If the smallest, most unavoidable faux-pas, including ones God made us with (homosexuality) will send us to hell, and any Christian goes to heaven regardless of their lives, afterlife isn't about punishment or reward. It's just God surrounding himself with worshipers and sending anyone who doesn't think he's the greatest, most merciful creature ever to eternal punishment. How is that merciful, just, or anything but unbelievably narcissistic and cruel?
Katherine S. - Exactly! Heaven is a celestial North Korea, where everyone must worship the "beloved leader," or else... At least, in North Korea, you can fucking die and get escape. Not in heaven. You're there for *eternity.* - Christopher Hitchens Thankfully, as Shelley says in her awesome song, it's all bullshit. Obviously made up by primitive people, to manipulate other primitive people.
What a weird ride I've been on, From Catholic to agnostic, to atheo-pagan, to finally realizing I was always just a down to earth Atheist. This song is so beautiful, I wish I could have found it sooner!
So am I hearing that if atheists ran the world there would be no law? Because surely you wouldn’t want to tell anyone how to live their lives....it’s their life after all they only get one xddd
4000? *sigh* When they can't even be wrong correctly. The Exodus is claimed to have happened 4000 years ago. Even if you go "ultra literal scriptural interpretation = 100% reality", there's time before that, and a good amount.
OMG. It's you Shelley! Never saw the notices that my post here had any replies! So a year later, here goes: No. Never got to play it for her (she is a coworker actually). My plan was to play it in my car on the way back from lunch - just in the background to see if she noticed the lyrics... and then I hoped to have a calm discussion on the topic. I pushed back all the time (for many years) on her fundamentalist statements, but the "A" word had never come up. She knew I wasn't a fundamentalist - but I never told her I don't believe AT ALL. So I think she always had hope of SAVING me. As we got in my car that day, I turned the radio on and the Bluetooth reconnected with my phone, which then lit up with The Thinking Atheist logo (as that was the podcast playing when I last had the radio on). She saw it and her mouth dropped open. She asked my why I'd listen to something about atheism. So I spilled the beans. She freaked out. "ATHESIST! YOU ARE AN ATHEIST!!!" On and on she went about how could anyone believe everything was an accident, and how could I know right from wrong. How could I be so stupid? Believing in evolution is like a twister going through a junkyard and assembling a 747... (Yes - she actually parroted that old one!) She didn't even let me talk. Sadly it went down hill from there over time. She sent a few emails trying to convince me I was wrong, but that eventually stopped as she didn't like my replies. Now we only say "Hi" when crossing in the hallways at work. Awkward. I have a few other fundamentalist YE creationist co-workers who also preach at me occasionally, but I now do not want to risk a repeat of creating more awkward relationships at the office. Very sad.BTW... I look forward to The Atheist Experience every week even more than before since they use your song as the intro. Often it gets me to pull it up on my iPhone and play the entire thing afterwards. Not at work though. Best Regards!
Almost? I played it so many times in a row trying to learn the melody and timing that I _almost_ can listen through the whole song without shedding a tear and I can also _almost_ sing it without breaking XD But I _will_ fucking sing it! I'm going on a holiday with my friends and they're all musicians, sooooooo I figured, since I finally got myself to do cover songs, I blow them away with this one :D If I don't break :p But it's fine if I do. I get plenty of chances to make up for it and they more than understand :D It does help to not see Shelley sing it :p That naughty radiant sun really makes it hurt more how people are (often voluntarily and often forcefully) held back by dogma to not be that shiny bright star that Shelley is.

Hands down the best athiest song I've ever heard👏👏👏 thank you shelley segal for expressing your amazing voice.

The ironic thing about your very true statement is that Christians use (sometimes) lovely and moving songs to reinforce their feelings of belief. Awesome God by Mullins is an example that comes to mind. Maybe MUSIC is the real power in the universe.
My feelings *exactly!* While I have religious family members, I grew up in an atheist household. We never read the Bible, we never attended church, unless invited to attend a service, and the only time we discussed religion was to laugh at the bullshit said by the likes of Franklin Graham, Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell (Sr.), Jim Bakker, etc. Thank you Shelley Segal for this song.

And when you are dooms-daying
How you think you know that someone is listening to what you are saying
CHORUS
So you think that you

Never questioning the source from which your moral code derives
You think that suffering is part of some great plan that's been devised
I wonder, I wonder
When we'll be rid of your lies
Say I need to hear the truth
A sales-pitch of eternal life and eternal youth
All these blessings you are bestowing
Upon the one you say is all-knowing
Are they really deserved if He is sending me where you say I am going?

So you think that you
Can tell us how to live our lives
Never questioning the source from which your moral code derives
You think that suffering is part of some great plan that's been devised

@@kingflame6588Thats sad, I am in the same boat. I don't know how my family will respond, so I am waiting until Im financially independent tell them.
@@StrikerEureka13 i the thing worse part is they can be as open as they want about Thier beliefs they don't know the pain of having to hold it in just you can make ends meat.
This is the first time I've heard the full song.
Blown away! Love it!
Thanks JC :)
Shelley Segal No, thank you, Shelley!
One of the first to get that.
I love this song!
Wow! There's something so moving about the way you encompass these messages of freedom in your music; it's not often I find a new favourite artist, and this is one of those times.
Such a beautiful voice and lyrics are exactly true.
Al Acton Thaaaaanks :)
Shelley Segal your so welcome really enjoying the music
I'm gonna buy the album today.
I can't believe you're still hearting and responding to comments after 8 years. I wish more artists were like you.
She's still at it, this is what passion for your music and message looks like
A Team!
I love the octave jump from "what will it" to "take for you". Super effective. Also, I've been binging the podcast for days (I had a cold) and I finally picked up my guitar from the floor and started playing along. :D Certified hood classic!
Love this! Hope I get to hear a cover version one day 🤩🤩
@@ShelleySegal Compared to yours, my singing is rather ... I sing to my cat. She loves it, but she's obviously biased.
I could maybe accompany someone who's actually good at singing. My guitar fu is actually improving, largely thanks to YT.
+Katherine S. His words/laws are his own indictment
Katherine S. - Exactly! Heaven is a celestial North Korea, where everyone must worship the "beloved leader," or else...
At least, in North Korea, you can fucking die and get escape.
Not in heaven. You're there for *eternity.*
- Christopher Hitchens
Thankfully, as Shelley says in her awesome song, it's all bullshit.
Obviously made up by primitive people, to manipulate other primitive people.
What a weird ride I've been on, From Catholic to agnostic, to atheo-pagan, to finally realizing I was always just a down to earth Atheist. This song is so beautiful, I wish I could have found it sooner!
I love this song. You have an amazing voice and lyrical talent
Such an underrated artist
Good to see you've been adopted for the opening music to TheAtheistExperience webcast, Shelley.
Great song and eloquent argument.
+Socks With Sandals Thanks a lot socks :D
+Shelley Segal your voice is beautiful and The Atheist Experience brought me here and the lyrics are perfect !! A great hug from Puerto Rico !

Thank you Helado
So am I hearing that if atheists ran the world there would be no law? Because surely you wouldn’t want to tell anyone how to live their lives....it’s their life after all they only get one xddd
I need to play this for my friend who told me today that the Earth is 4000 years old and dinosaurs were on Noah's ark!
How did it go XD?
Did it get through? ;)
People like that RARELY listen to common sense.
She's even more beautiful than I imagined.
:D
Such an insanely good song, top talent this girl
Such a beautiful song almost brought tears to my eyes
THanks Fireblade :D
It did bring tears to mine.
i'll admit to tearing up a bit, the greatest music doesn't just sound awesome, it moves you! ^^
I get plenty of chances to make up for it and they more than understand :D
It does help to not see Shelley sing it :p That naughty radiant sun really makes it hurt more how people are (often voluntarily and often forcefully) held back by dogma to not be that shiny bright star that Shelley is.
Everytime the atheist experience starts I almost cry from this song. Amazing
I have been a fan of the Atheist Experience for a decade or more. This song is a BANGER! THANK YOU for this anthem!
I bought this album- totally worth it! I cry on apocolyptic love song every time!
How did it take me so long to find this song?!?!?!!
You made it!!! Hehe

Listening in 2023! Still great!
This has become the song that confirms the excitement I feel when The Atheist Experience is about to start.
Still sharing this with people I meet. Shelley, your words in your songs are truly welcomed and loved, literally music to my ears.
Jeremy Stuteville THanks Jeremy :)
So glad that it resonates with you. I appreciate the sharing!
i used to be a catholic and I can honestly say that debating youtubers and watching episodes and clips from the atheist experience deconverted me. I am now a proud atheist and happy to be free from the madness of religion. Most evil throughout history have been in the name of god. Thank you to all the hosts, producers, etc that made this show possible. It's great listening to this show.
BEST SONG EVER!!
Thank you
@@ShelleySegal Not a problem. Where and when are you performing next cause I'd like to catch it.

WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO FIND THIS SONG?! I love this so much
Everything about this song is 100 percent!!! Thank you Shelly
This is the global atheist theme tune.
Shelley is wonderful, an amazing inspiration. I wish I had half her bravery.

Thanks for your great work and music. I remember watching you play live in London.
+Agatan Fnd Thank you Agatan :)
Hopefully see you in London again sometime soon
Cheers Halil!
This song is amazing, it points out the harm that religion does. It has so much meaning to me, when I first figured out religion and god was Bulls shit, I felt alone and by myself, but songs like this make me feel like I'm not by my self, I wish there were more songs just like this one. Hands down the best athiest song I've ever heard👏👏👏 thank you shelley segal for expressing your amazing voice.
Thanks so much RSM :D
That means so much to me
Shelley put out a whole album with songs like this one.
Love all the songs off it, her other stuff is great too.
:)
Plenty of other artists out that have also put good music that questions religion.
Frightened Rabbit - Head Rolls Off & Holly
First Aid Kit - Hard Believer & Lions Roar
XTC - Dear God
Aiden - Hysteria
Cosmo Jarvus - Love This & Sure As Hell Not Jesus
Bright Eyes - Four Winds
Stevie Wonder - Superstition
Just to name a few.
No belief in love, morality, and God leads to death, despair and hopelessness. Christianity will rule over the Earth until the time of the antichrist, then Jesus will rule over the Earth for 1,000 years with an Iron Sceptor. Every tongue will confess and every knee will bow.

This song is absolutely beautiful. The content is meaningful, and that little extra spice of anger in it contrasts with the smoothness of your voice and the easy listening attitude of the music. Very well done.
Thank you Simone, I appreciate it :D
Thank you for this beautiful song, Shelley. I love you for it!

Very Glad the song resonates with you
Thank you Johnny ❤️
@@ShelleySegal Hi Shelley, I'm sure you deserve much better than my limited vocabulary was able to provide. (I now realise I spelled your name wrong in my previous message. Apologies for that.) I came across your song randomly as I was driving here in Brussels last night. It was 3 am, dumbstruck, I had to stop the car, go back, find the song, so that I could listen to it over and over again. And I could not bring myself to start driving again, which would divert my focus. So thank you once again for this experience, and may freedom & love prevail.
This is a banger
I look forward to hearing this song on Sundays when I tune into to watch The Atheist Experience. I catch myself singing along and starting to feel freedom. I'm just beginning and this song makes me feel carefree and capable.
Thanks Bowie! Wishing you all the best on your journey ❤️ happy to have you singing along 🥰
As a regular listener of the Atheist Experience, I have to say there could not be a better song for it. Your voice, the lyrics, the way it resonates so clearly. I hate to say it, but just sitting here, listening to your song in its entirety is almost like a religious experience. I know that's just our natural response, as a social species.
I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you for sharing this with us, your fellow human beings. Much love.
No; a better song for 'The A-the-ass Excretions' would be '|_oser' by Beck. And, 'What What (in the "But")' by Sam-well. 😏
@@johnharrison6745 , thanks. But, you try to should save some of that Christ-like infinite compassion for later.
@@sirjazzaroth "Sorry"; no compassion for loudmouthed, blaspheming god-haters who think that they're *WAY* "bigger" than they actually are, and, who could use a nice, smooth river-rock buried right between their eyes. 😉
This is one of the best songs on UA-cam for a bunch of reasons. It always reminds me of The atheist experience. Love the episode where Shelly and Matt do it live in the beginning of the episode. But the most amazing thing about this song is when she does it live it sounds exactly like the original version which is absolutely incredible. And we know someone isn't a great singer unless they can sing live, and she might be one of the best live singers I've ever heard! Seriously
THanks Scott for your lovely comment!! I really appreciate it :D Hope to catch you at a live show one day :D
Greatest song of all time. 😍
It took some time but now I can proudly say that I am an Atheist.
