- Christmas has come early this year as I unbox my last two big purchases of 2018.
In this video I share my initial impressions of the first Royal Oak I’ve ever owned by my favourite haute horology Swiss brand Audemars Piguet.
I also take a first look at a custom made Marine Classic in 36mm by the legendary and highly underrated German brand Stowa. Join me today in a bit of pre-holiday indulgence and jubilation!

So glad to see a review coming on the stowa 36 with the manual wind movement. Thats my next dream watch. Granted I am in high school but nevertheless absolutely gorgeous
Your dreams are pure class!!! ;-)
I can't wait to review it. I might do it sooner rather than later.
So glad to hear there are young Gentry in high school with such refined and classic taste in watches, it fills me with faith for the future.
Thank so much for the comment, I will pin it in your honor.
Onwards and upwards!
Best regards,
TGV
I very much like the Arabic numerals as well. Both beautiful but very different. And I was pleasantly surprised by the price. With an ETA no less. Is that a price obtainable by mere mortals?
Sounds like you have good taste!
Well I'm here. That should provide sufficient provenance.
The Urban Gentry what do you think about chinese tourbillons like e.g. constantin durmont‘s tourbillon watches? I am planning to get one of them but don‘t want to waste 500$
Would be very cool if u made a video about this topic, because it would definitely be interesting to many people and u never talked about this before as far as i know
Regards from germany
It's so heartwarming to see your happiness while discovering the AP! And the Stowa is truly pure class, perfect watch to gift to someone because of all the personalization and engraving options. Congratulations on both acquisitions!
Thank you so much Tamara, very kind of you to say.
Excellent point about the gift idea, now that is pure class indeed :D
Best regards,
TGV
The intricacy and perfection of the details on one of those is shocking. The screw alignment, the variation in finish in the bracelet, cohesion of the design. They nailed it.
Wow, that Stowa really made an impression on me. Now I want one.
I was PLEASANTLY surprised you went with the quartz. You see many an automatic AP on UA-cam etc and this has really proven that you can get a beautiful luxury piece without the stigma of “having to have” an automatic movement and still get the joy, Nirvana, and the reliability that comes with the brand. BEAUTIFAL piece, I love how thin it is and the Zen dial is lovely.
5 reason why MVMNT IS BETTER THAN AP!!
I need the FB "haha" emoji for this comment.
Mvmnt quality is crap
@@Ninja_S1000RR-R are you literally out of your mind
2 or 3 of the reasons are the 2- or 3- digit difference on the price.
Movement has more heritage than AP 😅
"Sorry I shouldn't be blaspheming"
Moments from you like that are so sweet :)
The Royal Oak is fine, the Stowa is fantastic, but the real porn is the Enterprise - D model.
in my opinion, Royal Oak’s bracket is the star of the show ... glamorous reflection is always on. comes every angle. you won’t be tired of it. Enjoy 😊
I feel sorry for the Stowa! Imagine coming over your house to a party, rolling in shouting here I am! And realising you've arrived two minutes after the AP.
LOL, excellent comment.
Very true, however, as I type this, I am wearing the Stowa and will be doing far more than the AP as it has been assigned a more formal role as the Stowa is more a day to day wearer.
Thank you Dylan, I love the humor.
Best regards,
TGV
@gjaddajg Because a quartz somehow makes it lesser of an AP?
@gjaddajg I can appreciate why he got the quartz. I use a 60s Seiko as a pseudo dress watch and it's kind of a pain having to set the time, date, and day ever time I pick it up
I am absolutely thrilled for you. You are so happy and it's great to see... You have every right to enjoy yourself and no need to apologise for anything...
That Stowa is quite something... So clean and classic with the roman numerals as well... Stunning...
TBH!
Pulchritudinous......awesome word when ever I say that people look at me like I've made it up! You don't hear that very often these days, brilliant well done TGV.
Congrats on your Royal Oak! Truly a masterpiece 😍 being a Quartz, it reminds me of my father's Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust in that Gerlald Genta design.
Thank you,. Yesssss!!! I adore those quartz DJs too, my first Rolex was one in fact. Spot on.
Your father had style.
Best regards,
TGV
OysterQuartz, which I wish they still made, as Rolexes look much, much nicer today than they did during the days of the quartz DJs & DDs, is not a Gerald Genta design.
He made the Rolex Texan, also a Quartz.
Not a big deal though - DJ Oysterquartz is the SHIT
This video makes me so happy because your happiness is genuinely great to see!
I must admit I was a bit disappointed it was a quartz 😂
hahahahaha i see.. me too!.
T I am not hating, just a bit disappointed, I respect people’s choices 😊
It’s still very much the same watch but with ridiculous service costs. You have to disassemble the entire watch to change the battery! I think the battery lasts 2-3 years. Automatic is always the way to go.
Dude you can't do automatic that slim lol, it is either one or the other, and I really think the proportions are amazing!!
J O who is talking about it being slim? 🤔 I am disappointed about it being quartz, I am not talking about it’s size 😊
Watch this for several reasons your enthusiasm for the hobby. The diversity of content even though I’m strictly a dive watch guy you make all watches fun. Enjoy the watch!!
Everyone should have a few quartz watches in their collection for those days when nothing is wound and you're on a tight schedule.
I know. Right? What if your just playing catch with your boy? What if youre playing golf? What if youre riding a motorbike with your wife? G shocks are not for me. I've had 3 and they grow old really fast for me. So a good quartz ia a must.
My UHF Bulova's completely agree with you sir.
Exactly, I actually just ordered a DH 1964 for that very reason
@MrLolmaster101 Not for me. I really dont like them.
I agree, that's why I'm buying a Grand Seiko Quartz next year.
the smile on your face is the one that makes the watch worth it...
I watched this video looking forward to the AP unboxing because I thought, if I ever become rich I'd get it over anything else but now I'm in love with that Stowa!! What a beauty!! I think I'll forget the AP!!
Love the reasoning behind this purchase Tristano. It makes me happy to see how happy this piece make you, we all know the feeling of finally getting a watch we’ve been lusting after. Good stuff. 👍🏻
Personally, I'd just save up for the automatic if it was my holy grail but if YOU like the quartz then that's what matters. If you ever change your mind, you can just flip it and use the money towards the automatic.
It's always funny seeing you with a Sub-C, which is personally my favorite watch but your tastes have definitely evolved and the Sub is a chunky "bigger" watch that you tend to stay away from these days. Maybe that's a good thing for the variety and of course the wonderful memories you have with it.
The Royal Oak really is the perfect size for you. I'm a smaller guy too. It's masculine and dressy. I just bought my first high quality, mechanical watch last month after seeing your video. I'm so happy with my Seiko Alpinist! Perfect stylistic match for me. The Alpinist price has gone up over $50 on Amazon in less than a month since I bought my watch!
Likely an unpopular opinion, but of these two watches I'd pick the Stowa in a heartbeat. The exposed movement, combined with a simple yet elegant white dial just wins me over every time I look at it. The RO is cool, but perhaps not my style.
Wait for it. I absolutely hated the RO for years until I started looking at them seriously. Now I can't stop loving them.
Not as unpopular as you might have thought. I’ve been a Gentry fan for over a year and this one really disappoints. A guy like TGV referring to this a a grail really makes me wonder.
That Stowa is pretty slick though!
Nothing to be ashamed of. I feel the same. But that's the beauty of the hobby. You have lots of different choices.
your face during "the best bezel action ever" priceless love it @theurbangentry and congrats to the AP :3
AP unboxing happens at 8:15 gents ;) Congratulations Tristano on the magnificent purchase, designed to perfection and is undoubtedly one of the greats! Best Wishes
Thank you IDG! :D
Best regards,
TGV
Love your channel too bro
It's a GIRLS watch. Furthermore, where is the haute horology in a QUARTZ? Save up properly and buy a 15400 instead of this thing. POOR choice.
Hahah 33mm quartz watch. You have no idea do you... just heard the name and price (of mechanical) and assumed, you are certainly on the right channel
Love your enthusiasm and how you get carried away sometimes. Best quality watch channel ever.
I think that’s the happiest I’ve seen you in a vid! The grey dial is beautiful.
I think he'll be less pleased when he realises how difficult RO batteries are to change...
What perfect timing, just developed an insatiable lust for that angular design
That royal oak looks amazing on your wrist. I feel that people who judge men wearing smaller watches are snobs. Smaller watches are pure class.
Yes theres nothing wrong with the size, just with the movement
@@nelsonrenecontreras Quartz is better, thinner, lighter.
@@kingboyous thinner and lighter maybe, and better is just your oppinion
I think i spelled opinnion wrong
@@nelsonrenecontreras opinion
I never saw you being so happy before like in this video. Shows how much you love this recent AP purchase
Without the second hand the quartz movement is only a bonus. No servicing that's win win
Absolutely, thank you Wayne,
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Battery replacement is an ordeal requiring a good portion of the watch to be disassembled. And if the movement goes bad (it's an old watch) it rarely can be repaired, instead requiring a new movement. Big $'s!
Matthew Davis just whack a miyota in it
The AP battery change is actually very expensive and difficult
Matthew Davis about a 1000 usd for biard replacement on a pp so this estimate wouldn’t be far off.
The hexagonal "screws" in the Royal Oak are actually bolts that are fastened from the other side. The slot is put in them to make them look like screws and acts as a visual trick.
My boyfriend and I are fans and just freaked out over this. CONGRATS TRISTANO !!!!
Haters gonna hate. Beautiful piece. I think it's a very cool idea to have a luxury quartz timepiece in your collection.
Does absolutely nothing for me. Glad you seem to love it and at the end of the day, that's what matters. I'll predict with almost certainty however, that you will be flipping this thing very soon. I'm SO glad you didn't flip your beautiful sub for this! Great decision.
He's already flipped it 😬
The display back on the Stowa is so handsome, I'd be tempted to wear it upside down.
The small size combined with how thin the Royal Oak is, makes it look a little odd somehow. Does look very feminine. The Stowa was a beauty and the movement was a stunner. Amazing for the money.
It looks very good on his wrist. It's a gorgeous watch. The Stowa is so unimpressive, comparatively.
I think it makes it look sofisticated, I think the marketing of "his and hers" looks has sept too much into peoples contious, but to each to their own.
I have a slim quartz watch like that and it does look feminine compared to my automatics. Only 32mm across and 5.7mm thick, but it's definitely a man's watch. I received it as a door prize at a Seiko company picnic back in the 80s, before men's watches grew to the enormous sizes we see today. Like TGV says, you have to wear a watch before you can decide if you like it or not. I wear suits often and even a tuxedo for special events, so this watch is just right for those occasions. That Royal Oak, however, is a less formal design and could be an every day watch. At least in my opinion!
This guy seems to like watches a wee tad...
So great to see how fulfilled you are, made me feel happy just watching you!
Gratts on a grail acquisition :D
The Royal Oak has never appealed to me, but it certainly looks great on your wrist (the size is basically perfect for you).
kjart I agree. This is the most overrated watch. I don’t understand the appeal of it. It’s just ugly, there are so many other beautiful vintage watches out there, why follow the sheep buying this thing.
I don't get the royal oak appeal either but it's not the only popular model I don't like. Different taste I guess.
So glad someone else said this. I thought it was just me. I just don't get it
The AP RO's only decent thing is the unique bracelet.
I'm constantly amazed by his tiny wrists, but his do fit the smaller watches quite nicely.
RTaeuber Thats how I feel about Rolex. That whole brand never appealed to me. I’ll to an AP RO any day over a Rolex.
The Royal Oak has never really been to my taste, but the joy it’s put on your face is what this hobby is all about so congrats mate! Wear it with pride and don’t worry what anyone else thinks!
Cheers and best regards,
Oli
That’s awesome man congrats my dream watch is an AP royal oak as well
For me that watch would be an everyday watch
Seeing you happy with your new whatch made me happy aswell.
A two hander in quartz makes sense as you don’t have to deal with a ticking second hand. My first “nice” watch was a Tag 2000 quartz - still have it and wear it regularly - especially when I’m doing something that might not be great for a mechanical movement - enjoy the new purchase!
The royal oak is so so so so beautiful.
Congratulations on your new Royal Oak, TGV. What surprises me is how slender the watch is. A beautiful watch. I hope that you choose to keep it and not sell it.
Very enjoyable seeing your joy in this episode.
Congrats! Happy for you, you're so excited, AP will do that to a man.
I’m thinking about getting an AP as well. Very happy for you. You’re a very humble man. You deserve it!
I hate the screws on the bezel of the Royal Oak watch.
AP Royal Oak, my dream watch, great purchase and thanks for the video Tristano, enjoy it to the fullest, you deserve it brother
Didn't have you down as a Royal Oak man. Well done that man, nonetheless. Stowa looks intriguing..
you might be responsible for me putting another hole on my wallet.
Congrats on the Royal Oak. That Stowa is just gorgeous as well.
And the turtleneck is also choice.
11:55 case looks very rounded, appears someone besides AP refinished the case. Hope that was reflected in the price.
ITS A VINTAGE PIECE, 25+ YEARS CONSIDERED IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, HOW ROUNDED WILL WE LOOK IN 25 YEARS :) HOLDS VALUE TOO WHILE YOU ENJOY IT ON THE WRIST
Congratulations on your grail! I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.
Does the RO hang over your wrist? It looks like the bracelet has limited movement and almost acts as an extension of the lugs. Maybe it’s just me haha love your vids and passion btw 👍
Yeah, I thought so too. Maybe it was just because there were too many links in it - let's wait and see how it looks when it's resized. But it did look like the sides of the bracelet could not bend down to actually touch the wrist...
At Around the 15:00 mark, you can look up his sleeve angle and see that the bracelet is circling out wider than the curvature of his wrist.... i don't think that bracelet is very flexible, or at least not for a wrist that narrow.... but if it's snug front-to-back, and it feels comfortable on his wrist... who will care? That is.... Only if it's Comfortable...No watch at ANY price that's uncomfortable to wear, will be enjoyable for long... I Sincerely hope he enjoys it...
I have the same impression. The size and watch looks great, but that would be a draw-back.
I had the same impression but looking at TGV wearing the AP at 1:06 it looks fine.
Yes! I’m getting a new Stowa classic Flieger 40, no date manual wind, for Xmas! (Actually using funds from another watch sale but having the wife wrap it for Xmas without being able to see it). Congrats on your Stowa!
Tgv you say its the last "big" purchase but lord knows its not the last purchase ;) lmao onwards and upwards!
Congratulations to you and seasons greetings. I’ll be getting my first Automatic watch, a Seiko 5 this Christmas. As a child I had 2 watches. A Casio F-91W and a skateboarder fashion watch in my teens as a gift from my mother. I found your channel some months ago and have learned quite a bit more about watches and Horology as a whole. Keep up the good work! :)
Congrats and enjoy it. AP is not my thing but this one is great. Thin and that dial! Cheers.
Congratulations TGV. The Royal Oak looks superb on your wrist! The movement in the Stowa is the perfect size for the 36mm case👌. Looking forward to the G-Shock unboxing.
Regards,
Koen
I don't see why Royal Oak watches are starting at 15K, some are much more. I don't get it. Everything from AP is expensive. I actually like your knives. I used to collect knives. Very cool stuff. I like the Quartz because it is really thin where the automatic is much thicker. I do respect your wide verity of watches. From watching your video I bought a Casio Protrek, I love it, it is huge but it does a nice job predicting the lower pressure systems using the built-in graph. Great watch for the money as many Casio watches you get a lot for the money. I also like Gshocks, you can run over it with a 10-ton truck and it will probably still work.
Scott SJ you can’t see why? People buy Ap for how much it costs. It is a status symbol. Of course it does have value but lets not kid ourselves majority of the people buying Ap is because it is expensive.
Wow! I've never been a fan of the Royal Oak before but that one is stunning and looks so good on you. The size is perfect. Must resist the urge to buy more watches...
Thank you so much Eldritch, life is too short my friend, I say dive in!!!! ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
Very happy for you. It is so evident that you are over the moon with your GRAIL!
My favorite royal oak reference. Super thin awesomeness!
Im in love with this watch, you have such a good taste. Gonna save for the marine 36 cause I cant get it out of my mind.
It looks so good on your wrist! And that bracelet, wow..
this guy singlehandedly got me into watches
The size of the AP is just perfect ..when I tried one several years ago I just couldn't get used to how it sat on my wrist..it never sat flush and was awkward under the cuff..but it's a great piece and enjoy...
I have to say, compared to Seiko "minimalistic" boxes, that Stowa Box + accessories is outstanding even at similar price points
"Sorry I shouldn't blaspheme". Always classy TGV 👌
Congrats Sir I guess Santa came earlier to you this year ;) , this beauftiful watch fits you well. Best greetings from the motherland of Stowa, Germany.
Good for you TGV! Super smart way to go on the AP!
I have the 15400 coming in about a week. Cant wait.
You jammy bugger, enjoy!!!!
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
The Stowa is beautiful! And very thin!! I have a Bulova that measures 5.4mm thick. I love them! As always, GREAT video.
That Stowa is beautiful. Congrats on the AP though!
Very nice AP and a very sensible size choice for the slimmer wrist.
With all of the customization available on the Stowa you would think they could provide a band that fit you
Congratulations on the Royal Oak, Tristano. I know from a video of yours earlier this year that you were really wanting to get one. Truly a classic and classy watch. My favorite AP and certainly a grail of many, many horology enthusiasts. I am truly happy for you TGV. Pure class!!!
never sale your Sub!
Congratulation for the AP great classic design and a Quartz, Quartz is just great and should be regarded as high technology as it is. Quartz is fun.
I feel like this was impatient of TGV. We all know as well as him that he didn't want a quartz AP and he is trying to convince himself its what he wants. It's like buying a Ferrari with a 1.0-litre engine inside... why bother?
agree
Congrats! the Stowa is breath taking.
Congratulation for the watch!!!! Absolutely stunning watch and great video as always
Congratulations Tristano, well deserved 👌
Big congrats TGV on achieving another of your grail watches. Best part is seeing that big smile on your face. There’s no substitute for being happy in life...and you earned it. Enough said my friend.
Well said!
You like the watch, then let the haters hate and the watch snobs scoff. Congratulations on NWD and keep posting the great vids...... and you kept the subby, YAY!
that piguet has been my dream watch for such a long time, one day my friends, one day
For a moment there I was like "Is that a GREEN AP?!!!!"
Congratulations on your royal oak. Perfect size and so thin!. All the off shores are way too big.
Thank you Brian,
I hope you are well and that lovely stove is keeping you warm, I will be in front of mine soon ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry I am indeed thank you. Are you home for Xmas?
Congratulations on the GRAIL!!!!
I saw the exact same AP Royal Oak watch on eBay but it said in the title "Men's/Women's". So your wife can wear it too lol
She does already wear his Rolex alot he said in previous vids, so maybe he had this in mind? Maybe he just wants his collection to himself? Lol
You've got to love a good high end quartz . That's why my first grand SEIKO was a new dial 40 mm quartz . Before I got my snowflake
that stowa is beautiful!
Just shows what a true Gentry you are going for a quartz. Bet thats wrinkled a few noses. Love the AP but wow that Stowa is gorgeous. Your costing me a fortune! Keep it up
That ap looks perfect on your wrist
Glad that you retained your Sub.....Nice to see that your new AP had not cannibalized it 😀
TGV!!!! I LOVE the Royal Oak! My personal grail. In the meantime I had to get an Hublot Classic Fusion 38mm titanium to scratch that Royal Oak itch. So glad to see you got my favorite watch :)
Good video. But AP is one of the most overrated watch brands.
They are not attractive
The jarring design helps keep it from becoming dated. An eye-pleasing design is at risk of becoming plain and boring once people get used to it. And nothing else looks like the Royal Oak which adds to it exclusivity. The Hamilton Ventura and their other 50s electrics are bizarre designs but they attract attention to this day.
Congrats on the AP, Beautiful watch the size is perfect. 😊
That stowa looks brilliant
