    Just got the WGEN9500DFc. It seems the only difference is the plug order is swapped with the 14-50 r plug being 1st on the left there by eliminating the annoyance of the 90 degree plug cord hitting the wheel 6:28
    Thanks for the Q&A!

    I run my generator on 90octane ethanol free gasoline that I buy from the Sheetz station. Pricey but worth not using ethanol in any power equipment. Especially on your 2cycle machines.

    Just bought the 9500TFc (tri-fuel). During break-in, once I placed a small load on it (1000-1500w), I noticed it had a pretty good rattle sound that sounded like valve lash to me. Talked to Westinghouse numerous times and sent video. They said their "lead" thought it was a bearing issue. I usually find bad bearings squeal vs. rattle, but ok. So they ship new one and I go thru butt pain of palletizing return. I prepped and started replacement unit and lo and behold I hear a fairly distinguishable rattle when a load is applied. So, since I'm new to portable gens, am I expecting too much? Does this unit (and maybe most generators) make some rattle/clatter when under load? I'd hate to have it fall apart when really needed, which would likely happen right after warranty expires 😮. I adjusted valves on first unit per recommendation of rep (no difference) and am using fresh non-ethanol fuel.

    • @ChallengeTheBuild

      I mean they can be noisy, I would say mine is (sheetmetal rattling and such) Me personally I would say as long as it has the proper amount of oil in it might as well run it hard while under warranty. I'd try and load it up and see what happens. Probably should try an break it while under warranty 🤷‍♂️... I have been running mine for 3-4 years now... Still doing well and since this video I have slightly modified it due to some of the equipment I use and it still fires right up. Good luck with it I hope it doesn't let you down when you need it most..🤙💯👍🇺🇲

    My question is you have it in a little cabinet that you built outside? What about it? Overheating inside there as well as the exhaust? Where is that going. Isn’t that dangerous for overheating or exhaust?

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  8 місяців тому +2

      It is still in the enclosure I built and I haven't had any issues. The enclosure is only three sided and when the unit is running I have the door rolled up so the exhaust and fresh air enter and exit through the front... I probably should install side vents to help improve cross air flow but have not done it yet. Otherwise no issues to report. I will add when it's running I generally only have it running for about 30-60min intervals not a super lengthy run time. When we loose power I do have to pull it out and bring it up closer to the house. Hope this helps.

    Always surprised that in the top ten questions, no one is interested in THD ( Total Harmonic Distortion ) As Greg's Workshop pointed out this unit has a THD of 23% which is considered UNSAFE for sensitive electronic equipment like the electronics in your heat pump, routers, desk top computers , etc. The WGEN12000 is a much better bet with less than 5% THD, if your concerned about sensitive electronics.. I happen to own a WGEN9500 and noticed that out of the box the frequency was set at 63.5HZ no load, and dropped to 61HZ with a 4KW load. Its easily adjustable with the throttle linkage screw, but you won't find any reference to that in the manual.

    • @ChallengeTheBuild

      I will have to look into THD... I use it with my welder which I guess you could consider sensitive electronics? But I have never had any issues... Yet... Thanks for watching and giving us your input...Very helpful...

    Other points of interest:
    Although the Power Head is Regulated, this unit will produce up to 23% THD. ( that is high for sensitive equipment)
    Also, You can start this unit with a Dead Battery, but the battery must still remain connected to the unit while using the Pull Start.

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  11 місяців тому

      I know the automatic choke is very finicky. Using the automatic start feature, if the generator hasn't run for a while it generally won't start up until after the third attempt. As for the "not running well" I would say check/replace the little fuel filter and I know my generator runs a little on the richer side so I replace my sparkplug every 25 ish hours just as a precaution. Hope this helps. 👍

    Regarding the little cubby you have it running in. What are you doing about all that heat?
    I built a quiet box for my generator but found that the temperature would rise quickly to over 130 degrees in just minutes with the one fan I installed which is rated at 1800 cfm. I modified the setup and made that louvered 1800cfm fan blow out instead of in. I removed the cross ventilation elaborate baffle quiet setup I designed and just opened the inlet to about 18 x 20 inches crosscorner to the 1800 cfm fan and actually resorted to a 20 inch boxfan also blowing inward while the louvered fan was blowing out.
    That resulted in temperatures in the mid 90's inside the box on a 75 degree day. I still somehow maintained a 20 decibel drop in quieting even with the large opening for the box fan.
    In the south it gets really hot and I would never run a generator in a quiet enclosure during our 100 plus ambient temperature summer months. Fortunately, we don't get many power issues in the summer which is why I have my generator.
    Another thing is where is your exhaust routed to? I run mine into a 2 inch flex line 25 feet long to keep the CO away from the house.

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  Рік тому +1

      I just run it.. With how I use my generator for the garage it runs for short periods (20-30 minutes) of time throughout the day. Heat has never really been an issue I just leave the front roll up cover open...Same for the exhaust, I thought about running an exhaust extension sorta like you stated but haven't seemed to need to... So far no issues, all I have had to do is replace the spark plug and change the oil for maintenance. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  11 місяців тому

      So in regards to the eco switch I am saying it does not have one because I still have not seen or used it on my particular model. I do know the next model up (15000 watt) has it. The way I understand eco mode is it is basically idle control when there isn't any loading on it. The way I primarily use my generator I wouldn't need idle control, atleast I don't think I would. Hope this helps, thanks for watching 👍

      Check spark too. May be worth just replacing the spark plug. I personally don't think letting it sit for a month is really that long. • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  Рік тому +1

      Thank you. As far as floating neutral that may come into with using a transfer switch, I don't have one in this application because of not having a dedicated service to the garage yet so I have no information regarding that. I was reading in Amazon reviews that there are straight plugged cords but I haven't look because I don't need one and I didn't know at the time that it was going to be as tight. I still haven't had any issues with the cord but it is a little bit of a pain but now that the cord has been on there a while its kind of taken the shape so its not much of a problem.... I just got the same one! It work the first time I started it but now the voltage comes and goes and when the lcd screen does stay on it reads random voltages between 130-160 v. Not 240 like it should! I can’t get ahold of anyone at Westinghouse but after pressing Amazon a few times they gave me a full refund but told me to keep it lol. So now I’m going to try and figure it out myself. I’m thinking voltage regulator.

      Best I can say is read the manual or talk to a licensed electrician. As for the THD mentioned in the comments, I had no idea what THD was until that comment was posted, learn something new everyday. With how I use the generator I don't notice anything out of the ordinary or if there is a way to lower the THD. 🤷‍♂️.

    • @nyteification8801
      @nyteification8801 Рік тому +1

      I was in the same position with THD for their 7500 model. Ended up purchasing a double conversion UPS for my sensitive electronics. This worked better for me as I keep that stuff on a UPS anyway.
      Just to be clear for anyone reading this concerned about their sensitive electronics: If you plug the double conversion UPS into the "unclean" power source (in this case, the generator), you will get clean power out of the UPS. Just be aware that these types of UPS devices are generally a bit more expensive, but IMO totally worth it.

    • @theamaturepro
      @theamaturepro Рік тому +3

      Technically you should because there should only be one bond on a system. With that said, if you're hooking into the main panel that's bonded, it's not necessary because the way it's wired, the electricity gods will never know and can't tell that your generator is also bonded. In the panel, the generator plugs ground and neutral wires go to the same busbar. It's like equating dirt from the front yard to dirt from the back yard. Nobody can tell the difference. If you're hooking into a sub panel for some reason, then yes, defiantly need to convert your generator to a floating neural. I realize that you posted this months ago so it probably doesn't matter anymore, but sharing the little I know helps me, so thank you. lol

    I’ve got one that’s only a few years old and it’s only ran twice. Now it won’t start and run on fuel, but will run on propane. It’s getting fuel and oil is good. Could it be the fuel pump?

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  6 місяців тому

      It's very possible... Depending on whether or not there was old fuel in the carburetor it may have gummed up the fuel bowl and may need to be cleaned along with the jet. Ethanol is a killer for small engines when left to sit for a while... Hopefully you get it straightened out...👍

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  6 місяців тому +1

      Also one thing I noticed with mine it tends to run on the more richer side (more fuel) so just as part of my general maintenance, every time I change the oil I change the spark plug. Cheap insurance for the lige of the generator...

I also use it to run my welders and plasma cutters which all have lcd screens, still no issues. Ive read comments about THD and never experienced any issues, I personally think its sales pitch malarkey but thats just my opinion. Here's a thought, the Hoover damn is basically a generator (hydro electric generator) imagine the THD that creates and it powers cities.. 🤷‍♂️ My thinking could be wrong though... Hope this helps.

      So I have never run mine on propane yet. As far as gasoline I would say just double check the basics, the fuel selector knob on the front control panel also the actual fuel shutoff at the fuel tank. Also just a note, my generator only had about 20 hours on it an I did have to replace the spark plug. I think the automatic choke feature makes the generator run a little on the richer side. I am not sure how it runs on propane so I can't speak on that... Good luck and hope you get it running.

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  Рік тому

      Glad it helped, as for hours on the generator they are low because of how I use it (generally short runs periodically) and it depends on how often I am in my garage. With that said I believe there's a little under 40 hours, with no real issues yet I just changed the oil after a break in period and put a new spark plug in it the generator seems to run rich during startup with the automatic choke feature. Its a solid generator, I absolutely love the remote start feature, can't live with out it now😂. Thanks again for watching and the feedback. 👍🤙

The engine would get hot and I wonder if it is a good idea to enclose it in a small box without adequate ventilation. But maybe I am overthinking and it is not necessary.

    I am trying to find out how to drain the gas for this exact one. Please help

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  4 місяці тому

      I'm not really sure... You might just have to pull the full line off? I do not believe there is a drain on the tank..

    • @albert39520
      @albert39520 4 місяці тому

      Go to the petcock under the tank. Turn the petcock to off. Remove the line where it connects to the petcock side from the carborator. Have a piece of tubing ready to place on the petcock that will reach your gasoline container. When you have connected the line and routed to the receptical, turn the petcock back on and let gas drain.
      Don’t forget to reinstall the line and clear the bowl of the carborator of any gas remaining in the system. Turning the generator on is a good more and letting it run out of whatever is still in the line is good too.

    Does the battery need to stay connected to power?

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  5 місяців тому

      To keep a top charge on it yes.. Otherwise after a few weeks or months it will be dead..

    I have this model. I regret buying it. Followed instructions and started it once a month for first 3 months. Turned pitcock to off let it run dry and killed it. Was gone 3 months for work and went to start it and gas poured out everywhere. Had it worked on and got it back started ran great. Same shut down proceedure. Had a stomach operation and was not to bend over squat or lift anythin g over 10 pounds for 6 weeks. Went out to move when i could 6 weeks after repair and same thing. Fuel overflowing everywher. This was less than 7 months old and under a hour runtime. WOULD NOT GET ANOTHER ONE

      That's unfortunate... Just like cars, lemons do exsist and it sounds like you got one. I have had very good success with this generator, actually we just had a power outage two days ago and was able to run my fridge, sump pump and miscellaneous things for the duration of the outage. Unfortunately you have not had the same success and it happens. Thanks for commenting.

    Will it run without the battery connected. The battery is dead and I need to get charged.

    • @ChallengeTheBuild

      I believe it will, you just have to manually choke it and then pull start it. I'm spoiled with the remote start now and completely forget the manual starting process 😂😂 its terrible I know. Just read the manual, says turn on battery switch (I assume the little toggle switch) manually choke the engine, then use recoil start (manual pull start) to start. Hopefully that helps and works for you. Obviously make sure there is gas in the tank. I tried to start it this week remotely and it didn't start and Ibwas like wtf? well it had ZERO gas in it 🤷‍♂️🙈... Good luck..👍

      Thanks for the quick response. I did not realize that this unit came with its own battery charger. Luckily after searching for it,for just 5 minutes, I found it. So it's charging now so hopefully that helps me get it started. Wish me luck. 🤞

      Awesome. You should be in business now, just let it charge up and then leave it plugged in as a battery tender. Good luck...👍

    Mine keeps tripping the reset button when I plug In my LG refrigerator? Any idea why? Ty

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  5 місяців тому

      Does it happen with anything else? Maybe the initial amp draw is to high (which I doubt) just thinking out loud. I would try plugging in like a circular saw or something similar that has a higher initial amperage draw to see if it does it...Is it the main 40 amp reset breaker or is it a 20 amp thermal breaker? Maybe the breaker is faulty? Just throwing a few ideas out...🤷‍♂️ Good luck...

    • @juliocs5483
      @juliocs5483 5 місяців тому +2

      @@ChallengeTheBuild It’s the 20amp outlets that it keeps tripping. I will try my circular saw and see if it does the same. I was effected by the hurricane near Houston and pretty much lost my food from the fridge. I moved as much as I could to my freezer though. Ty for reaching out 👍🏽

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  5 місяців тому

      Ah.. Hopefully everything is okay and glad you are safe, I believe the 20 amp outlets are on thermal breakers and if so one of them might be no good depending on how old they are or how many cycles they have had. Hopefully you can get it figured out without to much of a hassle.

    • @ChallengeTheBuild
      @ChallengeTheBuild  Рік тому +1

      They seem solid... I don't move the generator around to much, it just stays in its little enclosure for the most part... I think they are approximately a 5 inch solid wheel, mostly plastic... 🤷‍♂️ Hope this helps

    The WGEN12000DF has the same terrible 50 AMP outlet design. However, if you purchase the version with the CO monitor they moved the 50 AMP outlet to the left side of the panel. A much better design! Excellent video, very informative!
