The rivets sound really nice with brushes. Helpful, thorough video, thanks! Is it true that the inventor of the flat ride cymbal won the No-bell prize in Music? I'll show myself out now. ;)
beautiful musicianship and a wonderful kit. I always appreciate a balanced drum kit that's been thoughtfully and carefully put together over time. Interesting to hear how the rivets offset some of the quick decay the paiste flat rides are known for. Glass!
@@rickdior Love Paiste Flat Rides...Had 602, Traditional and 2002 (Black Label)...IMO, the 2002 is best ride I ever played, and I played Flats from Bos/Agop/Mehmet. After all, Paiste 'invented/ the flat. Love your videos, Rick. Thank You!
Man, I own a 22" dark earth, and lemme tell you. It is a beauty. I have stopped buying Dream now because they are so inconsistent, but I've never heard a bad flat earth ride
I came here to her some flat rides, and wound up discovering a fantastic drummer. Your drums and cymbals sound wonderful, but I have a feeling you could make garbage can lids sound good. ;)
7:45: Nice reference to 'Have You Heard' from PMG's 'Letter From Home' album there. I also saw the band in the late '80s with the incredible Paul Wertico and those gorgeous crystal sounding Paiste Flat-rides he played.
These cymbals sound fantastic, and you play them so well! Nobody really talks about how to play a flat ride, so I really appreciate you making this video. I have one flat ride, a Zildjian K Custom Flat Top Ride. It's similar to a 602 Medium Flatride, the one Jack DeJohnette used to play in the 1970s and early 1980s. Do you have any heavier flatrides? Paul Wertico played the 2002 Flatride, Sound Creation Dark Flatride and the Signature Flatride, which were all on the heavier side of medium. Paul also had a 602 Thin Flatride with two rivets. I think the contrast of lighter and heavier flatrides can work well together, particularly if you're in the rare situation where you can play ECM-style jazz.
Hi Rick, great playing, I was wondering where you get the rivets, what type of rivets do you use, also how far in from the edges do you place rivets in general on a cymbal?
I have a large bag of rivets I got from Zildjian many years ago...nothing special, just regular cymbal rivets. I also have some brass rivets I got from Paiste but those are generally too soft and light to use in all but the thinnest of cymbals. As far as where on the cymbal to put them my general rule is anywhere between 1 and 3" from the edge depending on the thickness of the cymbal. If its a swish I put them closer to the edge since the cymbal turns up.
Hey Rick, have you put together any listening playlist of artists on Spotify? When you reference certain grooves/places I often recognise the patterns - but I often don't have a depth of musical context to really understand the language and overall feel in context as my listening is limited in those areas
For those interested, here is a clip of Paul Motian playing what looks like an early 2002 flat ride: ua-cam.com/video/xdrQpEYmhoQ/v-deo.html Thanks for the amazing videos, Rick, especially during the pandemic. They are all always inspiring.
amazing drumming, beautiful sounding kit and cymbals
Wow, I’m not even a drummer, but this was absolutely riveting. Great video!
so i guess you made that pun unintentionally then? xD
The rivets sound really nice with brushes. Helpful, thorough video, thanks!

Love the cymbals but the postings what I come here for. Buttery smooth as always.
Amazing sounds. Absolute top-tier playing! The double riding is like secret special sauce.

Everything about this just sounds incredible!
Rick, you are painting wonderful pictures with your drumming - very creative and tasteful.
Goodness, I love your kit, those drums just sing with the rain of the rivets. Very nice, cheers - jim
That 602 absolutely kills me! I freaking love Paiste forever. :)
Me Too!

Would you do a review of the Dream bliss line? Really great for jazz
You know how there are some days when you sit down at a kit and things just...happen. I feel like Rick was having one of those days.

Once again, Great Stuff, great 4 way coordination.
What a player holy shit

A master at work.

Paul Wertico plays Dream Cymbals now. He's actually playing that 22 flat earth ride as his main ride.
Love my zildjian 22" flat ride

Yeah, a whole video from Rick about choosing and mounting rivets would be great!

I can try but I need an assistant for that. I will talk to my wife.

Hi Tim
That's a great idea. I am pretty slammed right now but I will try to do that as soon as I can.
Thanks
Rick
What kick mic are you using? Amazing sound!
There is no BD mic.
Just a stereo overhead
Sounds fantastic. Not easy to come by a c24!! 😂$$$
What drums are you using in this video. They sound incredible.
Thanks.....Gretsch Centennial
F A N T A S T I C O !!
Damn
Screw the cymbals. I want those drums
I prefer Istanbul Mehmet. Very nice playing!
Those are great flat rides...especially the really thin ones
Become my favorite' instrument, soon.....22 inches .24....inches ...

Thanks for this Sean. I love Paul Motian. He was a wonderful human being as well as a legendary percussionist.
seems like paiste has forgotten how to make a 22inch flat! lol
Today, I'm a trash man.
