WHY I traded the Harley for an Indian before I ever picked up the Harley

  • So here's Part 1. This explains my dealership experience, and it's one of the things that turned me off from owning a Harley. I guess if you like the bike enough, you deal with it. But it felt bizarre to me coming from a world of low pressure "let the bike sell itself" Indian dealerships to this. The second part of this, coming soon, will explain a little more of the WHY (which has to do more with the culture of SOME, NOT ALL, Harley riders,) and the HOW I managed to pull off a trade before ever picking up the Harley.

I just bought a brand new Electraglide and did not experience that. I did have to stand firm on my offer with the salesman, then sales manager, and finally the general manager, where we made our final deal after he came down a little. They all have to cry about how they aren't making any money on the deal, bla, bla..but, when you get up to leave, they push you up the dealership hierarchy. Just remember, it is your money, and they need it to stay in business. Those bikes will not pay the electric bill unless they are turned into money,,, your money.

Spot on. Go in with buying power (cash, excellent credit, or both), make your offer and be prepared to walk. Remember this though; once you shake the manager's hand, he won. The profit was made. Like Johnson said below; if they're "losing" money you're not taking the bike. Don't fall for that shit.

This had nothing to do with Harley-Davidson Motor Company..! This was literally everything opposite of how Harley wants things done. I work for an Indian dealership, and Indian (Polaris) is so impressed at how Harley does things, they suggest to us to do it the same way... Zero pressure ever!!! You simply had a bad dealer or management experience! The Harley brothers are most likely rolling over in their graves at this happening!
Oh, and the Bell Ringing and horn honking... Well that’s a decades old tradition that is and always has been 100% optional. Sorry this happened to you..! Too bad actually. I do wish you the best of luck with your new Indian. - Shawn

@ARTHUR SEA You're hard to keep up with in these comments. I wish I had the time to do them justice. Yes, there are people that really like a dealership to be up close and personal. For me, it's more about the bike itself than the dealership. My axe has nothing to do with Harley and everything to do with the culture you represent. You simply can't stand to let anyone think that Harley is the only real motorcycle. It's a bizarre way of thinking to me. I have enjoyed Indians and Harleys. What I don't enjoy is the culture that is likely a shrinking percentage, but is still there... and that's basically you in a nutshell. If you look at Shawn, he loves all bikes. That's very cool. That's how we should be, and when the minority of Harley owners stop seeming so insecure about things, I'll stop worrying that when people see me on a Harley, they'll think that I think the way you do.

@ARTHUR SEA I've had an experience recently between Harley and Indian. I was looking at a 2019 H-D Street Glide special in scorched orange and i told the sales person i am stuck between the 2019 SGS and the 2019 Indian Chieftain Limited. I asked him straight out, why should i buy a H-D over an Indian, prices were similar, i think h-D was about $1500 more so similar. His response, because its a Harley! i'm like yeah, and? thats it, he just kept saying its a harley and better dealer network. To make a long story short, i didn't get the SGS (I didn't get the Indian either) but i did just put money down on a 2020 Indian Roadmaster Darkhorse. Harley's cockiness cost them a sale, that might work for the typical Harley fanboy but not on me, Indian is offering way more for my money.

@@snakebite6511 To you and everyone else that might read this. LISTEN UP! I worked at both HD and Indian dealerships. These words are just what I witnessed. Nothing that I am about to say has anything to do with anything else other than facts of my experience. A very long story short. HD's are not engineered or made as well as Indian. Period! 1 in 5 HD's M8 has serious problems with in 1,000 miles! If you ride an M8 you will have to change out tensioners before 20,000 miles or the chances of having engine damage when milage gets above 40,000 is real and present danger. HD or the dealer ship would never admit to this. But it does not negate what i saw. If one, with an open mind, rides and looks at both bikes up close... I found 90% of the people could feel and see that Indian was better made.
That said, Since I have been through the HD brain-washing... I can tell you HD says nothing about their quality. Their entire philosophy is based on " ITS A HARLEY.... THERE FORE YOU SHOULD RIDE AND OWN ONE! THAT is wrong on many levels. But that does work. And it works well. I saw it first hand. One particular instance. This customer had over 150,000 in HD's & 2 were m8 engined. All four bikes were in operative. All kinds of problems. The stealer ship ( cajun hd) was for all intents and purposes AWOL. No help for this poor dude.
On a personal level, I consider myself a motorcyclist.... not a biker. There for I sold the HD's and Indians of my past. I now own a BMW R1200 GS. Even though the Indian was cool, well made, etc.... its capabilities road riding wise are not even close to what a GS can do. Now, continue with your regular biker mentality. I we see you at the next watering hole. Do not try to keep up the the GS. Its impossible !

I just traded a Honda Shadow for a Softail Deluxe and got exactly what I wanted for my trade. Also, every bike I was interested in at Black Hills Harley Davidson had the price clearly marked on the headlight. I felt absolutely zero pressure. In fact, I looked over all the bikes for an hour before a salesman approached me, and that was when I finally settled on a couple of bikes I was interested in.
I had checked out the Indian dealership, and they were quite decent to me as well, but I settled on the Softail immediately after the test drive.

@@davidfalgout7304 if you're asking if I rode an Indian, the answer is yes. Who'd go to any dealership and not ride? This post was in response to the ruthless tactics that someone went through at a Harley dealership. I wanted to express that not all Harley dealers are like that. But, getting back to your question: The Indian that came closest to the style I was looking for was the Chief Classic. Great bike. No question about it, but for me, it ust wasn't as comfortable a fit as the Deluxe. I'm only 5'4", and the seat was just a smidge too high for me. I would have had to get a different seat or lower the bike. The Deluxe was perfect, no adjustments necessary. Another factor that turned me more towards the Harley was the weight difference. Coming from the Honda they're both substantially heavier, but I honestly didn't consider the Deluxe to be heavy. Unfortunately, for me, the Indian was just heavy enough for me to notice. That being said, I decided to let some other lucky soul have the Indian, preferably one a little taller, a little stronger.

Harley has the best dealer network out their, travel anywhere if you have an issue with the bike out of town they will take care of it like you bought it from them(happened to me a few times in the last 30 years of riding). but I agree some are a pain in the arse.
To make the best deal possible go to Harley's main website, get the price of the bike you want, go to the dealership noting the price, do not tell the and ask what the price is if its not the same go to the next dealer and that worked like a charm most dealer have no markup on their bikes and will teach them a lesson about markups.

I had the opposite experience. I went to the local dealership that sold different brands and had an Indian section. I looked at the Indians and sat on a few but the salesman kept hiding from me. I went to the Harley dealer and I was offered a good trade in for my Kawasaki. On the day that I was picking up my electraglide standard ( aka bare bones streetglide ) I talked to two guys that were wanting to trade their Indian chieftains on Harleys. They had fit and finish issues, electrical issues, and the hard saddle bags were wobbly and loose. The Harley dealer was friendly and the salespeople were attentive but not overbearing. If you want to see about accessories for your bike they are more than happy to provide you with a catalogue. The parts department will gladly answer any of your questions. I really enjoy the electraglide standard with the Milwaukee 8 107 engine, it is smooth and powerful. The problem with Indian is fender rust issues, electrical issues, and minor fit and finish issues. These issues can be worked out, but the fact that they are usually in a building with a couple other brands and don't really have an established dealership network is the main issue. In the back of everyone's mind is the fact that this is the 4th or 5th time that they have been in and out of buisness. If motorcycle sales continue to decline Polaris may drop Indian and concentrate on snowmobiles and jet skis. Harley will soldier on until the end.

I bought a new Road King in August of 2018. The dealer in Villa Park IL was firm - Their price out the door including tax etc was about $23K. I think they offered me a discount $1K. It was a Friday and I was going to go and sign for it after work and on a whim I decided to call around a few other IL dealerships. After about the 3rd or fourth call I ended up calling Woodstock Harley. I spoke with the sales manager and for whatever reason (end of the month I think) he needed to sell a bike and was ready to deal. We negotiated to $18.5K out the door . I called Villa Park and gave them a chance to match Woodstock's price (Called Orland too) Both dealers (Orland and Villa Park) basically said if I can get the bike for $18.5 get it because they can't get anywhere near that price. I got the bike for $18.5K out the door tax title everything...When I went to Woodstock to sign the salesman was kind of a dick IMO (Maybe because he wasn't making much of a commission, but then again he didn't do shit for the sale). I talked to the sales manager and negotiated the sale completely over the phone. That was my experience-I am happy with the bike-the only mechanical defect so far is the fuel gauge. It doesn't read properly-it will be fixed under warranty when I get around to it. Safe Travels!
I was going to go test ride an Indian today but it was raining-maybe next weekend...Love Indians too...

Funny you should mention that "follow you" thing. Last year I did a China organised tour and as is usual the tourists get ferried around by the bus load from factory to factory trying to sell you shit. Its part of why these China tours are so cheap, they get kick backs from all the factory they take the tourist to.
Anyhow, we rocked up at this JADE factory and as we entered this warehouse size show room, I noticed a dozen or so sales people standing there as we entered. What I didn't notice straight away was that each one of us tourist got automatically a salesperson assigned to and they were evidently instructed to follow us at no more then 2m distance. When I notice MY stalker I decided to test the theory and walked as fast as I could from one corner of the warehouse to the other, at least 50m, and when I turned around he was right behind me. I am a tall guy and I was walking fast and he was a short-ass Chinese fella who would have had to run to keep up with me.
I couldn't believe this sales tactic. I was so turned off by this that I walked straight out of that warehouse. Sounds exactly what you experienced at Harley. I just hope this isn't some new trend that is now sweeping the earth as THE ideal sales tactic.

The one time I went this guy was rude to me (probably because I was a women) and then when I told them where I was taking my course to get my endorsement he starts bashing the place I’m going to (which my class was the next day) saying they suck and their numbers aren’t great yada yada yada and I should cancel cause people who did their classes are much better and I just don’t like how they operate. If you have to bash your competitors to get people then there is something wrong. Like you said they’re pushy and they can’t give you space to just browse around. I know there will be tons of people who will back Harley but their employees and prices are just overpriced and overrated for me. I’ll buy an Indian way before I’ll go buy a Harley.

The Indian experience was definitely no pressure...the Harley dealer had me sitting down talking numbers after a test ride when I told them I was just looking and wasn't going to be ready to buy for 6 months...they even came back with 3 offers from the sales manager...when I point blank told them I was NOT buying today. Not to mention, they weren't trying to sell me with the bike's features...they were selling me on "the brotherhood." .....Cause...."Ya see, when you're riding on, ya know, a Honda or something...you get waves...but it's just different on a Harley. It's a brotherhood, you know?" (Exact words of the salesman) Mind you...I had been riding a Honda for 6 years at that point and experienced the "insecure Harley owner syndrome" quite a bit. My bike wasn't a real bike, apparently. I literally told the guy, "I've ridden a Honda for the last 6 years and I'll tell you now...don't try to sell me on the "brotherhood." I've experienced it so you better try another angle."
Fast forward 6 months later...Harley dealer calls...again...but instead of sending it to voicemail like I did the last 24 times (literally), I answer it:
"Heyyyyy, this is Bill from xxxxx xxxxx Harley, how are you?"
    "Just fine, thanks."
"Ah, well that's good brother! Hey, I was calling to see if you were still interested in that Street Glide Special you rode a while back! We have some great specials going on right now!"
    "Uhh, yeah...I'm not...I purchased a bike already."
"Oh! Well, what did you end up getting?"
    "An Indian Chieftain."
"Hmm, well what made you choose that?"
"Well...the engine, suspension, remote locking bags, power windshield and brakes that aren't linked to name a few things."
"Hmmph. Well...glad you got what you wanted. Well, you're still welcome to our bike nights if you're interested!"
Gracious, at least, in defeat. Haven't regretted my choice for a moment.

Yep, sounds familiar. They didn't try the "brotherhood" angle on me, but to me it was a very impersonal experience. It's like you're a piece of meat going through a corporate food processor. "Okay, first we say this, then you do that, then sign here, now here's your tour... NEXT!" It just didn't feel good. Fortunately, a few people have commented that they had different experiences (though many had bought quite a few Harleys, so maybe they were treated differently than those of us that didn't,) but I'm sure there have to be good dealerships out there. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Funny how you dog the Harley dealer. You had the option to walk out. To serve your own interests of unloading your trailer nobody else wanted you stayed and bought the Harley. Now its Harleys fault for your bad choices. I like Indian and Harley. I doubt if Indian would like your negative views either. Your comments make you and Indian look bad. Why would I walk out when I found that Harley dealers are far more willing to take my trades than Indian dealers? I didn't want a Harley, but it's a trade-able commodity that could be used to get the actual bike I wanted later. But I admit I have never seen the kind of treatment I'd seen at two of the three Massachusetts dealers I went to. One was actually pretty laid back, but it was small, and one of the larger dealers told me that Harley wants to close them down because they're not a "conforming" dealer. Anyway, I'm not blaming Harley for anyone's bad decisions but their own. Their sales experience, in the majority of dealers I went to, is horrible.

This is only one couples experience. I'm 69 and have been riding since 1975, I have purchased around 14 new motorcycles in my life. Two of them are Harley-Davidson's. I have been to many many dealers in my lifetime.
My first Harley is my 1994 Sportster and my new bike is a 2015 FLHP Road King Police, that has a fantastic suspension system with rear air shocks, that also incorporates a sprung saddle..
I have never has a similar experience, nothing even remotely similar to what this video is about. I was at my local H-D dealer last week with my friend as he was interested in trading in his 2005 FLH Classic (a beautiful machine). While I was there I spoke to a salesman about me trading in for a new Orange 2020 Harley Tri-Glide Trike. He was easy going and he did not use pressure tactics at all. I was free to walk around the entire dealership and look at merchandise and every vehicle on the show room floor. I was free to speak with anyone I wished. I have no idea as to why this guy had his experience but considering how many millions of people occupy our world there is bound to be some really odd ball experiences. But to actually go so far as to make a 15 min video about it, this guy is a Putz. To use this experience as an excuse to trade an new machine for another brand is dumb! You make your motorcycle purchasing decisions the actual merits of the motorcycle not on the people who work at any particular dealership.
It was kind of embarrassing to watch and even listen to a grown man wine on and on about his dealer visit. Man alive, there just has to be other topic's worthy of our time.
    -Peter

I personally would never do business with a dealership like that, period. The reason they follow you around like that is they are desperate for sales. Harley and their dealerships are in trouble, their sales keep dropping, and it really has nothing to do with the bikes, its just the M/C market in general but they haven't figured that out yet.

I bought a victory & Indian from the same stealership and it sucked. The first purchase was ok, but the 2nd they tried to put the screws to me. I stopped that w swiftness & quickness. The sales rep I usually dealt with was gone & I had a complete bonehead that wasn’t prepared and had no knowledge of Indians. Plus it was about an hour till closing. Harley stealership was professional and left me alone until I needed info, and they knew all the info. Some last min pressure when I was going to go look at another bike at a larger stealership (fabricated) I got the price pt I put in my head before walking in. They can keep the 40$ T-shirt and hats tho. The Indian stealership would not give me any price break on any accessories at all. Not a f’n dime, where HD threw in a few things. Idk man I loved all 3 bikes and no regrets about that, but I swore to never go back into the Indian stealership again & I haven’t. Luckily Charlotte Indian is only another half hr down the interstate. It’s all about the owners and how they operate I assume. Doubt I will ever buy new again anyway. My rant is over. Thanks for letting me share

dying to know what dealership ? i'm also from the New England Area and i'm a Retired Harley-Davidson Manager, who like you has become kinda sick of the Corporate owned harley dealers vs the former mom and pop owned dealers. I worked for several new england HD dealers who once were mom & pop owned and bought out by corporation dealers, Easthampton Harley bought out by LEMCO and became Southampton HD, Tibby's refused to sell out and just closed their doors, Kelly's became High Octane, Big Bore became minuteman HD, Boston harley was bought by Bruce Rossmeyer then when he died his kids sold it to the corporation that owns NH's Seacoast, Rochester and Granite state harley, i could keep going but Harley has lost it's SOUL, and after 40 plus years with harley and riding harley's i now own a Goldwing Valkyrie

It definitely felt like walking into a motorcycle food processor. And yes, you do get the idea of the type of dealerships. The reason I haven't named them is, again, all the people were personally very nice. I just don't like the Harley training. Seacoast is awesome, though, which is why I work with them on videos. Great people.

@@NightcruiserMA same here, i love the Staff at the local Harley Dealer, but HATE the management and the high pressure sales, but strictly by the managements rules, i have Tried over the 10 years since i have been back in New England to buy a bike from Rochester and Seacoast, and again love the people but management has caused me to go elsewhere EVERY TIME !! 1st time i had inherited a fairly large sum of money and it had been released, but would have a 14 day hold, but i wanted to buy a fatboy and i went in with all the proof and a phone call to the bank and i would cut them a check and come back and pick up the bike in 14 days when the check cleared, management said NO they needed 20% CASH down, i ended up buying Elsewhere. went back several times over the years and management issues every time kept me from buying from a dealer not 5 miles from my house, went down to seacoast once and i'm a pasted employee or the original seacoast and i know John who i'm told is still part of the ownership, but my wife and i were looking at a low mileage used Ultra and a member of management while we were trying to get a price, pulled our salesman away and gave him to a couple that appeared to be shall we say Wealthier in appearance, needless to say i ended up buying the Honda Goldwing i have now and still to this day never did find out the price of the ultra.

Bud Irwin I'm sure when you're a repeat customer, they don't feel the need to pressure you as much as they feel you're already sort of in their culture to stay. Either way, I'm glad to know not everyone goes through it. I'd have walked out if they weren't interested in my trade.

The bike buying got easier with age but outta the 6 we used 4 different HD dealers & stopped at many more. We seen dealers like your talking about & learned from them. Never let them know your financial matters. Parts & labor bartered to sweeten the deal. They offer 10 percent off for parts, I go for 15 with reduced labor & have it written up on contract. Take the contract with you & spend a couple weeks calling around other dealers & stopping by ones that wanna dicker... We just bought a pair last year off a dealer we never dealt with. They cut the closing cost 4200. under anybody else around. They still made a killing & we rode out happy. Smaller dealers seem more eager to do the dance.
      Anyhow goodluck with your dealings.

I believe there are corporate and independent dealers for Harley. The corporate ones are crazy pushy. Big turn off going into a corporate one and they all look at you with this condensing look if you don't ride a Harley already.

Sorry about the experience. I'm in Ma. I deal with several HD dealers over the years. Most have a reverse attitude, more like if you don't want to buy it fine call me when you do or if you figure it out. There is one however there is one that fits your description. I don't know and don't want to know if it's the same one. As they are not on my list of the first go to dealers and not one that I'll buy a bike from. I would not have chalked it up as a total Harley experience, just a bad experience.

Which dealer was this? I'm in MA and I have never experienced this at any Harley dealer. The number of Indians that you have bought and traded and sold back to the dealer, you must have paid for several of them with the amount of money you've lost on these deals. I came very close to buying an Indian (twice) but I got turned off by them. I'm happy with my RGU and I think I did a pretty good deal when I bought it. I got more for my trade than I thought was possible and I got lifetime maintenance (that's already saved me over $1000 in the first 5 months . . . three services). I liked your channel better when you were just doing positive videos about Indians. The negative vids just aren't appealing.

Fred D Hi Fred. Thanks for the feedback. I'm just relaying my experiences. This one was negative. Because the people were nice but the training or procedures were not ideal (at least from my perspective,) I'm not going to be identifying the dealer, but I can say that there was one in MA even more high pressure than this one. I ordered that maintenance thing but canceled it. Harleys do seem to require more maintenance, so it's probably a good deal. Yeah, I'm very happy with my Indian. I'm glad you're happy with your Harley. That's what it's all about!

      @Freddels1 4 роки тому

@@NightcruiserMA I don't think they require more maintenance. I got the 1k mile service, the 5k, and the 10k service. Other than the regular oil changes, the bike has been flawless.

I tried three Harley dealerships in Toronto and all three had the same approach. High pressure and weren't interested unless you were on the cusp of a deal. The bikes were also packed in like sardines limiting your options to chuck a leg over and get a feel for them.
Even on a Street Glide S that was around $34k CA, the dealer was keen to remind me that it was $34k.
This contrasts MASSIVELY to the Indian dealership in Oakville and in fact is also the same approach from Indian at Mall of Georgia (where I now moved to). Indian Canada and Indian US are far more approachable.
There is no way I am buying a Harley, they are arrogant and I cannot stomach the brand as a consequence of three separate dealership experiences.
I will be buying at least two Indians (for me and my wife) and that's just to start.
