I may not have been so much being "told" to dress up, as it was more of an understanding at that time as to what was considered "tasteful" attire. In the process of trying to be different and make profound personal statements, people have lost a lot of grace and esthetic sense. This is ironic for those who are working in what is supposed to be an "artistic" medium.
