Evan this video is like 5 years old and yet it feels so fresh, as if I was destined to hear it today. Thank you for creating beauty in the world and showing people how to be better idea archeologists.
Your advise, "Just Start", is actually the best. Here I am with my own channel, although sucking at it at the moment, but ready to improve and grow in front of everyone! The key I guess is being open to criticism, even the harsh and derogatory ones.
+Nerdwriter1 Serialized fiction writing is something that never should have gone away. Monthly, bi-weekly, weekly, whatever you think you can do. I say it's a great idea. Love your work. As a musician/philosopher/theologian/general student of humanity, you and Mike over at Idea Channel have become two of my favorite UA-camrs in the last year or two. Many nights when I should have been grading tests or writing papers for grad school I would take a break and have Coffee on a Tuesday. I'll have to think about becoming a patron so you can get your own JSTOR JPass... [but I'm getting my own first, you understand! haha]
+Nerdwriter1 I think it's a great idea. Your narration in your videos is already well structured and captivating, so I'd love to see it in a written format, without visual aids. Thanks a lot for your amazing content!
YES! I may have paused the video (and created an account) an account just to say what a good idea this is! XD The concept of releasing a novel chapter by chapter is fresh and organic. Keep up the good work!
+Nerdwriter1 Mate I was looking through like every Video from you in the last two days and have to say that your Videos are AWESOME! thanks for making such awesome content and I'll propably stick here for a while:) And after watching some of your Videos I think you should give the little Game "To the Moon" a try. It has a very good story and I think you'll propably like it. Sorry 4 bad English its not my mother thongue.
YESYESYES, the Rihanna video was the best so far! I love so many of your videos, but that one was just different and cool and unique and great from start to finish... I keep coming back to that one because it is the perfect example of how your viewers don't have to be especially interested in or knowledgable about the topics of your videos. I had never given ANY thought about dancehall or the influence of Jamaican music on popular music and yet the video just grabbed and fascinated me to no end.
"Are there any films you consider to be flawless?" All right let's hear what are his picks "The Big Lebowski and Hot Fuzz" ...you have my undying support and loyalty
I actually think the pauses at the end of your videos are usually very well placed. They do a great job of indicating that we are at the end of the video, and it creates a good space so that the transition from your final and often most important statement to your endcard doesn't feel jarring and I often think of your channel when critiquing other channels in conversations with my friends. You do great work, man; you're an inspiration. Keep it up.
I loooove your long pauses in the end.people might say that its pretentious but I believe it gives a feel of professionalism & drama that it really makes me go back and re-watch the whole thing again. Keep the videos as you see fit love them 👍
Oh man, holy crap! I have loved your videos for the past six months since I started watching them and I've now seen them all multiple times. But I have always recognized you but couldn't put my finger on it, but DUH! Seeker was a fantastic channel when they were doing regularly scheduled episodes, now they are far apart randomly it seems. Thank you for all the hard work! Keep it up, I love your videos on movies and television
Respect all the work you put in each week! I loved seeing you be able to gather enough of a patreon following to do this full time. Congrats on all the success thus far. It's very inspiring.
Just found your youtube channel and subsequently spent entirely too many wee morning hours trying to watch every video. Keep doing what you're doing because it's brilliant.
I respect you for not doing click bait, your work is amazing! New subbie saw your Caesy Niestat video. Very beautiful the way you captured and explained the genius he is! I'm inspired to get into video essaying :)
New favorite channel. Very well researched and often eye opening. I often have to watch your videos two times to fully understand and appreciate all of your work. All I can say is keep it up!
It's so strange to hear that people call you pretentious. Every time I've watched a video of yours, I've been struck by how thoughtful your essays are and how much it seems like you care about the topics. That's so exciting that you are doing a TEDx talk! Thanks for giving us some insight into your creative process! This was very interesting. I hope you get the chance to do more in the future :)
1: You can clickbait me all day long! (No pun intented) I think your work is one of the best in UA-cam and well deserved of alluring titles. 2: Those pauses in the end of a video... They give me goosebumps man. Great editing! I can't praise you enough so I'll just say keep up.
I kind of like the pauses at the end of his videos. It's almost as if that pause signals that it's my turn to speak or think about the subject discussed. It also gives me time to be fascinated by the subject.
Loved this Q&A. I'm trying to get in to this world myself and hearing stuff like how you started and how you've grown are really inspiring. Thanks for sharing! Keep working your ass off!
I found your channel a few weeks ago via WheezyWaiter, and I am seriously blown away by how thoughtful and well done they are! They've definitely inspired me to write better and think about the world on a deeper level!
If you are pretentious don't change, your in depth looks is what makes your channel great. I'd hate to see your videos get dumbed down to make people feel better about themselves. PS I love the pauses at the end, they're like a nice little second to think at the end.
To your editing rhythm: It's beautiful! I loved the beginning of the "UA-cam: The Medium Is The Message" episode. It's so much fun seeing video essays that are so damn pleasing to the eye.
I really like to watch your videos as they're very relaxing and this is my feedback. I really like how you analyze certain films and dissect whatever information you can to give them a fresh perspective which gives so much more value to your content and film's. Good luck on your TedxTalk btw
I just had an idea for a musical analysis video: examine how the Hanz Zimmer's Man of Steel theme relates to the John William's Superman March, and how the William's theme is inspired by Richard Strauss's tone poem Thus Spach Zarathustra, as a case study of how great composers pay homage to each other and how "copying" is essential to great art. Please thumbs up the comment if you think it is a good idea.
I too have at times thought that you sounded somewhat pretentious, but I was easily able to overlook it because the context was so good. I like that you occasionally do these less formal videos that help us to know you better as a person. It contextualizes you and breaks down the pretense. That's the reason I like you and like this channel, and I'm glad a brain like yours has found this perfect outlet. Looking forward to next Wednesday, as always.
I don't think it's just your content that keep us hooked its you as a person your bubbly positive and almost like your always full of light which motivates us viewers. I must admit I thought 17 minutes q & a no way am I watching it but I did and it flew by I enjoyed it.
I'm so excited to watch all of this! Your high quality learning inspires everything from the philosophy I read to the artwork I create... There's something intelligent in your content that pushes me to strive for greatness - similar to the way Casey Neistat's does. Good luck on your TED Talk, I'm certain that it will impress.
You're a very interesting guy! I enjoy learning more about yourself. I hope your channel continues to grow & you keep living out your passion. Hope to see another Q&A soon. Congrats with the Ted talk!!!!!
I'm glad to have stumbled onto your channel. It started with your video about Inside Out. I really love that movie for reasons as you pointed out in your video that it serves as a learning aid or tool in helping others understand that emotions are crucial to our growth. And so far I am inspired by your channel and I am still trying to find time to start mine. Like you said, "Just Start!" I think I will. Keep up the great work.
I don't really see why anyone would find the pause at the end of the videos pretentious. You've gotten to the end of your video, you make your final point, and then you need to leave a little space to take it in afterwards. It'd just be bad video editing if you immediately jump to something else.
+Nerdwriter1 I see the "pretentious pause" this way: At the end of a book does the author/ publisher immediately start advertising other books, or are there a few blank pages to put notes. That's the pause- those few pages at the end of a book. The pause is there for contemplation.
Lord of the Nerds So a love for pauses, as you say, are indicative to a passion for a particular subject. I think you just like the theatrics of these ellipses and are giving yourself worth. You are putting yourself above people because you like how this dude makes videos. People having differing opinions on certain aspects of an idea doesn't mean they enjoy the whole idea. It's like the Presidential election. The idea is what is the best way of running the country. We are all in agreement that it needs to be done- we just all have different opinions on how it should be done.
You're a better extemporaneous speaker than you think. I really love QnAs with my favorite creators. It's just enjoyable to hear their opinions on mundane things. It makes you seem more like a person. Tl;dr: you should consider doing this again in the future sometime
yes! huge fan of vox. been watching them since they started doing video. Wish there were more channels that explored topics like you or them. much respect for the casey neistat reference too!
I just sat down to watch Hot Fuzz for the first time. WOW! That movie was brilliant and I never would have watched it without your recommendation so major thank you.
Don't remove the pauses!!! Your editing gut is spot on. Pretentiousness is usually a reflection of your critic. Not always, but mostly. Keep up the great work!
Hey Evan, really love your work! You're one of the main content creators that have had a strong influence on me leaving my job to chase some more creative endeavours closer to my heart. Also, if you are not using a clap test at the beginning of your videos I would recommend doing so, the audio seems to be out of sync by around +400-500ms. My deepest appreciation.
Thanks! 🙏🏽 Enjoyed this so much 💮 It's fun to read other fans who have hit the suscribe button after watching a video you made on something they already ❤️ but then stayed because of the great content of your channel. In my case it was after watching The Next Era of Architecture, but ever since you have made me further appreciate some of my favorite movies or watch and enjoy the ones I haven't. Just thought it'd be super interesting to see you doing something on fashion or maybe typography, I'm sure you would enjoy it. Good luck with all that's ahead and keep up being awesome 👍🏽✨
If/when you decide to release the chapters I want to know if you'll consider putting them in podcast form. Not because I don't want to read them but my phones my only computer for now and its so damn small. Love your videos, rhythm narration and eye for design. You're the BEST
+Quadrant4Delta I do this on fanfiction.net with a few other series. I love the format of getting a new chapter every month or two. Got addicted by the infamous HPMOR and branched out a bit form there.
The article from Hank Green that you quote here is a fun thing, because for the longest time I looked at your thumbnails with suspicion (clickbait titles make me cringe) and I only started watching your videos when someone pointed out that the content was actually not clickbaitish but properly constructed and personal. It was actually the titles that made me stay out of watching super cool content! I guess it works differently for everyone.
I don't know that I'd be considered a fan of "you"... mostly because I don't know much about you until I just discovered your Twitter feed. But having said that. I haven't missed an episode since I've discovered this channel in the last year! I love your channel!
Watched this while I ate a spanking pasta bake. Good work man, I'm also fortunate enough to be living off my creative writing talents :). We need to just get on with automation and universal basic income so everyone can externalise their unique, creative capacities. The only thing wrong with your channel is that I'll end up watching analysis' of films I haven't seen! All the best from the UK, Mr Nerd Writer.
I got so excited when you said that the two flawless movies were The Big Lebowski and Hot Fuzz because I thought EXACTLY that. I really thought the plot of both movies evolved in such amazing ways, the cinematography of both was great, especially in Hot Fuzz. I was really surprised you said both of those, I expected you to say some weird Indie film or some older movie I had never heard of. Another film that I really like is the Grand Budapest Hotel.
Evan this video is like 5 years old and yet it feels so fresh, as if I was destined to hear it today. Thank you for creating beauty in the world and showing people how to be better idea archeologists.

+Cinema Beyond Entertainment Keep grinding! And good work.
It looks as though you’ve come far these past six years!
I love the pauses at the end of your videos! Often it emphasizes the closing statement of your videos and makes it seem much more powerful.
You're a beast bro
+Briller Thanks, Briller. I'm trying.
+Nerdwriter1 You are being man, you are being :)
+Briller Briller?! Here?? i love you dude :D
Thanks bro
Pssst!!!! I may have put the first chapter of the novel here: www.wattpad.com/story/67530724-aubade/parts

I seriously believe that the future generations of filmmakers should study Hot Fuzz

I would be interested to see a video essay on your thoughts of Serial podcast or This American Life
Yasss.
I love the way you talk. Don't ever change that!
I loooove your long pauses in the end.people might say that its pretentious but I believe it gives a feel of professionalism & drama that it really makes me go back and re-watch the whole thing again. Keep the videos as you see fit love them 👍
The way you speak is a part of what makes you unique. It makes me intrigued about your topic and makes you sound more authoritative.
I really really like the long pauses at the end. It allows the brilliance of your performance to simmer in my mind.
I love the silence at the end of your videos. During that moment everything in the video hits me all at once.
'Pretentious' Whaaaaaaaaat!? No way, you're actually pretty down-to-earth. It just happens to be that you're also a very self-ware intelligent person.
True. I'm the one who's pretentious.
True. It’s Nigel who’s pretentious
Not gonna lie, I started this not thinking I would finish a 17 min Q&A but you held my attention the entire time. Even your Q&A vids are great!
Haha, exactly the same. Hes good at engaging with people
Respect all the work you put in each week! I loved seeing you be able to gather enough of a patreon following to do this full time. Congrats on all the success thus far. It's very inspiring.
+Darren C Bui Thanks Darren!
Thanks, Evan! Always inspiring and insightful. You were the first PATREON creator my wife and I got into. WHAT-WHAAAAAAAT... GET THAT PATREON!!!
Just found your youtube channel and subsequently spent entirely too many wee morning hours trying to watch every video. Keep doing what you're doing because it's brilliant.
your body of work's pretty impressive. it's quite the achievement to create videos of such quality on a weekly basis. thanks for that
I respect you for not doing click bait, your work is amazing! New subbie saw your Caesy Niestat video. Very beautiful the way you captured and explained the genius he is! I'm inspired to get into video essaying :)
Lotus Sky did you ever get into them? I'd be curious to see any that you made :)
I like the drama created by the pauses. Adds tension and emotion.
It's great to see someone on UA-cam with so much passion for culture, keep doing what you're doing. I'm enjoying every video.
I must say, I enjoy your channel so much. Your videos are a high quality, and I always end up coming back here. Keep up the great work!
New favorite channel. Very well researched and often eye opening. I often have to watch your videos two times to fully understand and appreciate all of your work. All I can say is keep it up!
Just discovered your channel a few days ago, and I'm completely addicted. Amazing work!

+Abi Cheers, Abi!
really appreciate how you find deeper meanings embedded in something as simple as the word "fun".
Very easy to see the influence of Every Frame on your work. I love both of your breakdowns so much. Keep it up.
Head over heals falling for your channel with every new video I watch
seriously one of my favorite and best channels on youtube. great source for some enlightenment.
+DotHog Thank you, Doghot!
1: You can clickbait me all day long! (No pun intented) I think your work is one of the best in UA-cam and well deserved of alluring titles.
2: Those pauses in the end of a video... They give me goosebumps man. Great editing!
I can't praise you enough so I'll just say keep up.
Honestly, thank you for your dedication. You are a huge inspiration. Really looking forward to that TED talk!
+Liam Lynch Thank you, Liam.
I kind of like the pauses at the end of his videos. It's almost as if that pause signals that it's my turn to speak or think about the subject discussed. It also gives me time to be fascinated by the subject.
It's really awesome that you replied! I've been a subscriber and general fan for awhile so to get a response is great. Keep it up Evan!
+luis sores My pleasure. Thanks for the question.

+Nerdwriter1 I really would like to see what you can do about movie LEON, like what you did with Heat and others
+Nerdwriter1 You should do Fight club 1 & 2

+Іван Деркач there's a 2?
***** second one was recently finished in the form of 10 issues of comics, written by Palahniuk
I always brew coffee when I watch your channel. The starting sequence over-stimulates my coffee-craving brain centers.
Thank you for your videos.
This is my #1 youtube channel.
+James Van Antwerp This is my #1 comment
Thank you for this Q&A. Your'e honestly an inspiration for me and many internet citizens and it's nice to hear your advice.
+Dope Docs It's my pleasure. Thanks for your comment. Good comments keep me going.
i love the 'pretentious pauses'/final lines at the end of your videos!!
If you are pretentious don't change, your in depth looks is what makes your channel great. I'd hate to see your videos get dumbed down to make people feel better about themselves.
PS I love the pauses at the end, they're like a nice little second to think at the end.
What a great Q&A. You always inspire, both creatively and intellectually, and your essays are bright spots in my day. Thank you.
I'd really like to read a chapter by chapter novel by you. If you ever release it let us know where we can find it. Can't wait till your next video.
I love the advice you gave about learning through action (with creative work). Applies to so much.
To your editing rhythm: It's beautiful! I loved the beginning of the "UA-cam: The Medium Is The Message" episode. It's so much fun seeing video essays that are so damn pleasing to the eye.
Really inspiring. I come back to this video frequently
As a new UA-camr I gotta say that the last Q/A is really helpful. Thanks for the great videos!
You have become one of those inspirational UA-camrs, thank you and I hope to be on that level some day.

I can't wait to hear your TED Talk, you're inspiring to listen to, keep up the great work :)
+Katie Mairead I was psyched when he said he was writing a ted talk.. then I looked it up and it was TEDx. :(
You're a very interesting guy! I enjoy learning more about yourself. I hope your channel continues to grow & you keep living out your passion. Hope to see another Q&A soon. Congrats with the Ted talk!!!!!
i love the language of your videos! Really getting a well versed writer vibe from you!
I'm glad to have stumbled onto your channel. It started with your video about Inside Out. Thank you for adding Miles Davis: Blue in Green. You are the inspiration for my future video projects!
This channel is so great. I can't believe I've only come across it now.
your voice and facial gestures resemble Jim from the American 'Office', haha ;)
I was scrolling down looking for someone else who thought this. It's uncanny.
Congrats on the TED talk (;
+Eeuphonious Thank you!
Don't you dare shorten those pauses!
The Great Lurk +
You really are a great inspiration of mine, thanks for making things man
+KhanStopMe Cheers! Thank for helping me make things.
I don't really see why anyone would find the pause at the end of the videos pretentious. You've gotten to the end of your video, you make your final point, and then you need to leave a little space to take it in afterwards. It'd just be bad video editing if you immediately jump to something else.
+Israel Storey Thanks, Israel. I lead with my instincts. It's worked so far!
+Nerdwriter1 You are really cool :) What is your favourite poem?
+Nerdwriter1
I see the "pretentious pause" this way: At the end of a book does the author/ publisher immediately start advertising other books, or are there a few blank pages to put notes. That's the pause- those few pages at the end of a book. The pause is there for contemplation.

+chris golden Chase, chase, chase.
YES. Release your book chapter by chapter. That sounds amazing. Yes.
Thanks for doing a video like this. It was really interesting to peek into the mind behind this great, great channel!

I live near Lafayette College and am really excited that you'll be speaking there!
Congrats on your TED talk! Wish I could see it live!
Good luck on the TED Talk, mate. Love your videos!

Keep up the great work. Your videos, analysis and keep your voice and pauses the same! 😃

Thank you so much for what you do, you helped me write my artsy university application essays! Keep being awesome!
That's really cool to put out the book chapter by chapter (the anticipation would kill me though) Congrat's on the TED TALK can't wait to see it
+Nkanyiso Innocent Khwane Thank you!!

I like it that the "just start" ethos can apply to anything we've wanted to begin but have been hesitant to do because we were unsure.
I don't know that I'd be considered a fan of "you"... mostly because I don't know much about you until I just discovered your Twitter feed. But having said that. I haven't missed an episode since I've discovered this channel in the last year!
I love your channel!
Keep doing your thing man. Brilliant channel
The pauses are wonderful!
+Aditya Sinha HAhahahahah. Yay!
