The BBC is just a shadow of itself. It is being turned into a Tory party organ that will not report negative news from Britain if it disrupts the success of the Tories and Brexit. Similar to how almost all tabloids only report positively about Great Britain and blame the EU and others for everything that is negative. The British media landscape is almost similar to the media in the former Eastern Bloc countries.

Just a clarification: the likes of the UDA and UVF are typically referred to as _loyalists_ not _unionists._ The former term is reserved for the more working-class "physical force" tradition within unionism, and so that more middle-class unionists can distance themselves from loyalists. A similar contrast exists between republicans and nationalists, but there's less of a class division there.

Northern Ireland is split between two political parties, Sinn Fein (who wishes to unify the island of Ireland) and the DUP (who wants to keep Northern Ireland in the UK).
Brexit has caused a lot of unrest in Northern Ireland amongst both Unionists and Nationalists. Unionists feel betrayed by Westminster because goods entering Northern Ireland from the Republic have to be checked now and Nationalists are annoyed that Brexit even happened.
The riots in Belfast are largely being started by young Unionists who are being egged on by older ones who aren’t even going to the riots and there’s a worrying possibility things in Northern Ireland could worsen as things move forward since Brexit violates the Good Friday Agreement

Because basically, we see it as a completely alien society. Catholics and protestants living in segregated communities just doesn't have any connection with our life experience.

Here in Italy we used to have a comparable issue with the region of South Tyrol: despite being geographically in Italy, it used to be part of Austria and inhabited by Austrians. However, after it was annexed to Italy at the end of WWI, many Italians settled there, especially in bigger cities. Fascism tried to "italianize" all the population by force and, after the end of WWII, ethnic conflicts between German-speaking and Italian-speaking people (backed by the Italian government) started to escalate, with terrorist attacks to police and civilians and the creation of para-military groups.
How was all this solved? The Italian government gave special autonomy to the region, where nowdays everything is bi-lingual and each group must be proportionally represented in public offices. But the real solution was the EU and the Schengen agreement, that has made being Italian or Austrian citizens only a theoretical fact, as everyone has been able for years now to work and move freely across the border. The region used its money and resources wisely and has become the richest and best organized of the whole Italy.
People shouldn't underestimate that opening borders inside Europe isn't just for the sake of economic growth or even to "let some countries exploit others and steal their money", as some say. It's probably the only solution to make ethnic conflicts meaningless and to live in peace. Nationalist politicians can easily blame others for every issue, but if they win, if their values become mainstream again, we can only end up hurting each other as we've done for centuries.

Northern Ireland has autonomy, both sides are represented in the government, there is free movement of people between the UK and Ireland (even post-Brexit), and there used to be free movement of goods between Ireland and all parts of the UK. However this youth violence I'd say is mostly due to disenfranchisement, the riots have mostly been occurring in poor loyalists areas where youth have little job opportunities or education. I also think frustrations from lockdown are playing a part with many seeing it as a bit of fun, and something to do. I am also of the opinion that the crackdown on Paramilitary gangs drug dealing plays a bigger part than people are letting on, I beleive this was the main cause of starting it, but now it's spiralled out of control and represents a wider grievance against the system in general.
However now, it's been made a political issue and there's no going back from that.
but anyway I'm getting of point, in general I'd say religion plays no part. People aren't fighting over theological issues, but identify issues and politics. Religion is just used as an identifier for the two traditions.

The lack of “want” of an education is a growing problem in working class areas, with increasing glamorisation of drug dealing part of every day life. I’m from a working class area myself and see this first hand.
Take poorly educated youths, with a decreasing chance of success, and combine it with the religiously drilled in patriotic opinion of paramilitaries who are now heavily involved in drug dealing, and you get the ultimate recipe for disaster. It’s a serious serious issue for youth growing up.
Unfortunately with the way society works, and capitalism it is unlikely to change anytime soon. The only way for it to end for an individual growing up in these circumstances is to “break the chain” and push for a better life for himself/herself.
I have heard people comment that the violence is stemming from “selective policing” which only makes me believe more that there is a serious crackdown on drug dealing in these areas, and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear the paramilitaries endorsing the violence or even encouraging it to the youth.

Because Northern Ireland is a much smaller country, we tend to literally just name the area we come from, even though that area might only be 200 houses in size. Ulster Unionism has always been on the wrong side of history.
They accept Democracy when it suits them and threaten violence if the outcome of that democratic result doesn't go their way.
When the majority on the island of Ireland vowed for home rule, the Ulster-Unionists resisted an Irish parliament to be run by the Irish; even though Ireland was still in the UK.
The Ulster-Unionists bit off more then they could chew and a good chunk of Ireland (26 counties) left the kingdom because the Irish who also identified themselves as British in the North of Ireland wouldn't meet the Irish Republicans half way.
Partition happened because the UVF (A militant group that calls themselves the “Ulster Volunteer Force”) threatened a civil war within the UK.
The reason why they were threatening violence was because in 1918, Ireland had a national vote called “the Irish general election”. The majority of the Irish people voted for independence.
The minority in the North of Ireland who voted to remain in the UK got their wish.
The Irish people got cheated out of their Democracy and the island was partitioned.
The 26 Counties became what was known as the “irish free state” (later to be called the “Republic of Ireland” in 1949) and the North of Ireland had to rejoin the UK as a new entity known as “Northern Ireland” in 1922.
The founding fathers of Ireland (the first and original IRA) had no choice but to accept the 26 county Irish free state treaty.
Either they accepted it or the British empire would've blown Ireland off the map.
British Gunship Diplomacy from their empire forced Ireland to surrender.
Fast forward to today and you're seeing a repeat of history going in reverse.
In 2016 the UK had a national vote on the UK leaving the EU: i.e *Brexit*
The majority of the British people voted for independence
The minority in Northern Ireland who voted to remain in the EU got their wish.
The British people got cheated out of their Democracy and the Union has become partitioned.
The British government voted for the sea border because they had no choice.
Either accept the sea border (known as the Irish protocol) or risk diplomatic action from both the EU and USA.
Ireland has the backing from an Irish lobby in Congress (from both the Democrats and Republican parties) and an Irish-American president.
That's without 26 countries in the EU that's also backing up Ireland as well.
The UK had no choice but to surrender Northern Ireland to the EU.
It's also worth mentioning that the DUP voted for this protocol that has the UK partitioned.
Their shifting the blame, deflecting responsibility and meeting up with sectarian loyalist paramilitaries is stocking up all this tension. They're an absolute cancer to Northern Ireland.

"The British government voted for the sea border because they had no choice"
Not strictly true, they had the choice of whether to leave the CU and the SM, they knew the damage it would cause in Ireland when they decided to leave those groups but they decided that they wanted their "pure" brexit more than they wanted peace in Ireland.

The real right/wrong side of history division in Northern Ireland is not between unionists and nationalists - it's between those who support peace above all, and those who tolerate violence as long as it's in their cause.
The legendary John Hume was an SDLP member, he wanted a united Ireland. He never got that in his lifetime but he got something even more valuable - the Good Friday Agreement. He was right to prefer a peaceful NI in Britain rather than a violent on in a united Ireland.

@@samuelcampbell249 Speaking up is one thing, the problem is when people choose to say stupid, harmful bullshit.
Violence is literally the worst option for unionist, loyalists, and the like. It would paint them as the aggressors in a way that was obfuscated during the last fight, because stalwart nationalists and the ilk know they can achieve a united Ireland by demographic means as long as they're patient - violence is no longer the optimal path, the UK government gave them a viable alternative in 98.
So the tit-for-tat that paints all sides as belligerent - that unionists would be counting on with a return to violence - may not occur enough to cultivate the sectarian zero-sum thinking of decades past.
Additionally, the paramilitary unionists are unlikely to have enough manpower and material to keep up an armed campaign for the duration of time required to secure some bargaining power - the entire point of such an exercise.
Even if things DO descend back into the tit-for-tat ways, Unionists are likely to be biting off more than they can chew - population change and institutional reforms are among the reasons why militant unionist types would find a much more difficult environment to wage such a campaign and pulling out of the agreement which afforded you SOME form of assured protection as a cultural group so you can engage in a Quixotic military campaign that can't achieve any real military or political goals, while also in the process alienating not only the REST of the population of your polity but also likely alienating the very government at the helm of the nation with which you desire stronger ties in the first place - is an incredibly self-destructive move to advocate so vociferously.
I sincerely hope the gameplan isn't causing a ruckus and then counting on the powers that be to send the military in to keep order, thus facilitating a de facto state of occupation, and in effect 'more integration with the United Kingdom proper' - because counting on the government of the United Kingdom to act in their best interest is a mistake that loyalists and unionists of all stripes really should've learned to stop making by now.

This was done to appease the EU and Irish Republicans. The UK doesn’t want a border on the island of Ireland or the Irish Sea. Because this would upset Republics and Irish citizens. There doesn’t need to be a border ANYWHERE in our isles. All of these checks could be done in the English Channel. The EU doesn’t want that because then there would be peace in Northern Ireland and Brexit would be a success. The EU doesn’t want Brexit to be a success because Denmark, Italy and the Netherlands are all watching to see how Brexit goes so they can also leave. The EU is shitting itself so it’s trying to create trouble to distract its citizens from itself. The UK should be pilling money into every separatist organisation and party in the EU to bring the whole thing down. The EU can’t fight al of its members are once.

    • @catsandcrafts171
      @catsandcrafts171 3 роки тому +8

Not sure it's a bias when it's always been a really clear possible (and likely) outcome. I have the same bias, because (probably like you) I've watched progress on our Brexit screw-up from before the referendum and back then, the NI borders were the elephant in the room that none of the politicians wanted to acknowledge. :(

    • @QemeH
      @QemeH 3 роки тому +6

@@catsandcrafts171 I second that from the outside. Every UK negotiating team did their hardest to not adress "the NI problem", even though most of the EU constantly reminded them that it needed to be solved. And even when it was put into contrect form in the end, it's still a wishy-waschy wibbly-wobbly temporary "solution" that doesn't solve anything. And that is because there are three things the UK wants:
*(1) No borders inside the UK*
*(2) No borders inside the island of Ireland* (this is the Good Friday Agreement)
*(3) UK exits the EU while Ireland stays*
*You can only choose two. GO!*

@@QemeH To be fair, I suspect that the UK would actually like Ireland to join them and take the genius move of leaving the EU, but those Irish are too willing to give up their sovereignty and bow to an unelected master in the EU (that the Irish directly or indirectly helped elect), and not nearly economically astute enough to leave (if Britain can benefit from being a dynamic island without EU restrictions, think of what Ireland could do).
The truth is that the UK does its best to not think about Ireland or Northern Ireland. They never understood the problems, the implications of the GFA and never intended to honour their agreements to it and the people of Northern Ireland. As bad as the Irish government were about Northern Ireland, at least it occupied their minds somewhat.

      @QemeH 3 роки тому +3

@@nastysimon Probably the UK would like Ireland to leave the EU, if only to solve the GFA problem without having to do anything themselves, yeah. But that's not for the UK to decide. They have the three "wants" I detailed and can choose two of them...
