Inkscape step-by-step beginner, intermediate tutorial demonstrating how to make colorful mandala designs using Live Path Effects of Mirror Symmetry and Rotate Copies. Follow along with Rick Johanson as he walks you through the basics of Inkscape in this free course. This video answers a common question from the previous Mandala Art tutorials on the channel- how to fill in the mandala design with color? The solution was surprisingly simple and easy to add to the design process in the earlier videos. Also, R-4000 makes his first visual appearance on the channel.

📱 What screen recorder am I using?
I use Camtasia to make all my videos. From my experience it's the best screen recorder available, and I like the built in video editor and cursor effects. Check it out here: techsmith.z6rj...

all good thank you very munch
very helpful, thanks!
@natachacandeias4764 thank you!
I love these UA-cam tutorials. Great Job
This is so much fun. I'm duplicating and rotating spiral lines and making cool Spirographs.
Awesome.. thanks for explaining in easy to understand manner
Your tutorials are amazing!!!!! Fallen down this rabbit hole.
Absolutely brilliant! Love your creative approach and the way you simplify the steps! So easy to follow along - and I never mind the refreshers along the way, especially with path effects! Thanks, Rick!
Thanks so much!!
Amazing video!
I've been wanting to design a mandala in Inkscape for a few months now, and was planning on piecing together skills from your various videos in my attempt. That plan had a high activation energy though, which is why I kept putting it off. Thank you so much for this video, now I don't have any more excuses not to do it!
Thanks!! I know what you mean about high activation energy.
Can't thank you enough.... Thank you so much for this video.. I can get cracking on Christmas gifts that will be completely unique.
Thank you! What a wonderful idea! 😊
Thanks for the filled in version tutorial. I'm finding making them very meditative.
Thanks! That makes two of us!
I was curious, how people create these interesting shapes👍Thank you for your time👍
Thanks! These are fun to make. Kind of relaxing too.
Woweee Rick! You make it look so smooth. And great "out of the box thinking" to boot! Thanks for all you do!
Thanks so much! This was a fun one to solve.
Thanks so much for doing this. I've been wondering how to do the color version since I watched your other madala vid. This seems a little complicated to do for me with all the layers but I'm going to give it a shot :) Love your vids.
Thanks so much! The layers are fun but almost like a puzzle. I try to only use a few shapes like in this video to help.
When i see a mandala form but i do not know begin from where , this is problem very difficult in design because we need have ideas and sharpen in tool
Thanks a lot Rick! I did my first mandala design. Your video was helpful
Awesome Rick !! still "Binging on yr vids" Thanks so much
Thanks!! I’ll keep them coming!
That was amazing I am just starting to learn Inkscape and its amazing how good you are at it. Thanks for the Video
Thank you very much! Good luck with Inkscape!
thanks for all you do👍👍
Thank you!!
Thank you! I really appreciate the effort you put into these videos. Keep 'em coming. My bell notifications are turned on! ;o)
Thank you, thank you! And will do!
Nice work sir.
Thanks!!
Hi, thanks for your tutorials. I find having colored mandalas is easier when build it using filled shapes (then, if I want to havea drawing I can fill everything with white).
Totally agree. I like the flexibility too.
Well done Rick, another useful entertaining tutorial 👍I have few questions plz, may I ask which software do you use to record your videos, OBS? Which software do you use to edit your video, olive? and how do you do magnifying in your video? And is the magnifying gets done during recording the video or during editing the video? Thanks heaps
Just saw this. I’m using Camtasia for everything. Plenty of settings that I can adjust to get the live shot simultaneously with the screen recording. The magnification is a drag-and-drop feature added during editing. It’s been great for these tutorial type videos, but it’s has limitations on editing options. I know I need to move on to something more powerful at some point, but Camtasia gets the job done for now.
@@IronEchoDesign thanks Rick for your reply. Is Camtasia free/require monthly or annual subscription/one off payment option? Which software you think is worth the investment for recording & editing ? I’m also looking for option to show the buttons I press (some tutorials they show Ctrl & shift…etc buttons at the bottom left side of the tutorial) so people can follow up visually the steps UA-camr does.
It’s paid software. I bought it off the shelf for a one time purchase. Everything seems to be going to subscription these days, so I’m not sure why pricing options they have these days. Camtasia does do the keystroke annotations. I have used it sparingly so far. Hope this helps!
@@IronEchoDesign thanks again Rick for your reply 👍
Anytime!
Here we go another great tutorial. I have requested a tutorial about making Obama poster in Inkscape if it's possible to do it. Thanks in advance 🎉🎉🎉.
Thanks Jake! You mean like the Obama Hope design. That's a great project. Probably best done with Trace Bitmap for his face and then using masks to create the separation between the red, white, and blue elements. I might be starting a poster design series, and I can include this process if it gets going.
@@IronEchoDesign yeah that's the one, I've tried but as I told you a failed miserably 🤷♂️. Thanks 🙏
@@IronEchoDesign yeah that's the one, I've tried but as I told you a failed miserably 🤷♂️. Thanks 🙏
Interestingly, I don't have the strokes after rotating the triangle even if I have added the stroke (black) in the beginning (when I created the first triangle)? I only see the stroke on the outer contour but not in the intersection of the triangles.
Thank you
you have helped me a lot
Thanks.
Can this technique work in 0.92.3 and or 1.2.2.
[Unsure why 1.3.x is unavailable to me despite my having Windows 11 Home.]
I believe mirror symmetry was found in the side tool bar and not in the path effects yet in that version. I show an example in the original Ultimate Guide to Inkscape on this channel.
is there a way to use inkscape on android tablet? it must be really fun if you can do that😊
Unfortunately so far not. Inkscape can only be used using your PC or laptop
wowww
Haha- thanks!
thanks for the tutorial
Thanks so much!
Hello dear,
Unfortunately, the option "RENDER" in my inkscape have not "Guides creator" :(
I know Inkscape 1.3 alpha is out but when does actual 1.3 come out ?
Great question! I follow some of the developers on social media and I haven't heard about an official release date yet. Actually haven't tried 1.3 yet either. Is it good?
@@IronEchoDesign I haven’t tried 1.3 alpha. My windows laptop will not let me download online. I get my Inkscape from the App Store
@@IronEchoDesign Seems good. The Shape Builder tool opens a wide range of possibilities, making the shape forming faster, getting rid of tons of boolean operations.
Also Geometric Constructions seem a very useful tool do speed up our workflow.
How do you make a mandala based on 5 pointed star? object centers are not aligned to center point of 5 division guides. Hope that makes sense.. ie the center of a 5 pointed star is not the center of the star object.
Why when dragging the design at 3:05 to the center mine just has no color in the center there isn't a fill to it like yours. I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix it.
Edit: Figured it out under the fill option top right above HSL make sure the little heart looking thing is on the solid one on the far right.
Glad it’s solved! Yes that heart icon has an important role. Thanks, and I’ll highlight that next time.
very nice
Thanks!
عمل رائع
why dont i have guide creator under render ?
I'm seeing this question often over the last few days. Sounds like Guides Creator has been moved. I'll look for an alternative.
Just switched to 1.3. Guidea Creator is now under Extensions >> Document >> Guides Creator
Wow! Please do snowflakes!
hey Do you know what is the name of art style of "Kaliber10000"? I like the style and wanna make a short book I already typed an experimental book now just wanna design like Kaliber10000. Can you make a video for it? like It's different assets like backgrounds, Headings, Ui elements, etc for making a book? (And if you can't make tutorial video, please atleast tell me if it is possible to do on Inkscape)
I had to look that up. Is it the retro- looking design community? Kind of like 3D pixel art?
@@IronEchoDesign I don't know but It's ui is "www.cubancouncil.com/uploads/project_images/Kaliber10000__The_Designers_Lunchbox___2.png.648x0_q90_replace_alpha.jpg" this
I am sorry for late reply I was watching this mandala tutorial it's pretty cool. Your every video is Unique and what I loved the most is, That Stamp thing first create any design and dont care about size then draw a rectangle and clip it. That was very helpful.
Cool. I like the pixel, 8bit look. That can definitely be done in Inkscape. I can play around with some ideas. I'm thinking you could use Arrange, snapping, and/ or a grid to keep everything squared off. The ShapeBuilder tool coming in the next Inkscape release will be great for this too.
Thanks!!
Totally unrelated: Since you are a lover of mathematics, do you do origami?
Yes! Not all the time, but I do have a bunch of origami books and origami paper. It’s relaxing and fun to follow the steps.
@@IronEchoDesign It's pure magic. : )
