I'm surprised more people didn't like the Malta, it's been one of my favorite drinks ever since I was a kid. I was friends with a Nigerian girl and they always had Malta stocked up at their house. I've always thought of it more as a kiddy beer rather than soda lol.
I feel like Malta is one of those things you have to drink from an early age to like it, if that makes sense. I've loved malta ever since I was little, yet oddly enough I don't like root beer.. (I didn't grow up in the US though)

How can you not like Victorian lemonade? It's literal LEMONade not the sweet lemonade you Americans have you can actually taste the lemon not like your sweet water you think is lemonade.
To be fair I've never even seen that in the UK. There's loads of nice fizzy drinks here they could have tried like Dandilion and Burdock , Tizer , Irn Bru , Ben shermans Lemonade etc

Tesco carries it and you find in cafes and that where they want to sell the big name stuff and sell this instead

As an Austrian I can`t imagine anyone NOT liking Almdudler. It`s the most perfect taste any soda can have.

ever tasted an american soda? if not: imagine a glass full of sugar with a tablespoon of water and another one of artificial flavouring. If you are accustomed to those things, then you won't like almdudler. Its not sweet enough, and the natural herb flavour has almost no taste compared to the artificial flavourings.
@@anashiedler6926 I tried Mountain Dew and Doctor Pepper once. And youre right. They taste like a package of sugar with some food flavouring dropped into. I do like Ginger Ale though.

Anyways there's different brands and I think it's a Caribbean thing, people usually mix it with milk, but I hate it with milk I just drink it "raw". It tastes like nothing they described it as lmao.

Americans apparently have a different sense of sweetness, Almdudler doesnt really taste sour to me (and I've never heard anyone say it does), here in Austria it is actually quite common to mix it with sparkling water as it is quite sweet!

Why does everyone like Malta?
We've always had it in our house,and my entire family loves it

As I've probably stated previously, malta has beer ingredients (like barley and hops) that some may not like without the alcohol.
Regular varieties can also be on the "heavy" side (can have 200 calories [almost all from carbs, both sugars and starches] per 12oz. bottle), ~ +50-60 than a similarly-sized regular beer or sugar/corn-sweetened soda.
OTOH, "light" varieties have roughly the same 90-100 calories a similarly-sized light beer (as is the case for beer, can't be made now w/o calories) has and are almost as enjoyable as a soda when accompanied by food.
So I can understand not everyone Stateside (and not even all Latinos) want to enjoy malta, but surely is an accessible option for a "different" taste in most Stateside locations.

I have had all of the fentimans flavours of drink which are Victorian lemonade, ginger beer, mandarin and Seville orange jigger, curiosity cola and finally dandelion and burdock. I got them all from a museum close to where I live and it is called beamish museum. It is all about the old Victorian, Tudor and Elizabethan times and I love it.

I did this once, I went to the coco cola factory and their was one room where you could taste sodas from all over the world. I can't be sure but I think I strayey as far as I could from the Japanese booth after looking at the one soda NAME "squid something or other"

As a German that has been to Austria a bunch of times now I can confirm that Almdudler tastes better in Austria than in Germany even though it's the same brand.

OMG Almdudler!!! The stuff of my childhood! We always drank this when we went on ski class with our school. (although they did sell it at home and recently it's popular again). I have to admit we did always mix it with EVERYTHING. If you have 30 kids in a class and you're drinking 10 different kinds of soda ... you have to mix it and maybe add some pepper and salt for extra bleurgh :p

Heh, I'm from the U.S., and I love malta too,....it's....incredibly difficult to find in the states. Bitter, or complex foods are extremely unpopular here. The less you can taste food, the better it tastes, apparently.

I love Malta. It's non-alcoholic and not to mention healthy. My mom hates it due to the taste, but the rest of my family loves it. My dad used to give us this before or after sports because it's an energy supplement. And~~ it tastes even better when it's cold (either refrigerated or with ice...ice dulls the taste though)

The OP suggested the Ribena would have been replacing the Victorian Lemonade as the "English Soda". Victorian Lemonade is just what it sounds like. The fact is, in the UK, the most popular soft drinks, as they are called here, are not English.

You asked what to add to the Malta. I've been told that maltas are drunk with an egg in them as a healthy protein breakfast drink. Some add milk as well. There are a few brands available in the Hispanic Isle at most large grocery stores in the states. Surprisingly, they mostly come from the same brewery in Pennsylvania. Highly malted roasted barley gives the taste. If shipped from Cuba, probably spoiled. Get fresh one from your grocery. It will taste better.
