Square duct hanging tip: drop your hanger strap first, measure off floor up to where bottom of duct will be then make a mark on the strap. Cut it off a couple of inches below the mark and bend the strap at the mark. Do the same thing on the other side with another strap to make a "cradle" for the duct to sit on. Do this all the way down the length of the ductwork. Then all you have to do is bang a couple sections together and lift it into the cradle. Screw the straps to the bottom of the duct to secure. Makes throwing ductwork up so freaking fast and looks pro AF
Basements are far from the norm in Tennessee, mainly slabs & crawlspaces .So it’s understandable their expertise & experience is probably limited at best for such installations. Like you said el, make the cradle with hanging straps first and all you have to do is set the ductwork in place, you can even do it by yourself using a dog chain or motorcycle tiedown strap. I’m not so sure he size the duck work properly either, looks like he could have a static pressure problem to me.
I learned this lesson the hard way. Just started my apprenticeship almost 2 weeks ago and the way you’ve just described is a hell of a lot easier and give it a clean secure look!
I to just started my apprenticeship with a quality HVAC contractor like yourself. You sir are very knowledgeable and it’s obvious you love doing what you do! Would have loved to worm under you .
Love that crimper tool! Duct's look good. I would recommend using a hard pipe 90 coming from the package unit and tapping into the main trunk lines. Either that or a square to round fitting would improve air flow
Dude I wish I had that hoist when I was in installed rectangular ductwork. It was all done by me standing on a ladder going and Sention it up every section by section. I love following your channel because you do such clean work as I would do myself. A lot of people think because they’re going to be putting that behind a soffit that it’s out of sight out of mine but the real ones take the time and seal it up and make sure that when it’s out of sight out of mine it’s all sealed up and installed correctly
This video feels like a highlight reel meant for something like Tik Tok, but I would much rather see a more detailed video. Like how did you end up solving that framing issue? how was the duct assembled? How did it go in? What mistakes did your apprentice make? Seeing his errors could be a learning point for all the new guys that come in after him to learn from. What not to do or what to avoid, what can make the job go faster, that sort of thing
A few years ago I was hired to remodel and install kitchen cabinets plus the renos .Before me they had a couple of cabinets installed in the kitchen one cabinet was a pantry just so happens installed the pantry cabinet over the heat vent .The customer had a cold kitchen after the pantry install so to fix the cold room added a electric baseboard heater .I fixed it when I did the renos after that no need for a baseboard the kitchen was comfortable.
I am a master HVACR contractor with 27 years of experience and the other day I did some simple calculations to see how many trucks I would need to have to net as much money as a lawyer(my wife is a retired judge/attorney) and I figured it would take me 100 trucks working 2000 hours a year to make as much money as a lawyer who works 9 to 5.
@@theusername07 you sound like the kind of person who would argue with a person who is a master and has his own trucks. Thankfully I am learning to ignore stupid people.
I know that feeling all too well, In my end it's always the drywall guys who just don't give a damn. They always close up returns and transfers that we mark up, luckily I've never had someone do me as dirty as they did you with that boot.
Nice job Zack, You definitely cleaned up the crappy install that some contractor left a mess, and really liked the drill crimper for the duct, I'm going to shop around maybe get one of those, it definitely speeds up the process, Good job again.
At 3:20 why bubble wrap insulation and not fiberglass? Are FF-100 and FSK interchangeable when used on the reflective part of insulation? What staple gun/staples did you use here?
I need to catch up with new technology. The tape that was used does not need to be covered with mastic? Down here in Charleston, the AHJ requires us to mastic the entire run. Only the boots are left exposed...for now.
Install does look good but definitely needs reduced and would have been nice to see square to rounds on the end of the ductwork instead of tapping into the bottom. As far as the look of the work it looks really good.
@@Salyers-Family-2004 square to rd is a must. Ive seen him use them before kinda surprised he didnt on this job as well. Its clear he doesnt do ductwork on a daily basis but clean work always respectfully
I was wondering why you were insulting your inside duck if it’s in a treated or conditioned space ? Here in Canada you need to have it sealed with tape or mastic but not insulated unless your going through a unconditioned space such as a attic or crawl space . Love the very clean work and explanations your work is outstanding and very inspirational.
Technically and by code you don’t need to wrap in a conditioned space. But by experience with the high humidity in the south your supply duct will sweat in the summer. And if the home owner is going to drywall the ceiling I guarantee your going to have a call back on water marks on all that pretty drywall. Probably wrapped the return to have a consistent look 🤔
At the end you say, "For now..." referring to the round duct attaching to the rectangular at the end. Do you plan/expect to return and change that connection to the package unit? What will you do differently at that point?
There a video from u showing how to make that plenum with metal. From a piece of sheet metal to that. Kinda looked like a 18x25 or something like that I make a lot of plenums, but with ductboard…
Might be a dumb question, but would multiple staples going through the duct cause leakage over time? Are there other ways to install the insulation to the duct without stapling it on?
Is the basement not a conditioned space? You ran a beautiful trunk line before pinching the flex runs at the termination of the trunk leaving little to no room for back pressure. Here in Pittsburgh, taping seams of 8”-24” x 8”-12” is absolutely ridiculous and not code despite some of the tightest regulations outside of California
Good work, but you went through all that work making sure the duct was nice and sealed, but then you just tapped the round flex to the bottom of the duct. It should have a nice square to round transition instead
Yep, especially with the funky connection at the main trunk to equipment! 90 the flex into a dead end shot at the rectangular duct? Come on man! The system probable exceeds ESP before the SA hits the first boot. The rectangular SA ducting running the hallway also should have had transitions to help balance airflow to the boot boxes. Did anyone use a ductulator here?
Zach said "for now" to me that indicates that is what his customer wanted and that later they will have more done. Perhaps when they have a few more dollars that they can dedicate to this job.
that new duct is way too small for that size unit. the static pressure is gonna hurt that system from performing how it could with properly sized ducts, next time use a ductulator.
No mask or saftey glassesfor the kid.. fiberglass is not something to breath in long term. Get him a dead low and use that to do the snaplock. His hands will thank him later in life. Got to teach these kids right or they won't last. Always hang your straps first than put up your duct. Why not have made reducer fittings at the end to be able to put those flex lines straight in? It was a clean job till the end.. yikes.
Good job but i feel like Ducting in the US seems very behind compared to the UK. Saying that tho you’re probably cheaper as you made the duct from scratch where as we would get the duct pre fabricated where its already sealed no need to put tape and sealant all over the pieces. Also we connect duct with 20mm flanged joints rather than what looks like you insert them into eachother
No disrespect but sheet metal is a real skill and not taught well anymore. Bubble wrap has no R valve if there is no air space between the duct and the wrap, you need spacers. That transition from round to square duct is killing air follow. You should have gotten someone to make you (2) square to round fittings. A really tin knocker would have that duct hung by the time you dragged in the lift and set it up and packed it up again.

What’s the formula for measuring insulation for rectangular duct ?

Yep, especially with the funky connection at the main trunk to equipment! 90 the flex into a dead end shot at the rectangular duct? Come on man! The system probable exceeds ESP before the SA hits the first boot.

Hanger
Usually a duct jack
