With our current understanding of evolutionary history and our strategy of cladistic naming, if we wanted to have both goldfish and sharks under a single group called "fish", then mammals must also be called fish.

Phylogenetic tree: a branching diagram or "tree" showing the evolutionary relationships among various biological species
Cladogram: a diagram used in cladistics to show relations among organisms
Monophyletic group (or clade): a group of organisms that consists of all the descendants of a common ancestor
Paraphyletic group: all of the descendants of a common ancestor minus one or more monophyletic groups
Similarity trap: people can name different species the same thing, only to find out they aren’t even closely related. We made a video about this phenomana: • The Similarity Trap

I spent a hole day classifying the whole tree of Animalia to the uneven levels I was interested to (depending on clades) for a project. I wrote a Python script to help me with that: I write the name of a clade and all its divisions, then I repeat for each one of those I wanted. From worms to mussels, from shrimps to lions, from spiders to primates, I got a total of 275 entries all organised in a branch up to the 15th level of cladistic division.
The next day, I discover _"Tree of life explorer"..._

In German it's even linguistically correct to (literally translated) say "whale fish" for whale, because they were named before we knew they're mammals.
Nowadays most people stick to "whale" without adding "fish", but in older texts (and that means only about 50 years old!) the expression "whale fish" can still be found regularly.

All of the living reptiles(crocodilians, birds, turtles, rhynchocephalians, and lizards including snakes) form a perfectly valid monophyletic clade without including mammals. All of the living amphibians(frogs, salamanders, and caecilians) also form a perfectly valid clade without including the amniotes(mammals and reptiles). As such, while mammals must be fish in order for the grouping to be valid, mammals do not have to be reptiles or amphibians.

Fun fact! Not all fishes can breathe in water! And this isn't a technicality, either - lungfishes* are obligate air breathers and can actually drown if they're unable to access air in time
*Specifically lungfish of the order Lepidosireniformes. The Australian lungfish, on the other hand, can breathe in both water and air.

The paraphyletic (non-monopyletic) grouping is hardly ever useful, it may work for one feature but when you take the less obvious stuff in the account, the monophyletic grouping makes always much more sense.

There are still some evolutionary similarities we have in common with fully aquatic fish that we would normally only associate with aquatic fish. For one, we retain three of our gill arches that have evolved to be used as the auditory bones within our ears. Go further up the evolutionary tree and you’ll find your (as well as all other jawed vertebrates) mandibular component of the jaw as being a derived gill arch as well, which is still found in agnathan fish like lampreys for instance.

This isn't science. Science requires observation, making a theory, then testing it. ....Evolution was never tested successfully. Every single genetic experiment, you just get different strains of the same creature, be it mice, or cattle, or plants, or e-coli. The Miller Urey experiment produced life-destroying tar, and proved that you could not force amino acids to bind, much less to form a structure more complex than the computer you are using right now.

In English, sharks are part of the cartilaginous fish clade. What is the name of that clade in Portuguese?

    • @KazimirQ7G
      @KazimirQ7G 5 років тому

@@UnPuntoCircular Speaking about technical terms, I do believe this clade is called "peixe" which means fish. There's an article about it in a pop magazine¹, although it's hard to pin-point scientific publication or relevant literature. Perhaps it could be easier if I were involed in this field of knowledge.
I'm relatively educated, so I'm not example of general public, as only 15% of population have a degree².
My point was about the statements at 1:49. I was going with this clade thing, but then he gave an example like "let's pick two animals we currently call fish" which implies what general public consider as fish, and my reaction was like "WTF? Nobody thinks sharks are fish!"
But then I began wondering why he said that. I don't believe narrator made a mistake, I was penchant for some translation and cultural differences as cause of this curious way of thinking.
