Ambleside Online, Under the Home, and Wildwood are great free curriculums that are Charlotte Mason in style, providing a living education for free. :)

I’m so glad you said the library isn’t free because of late fees 😂 I’m not alone!

I am not an “unschooling” person. I just can’t get behind it for my own family. But we use Rod & Staff curriculum and it’s affordable, especially if you have many, many kids coming down the line. I think beginning with 4th grade it’s all textbook-based. And the consumable workbooks for the earlier grades are affordable.
And this season is the perfect time to stock up on school supplies! Things are so cheap right now.

Rod & Staff textbooks are so sturdy, too.

My eldest used cherry tomatoes to learn addition & subtraction. 😆
    Organic manipulatives. Ha!
I do love seeing people's fancy hs rooms, hauls, etc but that isn't us. Our stuff is in a cheap book shelf in the dining room. Which reminds me, I need new desks, AKA clipboards. 😉

We have a thrift store called Christian Mission and its a great place to get books! They sell books individually or you can get a large brown paper bag full for $6!

There is a great (fairly cheap) online resource called Schoolhouse Teachers. It’s especially great for larger families. You pay a base fee (I believe right now it’s $19 a month) and get access to EVERYTHING. They have classes in all subjects including extracurricular activities. They have bible, history, photography, music, science, social studies, math, language arts, foreign language, violin, cooking, PE, guitar and health just to name a “few”. They offer classes suitable for preschoolers & toddlers all the way up to 12th grade. You don’t have to pay more per class. It’s the same price if you had one child doing two classes or 15 children doing all of their schooling there.
Also, goodwill books are the best! My brother really learned to read at Goodwill. My mom & I were looking at books and movies. My little brother (probably like 6/7 at the time) stumbled across the book “mouse soup” and started reading it. He read it to himself, he read it out loud. It’s what started his love for reading. Momma spent hours trying to teach him to read, and then one day in goodwill it just clicked. He probably read that book a good ten times before we even left the store. And of course we bought it for him. It was only like 50 cents!!!!! You don’t need all of this fancy curriculum, you just need a book that sparks your child’s interest.

My kids (and I) love Mouse Soup! What a sweet story! I SO agree all you need is to spark a child’s interest, and they will pursue learning themselves.
I will say I used Schoolhouse Teachers for about a year. I really liked the kindergarten math curriculum for my daughter. However, it had SO many choices I found it to be overwhelming for my personality.

Please can you explain what you actually do as an ‘unschooling’ family? Is there set ‘school’ time each day? I’m a bit clueless about unschooling.

I'm almost sure you can find a Facebook group for unschoolers and get lots of ideas and support there. Also read books on unschooling like Free to Learn, Home Grown, etc. Just a suggestion. 🙂

Using easy peasy this year. I orders the books on amazon for like 6 bucks. I also have all about reading that my charter paid for. Not sure I’ll use again. Depends how I like it.

I’ve done Montessori, charter project based learning, public, private, and online school. I really loved online and Montessori school and it taught me bout life skills, like time management and planning ahead etc etc. I’m now at university and am already contemplating doing unschooling or homeschool (mix of both), for my imaginary child lol, because of the benefits and the “want to learn” and not forcing them to learn. Chronological and Development don’t go at the same pace, so let the kiddos learn as their brain allows them too.

I used connection academy, they provide everything for free. Computers, books, science projects I mean everything. This is how I homeschooled, they let you work around your schedule and your child's. Nothing is set and they have teachers along with the parents.
One of my kids like to sleep in, so they worked in the afternoon, another might be mornings. Your family's call. Really look into it

We do easy peasy and you either have to print the books or buy them (very inexepsive) on amazon. You can't do it *all* online. But we are doing 1st grade and have bought the printed books. All the books and basic supplies and our homeschool costs are under $50 for the year.

I never feel bad paying fees for the library here and there, because I've definitely heavily utilized the library. But, perhaps your oldest few kids could help you keep track of when materials are due back at the library? I bet if you made a financial incentive for them, I think at least one of your oldest few would be good at it, and you'd pay the fees to the kids instead of the library, and it sounds like a good lesson maybe?

Cheap tip for people who want a big white board: Lowe’s/Home Depot sells huge white boards and will usually cut them down to whatever size you want. My mom bought one of those for the wall and we used that for so many things, especially math when she homeschooled us.

We use a lot of Rod and Staff here and one can usually find any subject about 10 dollars used....and then because they are hardbacks, they are free for the next student. We invested in reusable books that we enjoy-Apologia, Notgrass, and Rod and Staff when we had extra money....it has blessed us so many times when haven't had much if any of a budget. We love also having a basic primary readaloud rotation as I know I will have what I need no matter the financial situation next year-Beautiful Feet is great for that.

You are like me. I hate a ton of workbooks. Thats actually something that I wanted to change about my kids' education, I wanted it to be a little more free. You are like me where you hate deadlines. I haaaate them too.

My kids are in high school so I buy used textbooks really cheap on Amazon, and then I buy the correlating interactive readers if I can get them. So I might spend $6 on a used textbook, and $4 on the "used" but empty readers x 3. So it ends up being about $18 to teach a high school level subject to three kids. Sometimes I buy supplementary materials and books that correlate. They are almost always used, or very inexpensive. We use a composition notebook to take notes, and one notebook for each kid usually lasts a whole year across all subjects. It's also easy to adapt, because one of my kids is in 10th and wants to school completely on his own, and my other two are in 9th and like me to be involved. Also, the clearance section at Barnes and Noble can be amazing(not to be confused with their bargain section), or if you have an Ollie's near you they have great books for cheap. Sometimes when they are trying to clear books, they will have a deal where you can fill a shopping hand basket up with books for $2.50, as many books as you can fit 👍

We are using easy peasy all in one homeschool language arts this year and they do offer physical books for those that prefer a physical copy and they were super cheap! We also love love love documentaries! I am also always able to find Saxon math textbooks for 5 bucks at my local used bookstore. I once heard it said that all you need to teach your child is a Bible, a math book, and a library card!

Love these tips. We've homeschooled for a long time but some of these I've never heard of. We've used Amy Maryon's free printable grade level books in the past and find them really helpful for just keeping everything rolling during those times you just don't even have the brain power to choose anything. They're free on her website, or you can buy them super cheap printed from Amazon. Yes, there are some spelling errors and typos. It's just a fellow homeschool mom who makes her own quick worksheets for her own kids and posts them online. It's just English and math, just the basics. But there are some seasons of life where you just need something cheap and easy, and if you complete that and grab some good books from the library every week you're probably good to go. I also like that it's all in one book, with a page of math, a page of spelling, a page of writing, etc and they just work through start to finish without really thinking about what to do next.
This year I've created basically the same thing as Amy's, but using the resources from Schoolhouse Teachers. It's $5 for the first month, and cost me $20 in printer paper and $14 in black ink refills. This was enough to do a full year's worth of school for 5 Kids. I just went through and chose a math, English, history, science, and geography course for each kid. Some kids are doing the same, and sometimes one kid does a full course, while a younger sibling is only covering the first half of that course. I love that they're all common core free, and there are some super interesting homeschool options. I did the same thing and arranged everything in a giant binder with a couple pages of math, a couple pages of English, a couple of science, etc.
