Your method of disengaging the collar is the best. HOWEVER, it is sooo much easier if you take the off the trim and cut the zip tie off. I kind of scratched up my collar doing it blind. Only thing to note is the ziptie honda uses is a special low profile ziptie.
Sorry to hear about the scratch, I think having a thin enough Allen wrench is key, plus pushing that zip tie down is also critical. It's definitely a finesse move. I personally hate disengaging the plastic clips as I break them often even using the trim clips.
@Silent-TypeR you're good. I knew I could ding it up a bit. It's no big deal to me. But you definitely have the best method by pushing them. The other video I saw recommended prying them off which just isn't the move. Your video was super helpful!
Similar, but not exactly. The clip is about 2cm tall and goes 360* around the bottom collar of the knob. You have to access the clips on each side, from a small access window which is located at what I consider 0*. I will try to take another video that can show more specific details of how the clip looks.
The only useful video I’ve found on this
Glad it helped

The best video on this so far. Straight to the point.
So it's like a c clip that goes around that channel and pinches at that window by the stitching
