  • This is a DIY inverter generator based on the components for the Harbor Frieght 9500 and DuroMax 9000i inverter generators. The idea is too build something that is super easy to work on while making it easy to change out and overhaul the engines versus throwing the whole thing away and starting over with a new one. Have you seen what these cost? Yeah we can build this for less than half the cost and if you already have a worn out 9500 or 9000i then you can do it for even less. Basically the cost of the replacement engine, some Materials / hardware and some elbow grease.
Although I have a Predator 9500 that is on its last leg, in this tutorial my focus is to build this with as much off the shelf parts as possible. However I will be using the inverter box and the interface from this unit to complete this build. What remains of the 9500 will be salvaged for a second build. There is also another 9500 we have that is in good running order. However I expect its life cycle will end this year as well. So that will make a third unit I will build later this year.
It would be best to find a used Predator 9500 or a Duromax 9000i. So keep an eye out for a good deal on one. However the cost to purchase both the rotor / stator assembly and inverter box new will cost around $650 new. So make sure its a good deal dont spend 650 bucks on a used one just to salvage those parts.

Can you provide a link for the stator and inverter box?

Here is the Inverter Box www.amazon.com/dp/B0B6R3MXVL/?coliid=I11C2PQ6TM6U3Z&colid=Y42IIXJO6BCA&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Building this from scratch completely with out a donor will cost roughly $1300. But that covers the inverter box, rotor / Stator assembly the new engine, the cart, hardware and flanges. Still $1000 bucks in savings.
With a Predator / Duromax donor generator then you are only in it for around $700 ish.
Then once this is built and the time comes to overhaul the engine. You can then either rebuild it or just swap in a new one. In the long haul this will save tons of money. Plus since its parallel capable you can always add on additional units for more power when needed. I parallel our two 9500 units all the time when we need to run all the shop equipment at once.

@@Thrive-Off-Grid Yea just bought a Duromax and I'm interested in being able to parallel them, Plus the extra parts on hand.
Appreciate the response and the links as well.

@@Modified10r If you can confirm the inverter boxes are the same please let me know. I do know that box on Amazon is identical to the Predator 9500. The Duromax 9000i is spec'd a little different so Im not 100% the inverter box are the same.

    Pretty cool.
Dumb question if you are just charging batteries doesn't it make more sense, to run the output through a diode pack, and input the power into a solar MPPT and charge the batteries directly. You get away from extra conversions

Thats what a charger is. I just use our EG4 onboard charger. You are not elimanating anything. if you go through a charger or use a " diode pack" you are still converting AC to DC. Why try to build something that is already available and perfected?

With this unit you dont have to run at a static 1800 rpm. You can run at a lower or higher rpm that you can tune to your load. So more efiecient at low loads and you can get more power when needed by turning engine higher in the power curve.

Not sure what max stator voltage is. And how the inverter totally works...
(And this maybe the key it's not converting to DC voltage from the stator)
But if its AC from stator, convert to DC. inverter takes the DC converts to AC, send that to offgrid inverters to charge the DC batteries....
seems like a lot of converting.
The main advantage is that you can use the generator for other things...
But strictly charging batteries seems removing the inverter in the generator skips some of the converting back and forth.
Jus trying to find more efficiency.....
Either way I like your video's and gasifiers 👍
