I live in the DR, and let me tell you that "rich kids" in the context of this video is not really true. The kids of rich people in this country don't play baseball at all. Baseball's mostly seen by poor families as a way to escape poverty and "middle" class families as a vehicle to leave the country or attain real wealth. I make the comment not to detract from your video, which is phenomenal, but to highlight just how precarious Elly's situation was. Those kids he described as "rich" probably qualify as "struggling to make ends meet" in the US. I make the statement because I lived in the US, where I obtained my master's degrees. The struggle these kids go through is hard to even comprehend. Good for Elly, he's a good kid and deserves everything he's accomplished.

Thats very interesting as a Dominican perspective. I just paid for a 3 year old to start playing baseball in Caracas, Venezuela and Elly's story inspires me for this boy. His family has absolutely nothing so I know baseball will be very good for them and a chance to enjoy the difficult life in Caracas and who knows, if a kid like Elly from a tough part of DR can make it, why not our little guy in El Cementerio, Caracas!

Elly is now my favorite player. I haven’t watched baseball in years. I grew up in Kentucky so by default our team was the Reds. I grew up watching the great Pete Rose. Elly reminds me of the same hustle and hard work of Pete Rose. Today I live in Dallas for more than 30 years. I am going to buy tickets for the Rangers vs the Reds to see him in person. I have been watching a lot of baseball this year starting with the baseball classic.

6'5 is a big dude. Therefore he must of been a big boy. To get to the Majors is a fantasy when you're a kid in America. To make it in the Dominican Republic must be unbelievably tough. Got to be strong minded to ignore the enormous challenges. He's definitely got the talent and has made a really big splash. Not to many can hit for power and run lights out. Gotta root for him and the team he plays with. Good fortune young blood, may your stay in America be as successful as two of my favorite players from the Dominican Republic. Big Papi and Pedro Martinez.

What a difference a month makes, eh. Haha. I think people might've jumped the gun on the Elly love. Dude has sucked in July. .221/.261/.361 split for a .621 OPS..... ugly. Not to mention his steady 33% strikeout rate since he was called up (which IMO - hence the slide down to reality). Guy has struck out 61 times in only 187 plate appearances as I write this. In a typical full season a guy usually gets about 680 plate appearances. With his 32.6% strikeout rate that would put him on pace for..... 222 strike outs in a season. Yikes.
To date on the year he has posted a .264/.310/.443 slash line. I know in today's HORRIBLE product MLB that's... pretty good. But in the context of the sports history that's shit. That's pretty much what an AVERAGE hitter would slash only about 15 years ago and earlier.... if not slightly worse as the average hitter back then would get in base at around a .320-.330 clip. In today's anemic hitting league where the average hitter slashes .240/.310/.400 - Elly is great. Compare that though to the average hitter in... say... 2010.... the year I pinpoint being the beginning of MLB's product quality downfall.... the average hitter slashed .257/.325/.403. Elly is marginally better than that. Look at the average hitter in 2008 though.... .264/.333/.416.... yeah. Elly would be a run of the mill player back then.
Because of this MASSIVE downfall in the quality of MLB's product is why my interest has waned considerably over the last decade. Which is disheartening because I used to be an obsessive diehard fan of the game. I just look at the product now though..... and it fucking sucks ass. Starting lineups are LOADED with dudes hitting .250 and under with OBPs barely over .300. These bums would be bench players in the aughts and earlier. If not the proverbial "quad A" caliber player. Like all the Joey Gallos.... Kyle Schwarbers... Miguel Sanos... etc of the league today - none of this guys would have remotely close to the length of the career they're having/had if they played a decade or 2 earlier. They'd be perpetual triple A players/ September callups.... maybe a fill in when a guy goes down with injury. They'd DEFINITELY not be starters and they CERTAINLY wouldn't be fucking All Stars with their .200 batting averages. AND they certainly wouldn't be getting paid 8 friggin figures a season to not even hit their weight in batting average and barely get on base at a 30% clip. Back in the day on a good team the WORST starter/ every day player would hit like.... .260 with a .320-.330 obp and be at the bottom of the order. That's like top of the order material nowadays.
Take the 1997 Cubs (I'm a Cubs fan). They finished the year with 94 LOSSES. They started the year 0-14. As a team those bums hit.... .263/.321/.391. Of their everyday starters they had only 2 guys hit below .260.... Brian McRae at .240 with a .329 obp..... and.... Sammy Sosa at .251 with a pathetic .300 obp. Sammy Sosa was quite possibly the worst hitter on that team. Now he did hit 36 of the teams 127 home runs (28.3%) but still. Of all position players who got at least a single at bat that year only 8 guys hit under .260. 8. Of the 2023 Cubs the ones deemed "starters" (ones with most ABs) there's 4 guys hitting sub .260 in just their starting lineup.... Mancini, Happ, wisdom, and Suzuki. They have 11 other positron players listed who've obtained at least 1 AB this year..... 9... NINE of the 11 are hitting under 260. 7 of them are hitting .241 or under.
It's fucking pathetic. Back to those 97 Cubs and their .263 team batting average. They finished in a tie with the 2nd WORST record. They finished 15th of 28 teams in batting average. A .263 team batting average in 2022 would've put them 2nd in the league..... behind the blue Jays last year.... and their .264 team batting average. This year they'd be in a tie for 4th.
Hitting. Is. Dead. And as a result MLB is hard to watch. IMO.... it's become unwatchable. Everyone sucks. If you're a younger fan... you don't know any better. Consider yourself lucky. But when you grew up with the mindset that a guy was just an alright player if he couldn't hit .300 all these "stars" off today's boring ass game look... well... they look like shit. I think like 11 guys in all MLB hit at least .300. That's so terrible. Back in the day pretty much every All Star would hit .300.
    1998 NL lineup
2B Craig Biggio.... .325 BA for the year
RF Tony Gwynn.... .321 BA for the year
1B Mark McGwire.... .299 BA for the year
LF Barry Bonds.... .303 BA for the year
3B Chipper Jones.... .313 BA for the year
C Mike Piazza.... .328 BA for the year
CF Larry Walker.... .363 BA for the year... and hitting 7th!!
SS Walt Weiss.... the "bum" of the group... who hit .280 for the year.
I think this year the NL team had like 3 guys hitting over .300. 3. The AL team had 2. Look at that 98 NL lineup. They're all HOFers or SHOULD be HOFers accept for Weiss. How many guys on the NL team do you think wind up in the HOF? Acuna. Betts. Freeman. Arenado. JD Martinez?
Those guys are good players. Good. But none of them hold a candle to Biggio, Piazza, McGwire, Bonds, Walker, Jones and Gwynn. I'd take Walker, Gwynn, or Bonds over Betts and acuna all day. Freeman and McGwire is a tougher call, I'll give Freeman that. But I'll take Jones over Arenado. And Piazza over.... Sean Murphy.... hmm. Let me think. Haha
Oh... and Biggio over Arraez is a no Brainerd too. Arraez and his .376 BA is a breath of fresh air from yesteryear don't get me wrong. But wake me up when he has 290+ career home runs, 3000+ hits, 4 GGs, and 5 SS. Oh... and makes the HOF. I won't hold my breath.

I'm a reds fan. Grew up listening to em at five and remember Rose as player-manager, Dave Parker, Tom Browning.
So i was of course a huge Eric Davis fan. Still am. He was such an electric player to watch- strong arm, fast, power hitter. I remember the '86 Mets and Darryl strawberry. These guys were my childhood heroes.
When i heard someone was wearing 44 as a rookie i had to watch. This person was an in organization that wouldn't just let anyone wear that number. They know what it means.
Every expectation i had of watching this new 44 has been exceeded. He's something I've never seen. If he stays injury free there's no limit to what he can accomplish. I'm a believer in this young man.
He's currently enjoying an 18 game hitting streak. He brings enjoyment back to the game. You know how refreshing that is? I love watching baseball again because of him. He's a world champion.

As a Reds fan, I watched the beginning of the 2023 season and was not impressed. Elly came in June a met with a few other rookies and a couple of yearlings. Wow, they took off and the baseball world started to pay attention to Cincinnati. Elly was impressive but he could only maintain his lightning speed as an asset. The others were hitting and running and fielding like they were all stars. We all waited for Elly to rejoin the party he crashed. His problem was hitting...rather not hitting. When he did put the barrel on the ball, it was jaw dropping. Our only hope was that he would get a walk or, in a few cases, became a pitch runner. You have to see this kid run....ok he's a deer in disguise! Steals 3 bases (one being home) on two pitches! Hits for the cycle within a 4-6 weeks of stepping on the field. I believe the saving grace for Elly this year, especially during his brutal drought, was his teammates. Young in body and mind and fearless teammates would keep him on the edge. Yes, there was very young extreme talent on this team but it was the spirit and fun the kids had. It was contagious. I couldn't wait for the next game to see what the heck these guys were going to do to win a game. Unfortunately, they got a late start and didn't win enough...barely. If you lost your love for the game, watch the Reds in '24 for at least a month and you will be smacked by the love bug again. Oh yeah, pitching was less exciting. Hopefully there will be a bunch show up and want to join the fun...and stay healthy. One last point about "Flash"....Elly, especially late in the season, looked like he was lost in the batter's box. He had little to no clue what the ball was going to do or even where it was at. Don't even mention the sliders he saw...or didn't. I'm hoping the coaching staff will have helped Elly to be more comfortable in the box and more capable of hitting more than a straight fast ball sizzling over the plate waist high! Thank you Reds for a fun season to watch baseball. I feel there is more in store for us in '24 and hoping the youngsters don't lose their childlike enjoyment for the game. It was great.

Praying for Ely to stay away from tools of EVIL and his career will soar. Go to Holy Mass when you can and thank your Heavenly Father before you go to sleep. The Holy Spirit has brought him this far and will continue to stay close.

Wow he’s just a kid still. But it seems like he’s had real-life guardian angels and cheerleaders the whole way up! The big leagues are extremely more stressful and panic inducing than the minor leagues, I hope he continues to have people in his corner to guide every step of his amazing career to come!

Elly has his moments but I think he’s overrated! He’s awesome if he can get on base but that’s the problem. 💯

Don't forget towards the end of his career he's going to pack on some age weight and his reflexes are going to slow down. Now he won't be quite the hot shot that he is now. So I'll put it at 7 or 8

Elly The Electric Red is phenomenal.
But he might not even be the best rookie on the REDS this year = that might go to Matt McLain who is just lighting the league on fire, somehow - mostly because of Elly, he is doing it quietly.
And Andrew Abbott is pitching his way into the record books logging 18-innings of no-hit baseball which is the first pitcher to do that in over 125 years (or at least the first RED...need to check the stats on that one).
And then there is Steer. And Christian Encarnacion-Strand will be coming up soon as well and will give them a run for their money for REDS RoY....probably the MLB RoY.
This is a wonderfully exciting time to be a Cincinnati REDS fan!!

Rich kids in DR do have their own little leagues. But they don't play baseball as serious as the poor kids. Something interesting to be discussed on your next video.
