  • Many of you have asked about the large Chinese cymbal I use to my far right in the recent Jazz Drum Set videos I have been posting.
    Here is a video demonstrating that cymbal and talking about the other the China-Type Ride cymbals I use for playing all forms of Jazz.
    Here are the cymbals and their weights shown in this video:
    Paiste 22” Traditional China with Rivets 2110 grams
    Paiste 20” Traditional China 1652 grams
    Sabian 20” Jack Dejohnette Signature Series China 2317 grams
    Atlas 20” China Cymbal with Rivets 1533 grams
    Wuhan 20” Lion China Cymbal 1442 grams
    The drums are Gretsch Centennials

    That Sabian is unreal!! I honestly love that clangy metallic sound. I'd want to get one of these as a weirder jazz ride.

    Thanks for sharing. I've been obsessing over "china" cymbals since I first saw one back in the mid-70's with the Carmine Appice Realistic Rock book where he had a Paiste 2002 and an original "pre wuhan" china. I was fascinated and have owned many along the way. Love your Paiste Traditional and also the Wuhan. The Atlas was made in the UFIP factory and Charlie Watts of the Stones uses them as crashes to this day. These are all so unique. Thanks again for your insight and sharing.

    I love it! I decided to use only big China on my right instead of a classic ride (even if I play pop/rock) and this video confort my choice.
    Great sound et possibilities.

    Nice job Rick. I love your playing. I loved that first Paiste to. Sweet ride sound. I have an 18" Bosphorus china, but it's to small and thin for riding. Now I know what to look for.

    I've been searching for that illusive sound of Mel Lewis's china ride for years. I have to agree with you on the Zildjian Swish sounding sterile. I have one and it just doesn't breath. I also picked up a Sabian Crescent Jeff Hamilton china that's a little on the heavy side. Next stop...Meinl Byzance Jazz China ride. Heck, I can't stop now. Life's too short! Thanks for the background stories!

      I found myself walking the same path. How’s your experience with the Meinl Byz. China? :)

      To me, Istanbul Agop and Wuhan make the best chinas. Agop for softness and musicality, Wuhan for brutal, weird accents

      Just type in cymbals in the search box on my channel and all kinds of videos will pop up.
      All check out flat rides in the videos as I use those quite often with small groups.

      @@rickdior Yes I know I did it says Paiste Traditional but by the looks of the smallish bell it looks like a Traditional Signature? Just asking because they don't have a china in that line!

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  4 місяці тому

      The original Traditional line had China and Swish cymbals.
      If you search China cymbals on my channel, you will see a video about them.

    Are those SD2 Boleros you’re playing with there?

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  3 роки тому +1

      Thats a custom stick Vic Firth makes for me.
      It has a bolero tip and an sd9 shaft with a longer taper.
