Thanks for this video. I always learn something when you make a video! I usually stitch in hand so I have a question. It’s easy to see how to set up the fabric in a hoop when there are no stitches on the fabric. How do you set up the fabric when you have to move the hoop so you don’t crush existing stitches? I’ve heard you shouldn’t leave the hoop on the fabric unless you’re stitching but at some point I guess you’d have to move the fabric. Enjoy your holidays. And thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us!

Thank you for your question, Linda. Just in time before I made today's video!

Great video, thanks. I undid my hoop during the video and mounted it again properly according to the instructions you provided - much better.

The book Letter voor Letter sadly no longer is available. The only way to buy it is second hand, sometimes through specialist antiquarian bookshops, even though the book is not that old. Originally the book was around 40 euro I believe, but remember I could only get yours through a bookseller for almost twice the price? Perhaps if enough people ask for it at the Fries museum, they will print another edition of it?

Hmm... I wondered if I recalled that it had been difficult to get. Thank you for getting mine for me! Well, people will just have to rely on the second hand market. Not that I imagine many people would let a beautiful book like this go!

Thank you Yvette for the video. I was wondering how you handle the excess fabric that is outside the hoop. I find it gets in the way. Currently I use magnetic cable ties but thought you might have some other ideas.

Another great question! I can address this in a future video too. Briefly, I don't really do anything with it! :-) But sometimes I have been known to roll it up to get it out of the way. I don't hold it in place with anything, but I do know that some people use quilting clips to hold it. I have never heard of magnetic cable ties - something I'll need to look into, thanks!

Thank you Yvette. I was taught to stitch ‘in the well’ but I will try your recommendation as it looks much easier to tension the fabric.

Stitching in the well meaning that the inside hoop is above the fabric? You can do it that way too. Sometimes that's advantageous because it means you can finish off threads easier on the back without the hoop getting in the way so much. You would tension the fabric similarly with that method - just up the other way!

@@yvettestanton I was told to do it that way so that my hands touched the back of the fabric and kept the top clean. The fabric lays over my underneath hand.

@@raveyhites7179 Hmm... I touch both the top and underside of the fabric when I'm stitching. Which way the hoop up is would make little difference to that, for me, anyway. I'd prefer to just wash my hands.

@@yvettestanton I agree but I was told that it is the oil from the skin that can leave marks. I will still try your method and see if it does make a difference for me. Thank you again for the video, I am a visual learner and it really helps when I can see how it is done rather than read instructions.

Thanks, I hardly ever use a hoop and I was confused the other day when I got a small one and the wood does indeed only fit together one way! Solidarity from another small(ish) town that's had a rough few years of drought and fire, just on the other side of the world.

Well, I'm glad that I could help clear up some confusion!
Thankfully we haven't had floods, though we have had a mouse plague. :-( And we're trying very hard to keep the pestilence at arm's length.

Hi. Thanks for the video. How do I mount a narrow piece like a cuff in a hoop? The fabric is too small for my small hoop. If I leave a large enough margin of fabric around the cuff, this wastes expensive linen fabric. I wonder if there is a way of adding a fabric extension to the cuff or some other solution. I tried doing the embroidery in the hand but it doesn’t look as good as when I do it in the hoop. By the way this is for feather stitch for a traditional English smock. Hope my question is clear enough...

This is a GREAT question, Teresinha, and a situation that is reasonably common when you're trying to make the most economical use of fabric, or just trying to use up what you have in your stash. I think it warrants a video of its own - thank you for the suggestion. Just quickly, yes, I do add strips of fabric (other fabric) to the edge to make the whole piece large enough to use in my hoop.

Is there a brand name for the hoop you can sit on? I can see where yours would be very handy. Sorry for the picture. My grandson has been on my device.

Yes, there is. The ones I sell (and send anywhere in the world that it is possible to send to at the moment) are Klass and Gessmann. www.vettycreations.com.au/cat.html#hoops
