Without exaggeration, no other artist/songwriter has made me find myself rehashing a song's lyrics, thinking about them over and over for days and weeks after hearing them. Some of Adam's words....I find myself asking what exactly he means by some of the words. I think the reason for this is, like most of us listeners, his words touch me for the reason I think that they resonate with us all, and we've all been through an experience in our lives to which we can ascribe some of the lines Granduciel has penned. So maybe the reason we enjoy his music is because we can relate to a similar experience he's been through. I realize part of art is leaving it open to interpretation, but I wish I knew what Adam was meaning and going for with a few of his songs.
"In Reverse": is he coming to terms with his own mortality and the desire to leave a legacy behind? ("When I'm done with my time here
And my keepsake is strong"). Or is he referring to keeping the memory of a past relationship and moving forward from it?
"the road is bare": what does the road represent? Is it a metaphor for life? What exactly is "the grand parade"? Is Adam referring to the busy hustle & bustle of life, filled with its distractions and incessant chatter?
How about "Is there room in the dark, in between the changes?": this is arguably the most poetic line of the song, and its meaning has left me scratching my head for years. What is Adam referring to here? Alluding to the potential to grow into something better out of the darkness that inevitably arises in the wake of a monumental change that wasn't desired (e.g. Adam's breakup to his longtime girlfriend)?
Interesting the last line at 6:19 he changes the lyrics to "I'm like a light; I'm drifting...and in reverse I'm moving."
Any advice on deciphering this gorgeous piece of music? Thanks

It's "the room was bare", not "road" mate.
With that I think he just means his life was empty, that's certainly what I got from the lyric last year after I got dumped by a fit girl and heard the song in a whole new light

    • @dkes53

Pretty sure he is on record as saying there is no great specific meaning to his lyrics. He is more or less a vibey kind of songwriter, which I fully appreciate and it leaves more room for personal interpretation. These people are pulling from the ether and it’s going to affect you how it’s going to affect you regardless of intent.

I don’t understand how this video has 11 👎 and only 48 comments. I play this song every time I hang out with other humans and they all say “that was pretty cool man.” My dog even likes this song. A lot. Come at me please with reasons this is a “dislike”... ✌️ ❤️ 🎸
P.S. what a great Gretsch guitar 🎸 song

    Lyrics:
You've been out on the street
Talking bout the war with me
And the background is at night
    Don't want to hesitate
Will they tell me where you're hiding?
But through the haze there's no one there
    Wondering if you care
Calling out your name in the darkness
When I'm done with my time here
    And my keepsake is strong
    Through the railways
    But I never mind going
And I realize now that the road is bare
And I hear it all through the grand parade
And I don't mind you disappearing
'Cause I know you can be found
Maybe living on the dark side of the street, damn
When we're living in the moment
    And losing our grasp
Making it last with the grand parade in our past
Sometimes I wait for the cold wind to blow
As I struggle with myself right now
As I let her darkness in
But I don't mind chasing you through the back ways for the keys
It evaporates and fades like a grand parade
And I don't mind you disappearing
When I know you can be found
When you living on the dark side of the street, damn
We're just living in the moment, making our past
Losin' our grasp through the grand parade
I'll be here or I'll fade away
Never cared about moving, never cared about now
    Not the notes I'm playing
Is there room in the dark, in between the changes?
Like a light that's drifting, in reverse I'm moving

Yeah, both albums are unreal, I just hope Adam has enough inspiration left to make next one at least half as great! Although it is hard to pick the favourite song among so many good ones, I have to say Thinking About the Place seams the most special. Strangest Things was the first one I heard and I couldn't believe, my thoughts were OMG, how did I not know about this till now 🤔😍 it is shame that such a band isn't up there among most popular and appreciated, cause I don't remember I ever heard them on the radio

    • @mitchellkowalski4861
      @mitchellkowalski4861 5 років тому +3

Aleksandar Gospić yeah they’re not really a radio band but I think that’s what makes them special too. I totally agree with you where thinking of a place is one of their best if not his best. The part from 6:00 - 6:50 is just brilliant I used to replay it 30 times a day. Love em!

If you were to mix Bob Dylan & Neil Young you would end up with TWOD . And that's not a bad thing at all . One shining light in a dark music industry . A Very Good Band indeed .

+Dave Brewer Amen my brother, its time, its way past the time to resurrect things, time to plow fresh new earth & War on Drugs is the "only" band in the past decade that 've seen that is capable of creating a road....!

+Dave Brewer I get Dylan, Petty, and Springstein. Completely agree, one of the very few bands that I can enjoy the entire catalog. There is only 1 song I do not care for and even that is not bad.

Bands are often allotted a certain amount of time to perform, not a certain number of songs on their setlist. This is why bands always play their songs x1.25 or x1.5 on television performances. Truer still when considering large events like Bonnaroo when they need 5 bands to perform on a single stage.
