In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. Two years later this motor is going strong ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxBZWgzfpS2Jj7JqIHyaSZjyVHNUgCKCBf Just uploaded a video of it after 2 years. We use it probably a dozen days each year on our small raft.-original review- We got this motor the other day and tested it out. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems good to me. It has all the features advertised - the motor housing is metal. We will see how it performs longer term and I will revise this review if needed. Some initial observations:- Good thrust, moves our boat around really well- It comes with a circuit breaker but no switch - so there's no way to kill the motor other than yanking the connection off the battery. I installed an inline switch.- The mount bracket is plastic and I worry it might break- There are a number of plastic parts that I worry about, but the most important ones are metal or some kind of composite
I just finished installing this mod on my Lure 10. Thank you so much for posting this video, I absolutely love it! It's perfect in every way. For those interested, here is a complete price breakdown for all parts necessary for this project: Minn Kota 30 lb. thrust motor: $99.99 Weize 12 V 75 ah battery: $144.99 Newport smart battery box: $65.00 Marine silicone sealant: $7.96 1" hollow drill bit: $15.71 1 1/8" hollow drill bit: $10.38 Quick connector wires: $11.30 Battery connector eyelet (6): $3.95 5 feet of 8 gauge wires: $13.48 Yakattack through hull wiring kit: $19.95 Trolling motor female plug: $26.99 Trolling motor male plug: $21.99 Grand total: $441.69 That price includes everything I could possibly think of that I had to use, save for the power drill. This is much cheaper and a way better setup than the pedal drive system. I know virtually nothing about electrical work but I had no problems whatsoever installing this mod. This and the other video posted are fantastic guides, follow them and you can't go wrong!
Nice clean job on doing this. I have a 13.5 Feelfree kayak and I have gotten so tired of paddling this big rascal around. I was clueless on how to install a trolling motor on it till I watched you do it. Thank you for posting this. Great job on everything.
I’ve got the lure 10 with a minkota 35 mounted just like that. I left the tiller handle on it and it turns great. Bonus of having it there is that the yak will basically duck turn if you are sitting still and turn the trolling motor 90 degrees.
I set up mine a little different .Thanks to you and a few more utubers that had vids on putting the motor in the pod . I thought about it a few years and went ahead and installed one . I did add a pwm , so the battery lasts much longer .
Just wow! Great job! I have just purchased a spare sonar pod box for mt Lure to play with this setup. Will probably try to buy a used small trolling motor like yours or small Minn Kota and make same thing. Kayak fishing is of course all about paddling, but paddling long distances, againts the current or wind may be too hard. If you compare this setup to 2k USD original FeelFree overdrive system then small DIY project sounds much better option.
Oh, Fantastic video. Now I have to decide between FeelFree Lure 13.5 or 11.5. For some reason I'm now starting to lean toward the 11.5 Lure. Your setup rocks!
this is amazing work, but the catch is that you can only put a tiny trolling motor right? Like I cant use a 55lbs trolling motor since it wont fit through pod.
Very interested in actually buying Feel Free's peddle drive system, though this has really made me think I should try something Similar, as I just purchased an 11.5. My question is how much was spent between all equipment to make this work. Including trolling motor price all the way to wiring and drill bit. If you could itemize the total price compared to the peddle drive price I would love to see it.
I’m jealous I didn’t think about it lol, I’ve been researching kayaks and Jon boats deciding which to go with and the feelfree 11.5 being the yak id go with, and with doing so figuring out how I can mount trolling motor to yaks with steering capabilities ect.. yours is by far superior !!
Thanks a lot. I recently upgraded the trolling motor to a minn kota 30lb thrust and a 75ah deep cycle battery. Now it gets up and goes! I can beat some of the strongest winds!
Very helpful video. Did you overlook the need for a motor cutout if you flip the kayak? Hauling yourself over the hull to right the kayak would not be fum with a propeller spinning around.
good job very clean I like. I started with 30 lbs went up to 40 next 45. I do feel the difference. now I put a 3 hp gas 12 mh. I also use it with a 5 hp 20 mh with 3/4 acceleration. very fast.
After using the motor through the sonar box for awhile, has the torque of the motor caused you any problems with the plastic box or the mounts of the box to the kayak? I am impressed with the set up you've done here, but worry the plastic box walls might not be able to handle the stress of the motor like the transom clamp system supplied with the motor. Any comment?
Hey man great video ....question, do you get water in the pod after fishing for a few hours and since your using the pod for the motor where did you mount the transducer and do you think theres enough room for the transducer and the motor.....I'm ready to pull the trigger this weekend and need to know what to get
It doesn’t need to be watertight. You could remove the pod completely and the water will only come up as high as the natural water level it will never come Over-the-top
I just got a 3 Waters Big Fish 120 I plan on doing this to since they have the same console. Thanks for the video. Also, how long does that smaller battery work? I was thinking I would have to get one of those 100 pound marine batteries.
You did a phenomenal job on this! Thanks for the video. Going to follow it and do it myself. Its a clean set up comparatively speaking just as good as the manufacturers. I actually like this better without all the visual extras and just using your rudder with your feet at a fraction of the price.
as long as u got the removable sonar pod, it can be done. Also i upgraded to a 30lb-40lb thrust minn kota. i'm sure if u measure right, you can go bigger than what I have now.
It looks like this motor has a max thrust of 18 lbs... does this work well for you when there is a heavy current or high winds? I am thinking about doing this to my Feelfree Lure 11.5 but I use mine in saltwater and sometimes have to battle wind and current. Just wanted to know your thoughts...should I step up to a 36 lb thrust motor?
great video just did it to my 11.5 did you ever break the prop on the trolling motor? I wanted to order an extra one as a back up in case mine broke and im having problems finding them let me know thanks
After you cut the shaft what is the new customized length. I'm looking for a little more oomph and power and thinking of purchasing Minn Kota C30 if lower unit will fit through the Feel Free open well for the Sonar Hub Housing.
Great video and setup Dab, thanks for sharing. I've watched two of your videos now. Do you have a video with your fish finder/sonar transducer set up? Thanks again!
How do you recharge your battery after end of fishing trip? I wish your info section on this video also showed what stuff you used so we can make one trip and come home begin the project
It seems like turning the controller around would cause the throttle controls to be backwards with respect to forwards & reverse. Did you swap around motor connections to fix that?
If u go with the sevylor, the prop just wiggles out of the hole easily aligning itself. If u go with a bigger thruster like a minn kota, u will have to reach in the hole to straighten it. Its very easy to do as well. Just as long as u unlug it first so u dont accidently cut ur fingers off lol.
Have you come up with any tricks to get the prop aligned when pulling the motor out to come ashore? I rigged my feelfree in a similar way. I bent some 1/4 inch aluminum stock and riveted it along the side of the sonar pod opening, and I clamp the motor to that. It doesn't track well, but I plan to add a rudder. I get a lot of water in the boat at higher speeds, so I cut out a piece of rubber to minimize that, which only kind of helps. I am curious if you get a lot of water in the soar pod? Any advice you can share is appreciated. Thanks!
Awesome mod, man. Great work and great video. Thanks for the info. I have no idea how to get my propeller to align. I'm not even able to reach behind the shaft to turn it by hand. Definitely a pain, but I'll think of something.
its a minn kota 30, but because its clamped to the front of the base of the sonar pod, I have to pull up and back at the same time to get it out. I leave it clamped, and shortened the handle so i can fold it flat and store it under my work bench. I was trying to think of like some sort of pin that I could push down to stop the blade, but I don't know if that would work or just ruin the prop. I also considered a weight or something that when the shaft is folds back horizontally. gravity would align the prop vertically. I imagine this would cause it to wobble pretty bad though. Still thinking... I'll take any ideas!
I use the same motor on my Hobie PA 14 and have found that I prefer to let the motor turn freely and use it to steer rather than using the rudder. I find it also turns around in a shorter radius than when I use the rudder. I also have a Feelfree 11.5 lure that I am probably going to put the same type of motor on but probably won't use the center pod box, but make a wood plug instead. Reason is I think the motor head can be lower and more out of the way. I use a Duracell Ultra 35aH AGM battery . Thanks for the video.
Bill McClurg check out the wooden bracket I made for my feelfree lure 11.5. Check out searching for feelfree lure 11.5 sonar pod trolling motor bracket
Thanks again for your reply... Okay I saw it on your other video. Im really impressed!. I wonder if people understand what you've done here and how clean it is and functional and at the craziest price point! You should video on your fish finder installation Id love to see it. Again, its in a great spot...You have an eye for this stuff. Let me ask you? Is there any reason why you could not put on a more powerful trolling motor on a Kayak? In other words if you could pick any motor what would it be today?
The length of the propel module should line line up perfectly with the bottom of the sonar pod.if you shift the shaft forward or backwards when u are cutting the hole into the pod, it may not fit perfectly. It must be positioned right before you cut the hollow hole.
Great job, i haven't even bought my kayak yet and i'm watching upgrades..lol. We really wanted the 10' lure, but no rudder and i don't believe the center box comes out. anyway i have subsribed.
I’m thinking of buying a feel free lure 13.5. I’m 54 years old and 6’3” and 330 pounds. I think having a trolling motor would help me tremendously. Just wondering how long the trolling motor lasts you on that battery?
I just upgraded to the minn kota endura c2 30lb thrust trolling motor. Fits perfect with minor modification. Just have to realign the shaft into the right place before drilling the whole for it. Im sure a 55lb thruster would be fine as long as its the same size as the 30lb and has two fin propeller instead of 3 in order to fit in the whole
Thank you for the great video. I fish mainly Texas lakes and have a buddy with the 30 lb thrust motor setup. Your 18 lb thrust seems efficient. Any reason you chose the 18lb thrust over 30 lbs? Any idea your speed on an average day? Just wondering how much difference there is in speed between the 18 and 30 lb motor.
Thanks so much for the fast reply! It does help. I am not really looking for super speed. Mainly, if I am out with others with motors, just wondering if I'd get left far behind. That said, I mainly fish solo, or in a general area with others - not really competing for speed. Thank you again!
Thanks, your setup is awesome and kudos, sir. Just to offer future options, I found this page and it lists a few motors. I am also looking at the Watersnake ASP Salt Water 24-lb thrust motor. 8.5 pounds weight, same price of $129. I want to saltwater fish as well, so wanted to share. Thanks again! hey bud i have a question on the set up did the kayak come with the hole in the hatch or did u have to cut it cause every review i have looked at the hatch is not completely open so u get back with me before i spend 1300 bucks on the wrong yak
So confused by this when you pull up to the bank to leave off the water or put you kayak in the water how does the motor prop not scrape the piss out of the ground? It's like a foot lower than the bottom of the kayak & if you were to take it off before you dock the kayak would sink with water? It kind of limits shallow places also doesn't it? I want to do this with mine but not sure if it will end up a bad idea. Can you please respond on your experience with it?
Dab4Bass TV during removal, how do you adjust your prop if it's turned the wrong direction? For example when placing in the motor the prop needs to be pointed north and south and the same is needed when taking it out..... If the prop is facing east and west wouldn't the prop hit the boat and there's no way to reach down to your prop to turn it north and south...
That battery box and battery you have listed in the description is not what you installed. I purchased both and they are way to big to fit in the front hatch.
Keep Fishing Forward thanks man me and a buddy are gonna order this trolling motor in a day or so and put them on our lures! Anything you would change or done different?
Keep Fishing Forward that’s the same thing we said we was thinking about now cutting the shaft and keeping it 18 cause of the standing up would be easier. I appreciate your response man. I hit you with that sub! Looking forward to more videos
Dab4Bass TV I may do this if my trolling motor fits. I have a 3waters big fish 120. It is made by Feel free and has a similar dry box. I'm using it for my sonar, but I can move it I think. It has no hull access, so it may be difficult. Thanks, great video.
Hey bro I just saw a dude the name of his site is mylure that put a 40 pound thrust through the sonar hole, check him out it was a Minn Kota but didn’t catch the model..fish forward!

Thanks for the great vid! Do you have to use a rudder for better steering with the motor mounted in front (center) of the kayak?
Yes. A rudder is a must for better control of steering.
Old video but still helpful to me. What kind of speed and battery life do you get with that motor ???
About 3 to 4 mph, and about 3 hours of run time on a 75 mah Lithium at full speed.
Just an average. Your boat, motor and battery may differ.
good job very clean I like. I started with 30 lbs went up to 40 next 45. I do feel the difference. now I put a 3 hp gas 12 mh. I also use it with a 5 hp 20 mh with 3/4 acceleration. very fast.

Thank for the video! Really help me out!
Question- how long of a charge do you get out of your battery with your feelfree lure?
Looks great and good details on each step. I have a BigTuna Kayak and what you did gave me some idea for my TunaTanks location
Its held up great. They made that plastic very strong
I personally don’t think it’s a real problem only because if there does become an issue in time reinforcing it would not be a difficult task

Awsome mod. Where did you get your battery and how much did you pay for it? How long dose your battery last? Will it push 30# trolling motor?

It doesn’t need to be watertight. You could remove the pod completely and the water will only come up as high as the natural water level it will never come Over-the-top

Hi. How long does your battery last??
TYVM for a fantastic video. I was wondering about cavitation noise.
Do you think this would work on the feel free 13.5 v2 and what size motor is that?
as long as u got the removable sonar pod, it can be done. Also i upgraded to a 30lb-40lb thrust minn kota. i'm sure if u measure right, you can go bigger than what I have now.

Great video and setup Dab, thanks for sharing. I've watched two of your videos now. Do you have a video with your fish finder/sonar transducer set up? Thanks again!
Will it turn the kayak at all. Don’t want to spend 250 bucks on a rutter
It will turn it but not as well as with the rudder. U could have a small tiny paddle board to help u turn it too.

How long does that battery last on a charge
Depends on how often you use it. I would say continuous full speed would be 1.5 hrs.
@@KeepFishingForward so do you think its worth it
Go with a minn kota and a 75ah deep cycle battery
What are the dimensions of the center pod hole, and whats the max size trolling motor u can put.
The max length is 11.5”. My 45 lb thrust motor was too big so I got a 30 and it fits perfectly.
@@Cmcloughlin4840 which brand 30lb fits
@@ianlugo4447 minn kota
What exact model trolling motor is that?
Sevylor 18 lb thrust
How far would that battery take you
I hqvent really clocked the miles but i would say it could go continuously 6 miles. Give or take.
Do you have a fish finder on it now? If so where did you put it? thank you
Thanks again for your reply...
Okay understood. Well listen thanks for all your responses i appreciate it!
About to do this to my lure 13.5. Do you get good speed off of your rig?
Get the minn kota 30 lb thrust instead of the sevylor 18lb. Its a lot faster! But will require a bigger battery.
Keep Fishing Forward will the Kota fit?
Yes but it is very tight and u have to repostion it differently than what the video shows
Keep Fishing Forward reposition which part differently?
The length of the propel module should line line up perfectly with the bottom of the sonar pod.if you shift the shaft forward or backwards when u are cutting the hole into the pod, it may not fit perfectly. It must be positioned right before you cut the hollow hole.
Fantastic mod. Nice work.
Great job, i haven't even bought my kayak yet and i'm watching upgrades..lol. We really wanted the 10' lure, but no rudder and i don't believe the center box comes out. anyway i have subsribed.
How long do you get out of your trolling motor using the 12 volt battery on you feel free lure kayak?
I’m thinking of buying a feel free lure 13.5. I’m 54 years old and 6’3” and 330 pounds. I think having a trolling motor would help me tremendously. Just wondering how long the trolling motor lasts you on that battery?
Keep Fishing Forward Wow, that is awesome. Thanks so much for the feedback. Very much appreciated!!!!!
This is an excellent video! Thank you!
Bravo
Great video!
Clean job. going to do the same .
Thanks to you
Great idea, had the same one😊

Is that the one you installed?
Keep Fishing Forward what thrust power did u put and what would fit could I go with a 55
I just upgraded to the minn kota endura c2 30lb thrust trolling motor.

Great Mod.
hey bud i have a question on the set up did the kayak come with the hole in the hatch or did u have to cut it cause every review i have looked at the hatch is not completely open so u get back with me before i spend 1300 bucks on the wrong yak
now where can i buy one that not ordered off line cause i want so many extras
i am from jesup ga if that might help
okay i am okay with the drive long as i get to see my new toy and get what i need for it so ill be satisfied with my choose
thanks for all the help bud
Nice job!!
So you cut 5 inches off of a 18 inch shaft??
Keep Fishing Forward thanks man me and a buddy are gonna order this trolling motor in a day or so and put them on our lures! Anything you would change or done different?
Keep Fishing Forward that’s the same thing we said we was thinking about now cutting the shaft and keeping it 18 cause of the standing up would be easier. I appreciate your response man. I hit you with that sub! Looking forward to more videos
Very nice job! Thank you for sharing!
I have a question, how do you turn it
Dab4Bass TV I may do this if my trolling motor fits. I have a 3waters big fish 120. It is made by Feel free and has a similar dry box. I'm using it for my sonar, but I can move it I think. It has no hull access, so it may be difficult. Thanks, great video.
Nice job dude!
Good job dude....
Appreciate it my guy
Still an excellent video!
I got the 55lb trust it rips
Is it the same size as the 30lb?
No almost double the motor
Back mounted?
Yes on a ascend fs12t
Thanks dude
Hey bro I just saw a dude the name of his site is mylure that put a 40 pound thrust through the sonar hole, check him out it was a Minn Kota but didn’t catch the model..fish forward!
Wow i will! Thanks!
