  • Today I had some time to get creative with my Love Letters Digital Mug Rug Kit. I printed on 100% cotton with my laser printer and used Derwent Inktense pencils to color in and dye the fabric. Let me know if you have questions, I'd love to help!
    These are the products I've used in today's video as I am an Amazon affiliate :)

    Lisa! I sent you a little note not long ago on Facebook, stating how I stumbled upon your
    channel by accident. I was not looking to be a quilter, but ... instantly became a fan of yours.
    I was specifically looking for a good product, paint or ink for fabric. My gift is drawing and I
    wanted to find a product that would allow me to utilize drawing and painting on fabric. Being
    a new fan, I do watch and learn from you. I stumbled upon this video and Lisa, this is exactly
    the product I had been looking for in the first place, I just didn't know what it was. There are
    no accidents when God is working and connecting and I am certain you were not a stumble
    find either. Thank you so much for all that you share and how you share. You truly are an
    amazing instructor. Love Love Love!

      I love your refreshing point of view! My professional background before becoming a "professional quilter" is that I was a restoration artist for a company in Williamsburg VA, and have been painting since I was 15. I love every aspect of painting and with different mediums :) The Intense is by far one of my most favorite methods!! I do highly recommend them, and as with any other medium, they do have their fair learning curve to go along with, however, every bit of working time with this product has been a joy. I appreciate the awesome feedback and am thankful that you are following along with my videos!

      There is a product called STOP FLOW by Sennelier - it prevents DYE from spreading, and I would imagine it would also work with this product as well. I have DERWENT inktense products - so I will try this method on an idea I'm working on.

    I made some amazing fabrics with Inktense pencils and blocks and was crushed when almost all the color washed out! After watching your video I'm asking myself if I heat set the color. I don't remember any directions about doing that. Now I'm going to try again. Thanks!
    Here's a little tip of mine: I use cheap hair gel instead of aloe vera gel (it's much cheaper and the bottle is huge!) Another way to apply it is to pour it on the fabric and drag it over the surface with a plastic card. This quickly fills all the fibers and preps the surface for the color. You can still blend with a brush or other tool as you go along. Fine lines will hold their definition. This also works great with thin fabric paints and stenciling.
    Thanks for your cool ideas!

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  6 років тому +1

      The Inktense products come with very vague instructions. I think they are primarily made for paper. However, due to the nature of the ink, many people use them on fabric as well. I surely would heat set the image you create after it is dry. MOST of the time I use Inktense on my art quilts and projects that don't usually go through the wash, however the items that have been washed handled fine. Try heat setting and see if that works for you :) Great idea about the hair gel! Hmm.....I'm almost wondering if maybe that was a reason the color didn't set in???? I don't know that the hair gel would make a difference vs. aloe.....maybe something to experiment with :)

      Also my shirt, after washing, a lot of paint was gone. It was a test. On my trouser (work) it stayed. My shirt was a cotton t shirt my trouser polyester. And I have ironed the both.

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 років тому +1

      that is so interesting! I'm guessing that the shirt had been prewashed before applying the color? I haven't ever tried it on clothing items. I'm glad you were doing a test. It would be worth experimenting and finding a way to make it "stay". Thanks for sharing your results!!

    • @Dita66
      @Dita66 5 років тому +2

      Lisa Capen Quilts, Yes it is my painting shirt. So i have washed it many times. I have ordered now golden gac 900. I saw an test on UA-cam and the colors stayed with this after washing (in the machine ) and ironed it for 4-5 minutes. So I going to try that. I am a teacher, so when I say something to people it must be the right thing.

    Hello lovely Lisa I just love this darling little rug. I live about 2 hours from Keswick in Cumbria where the original little Derwent factory was. It is now their museum, they started making pencils around 1880 I believe, it is Beatrice Potter country. I bought a lovely big box of these pencils when I visited there last so am going to try a new rug today as it is too snowy to go out today. I hope you don’t mind me saying but I hope your arm heals quickly it looks sore so take care of it - many years ago I was a nurse/midwife. You have wonderful day and thank you for your fabulous tutorials they are so clear and precise. I think you would make a fabulous radio announcer as your voice is so nice to listen to. Big hugs and loves from a very snowy U.K. xxxxxxxxxx🙋🏻😘❤️

      Lisa Capen Quilts will post as I do them! I coffee stained a piece of muslin that I am going to stitch leaves and a stem on- which I will then paint with a watercolor effect with Neocolor 2. Will then make a yoyo flower to attach to stem and finish it off with a small word ( maybe BLOOM) that I will cut out of coffee stained cardstock. I got this basic idea from stitchesbyjulia. I am also exploring using drop cloths for projects. So many ideas so little time!!

      knittingismylife I have a Singer Patchwork sewing machine.....and it is a work horse of a machine!!! Not one problem in three years, and I piece together some heavy duty quilts! The only thing I wish it had was a hovering option, like when doing applique and stop stitching, the foot lifts slightly allowing you to move your work without manually lifting the presser foot.....AND in my opinion the throat space is a tad bit small. But I can't complain, this machine has been faithful!!

    At least on paper, these are definitely not light fast (it's one of the big drawbacks of this medium to many artists since their works using these won't stand the test of time). Also, I wonder if thinning down the aloe vera gel with a mix of water and fabric medium (instead of plain water) wouldn't help with setting the color into the fabric.

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  6 років тому

      That's interesting about being light fast......I did an art quilt about 2 years ago and the colors are still as vibrant today...I wonder if it's because with the fabric you heat set it with the iron? Interesting.....

    • @robinalcorn5140
      @robinalcorn5140 6 років тому +2

      Different colors have different lightfast ratings. Looking at the list, the ones in the sets are the more lightfast colors. Not a bad idea to check the website before choosing colors for work that will be displayed long term or sold.
