This movie has very quickly earned a spot in my heart since I first watched it a few weeks ago. I'm a hobbyist digital artist but alas I am no animator. I hope at some point I may be able to help in some way with this movie. It deserves to be completed and shown off like the masterpiece it is. The animators have so far done an amazing job! 💖
Garrett, I speak as a fan of Richard Williams when I say thank you for continuously working on thief and the cobbler. Seeing this finished animation clips assures me that we will see the thief and the cobbler as it was intended.
I'm not an animator, and I don't knowhow I'll be able to contribute, but I do have a question: Will CGI be used [with toon shading] on the more complex unfinished scenes from the film? Like stuff in the War Machine, or with moving backgrounds? If it isn't, then I understand, to keep things to the whole thing about the film, which is that it wasn't done with computers, but if so, then I don't really care that much, and hopefully he [Richard Williams] wouldn't think it'd be disrespecting his film if you went that route with a few scenes.
Tack was always meant to be a silent protagonist. The Recobbled Cut is meant to be faithful to Williams' original vision. If you're talking about his voice at the end, I think the point was that it was meant to give a feeling of whiplash, given that Williams originally wanted to get Sean Connery to do that role.
I canot draw for shit, but I wish you all the luck. This project deserves 100% completion, just on its own merits as a monumental work of animated art, and also as a tribute to Richard.
Oh yes! I was just commentating about this yesterday! I really hope you can find the right people to finish the unfinished scenes and everything! Then finally Richard’s version will be completed! I really hope this works! (I think if you really wanted to to, maybe it’s possible for some of the original animators for the film that love your restoration could help with that in some way, (I know probably 90% are a lot older and everything but that’s always a possibility too if you can’t find the right people…. But I’m sure in some way they could contribute again too if that whole part of the project isn’t possible… I read rumors too that a lot of Richard’s animation to the film is lost and everything, so I’m not sure if some of the unfinished parts of the storyboards in animation form are out there to complete some of those scenes that way, I’m sure you could probably get a lot of it if you research and ask around someone who was apart of Richard’s company or estate would have to know where those could be or?) I can’t animate unfortunately so unfortunately there’s no way I could help, but I’m supporting all this every step of the way! Let’s go! Let’s make Richard proud! :)
The Recobbled Cut contains about ten minutes of scenes in storyboard form which were never animated. While it's not feasible to complete the film, Dennis Van Hout and Kiko Pablo have animated four new shots, and I am doing new restoration work on large sections of the film.
@@TheThiefArchive Oh yay! Maybe they could do thier own version of this with those unfinished scenes with your version, (with your permission of course), are they restoring any of those unfinished scenes reanimating all of them or? I would think they could probably do all that one day if they are doing it that way and combine it with this. :)
The Thief and the Cobbler was released almost 30 years and I want to suggest something we can do in commemoration of the film. What if we made a special edition DVD of the film including the Recobbled Cut with completed animation and maybe the two theatrical cuts. As well as bonus features like interviews with people who worked on the film who are still alive and other stuff like that. I'm not sure how (or if) this would even be possible, but this would be a great way to commemorate a film milestone.
I know this may be a controversial opinion for fans of the late Richard Williams’ wanted vision, but I’m all for a fan made version of that movie that has the unfinished animation and storyboards handled by other animators who can do that professionally.
As someone who works on a big passion project myself, I wanted to thank you for all your efforts, the years you've put into this, and I wanted to say how much I really enjoy this film. I'm around the same age as you, so I have the fortunate disposition of getting to completely forget the entire thing and watch it again every couple years as if it were brand new. Thank you.
I love the film, Though i'm wondering what would be the hardest scene to ever restore. Also when rewatching it, I noticed that there are some things that are animated on twos instead of ones. And sometimes it's a mix of both ones and twos at the exact same time (the thief and the flies that fly around him for example) I guess it's a good way to show that Richard Williams pretty much distracts you with the smooth 24 frames per second animation. Meaning that you can actually have some scenes that are animated on twos, you just gotta mix it up with on ones as well. Also I was NOT expecting to find out that Fido the Vulture is voiced by Donald Pleasance, most famous for being Samuel Loomis in Halloween 1978.
The final shot you showed with the Thief on the tightrope, do you plan on keeping the pillar tower monochrome as it appeared in the original unfinished shot, or will it be colored as it appears in the Allied/Miramax cuts + later on when the three balls burst through its windows?
The thought had occurred to me but it's not currently a priority. It would be difficult to create the appropriate animated mattes via EBSynth and other techniques. I have, in this version, replaced the unfinished section of the city background with a finished-ish version, largely recreated from other parts of the background.
I'm surmising there is no way to watch the original The Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled Cut since its a bit legally dubious to simply post online, correct?
The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut is available at this channel in most territories (depending on whether it's blocked for copyright), and on my archive .org channel (ocpmovie)
If you're looking for money as donations, how about sites like Patreon or GoFundMe or the likes? Surely, there is some sort of option out there that you could use if people wanted to donate money. PayPal supports that as well. What forms of donations can you take as of current?
I definitely must congrats to you and for those who has evolved on this Mark 4.2 and with new animated footages which I'll be looking forward to it when its finished! Quick question: Will it be released on UA-cam or in Cinemas in honor of the late Richard Williams and maybe perhaps on DVD and Blu-Ray Disc?
This might not be important, but are you going to add more of Robert Folk's score in the Rocobbled Cut 4-2? The reasons I say this is 1. I kinda like the score, despite it imitating James Horner in some places. Don't get me wrong 'Arabian Knight' and 'Princess and The Cobbler' truly do pale against the original vision, but the score was good. 2. When listening to said score, I've noticed that there are a few cues that aren't in the 'Arabian Knight' and 'Princess and the Cobbler' versions, and it would be interesting to see them used in this upcoming cut. However if you're not a fan of Robert Folk's score, and just want to use classical music or go a step further get a composer to produce an original score, I completely understand 100%. Best of luck to this new Recobbled Cut. I know it's going to be fantastic.
Garrett said a few times that using less of Robert Folk's score was his own creative choice made for the Recobbled Cut. I doubt there will be no Folk's music at all in Mark 5 but we'll see about that.
Hm. But what about painting scenes that look almost finished? For example the shot of Mighty One-Eye saying "And not show pity!". I have a girlfriend who is not an animator but is really good at painting. Is there an interest in such a thing?
I'm sure you guys are going to do an amazing job. I'm an artist but I'm not sure I have enough time and skills for helping... This movie is too wonderful, it's a challenge only for professionals. Good luck, I'll be waiting for the final result!!!
Its the ability for a project like this to progress because of current accessible technology that keeps me so hopeful and excited for animation and film restoration. Amazing work!
Oh oh! I wonder if this film will ever be finished, which film studio is going to distribute this finally finished animated masterpiece? Is it Warner Bros, Paramount or MGM? Also, will it finally be released in theaters? Probably getting a win or nominated for Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Cesar. As an animation fan, I am so supporting for this film to be finished, as well as some people doing some finished voice overs. Like in the one from the 1990 script of the Thief and the Cobbler. Will it still be able to be released in theaters?
