    I think I have been living under a rock for the past few years...never seen these Inktense colours. I have been in hospital, and my husband thought that these would give my brain something new to do [I am a pastel artist] OH ... I just can't wait for them to get here!

    Thank you so much for this! I have used inktense blocks on fabric but I just bought a small set (12) pencils hoping for more control. I tend to use the block like watercolors - adding water to them and painting on the fabric. Your tips on NOT washing out the sizing was a game changer for me - i was always dealing with bleed to some extent but I worked with it - often I would use black thread to outline after painting and I was ok with a "doodle like" effect and some paint outside the lines. This will allow a totally different style to add to my creations. Thank you!!!

    When I used ink-tense pencils on a quilt I made (Elizabeth’s Lost dress) I made various samples (washed/unwashed, water/aloe vera/medium) prior to starting on the main project I found the water did bleed out into the surrounding fabric. So I used a fabric medium/water mix. Now I think I will have to have another go after watching these videos to see if I can get it to work better with straight water. I wonder if my calico may have been more open weave than yours Helen which encouraged to water to spread further. I can feel another project coming on. Loved working with the intense pencils.

    • @HelenGoddenQuilts
      @HelenGoddenQuilts  Рік тому

      its the medium that stops it from spreading. Using medium you lose some of the attributes of the pencils. Using just water AND on the right fabric means grea colour blend and movement only where you want it to go

    Helen thanks so much for this video. I have checked out quite a few videos and was frustrated with the outcome. Especially having to use some sort of stabiliser. So your suggestion of just using calico was brilliant. What I am wondering is about the quality of the calico. I bought mine from Spotlight in the curtain section and I find it to be fairly loosely woven with lots of little fabric pieces coming off as I paint. Is this what you use or do you go for the more expensive dress type calico?

    I noticed you were drawing on unbleached muslin. Can I do the same thing on bleached muslin?
    What kind of marker were you using to outline in the end?
    And is the iron all the heat setting that is required?

    Hi Helen. Really enjoyed this video. It opens up so many possibilities. I have one question, which I haven’t found in any of the comments below Part 1 or Part 2 . What do you put under the fabric while you are painting? I was thinking that if you put something absorbent, like another fabric or paper, it could cause the colour to wick out of the fabric you are working on. If you have a non-absorbent surface, like a sheet of plastic say, then it might also cause wicking sideways as it creates an impermeable barrier which makes the moisture flow sideways, depending on how wet the top fabric ends up being, as you blend the colours. So what base do you use under the fabric you are painting on to prevent these two possible problems? Thanks.

    • @HelenGoddenQuilts
      @HelenGoddenQuilts  3 роки тому +2

      I don't use anything absorbent. it would suck colour away from the fabric. I tend to use an old cutting mat as a painting surface. The fabric never gets so soaking wet as to wick underneath. It should not be so wet. If i am doing wet on wet technique where I do pre wet the fabric it is damp thru not sopping wet. In that case I don't move the fabric either or it will sit in a wet patch and wick the colours. I have never had an issue as long as I don't more the fabric around on the cutting mat surface.

    Thank you for all the inspiring information! I have the pencils, but didn't have much of a technique for good results. I can't wait to try your methods. I also went to the Gallery on your website.Your quilting is fantastic and creative - love it! A question - some of your pieces had a large amount of black in background. Did you start with black fabric OR is it painted/colored? Im not aware of black muslin.

      Black fabric but painted with acrylic paint not Inktense. Inktense won’t work on black. It would sink in and not be visible. On black I paint with Lumiere. I have many videos on UA-cam of me painting.

    This is a great tutorial but my muslin evidently isn't the same as yours because mine bled like crazy!

      Do a water flick test. You want the water to bead not bled. If you have trouble sourcing the best muslin, I sell it on my website. helengodden.com/store/calico-muslin-magic-fabric/

    Please ditch the "music". It is so distracting to your talent.

    will the colour wash out if you wash it how do you wash it to keep the colour thank you .

      The colours are permanent once they are activated by water, dry and then iron. It would withstand gentle hand washing but I never wash as my pieces are wall hangings.
