Watching this made me cry. I was obsessed with the 80's TV series of this as a kid and I've waited so, so long for a high quality game based on Journey to the West. Now here it is many years later. The ending music made me shed tears because that song was played during the credits of the show. So nostalgic.
So i heard about two theories. 1. This story maybe post journey to the west, when wukong and co. ascended to heaven at the end of their journey, they left their mortal bodies (corpses). Wukong's corpse was too powerful and lived on carrying his past sins, wandering the earthly realm, while his godly self lives on in heaven. 2. the second theory I heard is that this is the story of Wukong's doppelganger, because in one of chapters in Journey to the West, Wukong fought a duplicate who was exactly like him in appearance and ability. One of them died and the other continued on the journey, but we dont know who. So this could possibly be the story of finding out who the real Wukong was.
but im bet that the narrator from the start and in the end is actually Sun Wukong. He actually lost his power & immortality after duel with Six Eared Macaque or any other Spiritual/Sacred Monkeys. And we play him in the flashback story. I hope he is. Because i love to play weak Sun Wukong and gain his power & skills back to fight his nemesis and save his master because it will be challenging and fun.
Oh yeah i hope there is another spiritual/sacred monkey in this game rather than just Six Eared Monkey. Long Armed Ape Monkey & Red Bottomed Horse Monkey also must be included.

And for that rumour about Buddha kill real Sun Wukong, i dont agree. Buddha is fair & kind Supreme God. If he want kill Sun Wukong, he will do that when Sun Wukong wreaking havoc on heaven and dont need to prison him with giant mountain for 500 years.

Lok Yi have similar origins like Sun Wukong with that Supergiant mode when born and the weakness is in his tail. Sun Wukong's tail cut by Tienpeng (Zhu Bajie later life) and Lok Yi's tail cut by Sha Wujing.

That i know his name is Liu Er and different from the other serial, he dont just wan to to go west but also want eat holy monk's flesh. Well just Red Bottomed Horse Monkey that never included in any serial tv.
But in the movie sun wu Kong come to protect the monk to copy the dharma.
Apparently the other monkey was one of the four great primates that didn't fit into any of the catagories of the mortal realm, Sun Wukong was one of these primates, and the other Sun Wukong was another primate who could hear all of the world's sounds and had knowledge of literally everything. That's how he could flawlessly replicate Wukong's abilities and power
Actually, it’s believed that the Six Eared Macaque is just a representation of Sun’s impurities. When he kills the six eared macaque in Journey to the West, he is shown be less violent and more composed, closer to enlightenment. When the Jade Emperor wanted to tell them apart because the Six “Eared” Macaque and Wukong looked identical, the mirror used to reveal the demons just showed Sun Wukong. Signifying they are the same person, divided minds who rejoin into one heart at the end of the Journey to the West. Also, many say that Six Eared Macaque and Wukong are brothers and part of the 4 primates mentioned by the Buddha in Journey to the West, but the Buddha also tends to lie in Journey to West. There are no other mentions of the other two primates in the rest of the story.

I also forgot to add that, the Buddha also says the the West Continent is to be the opposite of the South, in a way. He says that the West is ‘safer’ and that in the South, people like doing evil things and let their carnal lusts take over, but thought the Journey, Wukong and the others encounter more trouble with demons on the West than in the South. And Wukong said he lived in the South for 8 years and people weren’t full of evil doing and a lack of self control.
Here‘s some more backgrounds about this game.
This game seems to be based on a classic journal called "the journey to the west". The journal described a story that the monkey king and three other friends escorted the "Monk of Tang" to the world of Buddha, and seek for the "real wisdom". The money king became the "the Buddha of fight and victory" because of his contributions in the journey.
In this video, the old monk mentioned two possible ending for the monkey king: Some people say he became "the Buddha of fight and victory" , while others say someone murdered him and took his place. This may be an important line in the game. This line comes from some old arguments about the novel.
The monkey king has the highest fighting capacity in the team, but he is reckless and don't have any mercy, while the leader of their team--"monk of tang" has wisdom and mercy. So they have some major disagreements. In the first half of the journey, monkey king always disobey the order of "monk of tang", and tried to leave the team.
In the 57th chapter of the journal, another monkey, the Six-ear Macaque wanted to replace the monkey king. The Six-ear Macaque is also very powerful and he transformed to the shape of monkey king Wukong, and on one could tell the difference between the true and the fake monkey king. They fighted each other , but on one can win. At last they came to the buddha (the original and the most powerful one). And the buddha recognized the fake one and killed the six-ear Macaque.
Here comes the problem: The buddha is the only one who can distinguish the fake monkey king, if he killed the true monkey king，either in purpose or by mistake， it would be the fake monkey king who became the "the Buddha of fight and victory". More importantly, he may have the motivation to do that. This journey was originally designed by him. The first aim of journey is to spread the word of him to the Tang dynasty, and the members of this team could gain KPIs and became governors of the buddha-land. (By the way, Buddha is the mentor of the "monk of Tang" ). If the monkey king refuse to follow the order, then he may become a real threat to the buddha-land, especially when he had more power. In this case, it's not bad to replace him with a fake, but submissive monkey,right?
This is kind of a conspiracy theory, which could neither be proved right nor wrong. But they tried to find some indirect evidence in the book. Eg, The monkey king became more submissive after the chapter, and the characteristics of the real monkey king are not likely to change so fast, so the true monkey king must have been replaced, While others say, in that chapter, the Buddha promised to the money king that after the journey, he could become another buddha, which could explain his change of attitude.
Back to the video, we could see the appearance of the money king with his "As-You-Wish Gold-Banded Cudgel". So I guess the player may be another monkey who worship the Monkey king, a previous follower of him, or the soul of the dead monkey king. The player may gradually reveal the myth of the journey and find the true identity of the "the Buddha of fight and victory". Maybe a dark, cruel and soul-like story is waiting to be revealed·····
From my understanding of the original,SixEared and Wukong they were the same monkey,because the title of that chapter is "Two Heart Mess Up The World/one body cannot achieve paramount goal."(*chinese is "二心搅乱大乾坤一体难修真寂灭"idk how other language version translator).and someones thinks "一体" mean "the sames body",but in this chapter hinted several times that the unity of the team is shaken, that there is a conflict between they heart(*especialy monkey and the old monk), And that SixEars not only has the same skills as Wukong, but the name of the weapon is also hinted to be the same weapon("the iron rod weapon follow the heart.""随心铁杆兵")for wukong, and also because he just come no where,so i think the"一体"here mean "one body".
So, if staffs choused this "two hearts and one soul" setting, the protagonist could be Wukong's heart is shaken again, and he just leaves his Buddha body and his another soul to find out the truth. And obviously, the game takes place after the journey is over and the demons are everywhere,so it mean the journey doesn't make the world a better place, which may be the reason why Wukong's heart is shaken and why the game is called "Black Myth".

Actual the dev said in a update that the message “not representative of the final product” mean that the final product will look even better. The dev themselves even made a bullet point of all the flaw in the trailer. We are truly about to witness something great

Your knowledge of the story of Journey to the West impresses me. The little old man in blue is the earth deity. In Chinese mythology, there are many earth deities in charge of only a small location like a local sheriff. They are minor deities with limited powers and will also serve as guides and advisors to higher deities like Wukong with the knowledge of the place that they are in charge of. Most of the time, earth deities are powerless against powerful demons like this one in the game, the wolf demon.
It's really satisfying to see someone who knows the background story of Wu Kong reacting to Wu Kong, as an Asian dude myself who grow up with the story; I really appreciate this video!
to some who don't know, Sun WuKong is a character from a Chinese myth novel 400 years ago called Journey to the West. In the myth, some of his powers include riding clouds, transforming (72 forms), that magical staff he wields can lengthen and shorten, he also hides it in his ears when it's tiny. When he tears off strands of his hair, each strand can turn into a clone of himself. Oh, and let's not forget he can freeze people with words. that's all i remember for the moment. but he's pretty dope!! lots of animes are inspired by him and his story Journey to the West. Like Goku from Dragonball is pretty much WuKong (Goku is WuKong in Japanese), Naruto's shadow clones, the nine-tailed fox, Sandaime's transformation... are all inspired by WuKong.

In the story ‘Journey to the west', Wukong learned transformation skills of 72 species and hair-to-clones from his previous saint master. And his weapon '如意金箍棒 Ru Yi Jin Gu Bang' was the east ocean saint needle which was 6750 kg and could switch from small pin to huge stick and he put it in his ear when not fighting.

So my thoughts on this trailer is what the narrator said "wukong was dead during the journey to the west" now based on that, in the novel wukong and the imposter wukong (6th eared macaque) fought, but couldnt best each other so they went to buddha, where he reveals who the fake is, and the real wu kills him, could that mean in this game, buddha mistakenly chose the real wukong and the imposter kills him? buddha realising his mistake sends the real wu (the golden staff) to stop the fake (us)
Or.. the imposter replaces wukong at some point in the story and gains buddahood (becomes the wukong with the gold armor) and we play as the original getting revenge.
So happy to see someone on UA-cam that really knows about the Monkey King! I strongly recommend the 1986 TV series which you can find on UA-cam. Then you can understand why the BGM （Yun Gong Xun Yin 云宫迅音）at the end of the trailer makes us Chinese cry...

WU KONG can turn into anyone, a man, a girl, an animal, a house, a tree etc...In one chapter, he even trans intoTang Seng.72 transformations does not mean the real numbers, in ancient China, it is a word which refers to "many" or "a lot of".The pig Zhu Bajie only has 36 transformations, it means that his abilities are less then WU KONG's.

Interesting theory
According to the developer official website, they want to tell a black(read: hidden) myth, kind of their alternate take on classic mythology. That is why the old man (monkey?) in the beginning is reminiscing about the fate of Sun Wukong at the end of the Journey of the West. Did he attain enlightenment like it says in the myth? Did he died? Or did it ever happen? He then start to tell his own version of the tale. Think of it as telling alternate take on the myth, like how some of the recent movie/novel tell a story where King Arthur is this Roman general. The dev. also expressed that if this game is successful, they look forward to be able to tell more black myths. And fun fact, the intent of this trailer is actually for this smaller Chinese indie dev. to attract hires to complete the game. They did the pre alpha build that we see here in two years with a team of 15 or so and they are looking to hire 19 more. It was not intent as a traditional reveal (they claim).
From the website, the team made up from a core group of disillusions members from the Tencent team that build Asura, a Chinese MMO base loosely on the Journey of the West. They seem to have a chip on their shoulder and in not too subtle way allude to their original vision got crushed by their big corporate overlords. So they go on and on about, 15 years we hang on to our dreams..., it's going to be single player, with strong story (our story), no DLC at launch, no selling stats improving items...., we are going to only release this game when we as fellow gamers feel that it is good and ready; shouldn't take more than 500 years (you probably remembers that's the length of time Buddha trapped Wukong under a mountain). They even said, "you can even screen cap this promise to remind us down the road." XD
Well obviously you're playing as the six-eared macaque in this demo, and I think the "black myth" may be referring to the conspiracy theory that Wukong was actually replaced by the six-eared macaque.

There're pretty many conspiracies and re-creations of JTW myths system -- including the saga of XuanZang、early version storytellings and his forgotten 4 sisters&brothers, then finally JTW the novel, in it the author Wu Cheng'en mixed them five into one-- the Monkey King aka Sun Wukong/齐天大圣( The Great Sage Equal The Sky ), actually before he wrote the novel, Wukong has been mostly called 通天大圣( The Great Sage Reach The Sky ). These just like are encouraging you to make up your own story for Monkey King cuz the story of stories is interesting enough.
【To understand this game, you have to know this】an over-simplified explain here:
This game is a re-creation of "journey to the west",
and in ancient china myth world which WUKONG lives in, humans can get supernature power to become a "god/神仙".
Practicing Buddhism or Taoism is a way of becoming "god".
Animals can also receive supernature power, and they become "monster/demon/妖怪", not "god".
Here, monster/demon is not always evil, they are just different from humans.
In many stories, the monster can live with humans or even have a marriage with a human.
in those stories, humans are often more evil or stupid or greedy or coward...
The rank or class of this world is roughly like this:
god > monster > human > animal.
This rank is a metaphor of ancient china society, but not enough room to explain it here, knowing the rank is ok.
So monsters want to live in the form of a human, or at least act like a human because they are in the hope of becoming a "god".
WUKONG is a monkey born from a stone who finally become a "god",
he is not a "pure" god(human -> god), he remains some monster/demon characteristics.
This contradiction is the source of many re-creations including this game.
Back to this trailer:
This trailer shows a monk tells a story that happens in a temple relic occupied by a group of monster gangsters.
The giant wolf boss at @ is their leader, he identifies himself as a Taoism priest,
and get a Taoism name "灵虚子" or "灵虚真人"
he has a friend who is a black bear. but not shown in this game.
the minor boss at @ is also a wolf. check his feet, you can see that he is a wolf wearing human cloth,
not a human with a wolf head.
the little potato-like guy at @ is "土地公/local earth god", a kind of minor god.
like a nymph in Greek myth, but not that pretty.
you guys may be confused why there is another monkey king with better weapon and better armor stop us from finishing the boss.
and spend several seconds showing shining gold characters on his stick.
We Chinese guys are quite excited seeing this scene because it gets to the most suspenseful part of the story:
whether the monkey king who finally becomes the god is the real monkey king who born from the stone?
(Is the hero at the end of the journey the same person when he starts the journey?)
(are we still us when we grow up/old ?)
yes, there are multiple monkey kings and multiple explanations.
you can even take them as the "ego", the "id", the "superego" of the monkey king.
but it is best to let the game itself to explain it.
if you look carefully enough,
you will find that the storyteller(at the beginning and end of the trailer) himself is an old "monkey" too.
the floating belt behind him indicating that he is a "god".

I´m like 99% sure that the other "monkey king" you saw is sun wukong, which is just awesome
but im bet that the narrator from the start and in the end is actually Sun Wukong. He actually lost his power & immortality after duel with Six Eared Macaque or any other Spiritual/Sacred Monkeys. And we play him in the flashback story. I hope he is. Because i love to play weak Sun Wukong and gain his power & skills back to fight his nemesis and save his master because it will be challenging and fun.
Oh yeah i hope there is another spiritual/sacred monkey in this game rather than just Six Eared Monkey. Long Armed Ape Monkey & Red Bottomed Horse Monkey also must be included.
• In 1986 serial version part 2: Sun Wukong fight Six Eared Macaque. Fake Sun Wukong have the ability like real Sun Wukong. So hard to beat. And for that rumour about Buddha kill real Sun Wukong, i dont agree. Buddha is fair & kind Supreme God. If he want kill Sun Wukong, he will do that when Sun Wukong wreaking havoc on heaven and dont need to prison him with giant mountain for 500 years.
• In 1996 serial version: Sun Wukong fight Long Armed Ape Monkey who is name "Tumpei/Tong Bei" that can swallow Magic elephant "Tingti". For twice, Sun Wukong easily win but for the thirs time, it is very hard and make Sun Wukong to lose his power and Tumpei replace his place to escort holy monk. Sun Wukong also meet Lok Yi, who is actually Six Eared Macaque. But have different story approach. Lok Yi have similar origins like Sun Wukong with that Supergiant mode when born and the weakness is in his tail. Sun Wukong's tail cut by Tienpeng (Zhu Bajie later life) and Lok Yi's tail cut by Sha Wujing.
• In 2002 serial version: I dont know who the fake Wukong is, Six Eared Macaque, Long Armed Ape Monkey, or Red Bottomed Horse Monkey? That i know his name is Liu Er and different from the other serial, he dont just wan to to go west but also want eat holy monk's flesh. And very different from another seriel, this fake Sun Wukong is very easy to beat.

also you said "dont underestimate me because of my size" in 9:37, and i just laughed because i remembered how sun wukong went on a rampage destroying mountains and the armies of heaven as a giant monkey just because he was being treated like trash in the jade palace (despite being given the hollow title "great sage equal to god"), since then all of the mountain spirits feared sun wukong and cooperated with him at every opportunity just so they can hopefully prevent him from vaporizing their homes, if it wasnt obvious by now wukong was a really mischevious monkey until he gained enlightenment and became the victorious fighting buddha.

Some additions from other perspectives:
In the novel, Sun Wukong and Six-eared Macaque could be explained as two presences of one existence. Sun himself, has another name in novel, 心猿 (heart/spirit ape in literalness), a figurative image of 嗔(a mood of wrath an rebellion), which is considered as a sin in Buddhism. So a conflict between these "egos" might be a theme of game story.
Also, I have another opinion. Note that there are many scenes in video implying a dark side of the world, e.g., statues likely being of devils in Buddhism like yakshas or rakshasas, or the combination of buddhas /bodhisattvas and those devils, the game should be based on one world where the Bodhi ( the doctrine of Buddha) corrupts. Another evidence may suggest the monkey who fights in the video is a new/reborn/spiritually cloned etc. monkey. As the local deity of soil says "Get back, you cannot defeat the wolf by your current ability", using word 道行 referring to "ability" which have a meaning of status of progress, showing us it is likely to control a newbie monkey in the game(or parallelized him and the Monkey King).

Also, I just want to mention, Sun Wukong does not have 72 transformations, he has infinite, only limited by his own imagination, the 72 refers to the celestial power that his shape shifting comes from (I think, it might have been a mistranslation when I was researching some stuff about Wukong for a book I’m planning to write). You can tell he must be able to transform into more than 72 things because throughout JTTW, he transforms into people and creatures that wouldn’t have existed at the time he got his abilities

They did mention about black myth, this is only part one for now. Open world game and all platforms. I’m not too sure when they said open world tho. We have to see when it came out. Right now this company only has 40 people working on this game and it’s been two years and they know their shit. GOW took so many more people and they only have 40 people. They releasing this game out is bc they are looking for people to work for the company and they only want pros. I deeply believe they release this trailer and want funding from PS and XBOX too. Remember the very early enemy he fight? there is a monk who love Monk Tang( Tang Seng)'s cassock, he took the cassock, and burned the whole temple. he got some JING(i guess you know whats jing) friend, cassock, their are balck bear(jing), wolf(jing), snake(jing) .......in the story, Wukong defeat the black bear, and GuanYin Buddha give the bear a same hoop like Wukong's. and took the bear to watch his door. now you fight the wolf, another friend of that thief Monk. the little old guy who talk to you, is the land god, as you know , in this story, every land got 1 land god , he is telling you this temple got burned by that monk.
here i got some info for this game , its a Chinese indie company~ only 30 people~ the reason they pull out the gameplay vid, is they want show people ,they not trying to make money, they really want make a nice game, and they are doing it~ now they really need more people to join them, 30 people is not enough for this kind of game, they got money, they make some money in their mobile game, but they need talent people. also, they said they want make a real wukong game, whatever wukong fight in the book or TV show, he gonna fight in this game. like wukong never defense, he only attack, because he got metallike body, thats why you can't block in this game, you can see he use a shell-like skill to parry, thats represent his metallike body.

It’s a technique called “the 72 transformations” he can basically turned into anything, even a fighting temple (yes you read that right) but he has 72 lives which is funny because he has over 100 layers Of immortality
There is another thing to take into account with his heavenly art of transformation. It is not the literal number of transformations. He has that particular ability is the number of times you have to kill him for him to actually be dead he can transform into way more things than the name suggests

This seems like an interesting dark adaptation of Journey to the West. I'm really looking forward to how the story unfolds. The real monkey king's the one appearing towards the end who's holding the real Jingu staff. I suppose we won't be playing the real Wukong cuz he'd be too OP for any kind of monsters or Gods - no one can beat him except for Buddha..
the boss fight in the video happens at the temple where a black bear yaoguai gang tries to steal Hsuan Tsang‘s cloth. the bear yaoguai burnt down the whole place in the novel. and the old ass NPC said it's has been rebuilt after that fire. so the time should be years after the trip. and the yaoguai gang is made of a bear,a snake and a wolf(the wolf in the video).

I think in that game he cannot turn into a rock but he has the copper head and iron arms mean he cannot be hurt. Like when he cause trouble in heaven when elerlang shen and laozi caught him they bring it to heaven to punished him and stroke him with swords to his head and body but, the swords crack and fell apart. Then with fire non of his single fur are burn. And lighting it did not destroy him. Then lao zi put him in a pot which he make potions. He make fire and put the pot on the fire. Then he put sun wukong in it.49 days later he open the pot then sun wukong came up. Lot and lot of smoke. It did not destroy the monkey. it gave him power. He got (ho yan jin jin) golden ball of fire in his eye.

You do know your shit. My knowledge of journey to the west all came from the 1986 chinese tv series, which i believe is the closest adaption from the book itself. Everything you said is pretty accurate so far. Oh and by the way the ending song to the trailer is from the tv series itself too.

I guess the team just doesn't have much time on translation... so the dialogues are totally in Chinese and the only English subtitles are believed to be not so accurate by some. But I guess they're gonna add English or English subtitles to it if they want to release it on international market :D

In the story "Journey to the West" There was a fake monkey that claims to be Sun Wukong. I wonder if this game is more into that side of the story. In the story, the fake is captured by Buddha, while the real became Victorious Fighting Buddha. However, what I want to know is if the fake is the real vise versa. Someone discuss this with me as I would love to talk to people that understand more about this than the (without disrespect) casual Western audience.

This game is a re-creation of "journey to the west"。
This is a story from the Ming Dynasty novel Journey to the west, but the story itself comes from the real event of Tang Dynasty monk Tang Xuanzang going to ancient Tianzhu to seek Buddhist scriptures.
The story of the game itself is different from the novel and the real history, so it is called "black myth". I hope this will help you understand the background of the game and the Grand View of the universe behind it.
and in ancient china myth world which WUKONG lives in, humans can get supernature power to become a "god/神仙".
Practicing Buddhism or Taoism is a way of becoming "god".
Animals can also receive supernature power, and they become "monster/demon/妖怪", not "god".
Here, monster/demon is not always evil, they are just different from humans.
In many stories, the monster can live with humans or even have a marriage with a human.
in those stories, humans are often more evil or stupid or greedy or coward...
The rank or class of this world is roughly like this:
god > monster > human > animal.
This rank is a metaphor of ancient china society, but not enough room to explain it here, knowing the rank is ok.
So monsters want to live in the form of a human, or at least act like a human because they are in the hope of becoming a "god".
WUKONG is a monkey born from a stone who finally become a "god",
he is not a "pure" god(human -> god), he remains some monster/demon characteristics.
This contradiction is the source of many re-creations including this game.

The giant wolf boss at 7:38 is their leader, he identifies himself as a Taoism priest,
and get a Taoism name "灵虚子" or "灵虚真人"

the minor boss at 2:53 is also a wolf. check his feet, you can see that he is a wolf wearing human cloth,
not a human with a wolf head.

@@perrylee5867 All the details probably not but I can give a vague outline. The whole shapeshifting trick was something that he learned from the same dose monk that he learned his first version of a mortality from. The reason this was taught to him was because the gods under the Jade emperor didn't like the particular kind of a mortality that this particular daoist immortal teaches. Once a year for 3 years, they would attempt to kill anyone who practice this form of a mortality. This shapeshifting trick was something set up as a thing that he learned from his taoist master to be able to not only save son will Kong's hiney but his own since he himself practice this form of immortality. More of the details of how it works is through basic daoist magic that was learned by someone like the magic that you learn to be able to replicate himself using his own hairs and other tricks that he picked up. One of the interesting things about this particular form of shapeshifting though is the number of forms it talks about is not making reference to how many things he can turn into. It makes reference to how many times you would have to actually kill him for him to actually die. They don't go into detail of everything of how it works but from what I have gathered anything he can picture he can become. Although in his case with this particular technique, he suffers from a difficulty that mostune they do in Japanese lore. Hey, many times forgets to shape-shift his tail. As a side note, anything that he becomes it can become just as powerful as. And when he does his multiple technique from pulling off hairs and turning them into multiples of him, his clones can do all of his same tricks as well. So imagine him pulling off 20 hairs and facing Superman. He can then become 21 of Superman or anyone else that he can conceivably picture. Again, some of this is conjecture since it doesn't tell specifically the limits of what he can become but he doesn't have to consume someone to become them. There are several individuals that he has mimicked in the original journey to the west legend that are still alive and kicking, including a point where he mimics Tripitaka to fool some demon and then kicked their butt.
