Hands in the pockets while trying to kickflip and ollie is a bold move haha. Gotta have your hands out to catch yourself before absolutely eating it one day.
Her backfoot pushes forward instead of straight down like she's about to do a front shove it anytime she tries to do a kickflip
she has no body awareness whatsoever
@@ElDragow For a beginner she's not doing bad at all.
@@eaturdamoatmealIt's about timing, not power. The best advice is to just try it over and over.
@@eaturdamoatmeal The finesse can take years to get. I feel like that's the hard part of skating, e.g., sure you can land a trick, but can you land it with finesse?
@@eaturdamoatmealshe doesn’t need more power. You can kickflip popping like a cm off the ground.
"The ground actually smells pretty good" - the sayings of a woman who's starting to lose it
Its so funny how she tells herself to "ollie" before each atempt. Like she is training herself, soon she will bring out treats for completed atempts xD
RICKY NEEDS TO BRING YOU OUT TO THE BRAILLE WAREHOUSE
the core part of the ollie that's essential to doing a kickflip is the dragging of the front foot. You can cheat kickflips and do them the bad way which i would NEVER recommend , but if you just want to do one to do it that might be the way
Just keep at it, you got this! Most skaters take ages of attempts to land their first kickflip, it's a big jump up from the ollie, but you're on the right track!
Let’s goooo! Much improvement. Keep at it homie. Before you know it you be doing Half cab over crooks down 6 stairs
The guy meant you need to flick your foot diagonally across the bolts to kickflip, meaning your toes leave the board right in the 'pocket' where the board starts curving. So in a way, he was totally right about flicking at the bolts! Second, I would practice ollies first, right now your ollies are mostly relying on the pop, but that is only half of an ollie. Practice sliding your front foot forward during an ollie (right after the pop), this raises the board up further and then levels it out. This is the exact same move as flicking a kickflip, except you slide straight forward and your front foot never leaves the board, but it will help to get the feeling and timing right. Also remember your flicking foot wants to feel loose in the ankle, both with an ollie and kickflip, so you use more the side of the shoe than the bottom.
The sliding motion takes a lot of getting used to. It will take 5 or 6 more streams before the slide up the board starts to feel comfortable
@@z-bow-1Absolutely, although some people learn it quicker than others. It's all about timing, at first you see it as two separate motions, but eventually your brain starts thinking of the whole thing as one smooth move. That is what you want.
But yeah, just practice a lot and you'll get there.
That first Ollie was the cutiest thing ever. The little "eehh". 😂 I'm dying.
I really like that skate park. It's chill. I want one here.
14:17 As an Australian I can confirm that time doesn't just stop at midnight down here. It's currently 86:435615648957pm. Time is an illusion.
Hell yeah Ollie! cool park. good fun stuff is hard! great perseverance🤘thats the stuff
Maya and Lud trying to run before they can walk and quickly realizing haha, I'm respecting the attempts though! Some solid ollies in here for sure.
Some advice from someone who's helped a LOT of new skaters:
Progression imo is: ollie -> moving ollie -> kickflip. Take that how you will; for instance, I think spending an hour learning kick-turns on the transition in that park would help you progress more quickly from ollie to kickflip, as opposed to grinding out the motion of one and then the other (although, you would probably land one eventually).
Another strat is to learn ollies over increasingly difficult barriers (crack in the ground -> stick -> shirt -> skateboard). The better you get at moving, the better you get at moving ollie, the better you'll feel on a board and sooner you'll be able to land a kickflip.
Best of luck and try to have fun :3
get comfortable riding -> ollie -> moving ollie -> anything else.
i learned stationary heelfips before kickflips. i also could pop shuvit quite easily standing still.
while moving its a whole different story. its just something you have to get the feel for, no amount of explanation would help.
Watching Maya doing all this makes me want to get back into skating. Haven't skated since I was like 20
About the ollie, it seems to be just a timing issue. It is too tiring to practice without any support and also more difficult because her balance is not 100%. I would find a flat handrail to use as support and keep practicing until I get a higher ollie. You can later use the same method to practice kickflips. By holding the handrail you can keep your balance and help you not get too tired, meaning more time to practice (repetitions).
Learning in the cold is particularly brutal, props 🫡
skateboarding in winter is a chore. skater from Idaho. we just had a foot of snow
dude you got this!! Always warm up a sesh with what know and build from there. work on ollies while rolling forward. It took me weeks to ollie and months to get my first kickflip and you got ollies down quick. keep at it. keep your hands out dude!!! Safety 1st
You are doing an amazing job mate hope you land it, you are out there trying doesn’t matter if you land it first as long as you land it. Take the advice from Ricky on skating and try ignore the chat sending you bad advice and bad vibes. The amount of people out there impressed with how much you have improved is staggering they are the people you need to listen to. Hope you land it first😂
Maya Higa Pro Skater coming soon to PS5 and Windows
Maya in the baby swing just...felt...right. 😂
THAT SIGN AT 9:35 HAS A GOOD BAR TO HOLD ON TO JUST SAYING
Keep at it you got it!!!
i can't believe ludwig did that to you queen /j
you got this!
Learning to skateboard is probably the hardest thing I've ever done and I still suck at it after years.
Damn she got ollie down pretty quick. Advice I would give is learn them moving next, even if slowly.
Big mistake kids make is learning everything stationary and then get held back in skating because they're not comfortable flowing on the board.
The baby swing 😂
Back wheel needs to leave the ground before the backfoot jumps and frontfoot starts flattening out the board. For Ollie keeping frontfoot on and in the centre of the board. For Kickflip, it simply drags and flicks out the top right corner of the board.
I believe in you maya !
People always talk about the physical trauma from skating but the mental trauma is worse.
you're doing fine. :) keep playing with it and riding it more.. itll get you more comfortable on the board.
She rides goofy and Ollie's reg, its a weird situation imo
DONT GIVE UP!
Took me three months straight to get my first kickflip and other people take 1 day its different for everyone. You got it.
It's wild how confidently wrong chat can be. She's literally doing what a professional told her to do
Her attempts are actually decent. If she keeps practicing she should get one!
I think if you put the toes of your back foot more on the edge tail it should prevent it from going backward like a front shuv it
For the flick you were right, just try to practice flicking off of that pocket of the board. Play with the timing with the flick. Try to land the kickflip with one foot first just to get the feeling/timing down. Holding on to a fence is good if you want some stability.
Last tip would be to try to keep your body and board centered before you pop your skateboard it will make it easier to flip. Also, keep your shoulders parallel to your skateboard so it doesn’t turn.
the hardest thing about skateboarding is the first few months. If you try hard enough it does get better.
the ollie is getting very good for a beginner, some people have an easier time doing heelflips over kickflips. same idea just flipping off the toe side of your board. just getting your confidence up and riding around will make you better but its definitely a brutal thing to undertake.
"Are there people around here?"
Somebody said Steven hawking has a better chance of landing a kickflip and I almost threw up
After finding that nut and in the distance sirens of emergency services could be heard.
Chat: "There is a nut on the loose!"
when i was learning 360 flips i would kick myself awake almost every night trying to workout how that trick worked..it was a pretty neat mussell memory twitch
Took me like 4 months to learn to kickflip and that was after i was oretty good at ollies.
Very good
Varial kick flips are honestly a lot easier than regular kickflips
The best way ive heard anyone teach a kickflip.
Practice doing the ollie and then stepping off with the back foot and letting the front foot get used to the flick.
After you can flick it and catch it with the front foot its just a matter of not stepping off anymore.
you can do it! hahaha it was fun.
I'll tell you what though. She's got balls. Skating hurts. Most people take a few serious slams and they are out. I used to skate from like 13-19 and I stayed perpetually wounded. Anyhoozle, everyone is different, but I found that ollies/kickflips/everything were so much easier if you are rolling. Standstill tricks were always much harder, especially until you have em down. Do a little slow roll and then try "x" trick. As you get more comfortable and consistent, crank that speed up.
Go .25 speed at 15:52 and it's damn near a kick flip if it was higher.
What kind of trucks do you have?
Collab with Braille already, they'll teach you how to kickflip in a day. Having someone who actually knows how to skate there with you will change everything
I skated for 18 years now and still cant get my feet to kickflip half the time. I feel her pain.
i've bee skating for 10+ years and i learned a kickflip in like less than a week while practicing max 1 hour a day
@@ElDragowwow
People need to realize skateboarding you just won’t pick it up and do it. That’s why it feels so good when you finally land some thing.
this. i've been skating for 21 years and i think people just dont get how difficult it is to learn, let alone be good at. when it looks easy for someone, there is likely an entire childhood of almost daily skating behind it.
@@Saiyamanmc i've started 2 years ago and im 23 now, and i've been really going for kickflips the past few weeks, and it can take days to actually get the feeling for a trick.
i think people see 'i learned kickflips in a week' and think its simple, but even in those videos they just land it once stationary.
i have only just managed one out of a bank.
@@Saiyamanmcyea and I feel like skateboarding is so under appreciated by the general public, people who don’t skate will see someone do a kickflip and it’s just not impressive to them at all because it just looks like a simple easy trick and they are completely unaware of how challenging it actually is. Only people who have actually spent some time trying to skate have appreciation for it and are impressed by those who do it because they know how difficult it actually is.
just skate around dont worry about tricks
She’s not jumping up enough with her back foot to get any drag from the front😂
her back foot height is fine. the issue with her front foot is she is supposed to drag it at an upward/diagonal motion rather than just straight horizontal, that's why she's not able to drag it. It feels very weird for a beginner to try and drag it, so to get past that barrier drag it upward/diagonal while the foot is slightly bent of course
Try changing the angle of your back foot so that the toe of your back foot is pointed slightly forward. That should help with the board rotating behind you.
I fucking believe
the biggest thing ive noticed in this little kickflip saga is whoever gripped mayas board put the grizzly bear backwards, keeps throwing me cause i end up thinking mayas got her board flipped by accident lol
Blame Flip and/or Hondo.
I think its placed right, she unfortunately uses the nose to pop ?
@@Waffleisskating that is why you go twin for your first board if you are just starting. Makes it soo much easier and hassle free later on.
you are correct@@Waffleisskating
@@sr7olsniper but they're like twice as expensive or just rare to find. so still not totally ideal for beginners
when they said flick out from the bolts i think they meant to flick out of the pocket, you got ricky for tips im sure youll figure out the stance in no time 👍 also yes keep up the ollie training and ride around to get really really comfortable holding your central axis and a straight back, when you go to pop its like a compressing a horse stance similar to an asian squat technique.
ur doing it :)
skate 10 min nap.. skate 10 min nap this shits funny
i think back foot is too behind her so it's like pressure flipping
You can do it IT just takes practice 😊
nice
Ten fucking pounds of riser pads
IT'S CALLED LAVA OKAY
Looks like the leander skatepark. Super chill place to learn.
Is this before or after the video from Rickey? If it is after why not review the video while attempting to do this?
You can do it.
Bruh daily is brutal 😂 or this is the same day yeah
There's an infamous video of a young woman having to be cut out of one of those swings by firemen!! And did she just call her cameraman a "twink"?!
Bend your Knees. You can do it.
at 3min
"you guys want to see a sick ollie!?"
xD!!
it looks like she has truck risers on.. that could be hurting you if so.
You’re getting better. I’d suggest focusing on improving your ollie before attempting a kick flip. Also, when you’re tired of jumping, ride around on the board and get more confident on it.
In addition to chat just being wrong a lot, it's not a good format for explaining things, and most people don't know how to explain that type of thing. Usually, when we learn to do something physical like that, we're watching someone else, so whatever words they're using have built-in context that they don't have when they're just text. Also, it's incredibly frustrating to keep trying something and feel like you aren't making any progress. Sympathy 100%.
chatters have played the skate games and think its like real skating 😂
Point your toes down as you flick
Playground Mulch, actually OSHA tested for impact cushioning…go figure🥴

skateboarding is so fucking hard its unreal. im like 2 years in ( i skate like 2-3 miles a day when its not snowing) and i still cant kick flip.
you dont have to kickflip either. just because most people go straight to that trick, doesnt mean thats the natural progression of your skating.
im 2 years in too, and can land a kickflip 50% of the time, but only if im wearing certain shoes on a certain board. it can be that specific.
but i focus on no complys and manuals anyways.
@@Inexpressable i dont really focus on tricks outside of like ollies bc im so tired from pushing around everywhere. thats my main problem lmao
Back foot position is wrong.... that's literally the only thing still holding her back
Try placing your back foot right on the edge of the board.
(what happens is that your Pop drags the board backwards, instead of letting it lift upwards)
I'm not a spectacular skater or anything, but I've found that learning is a lot easier while having at least a little bit of forward velocity. You don't have to be flying, but a little bit of momentum helps straighten out your movements.
I'd recommend loosening your trucks a little to get some better spring in your ollie
thats not how that works. you dont get spring from trucks in a ollie. the only trick that tightening your trucks would get you more height or spring on are pressure heelflips lol
@@Inexpressable Oh how long have you been skating?
Here for the fun AND the stache. Glad she's still practicing
Its discoloured skin but go off queen
Never put your hands into the pocket and take of your phone and put it to the side! You cant concentrate with it
how i get this to say 1 minute ago
you need to laser flip before you can do anything
Don't try and flip the board with the sole of your foot try and flip the board with the knuckle of your baby toe
just watch the braille howto videos. i learned switch ollie in like 4 days after not riding for 10 years
why is she skating in a liminal space
You are getting really good! But please dont just stop skating after the kickflip! It is such a theraputic sport once u get into it! PLEASE
T Puds kickflip instructional vid
@Maya Higa: how could u say its wrong how to do a kickflip how that one chatter said it by "sliding" your foot where the bolts are when you didnt even try it that way? The way ricky does it is not the ONLY way to do a kickflip like okay yea thats fine to listen to him and try it the way he says and shows for that stream bcuz he dedicated a video to you which is nice of him to help but if the way he says and shows you how to do a kickflip doesnt work then try the other technique the other chatter said in the next stream bcuz yea i agree with him but he used the wrong terminology cuz you dont "slide" your foot off from the "bolts" of the board you KICK it thats why its called a KICKflip cuz when you ollie you KICK the middle section of the board downwards and it FLIPS the board around and if you try and do it this way instead of rickys way i guarantee you'll have and make way more progress and wont get so frustrated anymore about not being able to just flip the board and just get frustrated more like a real true skater of just landing it cuz every skater pro or not gets pissed off when we dont land tricks but when we do sheeessshhh so i believe you can do it maya just not the way he told u how and i mean if you want i would recommend or suggest looking up other videos on different ways on how to do a kickflip and maybe one of those u can try and will work better for you instead of just only sticking to his way cuz that way may only work fot him not everybody so you gotta look and find and feel what works best for you thats all that matters so its okay if you dont go his route u gave it a good shot and respectfully you feel like you should try a different way than his and he should understand and not be upset so yea i just say try a different way of doing a kickflip that works best for u thats all hope u see this and helps at all
It seems like you need to start with your front foot farther back. Like at or behind the halfway mark of the board. Then as you’re ascending slide your front foot up to the front of the board. (I don’t skateboard btw).
you should definitely go on braille
Maya is mayo
And try rolling while ollie
Yeah don't flick downwards kick it outward but your backside, use the backside of your foot and not the sole and commit to the kick you are mostly cutting it short.
my question is can she properly ollie? if not she will never kickflip
it must be fear of falling holding her back from doing the technique properly. seems like she isn't even trying or something
