The Chico-o-stick is basically the inside of a butterfinger. So good
The toasted coconut adds a nice touch, though.
They are so good but I can never remember the name
They're not easy to find, at least not on the cheap in my area anymore. Amazon sells all of them. Atkinson Candy Company make chick-o-sticks but never seem to have the big ones in stock or they're expensive.
Or a (whole) miniature Zagnut...
@@jrco666 It's weird I can never find them at grocery stores but I'll go to a random gas station and they have a box of the full size
Chico Sticks and the crunchy peanut butter bars were my favorites! Bit o'honey needs sampled in a future episode
They should try Bit O Honey! One of my favorites!
Oh yeah, that's a good one!
Along with "Squirrel Nut Zippers" and "Mint Juleps"
Was gonna say this. A Bit-O-Honey is a Mary Jane with honey and almond instead of molasses and peanut.
Love Bit O Honey!
@@MistahJigglah I’ve never heard of those! They sound delicious
I LOL'd at the sound of the bag of Circus Peanuts hitting the table. They're supposed to be soft and almost marshmallow-like, but it's like hitting the jackpot if you actually get a bag of soft ones! 😆
I know right!? When I saw Circus Peanut on the screen I immediately asked "but are they soft?"
The soft ones are SO much better in texture, flavor, dissolvability, and when they're fresh enough they even taste warm.
@@Pip8448the fresh ones are amazing!
That is an _amazingly_ positive review of circus peanuts! Many Americans would gripe for days. 😆
So true! Those were one of my mom's favorite candies.
I've always thought they ranked up there as one of the worst candies available.
@@Zinnian
You thought right! I just had a discussion about those “circus peanuts” being the least liked candy on Halloween. We never ate anything unwrapped because of the wild “poison/razor blade conspiracy” so those “circus peanuts” would only be used as projectiles. Everyone tries one... but only once and usually just one bite...
DIS GUS TING!
My mom would never allow them around the house because she had a friend whose cornea was scratched by one in a freak accident and it dredged up unpleasant memories for her... not that I was complaining much considering how they taste.
I brought some to Spain for a friend in a goodie bag as a gag gift and her mom are all of them in an hour and I was flabbergasted 😂
I’m 44 years old and The Mary Jane’s and Chick o Sticks were nickel candies in my neighborhood stores in the 80’s . I had no idea how old they were even back then
I'm only 28 and I grew up on chick o sticks. They are the bomb but they really do stick to your teeth.
Someone forgot the "Boston Baked Beans" "Charleston Chews" and the "Maple Nut goodies" but each one of the other candies you ate were ones that my parents bought for my siblings and I. These were regular staples around Christmas, Easter and Halloween.
They've had Boston Baked Beans and Charleston Chews in other episodes.
Butterscotch candy, too.
And orange and black wrapped peanut butter taffy bites
I remember my grandmother used to get these candy squares in the bulk candy section and they were black licorice layered with one layer of like an orange cream fondant and another layer of the licorice and then a layer of coconut cream and then the last layer of licorice. They were little squares and they were also assorted because there were ones with a licorice, lemon cream and coconut cream, also licorice strawberry cream and coconut cream. I was very young but I remember them fondly.
Necco Wafers would have been a good one.
The only thing missing from my grandparents' candy dish were the red and white peppermints and the sugar coated orange gummies that looked like little orange segments. That and licorice. I just remembered they also always had the butterscotch hard candies on hand. Good times! ☺️
i love butterscotch
It's strange how Irish peeps think root beer tastes like medicine. Pour a bottle of A&W in a frosty glass mug and add a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream. Heavenly!
I believe its because in alot of Europe, medicines and toothpaste are often flavored with wintergreen, whereas in the states mint is often used. And since wintergreen is a noticeable ingredient in root beer, they tend to make that connection where we dont
I agree with you. Nothing compares to a nice, frosty mug of A&W Root Beer with a scoop or two of Vanilla ice cream on top! Absolute dynamite!
A few shots of Crown Royal is even better
In Australia, if you order a Root Beer down there, you're more likely to get some funny looks your way. Reason being, that the term "Root" in Root Beer is a euphemism for sex.
Root beer was originally created as medicine, after all: it was an extract of a wide variety of North American plant materials seen as having a tonic or medicinal value -- sassafras bark, sarsaparilla root, wintergreen, a few others -- that was fermented, with the alcohol serving as both an antiseptic and a preservative.
As an American, I love those candies! It's always interesting to see other people say that rootbeer tastes like medicine, because most Americans don't get that taste.
That's because Americans have a different base ingredient for medicine than most of the world.
Root Beer totally tastes like medicine! Medicine that's been added to a sugar syrup. It's what's so alluring about it. Especially the Dad's Root Beer Barrels, they tingle like black liquorish without the super bitterness.
I think we Associate the "Medicine taste" to the various crappy fruit flavors that children's medicine have to make the medicines tolerable in taste to children without adding sugar. Think of cherry cough syrup or Flintstone's multi-vitamins.
Good memories of when penny candies really were a penny. Yes, I'm old.
Me too! :) I was born in the 1950s and this was standard candy when I was young.
You can still get penny candies from 'Tremblay's in Hayward Wisconsin, for a penny.
Me too!
I was alive for penny tootsie rolls, but that's it.
I hear ya. We would walk to the store and collect bottles on the way. Always had enough money for a coke, candy bar, and a bag of penny candy.
Those peanut butter bars they tried first are my very favorite candy!
Did Darren really just call "The 80s" Old Timey?? How dare you!!
I remember those exact words from young adults 30 years ago talking about stuff from the 1960's. Just made myself feel old~ ouch.
Having spent my teen years in the 80's, I don't feel old, but I keep seeing signs that I'm old. I still feel young, and the 80's was the best decade ever.
I'm 44 and grew up in the 80s &90s. It's crazy to hear kids or even people in their 20s talk about those times being so long ago. Stab in the heart. Haha
@@DanieGirl78 perspective. Their hair is still wet from the womb.
@@gdhaney136 The 70s was!
I haven't seen circus peanuts in ages. My grandfather used to buy them for me when I was a little girl, back in the 70's. We'd stop at the bait and tackle store, he'd buy me circus peanuts, and an orange crush soda, then we would go out fishing at this little fishing pond nearby. Watching you guys taste them took me back there... Good times!
what a sweet memory!
My Dad was born in the 1950 and his favorite candy was something called lemon drops. Never been able to find them?
@@kittye8340you can either buy them in British themed shops or online candy stores.
I've seen them at Walmart.
@@thewolfdoctor761 I found them not long after this video at a mini mart.. They aren't what I remember. It's so strange to me, that I don't like them anymore. As a kid, I was never into chocolate candies, so I would always go for the weird candy other kids were too cool to eat..
I grew up on these candies here in the Appalachian mountains. And yes, we also have chicken flavored crackers, which are quite different but also delicious. We also have a lot of different types of really well crafted root beers and beer and microbrewery goodness, but we also have sassafras and sarsaparilla. Good stuff! Add all of that to some fantastic good Southern cooking, and what a treat! The fun thing is that we can still get all of these today at the local Corner Market and then some from back in the day that still exist. I enjoyed watching the video! Take care!
Let me tell you, here in Chile sarsaparilla was very popular in the 50s 60s, I even had it on my face as a teenager in the 70s., as a cure for acne
Chicken in a biskit! So salty. So good.
@@JT-hr6dq yes!! 😃
Are you talking about Chicken In A Biskit crackers?
I'm from New Jersey and my dad and I would make sassafras tea back in the late '60s-early '70s. Man, I miss that flavor. I also used to hike the Appalachian trail in boy scouts and sometimes we'd find wild teaberries up in the mountains there. I remember being absolutely delighted that they tasted EXACTLY like teaberry gum. Good times! I'm 1/8 Native American (Leni Lenape) and had relatives who lived in the Appalachian mountains. I loved it up there.
"Cowtails" were a childhood treat(I'm 38 going on 39😜)
I do remember the Sugar Daddy caramel candy on a stick lol..
It's very chewing I remember and it's still around far as I know..
I remember my mom's friend had a giant one, he was very gay so he always made the joke that he wanted a footlong sugar daddy so he bought one 🤣
I love Sugar Daddy candies lol
I prefer Sugar Babies always found them easier to eat than Sugar Daddies but boy do they get stuck in your teeth lol.
Black cows were better cuz the chocolate
I remember losing a filling to Sugar Daddy.
I was born in 1994 and have had every single one of these. I never really thought of them as old time candies. Except circuits peanuts. I just felt deep down, they came before electricity and the wheel.
I mean, Chick-O-Sticks are still easily found in most convenience stores/grocery stores. It's usually the larger ones, but you can get them. I always pick one up on a road trip. It's just one of those snacks that feels right for a car ride.
You have to remember that 1900 was 123 years ago. About half the lifetime of your country.
@@rkstevenson5448 never seen it..iam 37
@@rkstevenson5448 I gotta say I typically never see them, either. Outside of like- Cracker Barrel, a restaurant that markets themselves towards the ‘old southern vibe’.
You say it was on road trips- you sure you don’t mean that you find them in novelty shops? Most of these candies aren’t sold by major franchises around here.
When I was VERY young, we would sometimes get these candies (and hear the 'not seen that in a few years' from the adults). it's lovely to see them here!
My dad used to love these weird, old fashioned candies called "horehounds", which were apparently popular when he was a kid. The only place he could ever find them was a candy shop inside this little Old West style theme park near our house. My sister and I thought they were absolutely vile, which of course meant dad didn't have to worry about us stealing them. One bag would last him for ages.
I remember those. I think they were a cough drop variety.
That wasn’t Knott’s Berry Farm in California, was it? We bought some horehound candy there once and thought the taste would actually kill us. Horrendous! 🤮
@@hathi444 No, it was a place in Colorado called Heritage Square.
My grandfather loved those. I had a few, but was not a big fan.
I sang in choirs for 12 years. We used these as lozenges for a sore or tired throat. They work well but taste interesting!
I need to send y'all some of the rural stuff. Horehound and sassafras hard candies made from boiling down herbal teas; lavender "mints"; butterscotches and fruit candies, clove chewing gum.
Yeah, have them taste the "actual" medicine stuff. And toss in a bag of the old sour lemon candies as well.
Can confirm. There were indeed the candies my grandparents always had on hand. There was also a quaint little general store style mom n pop shop on the corner form the street from their house that always stocked these and the best part was the old couple who ran it kept the prices from when they were young. You could have any of these candies among other old timey treats for anywhere from a penny to a nickel a piece. Thanks for the nostalgic trip down memory lane! 😊
I LOVED those root beer barrels as a kid.
Me too, I still get them when I can. That and butterscotch disks. I also love the root beer Dum-Dum suckers
@@ginnyweatherbee7941 Absolutely! This brings back many childhood memories of the early 1960s. My grandmother always had a candy dish on a table in the living room and kept it stocked with those root beer barrels and butterscotch disks. My grandfather was a fiend for those and she was always hounding him to stay out of the candy! LOL
Me too!!
Oh, me too!
I love Chick-o-stick! There used to be a bar form of it about 6 inch long that I would buy after school.
"Artificial banana flavor" is what bananas actually tasted like prior to the near eradication by disease of the strain the flavor was modeled after and the banana farmers switched to the current strains.
I recently learned this thanks to Johnny Harris!
Yep, it's the flavor of Gros Michel bananas. Since the 1950s, all we get are Cavendish bananas.
I'm glad that disease took that strain of banana.
Or else it’s just because isoamyl acetate is really cheap and makes your brain go Banana! Occam’s razor.
Actually this is a myth, there is no tangible evidence that it was based off the Gros Michel banana at all even if the taste of artificial banana would have been closer to this banana than the Cavendish banana. Artificial banana flavoring was actually created by isolating compounds in the banana. The Gros Michel banana is NOT even extinct, so anybody believing this myth has simply bought into an old wives tale. The reason why Cavendish bananas taste different is because they have less volatile compounds in them which the breakdown of these compounds in the Cavendish banana lead to a more muted less "artificial' tasting banana. The real reason artificial banana flavoring tastes why it does is not about the type of banana it was based off of, but rather practical reasons. Isoamyl acetate, the primary flavor component used to create artificial banana flavoring is simply extremely cheap to produce, that's all.
Does anybody remember Hoffman's Cup O' Gold candy? A filled cup with marshmallow inside, with crisply, probably rice, puffs in the chocolate (I looked it up, the crunch was from minced almonds and coconut in the chocolate) but the flavor of the chocolate was very different and fantastic.
I loved those.
Being a Chick-O-Stick aficionado since 1960 something, I have to say, the little ones in the bag blow. The full size ones are the shizziola! The little ones are not the same at all.
Totally agree, the little ones can also have a coating on them that changes the flavor profile and texture. The big ones are seriously way better.
100% full sized blow the little ones away on texture and taste.
You tell 'em, Pops! Fo shizzle.😁
Agreed, same with the shape changed Mary Janes!
I agree with you. Love them with a big red
Fun fact! The artificial rootbeer flavor is from the chemical methyl salicylate which is also the chemical that creates the odor of wintergreen mint, hence why Seán describes it as "minty". Science!
Wow! Thank you for sharing.
Back in the '50s, Mary Jane's were a common Halloween candy. As were the root beer barrels. Most kids didn't like either. I was strange, loved both. If you handed out those vile peanuts, you would wake to heavily soaped windows (and you deserved such)...
My granny and mom were expert at making old fashioned candies. Miss their creations...
Where I grew up root beer barrels were one of the candies that kids fought over. Mary Janes were fairly well-liked, though not as much as Bit-O-Honeys and certainly less than Squirrel Candies, which were the acme.
I never saw anyone eat a second Circus Peanut though.
I saw plenty of kids eat second Necco Wafers, and third ones, and fourth and fifth and so on - and every time wish they hadn't. It's like we were addicted to the disappointment.
Those peanut shaped candies were definitely at the bottom of the Halloween candy pyramid. And I also loved root beer barrels and miss them! They used to be in my company’s receptionist’s candy bowl until they were swapped out for the stereotypical red and white mints.
@@kathyastrom1315 Agree. Circus peanuts and Mary Jane's are awful. My favorite candy as a kid was Nestle Crunch. I loved getting those in my Halloween bag.
I’m surprised they didn’t have squirrel nuts
This thread is making me feel old enough to remember Trick Or Treat for UNICEF.
The candy we got from our grandparents. They're all good. I still grab them if I spot them once in a while. Werther's original caramel hard candies, the hard strawberry candy wrapped to actually look like strawberries, Ribbon candy at Christmas and sugar coated gumdrops were often found at the grandparents houses too. Oh and of course butterscotch discs.
I think root beer is a lot like coffee, in that if someone doesn’t like it, you introduce it to them in small amounts and have them focus on the aspects they like instead of the negative memories connected to any one flavor. I always prefer a root beer that’s heavy with the vanilla aspect, such as Boylan’s, but there are plenty that are super complex that I find it hard to imagine someone focusing on one “bad” flavor.
And now that I know that Ciara hasn’t ever had root beer and seems to enjoy the flavor of these barrels, I feel compelled to send her some bottles of root beer of various companies for her to try.
Sprecher's got to be one of them. Their root beer and cream sodas are excellent.
@@reidmason2551 never heard of them. Are they local? I love root beer, with a preference for the vanilla or nutmeg spiced kind
@@nickthompson2023 , like cream soda?

I really like the peanut butter bars & the chicosticks, glad they all liked them too.
Chick-o-sticks are my favorite my mom introduced me to them as a kid and I can't get enough lol.
lol - same. Thanks Mom!
Same. She used to have to hide them on my brothers and I lol. As an adult I've bought them off Amazon a couple times.
The Chik-O-Stik is my personal favorite!! Most of these are from my childhood, and I love that you enjoyed some of them!!
To get the full experience of a Chick 0 Stick, you need the actual stick variety. Used to eat those all the time as a kid. This was back in the early 90's, if I may add. They were delicious.
Yeah, I loved the actual sticks since those were the ones I used to buy as a kid but I also loved the first one the peanut butter bars...lok
What a lovely walk through the years! The circus peanuts were one of my mom's favorite candies!. Many of these candies were treats for her and her siblings when they were kids during the Great Depression. All of these (and loads more) were available through the penny candy store when I was a kid back in the 1960s. Yes, the candies were a penny. The couple who ran the store would always make sure that each of us who ventured in after school would have 1 piece, so one would no go wanting. I still remember the wonder of looking at all the candy and being at a loss of which to choose. Really, a very sweet video. But on a different note, what in the world is with the Irish and root beer? That is the 1 food where I really think there is a profound difference in taste buds. Root beer is widely available here--esp with the microbrewery craze--so many varied, but yummy creamy flavors.
Helpful tip: microwave circus peanuts for 5-10 seconds if they're stale when you open the package. The difference is unbelievable.
Helpful tip: do the opposite and freeze them. Crunchy chewy bananay goodness.
Helpful tip: Open the bag upside down and then put whole thing the trash. The difference is unbelievable.
I actually like them kinda chewy and stale better.
It's weird how it seems like all overseas medicine/mouthwash tastes like licorice. Here, most of our medicine and mouthwash flavors are some kind of mint.
mouthwash, yeah; definitely never had medicine that tasted like mint, though.
US medicine tends towards cherry or grape flavored. I still can't stand the taste of artificial grape flavor because it tastes like medicine to me.
or cherry🍒
The nasty grape or cherry flavors are to hide that actual taste of the medicine, but not be tasty enough to make the kids want to chug the bottle when mom isn't looking.
I still love the peanut butter bars and Chick-o-stick candy. My Mama always loved the Root Beer Barrels and the Circus Peanuts especially if they were super fresh. They have a better texture if they are fresh! Love your channel and all of the Tryers: both the Veterans and the new people are really entertaining
I love Chick O Sticks. I have a bag of them in my kitchen right now. I'm always thrown by people who hate Root Beer, or think it tastes medicinal. I grew up drinking root beer and I adore it!
Every candy you tried this episode was a part of my childhood. As an adult, chick-o-sticks are still amongst my favorites but I prefer the bigger ones. I wonder if you guys would like Goya Malta it's a drink. Nothing to do with the episode I know but still curious. Growing up none of my friends or girlfriends ever liked it. Full disclosure they always tell me it's nasty. I just thought of a new drink episode for you guys. Irish people try Goya products or specifically Irish people try Goya Malta.
That wound be a good taste test!
Back in the early 60s when we went to my dad's VERY small hometown in N Missouri, we went to the smallish general store. They still had old, creeky wood floors and ancient wood and glass display cases (like western movies depicted in the 1800s) holding candy and toys! All these were displayed in the cases. That town burned down about 50 years but the nostalgia is still fresh!
I grew up with root beer from A&W and love it. But then I'm 66 and we had ice cream floats with the root beer.
Okay but as a kid I LOVED the peanut butter bars when my grandparents took me along when they went to the drugstore to pick up their prescriptions. It was the only place to buy old timey candy and they had them and those terrible circus peanut gummies.
There are so many more old timey candies. You'll have to do a part 2!
if they eat Necco Wafers it'll create an international incident
When I worked at Subway sandwich shop back in the day (90's) near an airport, had a European gentleman come in and saw the "Root Beer" at the soda machine. He inquired as to what it was, told him to just give it a try. He tasted it and replied "Taste like mouthwash, very odd and I do not like it." The crew and I just started laughing and I said, "I could kinda understand that, especially if you have never had it before."
I think these candies are why I don't eat a lot of chocolate. Was raised on these ( in fact have wrappers from Mary J in my car from the bag I bought yesterday lol) . My favorite part of Halloween is grabbing all of these from my sons pail... Side note: in America Circus Peanuts fall into 2 categories
A) I love them! Or B) Get this Styrofoam out of my face! Lol
Man, I love me some Circus Peanuts! But they have to be the original banana flavor. The tutti fruity and other flavors aren't that good.
Growing up in the 60s my mother always bought Circus Peanuts and always smashed them before she ate them. I hated them, especially if she smashed one and then said, "Here, eat this." No thanks! I hated the texture and taste but I especially hated being expected to eat something she had messed up with her bare hands.
Looks like a lovely selection of Dollar Store Candies! They have all the good snacks because the major chains won't sell the stuff because it's small batch and has no name recognition.
Peanut bars were my favorite when I was a child 60 years ago. My grandmother had a small town grocery store & I would snatch candy whenever I could.
These were all my faves as a kid in the 90s-00s, and they seemed very retro then.
First off, are gumball machines uncommon in Ireland?
Second, the Irish are lucky with all that delicious sounding root beer flavored medicine.
And finally, I was hoping for "Squirrel Nut Zippers" and "Mint Juleps" because they're old as hell, and I have some in my candy dish right now.
I'm surprised I didn't see rock candy on here.
I adore Squirrels. Those and Mary Janes are my favorite candies of all the candies.
@@dustinwagner1776 Rock candy is just crystalized sugar, I'd be surprised if it's not something they have over there.

These were the candies to be found at the hardware/craft stores when I was a kid. Probably still there. It's missing Bit-O-Honey, Cow Tails, and candy sticks (I had a really amazing rum butter one once).
I feel ancient now. These candies bring back memories
Yay! Root beer barrels (but you need to try the ones with *reaL* sassafras)... too bad you didn't get the horehound candies too
Speaking of things mediciny, my grandfather used to love these hard candies called horehound drops (don't laugh). He'd offer them to his grandkids, and most of my siblings wanted nothing to do with them after trying them once. But I started really getting into them. They're unusual.
For my cousins and I it was the jar of big round tablet shaped pepto bismol pink peppermints my great-grandmother had. They were only ever eaten out of desperation. xD we would relish the days that there was a box of ribbon candy or a jug of mixed old school hard sweets as an alternative 😂
My Mom liked Chick-O-Stick and would buy them fairly often when I was a kid (back in the 60s and 70s). They're good, but I haven't seen them in stores in decades. Didn't know they were still around.
If you have a five below near you they sell them there
Check the dollar stores, you can sometimes find them.👍
The crunchy peanut butter bars are my favorite! We also have another taffy similar to the Mary Jane called Bit-O-Honey. It is honey flavored instead of peanut butter
Our 'old timey' candy is waaaaaay better than modern day candy. I still buy sugar candy and peanut butter bars to this day.

I'm eating the orange Circus Peanuts as I watch this. I'm one of the few people that I know of that REALLY likes them, and I never thought they tasted like banana. Spanger Candy sells them by the 20 pound box, but I buy from a retailer and get them a LOT cheaper.

Ciara is a lovely and enchanting lady, but offering to baby bird peanut butter treat gave me a shudder. Probably the goal - so well done!
Be prepared to go all the way with this adventuress. Birding is on the menu!

Your medicine flavors must be way different in Ireland than in the U.S. The only times I have ever heard that root beer flavor tastes like medicine is on the TRY channel. :-) Love me an ice-cold root beer or birch beer soda, especially a root beer float with scoops of vanilla ice cream in the glass.
I'd think these Irish kids would be asking why their medicine tastes like our root beer? I'm Texan and I damn sure never got any oral medicine that tasted like root beer...
Then you didn’t have Castoria for childs bowels
Sassafras oil is a bitter agent similar to things like licorice, fennel, anise and other bitters commonly found in cold and cough medications. But the US banned the use of Sassafras oil in the 60s so it's no surprise that modern American root beer (which is also full of sugar) tastes nothing like the real thing of the past
Wintergreen.
The Japanese have that response too, because of the flavors of their children's medicines. We got cherry flavored stuff.
The French also hate root beer because it tastes like their medicine. As an American, I hate the fake cherry flavor and grape flavor in anything.
Those first two (peanut butter bar, Mary Jane, and similar chewy "Squirrel Nut Zippers") were a staple to find in your trick or treat bag when I was young. We loved those first two the most. I also love the "Dads root beer" aka root beer barrels.
The peanut butter bars were my grandmothers FAVORITE! Between those and her making her own taffy...man I miss my Nana!! I love coconut so the Chick o Sticks were my personal favorites, my dad loves the Root Beer Barrels, those and Fireballs. Sweets have come a long way man but classics will always be just that! Great review all! Oh by the way, I drive Uber here in D.C. and met a lass from Dublin last night! Told her I went there when I was in the Navy and mentioned your UA-cam channel and she was an avid watcher as well, we talked about the different cast members and both agreed that Ciara's throat and stomach are made out of an indestructible material!!
The chick-o-stick & Peanutbutter bar are both made in Lufkin, Texas at the Atkinson Candy factory. Stop by when I'm in town and get a few bags!!!
My dad ate all kinds of sticky candy, (Mary Jane, bit o honey, spice drops) no chocolate, and I swear he got his first cavity in his sixties! This after never going to the dentist or taking good care of his teeth. I really think it was because no plaque stuck on his teeth from chewing those.
I can remember when I was 4-8 years old, we would get a little bit of allowance for doing our chores around the house and then on a Saturday morning my dad would take the 4 of us kids on a walk to the small mom and pop store down the street, they had Barrel and bins of what we called "penny candy" you could get like 2 root beer barrels for a penny. All sort of old time candy. We would leave with a little bag stuffed full of assorted candy. Licorice, taffy, chick o sticks, penny suckers all sorts of sweets. Even small packet of caramel corn and tiny crisp pretzels. Such good memories. :) I love the Chick O Sticks.
candy was a lot better back when they were made with real sugar before corn syrup was added to everything
I had all of these in the 80s as a kid. The peanuts were my grandmas FAVORITE. Man this brings back good memories of grand parents
You should have them try a root beer float separate and then together
I just started watching this channel about 4 weeks ago, and there's a minimum of 7 years of videos here, yet I am getting constant repeats of videos I've already watched, on a daily basis
I’m 48 years old and my grand mother, and great grandmother would give many of these to me when I was young. Thank you for the nostalgia.
My mom and grandma still ate these regularly when i was little so i grew up on these. It’s so nostalgic.
“Ree-diculously Sweet!” He says….. um… yeah it’s CANDY dude… 😂
Old fashioned sponge candy was amazing
Can you do a British version? Irish vs British beer, candy, barfood, anything else
I used to have a Sassafras tree in my yard. Smelled soooo good.
My mother loved the circus peanuts. They are a bit controversial these days as you'll find people either love them or hate them. Another favorite of hers that you guys didn't get to try is horehound candy. It's got a strange name for sure. It comes from a plant and is used in medicine and candy and like a lot of those others you kind of have to really search for it in places where elderly people shop to find them. It sort of has a root beer/licorice kind of taste, similar to those root beer barrels you guys had. That said, I love root beer and the root beer barrels but the horehound candy, not so much. I'm guessing none of you would have liked it but then that's the fun of watching you guys seeing how you react to things that aren't as familiar. I will say that a lot of foreign people do think root beer tastes like medicine. I wish we had medicine that tastes like that, I'd be all over it.
I'm eating the orange Circus Peanuts as I watch this. I'm one of the few people that I know of that REALLY likes them, and I never thought they tasted like banana. Spanger Candy sells them by the 20 pound box, but I buy from a retailer and get them a LOT cheaper. LOL😄 Oh, and I'm 68 years old.
Horehound makes a lot of different candy flavours. I think the only one I've actually had though was a cherry candy.
I love Chico sticks, they were my go to snack from the concessions stand at the pool growing up!
I love horehound candy :)
We tried some last year! 😁 ua-cam.com/video/NmK0Igk-Dvs/v-deo.html
My grandma turned me onto circus peanuts and I still love them to this day. Also, there wasn’t a bad candy in this list. These are all 10’s in my book lol. 😅
Root beer and root beer flavored candy is amazing. Especially Barqs brand root beer. My father made the best root beer floats! Also memories of going with my father to get gas for the truck as a kid and running into the gas station for a root beer and a packet of the circus peanuts. The real stiff ones means it's gone a bit stale but the fresh ones are stick your teeth good. "Old" sweets are SO much better than the hfcs, chemical and additive filled stuff masquerading as candy today.
My grandma used to always have these weird old timey candies in this little fancy glass jar on her coffee table. Most of them were not very good. But I did love the butterscotch ones.
"it tastes... clinical." Well now I've heard everything. No joke.
"My original thought was no... but the more I worked it"...
This reminds me *SOOOO* much of the character Quark describing Rootbeer on Deep Space 9. And then noting how the Federation was similar to Rootbeer.
I associate circus peanuts in the list of punishment foods. Gross, just gross.
Hahaha i didn't know circus peanuts had a flavor other than sugar! My mom eats a bag every week!
Tickled that chic-o-stick was included in this - this was always one of my favorite candies growing up.
The peanut bar and chic o stick, were straight out of my childhood from the neighborhood store......love em.
Wow did someone read my comments about trying retro-American candy from last week candy video?! My dad loved circus peanuts for some reason may he rest his soul.
I love them all since I was a kid, 1971.
I am glad y'all were happy with the chic-o-stick and peanut butter bars. They are yum! I remember my dad's aunts having them in their candy dishes.
Omg I loved most of these candles when I was a kid . Born in Michigan and raised. I’m 67
Root beer barrels would be my favorite out of these, while my mother for whatever reason loved circus peanuts. Root beer soda is still popular down south with Barq's being my go-to when it's available. When I lived in PA we had this retro/vintage candy store that sold all of the candies I thought had disappeared and the nostalgia was palpable! I'm talking candy cigarettes, teaberry gum, mint juleps, you name it. It was so cool!
I have to say, I'm a bit surprised how this try ended up!... Y'all seemed to like this candy much more than we like it!... Love watching your try video's!... 😊
Aw! Circus Peanuts were my dad's absolute favorite candy when I was young. I miss him. 🥲
