Petrol bombs thrown in Belfast as Northern Ireland violence continues - BBC News

- Police have been attacked and petrol bombs thrown in Belfast, after more than a week of disturbances across Northern Ireland.
More than 50 police officers have been hurt so far in the disorder during the past week. On Wednesday, the violence was concentrated at an interface between loyalist and nationalist areas in west Belfast.
The violence has been linked to a number of causes including the impact of Brexit, a spate of recent arrests of loyalist paramilitary members and a lack of prosecutions following the flouting of Covid rules at the funeral of a senior republican, that was attended by Sinn Féin politicians.

I love the way that the BBC conveniently left out the reason for these riots in the first place. They started when Unionists got pissy because of a Republican funeral. They're framing it as if it's "both sides" who started the violence when in actuality, it's the Unionists who started throwing petrol bombs.
The inevitable result of INSANE TORY BREXIT
I believe the unionists started throwing petrol bombs because of the funeral, but it doesn't make it right to throw petrol bombs anyway. Both sides are at fault.
It had nothing to do with a funeral. UVF/UDA drug shipments were being siezed at the Irish Sea border checks. They kicked off and got the police to let the drugs come back in again.

"The british are feeling a sense of concern"

@CastAirLead nonsense. Britain’s colonisation of Ireland is what caused the creation of this divide in the first place. Queen Elizabeth I sending Protestant settlers to Ulster in the 16th century to displace catholic farmers from their land started this crap. Ever since, English interference over the centuries has stoked these fires. Many, many people warned Boris et al that Brexit was likely to cause a resurgence of violence in NI. They were warned about this before the 2016 vote, and multiple times since. They ignored or belittled all these warnings. Now ‘Project Fear’ has become reality.
the conflict in NI goes back a bit further than the 60s o.O

I agree 💯, ever since the British government started occupying Ireland way back. But I think the Troubles really started with the Irish Potato Famine in the 19th Century.
The fallout from the total lack of support from the British still causes anger and outrage today. Which to be fair, is justifiable when you consider how many people suffered and starved.
What do you expect from a British bullshit news organization?

@@cinnamondonkey2397 I guess the Irish Sea border and the trade barriers that have gone up between NI and Britain (which this is mostly about) that weren’t there until the UK left the EU have nothing at all to do with leaving the EU. Nope, surely not. Say it’s not so.
I actually live in Northern Ireland and I’m telling you now - it’s because of brexit, specifically the Irish Sea border between Northern Ireland and the UK but Sinn Fein members going to an IRA funeral kicked it off.

So, first UK invaded Ireland, conquered it, then, when Ireland decided to be independent tried to stop this from happening with violence, now they have part of Ireland occupied (northern 6) and they are surprised about violence?
C'mon, it is time to let it go and make Ireland united.
The fact that you need a news programme to give you background about a supposed part of the UK says it all.
We in Ireland raised concerns about the possibility of violence from even before the Brexit referendum and this went ignored. The British government clearly does not care for the region or Ireland as a whole, as demonstrated by the constant promise-breaking and back and forth between London and Ireland (both north and south).
We do not want a return to violence here, the UK government needs to pull its head out of its arse and demand that unionism gets its mobs under control.
Lots of excuses for violence in here and it's sad to see. I sure as shit don't want Brexit, yet I'm not throwing petrol bombs like a fuckin child.
