Three points: 1. Journey to The West the TV series is based on a Ming dynasty novel with the same name, written in roughly 16th century 2. Monkey King’s staff can be turned larger or smaller on command and he usually stores it in his ears. This feature was also reflected in other weapons he acquired in this game apparently. 3. It would be much better if you can read the Chinese subtitles. The werewolf mini boss actually said “ah another monkey” when he saw the character you play as, and the old guy from the ground (a local god that keeps track of what happens in this area) said “(you too) look very much alike”. Also the staff held by the better dressed monkey actually had the name of the actual Monkey King’s staff written on it. So a reasonable interpretation is that the second guy is the Monkey King, and our character and the old narrators are somehow related to him.
Glad you guys at least gave basic background about wukong, I feel like everyone should have watched this before they watched the gameplay. They would be much more impressed how much detail that game has.

Many researchers believe the book is to reflect the political situation in Ming Dynasty that the author was in. In the book, Monkey king was born out of a stone and then became the king of monkeys and then he left the monkeys to study to be a wizard, where he learned how to ride on moving cloud and create clones from his hairs, and then he reunite with monkeys to be the fiercest monster in his area, the emperor of heaven sent troops to arrest him but all being defeated by him and his clones, and then the emperor of the heaven granted him the name “Grand Saint of the Sky” and gave him a job in heaven but he then was punished for bad behaviors., After a long big fight, he literally defeated all gods in heaven except Buddha Ru-lai. He can't even escape from Buddha Ru-lai's hand. Ru-lai suppressed him on the ground and move a mountain on top of him. He was imprisoned to lie under a mountain for 500 years until he met the monk, who gave him the name wukong (meaning to realize the emptiness ), to protect him to the west. He got his stick, the weapon, from the dragon king of the east sea. The stick can change it's length and width by spell.

Because Buddhism believe he is one with universe. Therefore both Buddhism god and taoism god show respect to each other, and often work together. Second is the power structure of chinese mythology. They eventually did capture the monkey through trap, but can’t find any way to kill him. Because he’s so bloody immortal, nothing can hurt him. He eventually break loss again and causing even greater havoc in heaven. Jade emperor finally calls the buddha himself to fix the problems. Buddha being the strongest beings in existence, easily subdue wukong, and trap him under a magical mountain. 500 years later Buddha send a chinese monk name Xuan Zang to retrieve the holy scripture from India. He choose wukong as one of monks body guards. Finally wukong was freed from the prison. But this time he humbly protect the monk in his journey to the west. During the process he starts to respect the monk. Also becoming a more humble and righteous person. He eventually was reworded by the Buddha and become a Buddha himself.

Watching the first few minutes of this video is like watching a kid trying to give a report about a book that they clearly didn't read and are instead trying to read the Monkey King article off of Wikipedia without their teacher noticing.
sadly there are lots of meaning of those character's name lost in translation, eg. the monkey king in the orignal Chinese version there is a Chinese charater means pretty before the monkey king term to discript he is beautiful and powerful monkey so the other monkeys see him as their king, it is one of many titles of WuKong, and the name WuKong there are also some philosophy meaning behide it, the closest simple term I can think of is "to figure out the way to empty your mind by yourself", but it only scratch the surface of mening behide the name WuKong.

There were 4 monkeys, 4 sacred stoned monkeys born from the power of the universe around them, each stone was place at 4 island facing 4 direction: North - South - East - West. Monkey King (or Sun Wukong) is the "Intelligent Stone monkey", you all have heard his story. The one who pretend to be Wukong in the arch story "The real and the fake Monkey King" in the original novel and tv series was the "Six-Eared Macaque" (Possibly the one who stop the main character from killing the Wofl Demon, if you follow the theory which the real Wukong was already dead on the journey to the West, replace by the Six-Eard Macaque). The third is "Red-Bottomed Horse Monkey", the very first monkey who received Buddhahood, way before Journey to the West, way before Wukong. And the last one is the "Long-Armed Ape Monkey", the one who has fallen into the evil path (or the FADED ONE, if you would), only later to be killed by Wukong. Their power are all on pair with each other. Let me tell you something about the Long-Armed Ape Monkey. He was born 1000 years before Journey to the West, at the time of the Investiture of the Gods, being one of the strongest of that time, only later to be killed by one of the gods, sealed him somewhere (Maybe the Abyss? And maybe that's why he was called the Faded One). Now, some of the power of the Long-Armed Ape Monkey included: Transform into a giant primal ape (Which every sacred monkey could also do, it's their primal power), and the second is absorb and transform into the power of whoever he killed (He did it a lot, once was transforming his legs into the legs of a giant elephant beast when fighting with Wukong in the 1998 TVB series). Now, this is my theory about the main character. Sometime after The Journey to the West (Maybe the final year of the 1000 years), the Long-Armed Ape Monkey was resurrected by some mystery power, either to help or to fight the Monkey King. Still a lot to debate, and because we just saw only 13 minutes of it so this is all I can scrap up right now. And one more thing, the old guy who tell the story in the game, he's either older, battle-tired Sun Wukong telling whatever happened in the past, or he is the Red-Bottomed Horse Monkey, the first mokey ever who receive the Buddhahood.

Soulwalker Young well, we have two monkeys in trailer and we know they can’t be both WuKong. Because WuKong’s staff is called “如意金箍棒” which is the one we saw at the end of the real-time footage. There’s also couple of hints we can learn that wolf leader saying “another monkey?” and also Tudigong saying “you do look alike” in the trailer, that’s also part of the reason I think one of them is WuKong and the other one is Six eared macaque.

Buddha being the strongest beings in existence, easily subdue wukong, and trap him under a magical mountain. 500 years later Buddha send a chinese monk name Xuan Zang to retrieve the holy scripture from India. He choose wukong as one of monks body guards. Finally wukong was freed from the prison. But this time he humbly protect the monk in his journey to the west. During the process he starts to respect the monk. Also becoming a more humble and righteous person. He eventually was reworded by the Buddha and become a Buddha himself.

Fun fact, a lot of places shown in this trailer is actually still existing in China. Some of them are ancient artifact, some of them are temples.
sadly there are lots of meaning of those character's name lost in translation, eg. the monkey king in the orignal Chinese version there is a Chinese charater means pretty before the monkey king term to discript he is beautiful and powerful monkey so the other monkeys see him as their king, it is one of many titles of WuKong, and the name WuKong there are also some philosophy meaning behide it, the closest simple term I can think of is "to figure out the way to empty your mind by yourself", but it only scratch the surface of mening behide the name WuKong.

This incredible game adaptation of the legend of the monkey king is an extraordinary legend and metrology
There were 4 monkeys, 4 sacred stoned monkeys born from the power of the universe around them, each stone was place at 4 island facing 4 direction: North - South - East - West. Monkey King (or Sun Wukong) is the "Intelligent Stone monkey", you all have heard his story. The one who pretend to be Wukong in the arch story "The real and the fake Monkey King" in the original novel and tv series was the "Six-Eared Macaque" (Possibly the one who stop the main character from killing the Wofl Demon, if you follow the theory which the real Wukong was already dead on the journey to the West, replace by the Six-Eard Macaque). The third is "Red-Bottomed Horse Monkey", the very first monkey who received Buddhahood, way before Journey to the West, way before Wukong. And the last one is the "Long-Armed Ape Monkey", the one who has fallen into the evil path (or the FADED ONE, if you would), only later to be killed by Wukong. Their power are all on pair with each other.
Let me tell you something about the Long-Armed Ape Monkey. He was born 1000 years before Journey to the West, at the time of the Investiture of the Gods, being one of the strongest of that time, only later to be killed by one of the gods, sealed him somewhere (Maybe the Abyss? And maybe that's why he was called the Faded One). Now, some of the power of the Long-Armed Ape Monkey included: Transform into a giant primal ape (Which every sacred monkey could also do, it's their primal power), and the second is absorb and transform into the power of whoever he killed (He did it a lot, once was transforming his legs into the legs of a giant elephant beast when fighting with Wukong in the 1998 TVB series).
Now, this is my theory about the main character. Sometime after The Journey to the West (Maybe the final year of the 1000 years), the Long-Armed Ape Monkey was resurrected by some mystery power, either to help or to fight the Monkey King. Still a lot to debate, and because we just saw only 13 minutes of it so this is all I can scrap up right now.
And one more thing, the old guy who tell the story in the game, he's either older, battle-tired Sun Wukong telling whatever happened in the past, or he is the Red-Bottomed Horse Monkey, the first mokey ever who receive the Buddhahood.

Soulwalker Young well, we have two monkeys in trailer and we know they can’t be both WuKong. Because WuKong’s staff is called “如意金箍棒” which is the one we saw at the end of the real-time footage. There’s also couple of hints we can learn that wolf leader saying “another monkey?” and also Tudigong saying “you do look alike” in the trailer, that’s also part of the reason I think one of them is WuKong and the other one is Six eared macaque.
