Idina never took vocal training seriously until she did Wicked that’s why she has better technique post-Elphaba but better vocal quality pre-Elphaba. She’s still a queen though!
Idina's voice pre-Wicked was certainly more likely to make you faint - but her sound now is much more mature and healthier, and just as marvelous, especially live. Though when she sang the end of Defying Gravity at Carnegie Hall she killed it like it was 2004 ha
When she's on, girl is ON. She kind of has a holier than thou attitude about her voice so she gets ahead of herself, which she's admitted to. I still love her.
I love the performance of the Annie song, "Tomorrow".....great rendition. She has really come a long way with her vocals. Very great motivation video. I would like to see more before and after videos in 2018. Thanks!
See, there's moments where she remembers her technique, and then there are moments where she totally reverts back in the after. Like, a lot more spin is happening in some of them, but Let it Go is such a bear, I can't imagine how the hell she recorded the song in the first place lol.
She actually recorded it in a lower key and they edited it to sound higher and more impressive. I wasn't allowed to keep any proof but if you compare her voice in the D23 recording of Let It Go to the movie cut you can tell her voice has been edited.
We had the pleasure of watching and hearing her practice at the Duplex the Sunday before she performed Let it Go at the Oscars. The composer was at the piano. That was a "happy hour" to remember. She ran it 3 or 4 times and the lucky crowd went completely bonkers.
Is not just afther wicked is after Rent to. She always said she begin loosing quality afther rent. She never took training seriously until she sufered the effects post wicked. She has better techinique now but lost range.
I feel like before She took more risks with riffing and all that because her voice was just this ball of raw talent that was pretty unrefined. But let’s face it, Wicked was written for Stephanie J Block’s voice and she was always more of a controlled powerhouse who’s clearly had serious training to back up raw talent.
Zach T it’s interesting you say that though, because your right but when it was designed for Stephanie J Block Defying gravity was a more gentle ballad, however Stephen changed defying gravity when idina was cast instead as he said that it suited idina and her powerful belt, he also did the same with the wizard and I
Gobble 1234 yes there were changes made for Idina (cutting Making Good and replacing it with Wizard and I. And obviously Wizard and I is a better fit story-wise) So I think the role was designed for Stephanie and then tailored and fitted for Idina.
Zach T i it would’ve been interesting to see what idina would’ve been like if her voice had the level of training of a sjb or Willemijn, and how she would’ve sang Defying gravity
five years ago i started a job where i sing daily. i've had to learn better technique as my voice is overused and always tired. the overall quality of my singing is better due to having to learn more technique. i have not lost any of my high notes and they sound better. i've increased my range at the low end. but...my speaking voice is slightly deeper now, and my singing tone is also slightly deeper. my point is...it sounds like *gasp* idina is getting older. just like other humans. :P and she has been using her voice far more often and for more years than i've used mine. stop the hate. have you heard paige o'hara sing lately? you want to talk about a REAL voice change...
Yeah... You have really picked the right nickname... And if you don't know what i mean i suggest you actually google Beethoven and read about his life...
It may be damage due to the strain. It might also be aging as one's voice changes with time. As a teen, I sang mezzo soprano and, yes, I had voice training. Now, in retirement, I'm lucky if I can manage contralto.
Even though she could belt much higher before i actually like her voice Post-Wicked. Her tone and vibrato are way better now and she doesn't sound so screamy. Even if she sings her songs in a lower key her technique and control of her voice is much healthier and better.
Living for the Selena pic. Her voice annoys me a whole lot, I mean, her tone to me is so squicky, I can't. To hear that plus the strain on the first clip, God, I felt my ears giving up on me.
Her voice is still cold, shrill and nasal like it always was with poor intonation. It's just that now, she's lost most of the range she had before. That's the only difference. This woman could never sing properly at all, and Wicked destroyed any ability she had in the first place.
Gobble: Idina has said herself that she never intended to be a Broadway performer, but wanted to be a pop singer. She would have fared much better as a pop singer who doesn't have to belt out power ballads eight times a week, twice on Wednesdays and Saturdays for years on end. She also would have benefited from the auto-tuning and other in-studio enhancements. She never had the technique or stamina to do Broadway, and even she knew that.
lcowles except at art school she earned a bachelors degree in drama so why let her natural acting talent go to waste. Broadway is much more about acting than singing and people forget that there is no point throwing somebody on stage who can sing with perfect technique but has the expression of a wet mop. Idina puts emotion into all her songs and especially into shows which is why she won a Tony for Elphaba and also why she’s so acclaimed for it, better singers maybe but not better actresses. As for the belting, if you can do it why not show it off
How have you never heard of Idina? You've probably at least heard her voice. She was Elsa's voice actor in Frozen and also played a recurring character on Glee.
Oh wait. Ok. I heard the voice of the character in Frozen but never paid any attention to it. Both it and Glee was never my type of show though I hear they were great programs.
Before: Range; After: Control
During elphaba: both
Idina never took vocal training seriously until she did Wicked that’s why she has better technique post-Elphaba but better vocal quality pre-Elphaba. She’s still a queen though!
You hit the nail on the head!
Why should technique kill vocal quality?
Debby chan it doesn’t. Idina’s vocal quality diminished because she lacked technique in her early years
Didn't she go to drama school?
I risk the wrath of vocal experts everywhere, but I prefer her voice after.
Idina's voice pre-Wicked was certainly more likely to make you faint - but her sound now is much more mature and healthier, and just as marvelous, especially live. Though when she sang the end of Defying Gravity at Carnegie Hall she killed it like it was 2004 ha
Both voices are great. You can tell after her voice matured a lot and a lot better trained
Sometimes her belting is like shouting and that’s what I dislike about her voice. Aside from that, she does have lovely singing moments.
somebody actually said it, thank you
A (high) belt is like a controlled yell though..?
but that’s essentially what a high belt is though???
When she's on, girl is ON. She kind of has a holier than thou attitude about her voice so she gets ahead of herself, which she's admitted to. I still love her.
Woah. She was amazing. Her voice is getting back after 10+ years.
I love the performance of the Annie song, "Tomorrow".....great rendition. She has really come a long way with her vocals. Very great motivation video. I would like to see more before and after videos in 2018. Thanks!
Wow she has such a strong voice! If I held a high note for a long time like she did, I should have been choking.
See, there's moments where she remembers her technique, and then there are moments where she totally reverts back in the after. Like, a lot more spin is happening in some of them, but Let it Go is such a bear, I can't imagine how the hell she recorded the song in the first place lol.
Stephen Valentine multiple takes.

she's still great. she is more mature now. love her
Oh MAN I was sold on Idina once I heard her singing in The Wild Party, her vocals were on fire on that cast recording!
I literally watch all of Mister Golightlys videos bc they are golden!!!!
💜💜💜
She's a great singer. I prefer the post Elphaba voice. She has much better technique.
She's gotten so much better.

She's so talented!
I think it is also worth mentioning that in 2009 Idina had a baby, and that kind of hormonal change can have all sorts of effects on a person's voice.
one of the greatest voices ever....amazing
why is this woman so beautiful
In my opinion, the Idina Menzel’s voice is better when she plays Elphaba in Wicked.
five years ago i started a job where i sing daily. i've had to learn better technique as my voice is overused and always tired. the overall quality of my singing is better due to having to learn more technique. i have not lost any of my high notes and they sound better. i've increased my range at the low end. but...my speaking voice is slightly deeper now, and my singing tone is also slightly deeper.

stop the hate.
have you heard paige o'hara sing lately? you want to talk about a REAL voice change...
Her voice is higher and a bit more unstable and after she's more stable and a bit deeper.
lol she still sounds the same. but more matured. dont forget idina was still just a baby in the "before" vids
Yeah... You have really picked the right nickname... And if you don't know what i mean i suggest you actually google Beethoven and read about his life...
ThePopcornia yes im aware im deaf, thanks
But either way, what a voice!
Her voice is 100% made for Broadway!!!
I love your new profilpicture! :) ♡
The run at 0:54 was amazing! Yes ma’am!
1:29 was freaking wonderful!!!!
She struggled a little bit in my opinion but it wasn't horrible
It may be damage due to the strain. It might also be aging as one's voice changes with time. As a teen, I sang mezzo soprano and, yes, I had voice training. Now, in retirement, I'm lucky if I can manage contralto.
Oh my god! I didn’t find out who Idina was until after I saw Wicked on tour in 2008, but it was an entirely different cast!(sad face :( )
Even though she could belt much higher before i actually like her voice Post-Wicked.
Her tone and vibrato are way better now and she doesn't sound so screamy.
Even if she sings her songs in a lower key her technique and control of her voice is much healthier and better.
Idina is what happens when you take on the demands of broadway without broadway training. It’s hell on the voice.
All I want to say is...
U CHANGED UR PROFILE PICTURE!?!?! I LOVE IT♥♥♥♥
Sky G Paige yes! Thanks for noticing it!!
Huge idina fan here who will love her forever no matter what but can someone tell me what the song is at 2:12 ?
Let It Go? LOL!
Mister Golightly lol sorry I meant the one that started at 1:52.
My Strongest Suit
Mister Golightly ok thank you ! Great video btw 😁
Mister Golightly where can I find that live of "Let It Go"? I have never seen it before! :o
I don’t think anyone can sing like that... there both good...I love the bloopers. My friend knows her lol
Her voice is really beautiful and powerful , but she strains it to much
0:37 those pit stains
I feel like she gained more control and was more conscious of technique after
Living for the Selena pic. Her voice annoys me a whole lot, I mean, her tone to me is so squicky, I can't. To hear that plus the strain on the first clip, God, I felt my ears giving up on me.
LOL! Thank you!
What the heck is that second song!?!?!
You do realize , she was much younger then .....right ????
YOU DONT SAY ??!!
So, I have a question. Should I go to Miku Expo 2018 or Fiesta de la Flor? I only have money for one!
You should go to Miku Expo. You live in Corpus so Fiesta de la Flor should be waiting for you next year!
Mister Golightly Thank you so much for the feedback! I wish u could come with me! But u don’t live in the US or Mexico 😭
I'll go to the US hopefully one day!
Mister Golightly I hope so!
Post Wicked Idina ftw
You can here the vocal damage from before and after that is a big difference
1:59
er lower register is so lovely but her upper range she's clearly singing from her nose and throat which has really taken it's toll over the years.
at 2:03 what song is?
My strongest suit
From Aida the ,musical
Damn!
_That's why I prefer Lea Salonga and Sutton Foster_
Love her my dad helped her be the person she is
Tatiana Shaheen and how’s that?
Lisa Turtle before she was all famous my dad helped her with her singing and acting when she was younger
Tatiana Shaheen
Yeah and who is your dad lmao
Tatiana Shaheen
And he didn't do a good job because she messed up her voice
Her belts are just screams
Elphaba screwed her up lets be honest here people
Her voice is still cold, shrill and nasal like it always was with poor intonation. It's just that now, she's lost most of the range she had before. That's the only difference. This woman could never sing properly at all, and Wicked destroyed any ability she had in the first place.
The Bb5 at 0:52 and the falsetto run after it proves you both wrong as well as 2:58-3:19

Gobble 1234 2:21 kind of proves them right though. Although I do like her voice a lot when she's not straining.
We al, get old 🤷♀️ give her a break
Oof let it go was whack
Zoe Chessa I would have chosen a different performance like her Let It Go performance in CMA Country Christmas 2014.
I admit that she earned some great parts but I feel like she’s always screaming at me
So, the same then.
What the heck is 'Elphaba'? And she sound better with it than without it. Her screams are annoying without it. No offense to her.
Sarah Stewart Elphaba is the main character in Wicked. She played her like from 2001 to 2006
😀😀😀😀😀😀😀Sorry but never heard of it or her. I do have one question though; why do she sound so much better in it? Is it her voice?
How have you never heard of Idina? You've probably at least heard her voice. She was Elsa's voice actor in Frozen and also played a recurring character on Glee.
Santi M I never watched either show. There are only certain things I do watch or listen to.
Oh wait. Ok. I heard the voice of the character in Frozen but never paid any attention to it. Both it and Glee was never my type of show though I hear they were great programs.
She sounds drunk in the first one
I'd rather listen to my guts being emptied.
Her technique reminds me of Jessica Simpson which is just horrible.
she yells a lot
🤮
