Hi Julia! I am by no stretch of the word a seamstress, but I am a mixed media and watercolor artist and use muslin and other cotton fabrics in my art. I absolutely loved seeing how you used the Inktense Blocks and the stamps with archival ink on the muslin! You have my mind swimming with ideas and just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you sharing this tutorial. Hi Linda, Yes, I love mixed media! I have so many supplies and use them for my fabric projects. It's fun to experiment. Not everything is washable so I do some testing but I find that fiber grabs paint and dyes well and many do fine in the wash. Thanks for watching and happy creating! Julia

Hi Julia it is so good to have you back - another gorgeous project, I love it. I think your handwriting is lovely. I have four boys and the youngest is left handed but I have to say he has really nice handwriting compared with the other three. He told me he always tried harder as his teachers used to say that people who are left handed never have neat handwriting! You both prove them wrong. Also- so glad to hear that you never had a problem with the Pilot pens. I love using! them too. It makes things so much easier. I do have comments that I shouldn't use them on fabric but as long as I test them on the fabric first it should be OK

You are such an inspiration and a natural teacher. It was such a pleasure to watch you create the wall hanging. I am going to try making something similar as I too have art supplies which sit in the cupboard unloved and unused. I thought maybe a bird!
I thought it was awful to add all the patches to that lovely blue fabric. Then when you added all the layers on top, I was liking it more and more. It is amazing what all those tiny details add to the overall piece! Thank you for the video! I never would have thought that the inktense blocks could be used with the Gelli plate like this! WOW

I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your video. I had inktense years ago sold them as I got away from art journaling. Now that I’m quilting I have reintroduced myself to them and have a few Gelli plates. THANK YOU for your inspiration. This is soooo good for the soul!!!

SWEET! I love this project. My mother made several large banners with felt and glue for our church when I was a girl, which your project reminded me of. I have had a quilting project in mind for awhile now, but did not know how I would hang it, which has kept me from diving on in doing it yet. Seeing how you finished this was a slap to my forehead, “why didn’t I think of that.” I think if it needs more support in the middle, I could sew a loop in the center area for the rod or yard stick I use. I liked the additional stamping you did, it added depth to the piece. (I will keep this in mind for fabrics I want to add something more to in the future.) Peace.
Hi Monica, I'm glad you like this method of hanging. It's so easy! I went to my craft store and picked up a thicker dowel- it should work well. I used a 4" square for each of the corners in this project but if the quilt is bigger you could make the squares bigger. Thanks for watching and good luck with your project!

I have just started using the freezer paper and I really like it!
You know, it's amazing how creative minds think! LOL I just ordered a Gelli plate last week - and what shows up on my Feed - THIS video! LOL I had the same thought about doing this on fabric. I'm going in a more abstract direction these days, and this seems like the perfect idea. I know this is an old video, but I'm just starting to stretch my experiences. I've been sewing for decades, and painting things...but never tried making things from Scratch until now. (actually, never had the TIME, until now!!) hahaha

Have you tried making stamps? I would like to include some of my fave bible verses, but have not been able to find a vendor. I have Photoshop Elements, so I can create to word art, but not sure what to do next. Maybe it would be easier to simply run the fabric through my printer.
Hi Bonnie, No I haven't made any stamps. I'm sure there's UA-cam videos on how to do it:) I print words and phrases on fabric and use it in my projects. Most black ink is quite permanent once it is heat set. Colors are not. You may want to test your printer. I have gotten many of my Faith stamps from- www.maymaymadeit.com/

If you iron your quilting on a towel it won't flatten as much. I do this with embroidery and it does make a difference. I love your work (play).

Julia, I could watch you create all day. Really beautiful playful work. I have a question about the Inktense blocks - would you say that is the best way to create your own fabric patterns? Or are there other better products that do the same? I loved your stenciling work too. I am working on similar things but by applique - I don't have a quilting foot on my sewing machine. I also love your writing work! I'm trying various things to accomplish that look with stencils or applique but I don't think I have the control to do it by stiching. Plus, its YOUR work!
Hi, They're are so many ways you can create your own fabric patterns. I am not sure which is the best. I love playing around and using my art supplies in different ways. I find that most paint, etc, are permanent on fabric when you use a fabric medium and heat seat the project once dried. The inktense blocks have a great look- more transparent. Acrylic paint is more opaque. Experiment and find what you like best.

Another beautiful piece Julia, I love it! I’ve recently used Heat n Bond Lite on a piece of cotton batik fabric but I could actually see the glue on the right side of my fabric, like little dots...do you think I over ironed it or perhaps not long enough? Have you ever had this issue? By the way, I used exactly the same brand that you use 🧐
Hi, I have had the same problems with batik fabrics and I'm not sure why. Many batiks are very tightly woven, that could be the reason. Perhaps the temperature or over ironing. I will have to experiment more with it. I love batiks! Thanks for watching! Julia
What a neat project!! Question: when you do the final pressing why do you use the freezer paper and not a non-stick pressing sheet? Doesn't the freezer paper stick down again?
Hi, I used it because it was handy and the right size😊. It stuck a bit but removes very easily. Thanks for helping Misty:)
Since the inktnese products are so expensive, which do you think would be more versatile? the pencils or blocks? Ive only used acrylic paints on fabric so far. love what ive seen on youtube using the inktense
Hi Debra, I usually grab my inktense blocks when I'm working with fabric. I love my pencils too but usually use them in art journals or adult coloring books :)

Hi Julia, your videos are awesome!! I have a question. I've tried using two pieces of muslin with batting sandwiched between, but when I free motion stitch the applique pieces, the muslin really puckers up and looks awful at the edges surrounding the applique pieces. Is there something you might suggest to prevent this? Thank you for sharing your beautiful work.
Misty Davis Here are my thoughts: first, don't put the backing fabric on until the very end so there is one less layer to stitch through; next, make a practice sandwich and try adjusting 1)your stitch length and 2)your tension as either of those may be causing the puckers. Adjust each separately until the problem is fixed. Now you can move on to making your piece without that issue! Last, stitch your backing fabric on, turn right side out, and enjoy!

stitchesbyjulia Glad I could offer some help! I used to work for a sewing machine dealer and many problems have simple solutions: check that you have threaded your machine correctly; clean out the bobbin area and have your machine cleaned internally by a dealer, especially if you sew a lot; and, as I suggested above, adjust the thread tension and/or stitch length. When you change to a different weight thread you'll need to adjust for that, too, as well as for the type of fabric you're sewing. Many of today's machines do many different things and most dealers offer free classes for the machines they sell, a very worthwhile investment! And of course, UA-cam has many excellent resources, one of which is certainly you! ❤️

Hi, I am using the Janome Memory Craft 8200 in this video. Keep in mind that most household sewing machines are capable of free motion stitching. You do need a quilter's foot or a darner foot. Also the feed dogs need to be disengaged. This can be done with a lever that lowers them or a plate that covers them. Thank you so much for watching! Julia

If I accidentally draw in the wrong place of a fabric with intense pencils is there any way to remove it completely from that area
Hi, I have never tried to remove it but I don't think it will wash out completely. It is quite staining.

Hi, Yes the plates come in many different sizes and shapes. I have the big one because I do a lot of fabric for bags etc and need bigger pieces. Gelli printing is a lot of fun and a quick way to add color to something. Thanks for watching! Julia
