- Do you have a check engine light on for the EGR being clogged? Here is how you remove the intake manifold and clean it. This is also how to replace an intake gasket. This applies from 1990-1997, but should be similar to the 1998-2005 Miata's.

Thanks for the video! The most informative and helpful one I could find online. Was able to get my EGR cleaned out and found a leaking injector at the same time. Car running like a top now. Thanks for saving me money!
Glad it helped you out!
Well described. No wasted words. Just a very clear narration and demonstration. Thank you.
About to buy a used Miata with this issue for a steal of a price. Good to know the job isnt difficult
Thank you so much for your great support.Today With your video I managed to repair my car
Great video, I've been meaning to get around to this but after seeing you do it first, it sure will make the job go quicker. Watching other people do the work on UA-cam is so helpful, so much time saved. Thanks!
My '97 just threw a P0400 code. This is very helpful, thanks!
You are welcome! Glad it helped.
Great video. Really helped me out a lot.
How do u reach the bottom nuts on the manifold
Great video!
Awesome man thanks
Do you need to also put a new gasket between the intake manifold and the throttle body?
Thanks
I wanted to know how you got the bottom to the right bolt off .
G@@D INFORMATION - but - it would have HELPED me considerably = if you would have kept the CAMERA rolling ... while you took the FUEL-RAIL out & when you removed the INJECTORS ... I missed so much of what I wanted to SEE because you only focused on your EGR Valve removal & cleaning ---
Thank YOU for the VIDEO and the How-To on the EGR ( I had no idea that this passageway even existed or that it could become this CLOGGED !) = thanks again
Quick question. Csn i just light the inside on fire and blow it out? Or is there something in there that shouldn't burn. Because i have seen people just burning it out. Propably not because of the vics flaps
This whole process could be avoided with the Otis cable-based gun cleaning kit. You can just feed it in top to bottom after you pop the EGR valve off.
Link for it?
You should change your radiator, looks like about to burst soon.
did it fix the egr problem?
Great video! are you using any chemicals like throttle body cleaner to help the process?
Yes, throttle body cleaner will help get more of that carbon out.
Damico?
Hey, can you write something about symptoms of clogged EGR? Can it cause stalling and dieing, but only when engine is cold?
Nevermind, EGR is removed anyway :P
While I was removing the fuel line this little part broke off and I think it was the fuel injector pressure damper
This car is my daily but I’m not sure about the aftermarket part to replace it
How do you know you have a clogged egr valve? I have a p0410 & p0171 code on my nb1 Miata.
Might be a bit late but that may be clogged injectors or fuel pump issue, sounds like a fuel issue rather than an exhaust issue. I'd check your fuel pressure first before doing anything.
Did you end up figuring that out i have the same codes
9:10 - Looks Like Coffee , maybe that's how they get coffee? What do you think?
how did you remove the bolts that is under the manifold? I can't really reach them... :(
you have to feel around with your ratchet. I had to use different lenth extentions for different bolts. also flex head ratchets really come in handy when doing this. You won't be able to see them so you have to just stick your arm down in there and decide how long of an extension you'll need. I believe I used a wrench on one of them as well.
Yeah, it was a great pain to remove and reinstall those bolts.... it was really really bad; I don't wanna do it again unless I have engine out. However, thank you for the video and reply. It really helped!
So sad man the part I needed was the fuel rail removal
Could this fix a P0420 code?
Christ I hope so, I have the same problem.
Did it work? Just got this code
Dan Maynez no my P0420 code was caused by a bad catalytic converter. From the backside it looked fine, even had proper pressure readings and such. I found an ISR exhaust locally brand new and put it on and code went away. Cut the other side of my pipe off the old cat and the material inside had started to fuse pretty bad.
Came to this video to see how you got to the lower manifold bolts, wasted my time noticing you skipped it
I got a code for p0402 and I replaced my egr valve, and cleaned my throttle body and intake manifold but still have the code. Do you recommend anyrhing?
Does it still run bad? Did you clear the code after replacing those parts? It may need some time to reset if you did not clear the code.
Did you ever get yours fixed? My 99 is throwing "P0402: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected" and I don't even know where to start.
Did you ever figure it out? Mine is doing the same thing. Runs like a champ, but don’t want to start buying the EGR valve if it’s not going to fix it
Did you ever figure this out? I have the same code and can’t seem to figure out how to fix it as well and have been trying to research a lot too
