  • Upscaling is coming to Star Citizen with 3.23! DLSS, FSR and CIG's own TSR solution are in the PTU and in this video I want to explore what the visual differences between them. We'll look at 4K and 1080p and explore the different modes- Quality, Balanced and Performance. We'll save performance testing for when the patch goes to live servers!

    I played Death Stranding at DLSS 4K and then reaiised I could actually run native and still stay above 60. However, it was clear that DLSS 4K looked better. It's like a very good AA solution that actually improves performance over native.

    • @cpt.tombstone
      @cpt.tombstone 25 днів тому +2

      DLSS allows an arbitrary scaling factor to be defined, and you can actually run DLAA in basically any game that supports DLSS 1.9 or older, via either DLSSTweaks or Nvidia Profile Inspector. Or you can run Ultra Quality (77%) instead of Quality (67%) if you want higher quality.

    • @dkindig
      @dkindig 25 днів тому

      I game at 1440p and one of my baselines is that I won't generally run DLSS at all unless I can get a reasonably smooth 60 fps native. I will often run DLAA for the AA and if I can get 60 fps I'll do frame gen as well, avoiding any scaling. 1% lows are generally what kills being able to do this.

    @tenpoundfortytwo If you have "no upscaling" selected in the options, TSR is used at the native resolution. Displayinfo level 4 gives you a readout of the method used. I would much prefer if the upscaling option (Performance / Quality etc) only influenced the render resolution - better yet, make it a slider from 33% to 150% (well, DLSS accepts higher than native input resolutions, I don't think FSR 2, nor XeSS does) and have the method selector determine the algorithm used. So 'No Upscaling' and 'DLSS' would give us DLAA, or 150% scale with DLSS would give use effectively DLDSR 2.25X + DLAA. Right now, even if you have DLSS selected, the No Upscaling option will give you CIG's TSR, which is temporally less stable than DLAA.

    • @AuraMaster_7
      @AuraMaster_7 24 дні тому +1

      This is because TSR is also CIG's own generalized TAA solution when running at 100% resolution. The game doesn't let you turn off TAA, so no upscaling just = TSR TAA.
      Maybe one day we'll have the option to use DLAA.

    Both FSR and DLSS have added a reflection to the teeth of the gears that didn't exist in native. It seems they may prefer to generate a more visually appealing image even though it may not represent the original image. Things such as the hospital sign having a slight flicker inside it was probably the intention of the creator rather than appearing flat.

      Having tried it in Live, I still prefer Native over DLSS at 1080p. It’s not by much, but the overall image is more pleasing to my eyes. The image just looks sharper with more depth where as DLSS looks a bit more blurry/washed out. Maybe it is caused by something else, hard to tell. Anyways, I’ve turned off Vulkan again until multithreading is in. In its current state it doesn’t really improve performance.

    • @ChrisPFuchs
      @ChrisPFuchs 25 днів тому +3

      This is a downside for any temporal upscaler. FSR fizzles during movement, DLSS is a bit blurrier, but more stable. Different versions of DLSS (C, D, E, F) weigh these artifacts differently. C has the least ghosting and smudge, but has the worst temporal stability/antialiasing. D has the best antisliasing, stability, but the most ghosting/smudging. E is the newest version of DLSS which just released with 3.7, which is a better inbetween. For people like you who are sensitive to ghosting/smudging, but are not bothered by aliasing/stability, version C is usually preferred. If you don't need the extra performance from upscaling then Native usually looks the best, although it's a shame CIG only uses TSR for native, as oppossed to an option for FSR 3 or DLAA.

    I've been using DX and Dlss at 50% on 5120 x 1440 with :
    3080 fe (10gb and sitting between 90-99%)
    7950x (sitting between 12-45%)
    64gb ddr5 (50%)
    I also had to set my overall graphics to high instead of very high for the first time.
    Other settings are on max.. bar clouds which are on very high.
    3.23 brought a lot of issues with huge random drops in frames that would see my frames tank to between 10 and 15 fps even in space and lasting sometimes up to 15 minutes until I'd alt f4 and shut down through sheer frustration..
    almost feeling like a memory leak.
    The only way to cure this was to set the overall quality to the next step down, I honestly can't see any difference in visuals but planet side my frames are incredible, it's changed the whole feeling of the game from a janky jerky mess which literally made me feel tired after an hour of being logged in to something which feels fluid and I want to stick and actually play.
    Although not perfect yet, the optimisations this past couple of week have seen me experience parts of the game at triple frame rates planet side and last night I grabbed my highest in space of 240 fps ..... last week during testing my highest ever was 144 ( almost double what I'd get previously ) which I thought was my vsync but it actually wasn't turned on.
    I'm sure they'll figure out ( hope ) these massive drops in frames as they aren't happening in live and this isn't an upscaling issue, something in 3.23 has brought along some gremlins but until then hopefully this helps out any of those that are gpu bound and have similar issues going on.
    Edit - for some reason for changes to truly take effect and cut out the huge sections of frame drops the only way to really fix things was to shut down and restart every time I made changes to dlss and other settings

    CIG only gives you 3 options, but if you do that native DLSS will give you a huge range of resolutions to choose from.
    Even Geforce Experience gives you more options.
    But when you enable native DLSS you can go from 100% resolution down with 5% scaling steps. From 1440p to 1200p 1100p and so on not even starting with 1080p

    DLSS is absolutely amazing. Iv noticed in most games that use it the image quality looks better than native 4k. FSR quality doesnt even look as good as DLSS ballanced from what I see in this video and even TSR seems better than FSR 🤷‍♂Id go as far as to say that NVIS (which works in any game) at 85% also looks like it might be slightly better than FSR, at least from this example. DO an FSR vs NVIS video! 😆

      As he already pointed out, DLSS (without Frame Generation) cannot help with your CPU/RAM bottlenecks. But FG can, since it generates new frames from existing frames, run fully off your graphics card, without being held back by CPU or RAM. Right now SC's DLSS implement doesn't have FG yet, but you can already test it using Lossless Scaling on Steam. It does have some artifacts on UI, but my god it literally doubles your frame rate, making heavily CPU/RAM bottlenecked situations actually playable. Going from 35fps to 60fps makes a massive difference! And it's way more responsive and looks way better than AMD's soap opera solution.

    Curious how cockpit UI element rendering and upscaling will be handled. In games where UI elements are overlayed on top of everything else, you can safely run the game in potato resolution while UI remains at crisp 4K. Here, it's all in-world. At 1080p some ships become nearly unusable, as you can't read the screens without manually zooming in every time.

    This is a beautiful representation of this tech.
    So my monitor is 1440p. If I enable DLSS I am not getting 4k quality on a 1440p screen, is the game then outputting my game to the card at 1080p and then upscaling it to 1440p for my monitor? What does "quality" setting do when enabling DLSS? You mention that 4k native looks worse than DLSS upscaled, which I 100% agree with, but how is this tech actually rendering the game? Is it starting at a lower resolution than what is chosen in the "resolution" line in settings? Would love to see a video explaining how to enable the correct things in the settings menu of SC.

    • @aithemed
      @aithemed 24 дні тому +1

      I think the settings on SC explains it’s by itself , if you’re choosing 4K and DLSS quality it does it whit a percentage if then choosing 2k and DLSS and choose quality it does it whit 67% I think . If your monitor is 1440p will no render at 4k . And doing quality will do less than 2k (your max resolution) but use a resolution between 1080p and 1440p.

    Plus, a minor tip that you should consider changing in your video when doing these comparisons. Your mouse pointer that you were using is almost virtually invisible to the image since it is so tiny and not highlighted that people don't see what you're pointing at when you're trying to talk about something. This is one of the most common mistakes that people do when making a video like this, that they forget what they see on screen is not necessarily what everyone else sees on the screen.

    It's a bit misleading to say FSR is a "software" solution, which is often taken to mean it runs primarily or exclusively on the CPU, friend. FSR runs on general GPU hardware only, as opposed to ML acceleration hardware, but it's still performed primarily by the GPU.
    At any rate, DLSS currently looks best, but I'm not sure CIG has yet fully tuned any of these implementations. Looking forward to FSR 3.1 tho.

      @@MrButuz FSR 2 isn't "driver-based". Think for a second: How could Nvidia and Intel GPUs run FSR 2 if neither Nvidia not Intel puts FSR into their drivers?
      Like I said, FSR 2 runs primarily on the GPU, not unlike DLSS or XeSS.
      And be careful how loosely you define "software-based". A GAME is software, and the CPU is generally responsible for giving instructions to the GPU, but it doesn't follow that the CPU is otherwise involved in PERFORMING all of those instructions.

    There's some weirdness that's going on with beveled, round edges of objects and their resulting highlights. I guess DLSS is applied before any AA and doesn't have an AA pass afterwards compared to the native 4K, which may result in DLSS showing stronger lighting highlights on these edges.
    CIGs AA solution for native might wrongly remove these highlights, or the DLSS upscaling is overambitious and adds highlights where there shouldn't be any.
    Also, on the glass material of the globe thing with the cogs, 4K native shows more reflection details from the material's roughness. Those details get washed out in DLSS and FSR almost completely and are faintly visible with TSR.
    Overall CIG's solution is pretty good I must say.

    • @deRNmEpRrMm
      @deRNmEpRrMm 25 днів тому

      It seems like FSR and TSR doesn't work at upscaling geometry being a transparent material. That's why the cogs in the globe look so low resolution on 1080p compared to DLSS, but also why FSR and TSR retain the transparent material detail better than DLSS.

    I wonder what version of FSR and DLSS they are using. I would suspect these are the first versions, in which FSR really suffered from the visual instability. Im wondering if that was a conscious choice by CIG to promote their own tech, since a good FSR implementation would attract all players regardless of cards (especially older NVidia cards that don't support newer DLSS)
    It would also be interesting to see how they move in the future in relation to ray tracing and the exclusive tech Nvidia uses (which we know CIG hates). The odd thing is that their choice of vulkan excludes for now the use of Frame Generation, which is what makes ray tracing viable in modern hardware.... lets see.
