctly remember leaving it on top of a refrigerator back when I cleaned restauraunts.
I really enjoyed your video and review. I have already purchased a Junglas and Esee 6 based at least partially on your reviews of those knives. I believe that the Stone Wash is the better finish. At least that is the one I prefer. I have some hesitation when using My Esee knives in food prep because of the original finish. So the Stone wash would be my preferred finish and thank you for another great video and review. ronintucson
I find it hard to believe that there's a dagger sharpened on Both sides Also I can a D2 version same price should I pull the trigger on that or not big of a Deal Ehaothe coating on the Boker
Thanks for testing these two head-to-head! Living in MI, I'm looking forward to next month when I can start carrying an auto. The Schrade had been high on my list -- thought it was ambidextrous (I'm a lefty) and Boker was right-hand only. Glad you clarified that. I do like the look of the Schrade, but apparently it's another example of the "oh-so-close" attempt typical of that company. Looks like I'll be picking up a Boker.
You have issues with that Boker button? Dude my hands are huge and that button is phenomenal. PS all autos have minor side to side play. Lest the action be slow due to friction.
i just ordered this shrade from blade hq a couple weeks ago.. i love it. only difference is my lock is in the same location but on the spine, not the handle scale..... anyone else have one with the lock on the spine?
THIS level of honest, practical assessment (not ridiculous destruction tests!) is why GT is my go to gear channel!
For nearly 4 years now the Boker Kalashnikov is my most carried knife. As good today as the day I got it, and just the right size/weight for me.
There’s a reason the Boker K is becoming a budget classic

according to Boker's website the scales are Aluminum, www.bokerusa.com/pocketknives/kalashnikov/kals-74-01kals74n. You may have got a clone?

i just ordered this shrade from blade hq a couple weeks ago.. i love it. only difference is my lock is in the same location but on the spine, not the handle scale..... anyone else have one with the lock on the spine?
I've heard the Kalashnikov wobble is anomalous. It is supposedly fixed by tightening the screw and blue loctite.
Solid review.
Thanks.
