      Not really the airport isn't moving and you have a runway 20x as long as a aircraft carrier. Also you dont have a tower, bridge and heaps of other aircraft to avoid. Also at one end you dont go into water as there is a hill and road at the of the runway

    20 years ago I flew from Christchurch into Wellington, we touched down and ten took off back to CCH. They put us up in a Hotel then we tried ago the next morning. Same thing happened ago but this time we went to Auckland !!!! 3/4 hours later we returned and landed safely....22 ours for an hour flight. Any landing at Wellington is a good landing, it is almost always windy, that is why they call it “Windy Wellington”

  • @brentsummers7377

    Gone through 2 attempts like this in a Jetstar A320 but also low cloud so only caught glimpses of the airport as go around power was applied. That's the moment you would be quite happy for the pilot's salary to be substantially increased

  • @aquilarossa5191
    @aquilarossa5191 3 роки тому +2

    That airport can be one of the worst. They used to fly me to and from Chch to home when we docked from sea, or if it was time to go back out. Usually that involved changing planes in Wellington. We often landed in little planes that only hold 20 passengers or so. They would get all sideways coming into land. Never had to go around though. I did a fair bit of skydiving in Nelson for a while. I'd rather jump out of a plane than land in one during high cross winds. I remember passengers applauding some landings, because they were so hairy.
    P.S. Not much scares me. I am cold as ice most of the time. Not even violent storms in the Southern Ocean that had highly experienced Norwegian officers getting their survival suits ready. I was buzzing at the fury of nature. But landing in Wellington made me nervous at times. One second the runway is ahead, the next it is out the port window and then suddenly it is is to starboard. Planes get buffeted around by Wellington winds like they are made of paper. I guess the terrian makes high wind even more hairy.

      Bryan su nah, Wellington gets nice weather too. It’s best to avoid landing around spring time cause that’s when it’s more windy. If I remember last year correctly, during spring time we had 1 in 3 days reaching a max wind gust of 100+ Km/hr. About this time of year (autumn) we get max wind gusts of 100+ around every fortnight-ish on average

      Bryan su I’m not too sure. We have both good and bad days but more good than bad. If you didn’t know, Wellington apparently has the same average wind speeds as NYC however the range is much larger from Wellington. So it basically what it means is that if you come on a bad day it’ll probably be bad but if it’s a nice day it’ll be great.
