    Hi friends!
Today I wanted to share with you the second part of yesterday's tutorial on sketching people.
This time we will PAINT the figures we sketched. It's going to be super fun and simple.
I'm using a very straight forward approache with this one. You want to paint using 2 washes:
    1. Initial wash.
    2. Second wash for darks.
    1. Don't be afraid to use a lot of paint for the first wash.
I know it's usually best to start as light as necessary, but with this exercise you have more freedom (you don't need to take into consideration aerial perspective, or the background of the figures.
Don't be afraid to have some force in your wash. Your control of the consistency will come with time.
    2. The second wash will help bring out the lights, by putting in the darks. This is the fun part where you shade the paopel.
Use a thicker mixture. A good quick tip would be to use complementary colors to shade.
So if my initial wash used Burnt Sienna as skin tone, feel free to shade it with Prussian Blue, or French Ultramarine.
Here is the list of the main paints I use throughout the video (not in particular order):
    1. Burnt Sienna (usually for skin tones).
    2. Perylene Red (to calm down the Burnt Sienna of skin tones).
    3. Ivory Black (for hair, clothing items and deep shadows).
    4. Prussian blue (mainly for clothing items, as well as deep shadows).
    5. New Gamboge (mainly to be mixed with the Prussian Blue and create darker, rich backgrounf washes).
I hope this video is helpful. Feel free to let me know in a comment, and also tell me what else you'd like to see more of in my videos (:
Thank you so much for watching, and I'll see you again tomorrow,
    - Liron

The boy in the white shirt, walking away, with the green background is my favorite. The background really made it work!

Another great video Liron! Congrats! 😍 I thought I watched tall your videos before, but here I am, just finished watching the two part videos on "How to Sketch/Draw People in Pen and Ink" and enjoyed them very, very much! Your videos cover a topic that I really have been looking for quite some time and unfortunately, despite the vast video content on UA-cam, it is not very well covered for "urban sketching" newbies such as myself. 😬 Majority of videos that I found previously were sped up, averaging about 1 to 2 minutes in length, which is definitely not long enough for those who are trying to learn the actual step by step process of drawing/sketching people. It was truly refreshing finding your "real time", narrated videos as well as your pointers, tips and helpful comments! It surely gives me hope and reassurance when you share not just the "how to", but also point to flaws/blunters when they happen, things that you have struggled with or still do, as well as drawing attention to what's important to pay attention to and what not to fret over!!!! Those are the subtleties that make a difference and build confidence in those who are looking to learn the skill. It was funny to read the other comments posted before me and see that just about every one of them asked the same question about the brush you used in the videos that I was planning to ask you myself. 😊
I realize that my comment is already really long, but before I go I would like to mention that I would love to see a video from you that would also cover drawing/sketching people in real life, on location while capturing people's expression, their action movement, gestures, etc. as you normally encounter during a session on location. For myself personally, I do pretty well drawing people from a photograf or other printed media, but am completely terrified when it comes to capture on paper people observed in real life. I have no idea where to even start with that, what to look for , what's important to actually capture and/or what can be ignored. Also, do you finish a sketch on location, or do you wait to put finishing touches later on when you get home? Learnig about the kind of art supplies, accessories you use and love, what do you take with you when sketching on location or traveling would also be nice to find out. Liron, you'd be amazed if you only knew how many questions I truly have... 😃 Actually, i have so many that I've started to write them down so I can keep track of them!!! 😅I'd give anything to be able to talk to you directly!!! ..... Anyway, thank you so much for all the great videos already created and shared and hope you'll continue to add to the collection!!! Your followers count on it! 😊 P.S. Oh, by the way, please let me know if you'd ever consider the idea of talking in person!!! (Really hoping you will 😊)!!!!!!

Thank you so much for the long comment 😊
      1. That's a great (and fun, and challenging) idea for a video. I'll def try and create an on-location, sketching people video (:
      2. I usually finish sketches on-location. On some rare instances I may discover I forgot something, and I'll add it later on.
      3. I'm currently building a system that will also allow me to teach more directly and keep in better touch with followers, so stay tuned (;
I really appreciate the kind comment and support 🙏🙏 Thank you!

Shalom Liron thank you so much for answering my question about what kind of brushes you use. I started painting watercolor at age 60, I am now 76 and I’m still learning. So your videos have inspired me to experiment more and practice more, and not expect myself to paint a perfect picture every time I sit down to paint. You are an excellent teacher! S Rohde

Totally enjoyed this exercise and I will try it. I need to get a watercolor sketchbook so I can experience freedom.
Have you ever tried sketching or painting with your non- dominant hand? I am right handed and will soon have surgery on it but plan to challenge myself to paint or sketch with my left. Just curious.

Oh, thank you so much ^_^
      Happy to hear this.
I am using a Silver Black Velvet brush, round tip (I believe that's how they call the ones that come to a fine tip, but make sure I'm correct on this one), size 8 (and I also have a size 12 one).
It's a great brand that's also very affordable.

I mostly use my Raphael mop, Silver Black Velvet and Princeton (all sizes 12).
Experiment with different types and find the ones you enjoy the most (:
I find that I like softer hair for large washes, and more spring and tip for more accurate details.

These are very good. What do I call something that I can't think of at the moment; but, I do know what it is, if given a prompt or the time to recall it? I call it a "senior moment." Senior as in over 65; not Senior as in what students call themselves after their 4th year of high school.

I want to paint loose watercolor, but ironically, as a beginner I am going inked drawings much better... maybe I will loosen up with time. I have to work on it. I am getting the Elegant Writer in Fine to wet and encourage me to paint things that are inked but will have a looser look. Right now I am dead creatively. I love the loose floral paintings I see all over UA-cam, and I cannot get it at all. I have to draw and paint in tight. We will see what happens with the new watercolor set. I am hoping that they are much more transparent. I am so heavy handed. Also, my brushes!!! HORRIBLE synthetics which do not grab enough water- all pigment! Just a few more days! I am going out to sketch what I see soon. That will likely be quite humbling, LOL!

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan  7 років тому

I get it - I'm usually having a hard time with those floral paintings too!
All this wet in wet is nerve wrecking haha.
I would recommend you try the brushes I use - it's Silver Black Velvet. They are really good, and very affordable from what I remember.
