Thanks ! Absolutly excellent!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH
I know you can now get Retro versions of that 'Norn Iron' shirt from TOFFS or Score Draw but I don't remember Northern Ireland wearing it,well I was 7 at the time, lol.
Under Revie England were rubbish. The Ron Greenwood years were better.
I was there :) GAWA
Excellent. Pity Best didn't play as he did play against West Germany a few weeks before this.
what was the reason?
just watching this after Englands lucky win against Slovakia today (30/6/2024) - wow. The difference in play from 1977 to today is remarkable. I guess back then, footballers were not on 100grand a week. And it shows!
As Brian Moore stated it was a 'smash and grab' perfomance by England,a draw would of been a fairer result and playing like that against better quality teams would catch them out.The Liverpool players were unavailable for this game due to the European Cup final celebrations but only Keegan was the only certainty to have started. He was admittedly a big player for England but when man to man marked like in the Italy World Cup qualifier in 1976 his influence in the game was eliminated.I know a lot can be said about the England side at this period of time under the Don Revie era but a certain amount of sympathy has to go to him over the near career threatening injury that happened to Colin Bell during his spell with the national team.If you analize the performance of Brian Greenhoff alone in this game he was playing the position of Colin Bell. You can see that he did not have the attacking and scoring ability of Bell.Greenhoff was a decent player but no more than a holding or centre back defender.England around this time did not have an adequate replacement and in fact it has taken nearly fifty years to find a player like him in the name of Jude Bellingham.Yes I agree that a strong defence in any team is important but most games are won by bossing the midfield and creating/scoring goals.England did not have that ability around this time to do that and was a major reason why they did not qualify for the 1976 European Championships and 1978 World Cup.
A pretty drab game which England didn't really deserve to win.The English players may have been good club players but they were never going to win anything internationally.Passing not the greatest in this game from our boys.🤗🐻👍
I was at that game as a 14 year old.Im not and never was a big fan of International football, club for me, but good memories of that day with friends and family most who have past, thanks for putting this on 👍
Many thanks DuckJive. Will enjoy this.
