This is really a fun project - I think you guys will enjoy it.
Idea for drill planting seeds, I made my back sore bending into tasks yesterday then viewed your vid. While going to sleep I imagined about a 4ft straight hollow light weight pipe, (pvc?) drop in a seed and it pops out the other side where you want it. I hope to remember this myself. @@7hilladelphia Lots of good DIY designs for pvc planters on You Tube with hoppers, adjustable doll rods for poking the perfect hole b4 dropping the seed & adjustable spacers. A good design uses 3/4 in pvc for larger bean seed.

@The Real Huck Finn I'm not too far from Washington, Mo. My old man smoked a corn cob pipe from them. He took me to the factory along the river as a kid. I don't remember that trip, but I drive by when I'm in the area. Nice rivertown. They also had a Zither factory back in the day.
@@7hilladelphia I've been doing that for years! If you don't want to spend the money on that, if you've got one of those cheap metal mop or broom handles around somewhere, just take a hacksaw and cut off the plastic part and there ya go!
I had planned on doing that...sort of. Was going to plant Bloody Butcher next to my white corn, but my corn seed just got in and I think the time gap might be too wide by the time hubby gets the other section tilled up.
We'll see. Also got some ornamental, I plan to pick out all of the yellow and mix the rest wit the bloody butcher.
Once I grew Hopi blue Indian corn. When it got fully matured I ground it and made cornbread with it. It was a best tasting cornbread I have ever had
My FIL was a plant geneticist and worked his entire career for the USDA after he earned his PhD in 1948 after WW2. He developed the hairless sugarbeat and was written up in the Smithsonian magazine 😁 Just an old farm boy from Texas. I was not the avid gardener in the 90's as I am now but I always think of him when I'm working on genetics in my garden with my artist right brain. 🙃😝

My husband asked me the other day what our new garden style is called. I said " It's called do whatever you feel like doing that day." He said " don't be a smart@$$." I said "We are garden anarchists" and he said "I don't like politics." I said " But do you like lots of vegetables?" He just stared at me blankly. Lordy what would he do if I dumped all the corn varieties on the table and mixed them all up? It might be mutiny.

This is funny, I took 7 kinds of garden peas (shelling peas) and mixed them all up and planted them and plan to save the seeds. I want my own type of peas! I'm not sure peas will cross as easy as corn, but it don't hurt to try. This world needs more crazy people who want their own variety of seeds. God bless & keep growing

I got so excited when you opened a packet of Looney corn! I’m from Winchester, TN originally and that’s where it originated, named for the Looney family. I heard of that corn decades ago and was told that it was once widely grown in that area but we couldn’t find any source for the seed and assumed it had been lost. In more recent years I had even looked for it online just in case it was still out there somewhere. I had to pause the video and look it up on Southern Exposure and sure enough, it’s the same corn! Thank you David the Good! You have truly lived up to the name!

If your growing season is long enough, will you do a second planting of the original mix or try to plant any from what grows this year? I usually get in 3 plantings of sweet corn, in NE AL, purposely choosing varieties that produce in 75-85 days. I am letting them cross as well as most are hybrids and I want something more sustainable. I may try doing the middle planting with a bunch of the field/dent corn varieties I've been collecting. It's refreshing to see others be "mad scientists" in the garden to try to get plants that grow and produce well in your specific climate. My goal is to grow food and lots of it is as fast and economically as possible with as little outside inputs as possible. Thanks for inspiring me.
I think some of the types he planted is 120 day corn so pretty unlikely he could do 3 plantings. Maybe 2.
I have grown Painted Mountain flour corn. It was developed by Dave Christensen using the same method of mixing 1000 varieties of Indian and commercial corn for a very challenging northern area. This corn will reliably produce a crop. You are on the right track! Good luck!
All the different colors of the corn kernels together like that were beautiful. Biodiversity is biosecurity. I hope lots of people understand this.

Yes, everyone sees that it is beautiful. But if you delve deeper into the topic, you realize that having such a colorful corn is rather detrimental to the taste and usability.

Ahhhh literally was debating about do I try to bag to preserve the varieties... I also bought several different varieties of corn to see what would do well in our area. Thanks for the encouragement to just let nature do what it does! And now I will also be planting with my feet 🤪
I did the same thing before planting bush beans, last weekend. Hopefully something good comes out of both of our projects.
Sorry to tell you, bush beans don't hybridize easily at all. They tend to self pollinate before the blooms even open. Seed will almost certainly come true to type.
I always mix up my bush bean. But I didn't learn about seed saving until this year so I can't wait to see what happens a couple yrs down the line
White eagle corn is actually kind of bluish purple. But if you look at the base of each kernel you will see a little white eagle. You're going to wind up with some weird looking corn. Lol
We call it letting the corn dance! The eagle corn is white and dark like a bald eagle. Sending prayers to great spirit.. 👍
Just was reading Carol Depe. I didnt know dent and flint corn were different. I thought they were different names for dry grain corn but basically the same. She distinguishes some corn as better for Johnny cakes and others better for corn flour. I got a lot to learn.
I finally nixtamalized corn for the first time. Didnt have a corn grinder so I used my food processor. I had to add more water to get it to mix after nixtamalization. Ended up making a ground beef masa casserole with pepper jack cheese and beef tallow . super filling and tasty. Lasted 4 days.

Our family dogs always seem to chow down on dried corn surprisingly enough. We rent out a backfield and whenever semi-spent cobs are around they'd munch happily. Just typical feed corn too, nothing sweet, maybe the freezes make them sweeter?

I went to Southern Mexico several years ago and saw a dog tied in the yard with a lot of dried whole corn on the ground and he was eating it. Must be dog food in some countries.
Just be careful they don't eat the cob! Wife is a vet tech and they do a fair number of foreign body surgeries on dogs that ate a corn cob :(
Careful with the Cobs, they can cause a blockage in the intestine if eaten (I used to be a Vet tech and this was very common).

I think the different varieties will grow and pollinate, even thou they have different grow rates... I usually have a few corn seeds that doesn't germinate, So i will push some more seeds down in the row.They are behind in size, but will tassel the same time as the (older) taller stalks.

This should be interesting. Last year I grew some Pojoaque Blue from Baker Creek. This year I’m gonna do some Hickory King, mostly to grow for seed. The Blue did very well and I saved a bunch of seeds but I’m really wanting the biomass from the much bigger stalks and the bigger cobs.

Use a gift wrap tube and drop the seeds down it into the hole where you want it planted so you don’t have to bend over. Obviously it works with some things better than others:)

Yes a most TOTALLY Fun Project, I'm already itchin' to see the outcome, here in Querétaro, white and red corn are planted,where the white corn borders with the red corn, the corn comes out speckled and its just as tasty as the parent white and red corn. That last corn you stated was white but not really white, dark blue, sounds similar to what we know here as 'Cacahuatzintle',this corn when tender, its huge kernels are white,as the corn matures they turn a deep blue color and this corn is great cooked fresh as well as the ground mature blue colored kernels. Thanks for sharing David, and wishing ya a great corn🌽🌽🌽harvest! 😊

I dont grow much corn but I watch a lot of videos. The white eagle type you referred to, I believe, is supposed to be blue but have an image like an eagle or a distant seagull on a painting, on the top face of the kernel.
I haven't had much luck with growing corn seed past 2 years FYI, we grow them in containers so we can throw over bird net for seed saving. So if you're planning on doing this sort of thing; try buy new seeds to get a better crossbreed over the two year span where you can take seed saved from last year and add more diversity with the following two seasons while you still can...

I've been seriously considering making my own personal squash variety that suits my family's tastes. I'm going to start this year. I'm growing yellow straight, zucchini and pan patty, and I'm going to hybridize everything with everything, and see what happens

Omg that is the way I have covered acres of seed my family planted all during young my life. People do not know how glorious it feels to have your feet in the dirt like that(until you get in a plow disturbed ant bed so you go pretty fast while covering).
Very cool project. I am inspired to mix corn varieties now. I got grain corn seed from salamander permaculture farms in Kentucky and grew it out last year but would have not thought to tamper with the years of breeding work. but I have so much seed now. 5 gallon bucket of it. And still have original 1lb packet with some seed. Room to experiment for sure.

I dont think you want to cross polinate anything with your sweet corn. Unlike tomatoes whose genetics show in the next generation, corn is the actual seeds itself and will show the genetics of both parents in the season you plant it so you may end up with kernels of flint or dent in amongst your sweet kernels

I should send some of our corn to you .. it is 8 row, 10 row, 12 row, 14 row, dent, flint, grey, black, red, white, purple, blue, and speckled. What ever genetics wind up expressing well in your area, that would be your 'native' corn.
I like your gardening plan and I look forward to seeing how it turns out. Maybe you should explain to people that are new to gardening who might copy your method, that you shouldn't mix "sweet corn" with "field corn" because they might not know it can effect the corn in a bad way. Also, you might want to talk about SE and SU sweet corn mixing as well. We once did a video about how to prune "fruit trees" and some of our friends watched our videos and pruned their lemon tree the way you should prune a stone fruit tree. They didn't know that a lemon tree is a full canopy tree that should not have an open center.
Yeah, that's no good. I never grow sweet corn, but that would have been a good note to add.

I think it's a great idea to let corn cross pollinate. I think it helps it adapt to the area and climate
I'm mixing blue clarage, pungo creek bloody and bloody butcher this year. I'm hoping to get a strong, good mix for me and the chickens in a few years. Plus I like playing mad scientist!

I have to say that is a really cool idea we have heirloom ox hearts and beef steak tomatoes that Have been in my family for seven generations in the same relative area and we actually do get some cross pollination between the ox hearts and the beef steaks we generally don’t save those For seed but now I’m thinking I might do that Still keep seed separate for both the ox hearts in the beef steaks but have a separate hybrid seed and see how it does

The Hickory Cane was sturdier and more cold tolerant than Hickory King when I started them side by side as an experiment in Feb of last year in Augusta GA. It beat out Kentucky Rainbow and Truckers Favorite yellow too.
Wish seed companies would cite sources for their claims. I know a lot of it is just hooey but I trust Southern Exposure more than most.

This reminds me, I would love to see a video where you talk about the different general types of corn - that is, dent corn vs flint corn vs sweet corn vs popcorn (which I recently found out is not just a way of preparing corn, but actually a particular variety of the plant). There are so many varieties out there and they're all so colorful, I'm always tempted to buy ALL of them and I really can't afford to. So I'd love to be able to figure out what kinds I should be focusing on based on which ones are best for a particular culinary use and which ones will grow best in my climate.

I am so curious how this will go. I have been thinking the same thing with my sheep and goats. Have you heard about Colin Seis and pasture cropping? You might try hitting the weeds with the goats one more time before the corn comes up.

I made tiger popcorn. Red/orange stripes on a white and yellow kernel. I need to mix poofier variety of popcorn though. Its neet.
