      The entire problem with people that are vegan (or other) is that they can never break their "diet" of being 100% vegan.
      They will refuse to go to places or eat things (that they have eaten most of their lives and are some of their favorite foods) just to stay in their cloud.
      If you went to someones house, they made you a great meal and all you ate of it was like the side dish or picked out bits of the food instead of eating it whole while drinking only water (or something else vegan) or complaining in general (because you're vegan), that's more entitled and wasteful than eating the already dead animal that you didn't buy, that was already cooked for you by someone else.

    I went vegan back in 2020 after watching a film called Dominion. I went vegan literally over night, legit donated all non-vegan food to food pantry's and family members. Honestly it was super easy and actually really fun because, I practically had to re-learn how to cook and bake. I never saw it as a negative, I saw it more as an "ooo I get to to be a scientist in the kitchen now!" kind of vibe. FYI: most Indian and Mexican food is very easy to make vegan! When I talk to co-workers and family about my diet they are generally excited and astonished how many things are vegan as well as learning what things are very much not / what is actually in their food. The hardest part about being plant based is looking out for ingredients that "look" vegan. For example, everyone knows gelatin is made of bones, but when you see confectioner's glaze you think "oh like powdered sugar" when in reality it's made of resin secreted by the female lac insect. So in short, being vegan / plant-based is relatively easy just read your food labels really carefully.

    Dried pasta often has no eggs. Fresh pasta can be with or without eggs. Pasta with eggs is normally used for ravioli and similar stuffed pasta and some long pasta like tagliatelle (not spaghetti). The label should say if it has eggs in it, but you can also recognize pasta with eggs by the strong yellow color

      vegans cant eat vegetables though, the amount of fauna killed to make and maintain a plot of veggies would put together in bio-mass about 1,000 cows worth of protein alone. So that leaves you with water, you could make a nice water pancake i guess.

      I’ve been vegan since I was 8 (22 now), for me it’s kind of the opposite, I had a period where I just stopped enjoying food somewhat recently, started cutting out all the processed substitutes, and then most of the foods that are what I call trying to vegan, and eating more stuff that doesn’t try to be vegan but just is, there are so many cultures with lots of food we can eat, if the substitutes don’t work for you, start exploring other cultures and other foods, there’s so much to learn and enjoy!

    I've been vegan myself for about 2 years and it was overnight after watching Dominion and Cowspiracy.
    It's really a pain at first and powdered milk is your enemy, but after a few weeks you figure out which products you can buy. It's all a question of habit.
    And also very important! Pay attention to vitamins such as B12 etc. It's best to take an all-in-one supplement. If you're not already doing it anyway

    I went vegan, full fledged vegan, about a month ago. I had been thinking about it for months, and it was actually watching the stream where Daily Dose visited, and Maya just casually said "oh yeah, you understand because you're vegan", and for some reason that just made it click in my head that I could do it. Way, way easier than I thought it would be, and as a surprise bonus, I feel amazing. I watched a documentary about slaughter houses to really set it in stone. I think about Winnie a lot. Thanks Maya, you're making a difference.

    For a lot of people a gradualist approach works best. I was raised on health food, then went full vegetarian for a big chunk of elementary school/junior high, but then got some bad information in high school and switched to a diet of almost all junk food. After college, I tried going vegetarian again, but for some reason it was much more difficult than when I was a kid, and I’d slip up - there’s meat and fish literally everywhere - and then I’d get discouraged and not try again for months. So the trick, for me, turned out to be NOT getting discouraged after slipping up and having a tuna sammich, but instead telling myself “Oh well, at least I’m 95% vegetarian” and being happy with that. The slip-ups became rarer and rarer, and now I’m full vegetarian again, working on being vegan around 80% of the time, and increasing the stretches of time between when I accidentally eat cheese or ice cream or something. I figure I’ll be full vegan in another year or so! Just accept your own occasional slip-ups, I think is the key, rather than throwing in the towel and thinking “Ah, fuck it,” and going right back to a diet of hamburgers after the first little slip-up.

      This is exactly my mindset, im pescatarian, but I have eaten meat a couple times for the past 2 years I have been. A couple of times it was entirely accidentally, and a couple times were purposeful either for craving reasons or due to being a struggling uni student and preferring getting a larger meat based product to a tiny plant based one. But it is what it is, its my diet and I'm happy with it! Beating yourself up wont do anything unless you know that if you don't you'll slip back into eating meat

      there is vegan "cheese" like cashew butter

    • @danopticon
      @danopticon 5 місяців тому

      @@AlienTraveller9 - There is, but I’m a huge fan of cheese, and the vegan substitutes which aim to duplicate cheese mostly taste like rubber to me. However, instead of finding vegan cheese duplicates, I’ve had better luck finding vegan alternatives - in other words, vegan foods which are their own thing, rather than marketed as imitating cheese - and those can be pretty great: chickpea spreads, flavored extra-firm tofu, grilled mochi, and other yummy things.
      I save a ton of money by not eating meat, so when I have caved and bought cheese, I’ve splurged for fancy French imports from farms where the cows genuinely roam free and wear little berets and are kept entertained with accordion music and Edith Piaf LPs. That is the nice thing about France, is they do tend to value and protect little family farms, and those often offer cows a happier life … but their cheese is *_pri_**-cey!*
      I guess my hope is a day when genuinely humane pasture farm practices - happy cows roaming free and milked by hand - make cheese a humane choice … although artificially inseminating the cows would still be hugely problematic … maybe a farm which hosts all-natural consensual cow orgies? I would pay good money to stay at such a bed-and-breakfast: octogenarian _Madame,_ to your surprise, brings breakfast to your room wearing only a rustic apron, “Bonjour!” she cheerfully cries, flinging open the bedroom curtains, and - BOOM!! - outside, happy randy cows banging everywhere!!
      That would be the life. 🥲

    Two tips for yall thinking about becoming vegan:
    1. There are some essential vitamins/minerals you can miss out on based on what you eat. If youre concerned, find a complete multivitamin.
    2. You dont have to throw away all your non-vegan food, clothes etc. Dumping everything out to "start fresh" is a waste of food and resources. Its ok to gradually move into a Vegan lifestyle. In fact, Id strongly recommend it. 😊
    .....I guess a 3rd point. If you fuck up and eat something that you later realize isnt vegan, dont beat yourself. It happens. Just keep doing the best you can. 👍

    I started out with my vegan journey due to sustainability concerns. As I learned more it became way more about animal welfare.
    I started by cutting out red meat, then most meat. I never liked fish much so I didn’t have to worry about that. Cheese came last due to being a broke college student living off pizza…but eventually replaced that with rice and boatloads of tahini.
    Maya - thank you for sharing your steps towards trying for a veganuary! Working up to it and finding alternatives to your go-to meals is a great way to help making transition!

    Been vegan over a decade. Was vegetarian at the time, but I did go vegan overnight after seeing videos of milk and egg factory farms. Really not hard once you get over the initial hump of doing your research and finding new foods. First note, as many people have said, is that storebought dried pasta is almost always going to be vegan -- only non-vegan thing I see in pasta aisles is egg noodles. Second, people worry about protein too much! It's incredibly easy to include protein in a plant-based diet with nuts, soy products, and all kinds of beans. Most nutrients can be gotten fairly easily (even iron and calcium, which people also commonly express concern over) if you just do your research and eat the right foods; the only one that's usually problematic is B12, which can be easily supplemented. That being said, there's obviously no issue with protein powders, but you probably won't _need_ them if you're only using them because you're worried about protein lost from not eating meat/eggs/dairy.
    Good luck to Maya, I'm glad she's doing this!

    Yehey! Thank you! I have been vegan for 12 years now (for animal rights reason) and not turning back. And seriously even if people don't really like many animals, it's helpful for the environment and the future generations deserve it. I don't take protein supplements (in my earlier years only but not really for long). I just eat beans, lentils, tofu (also TVP) and leafy veggies. Protein substitute had never really been an issue for me even when I was based in the Middle East and I was talking about a few years ago when substitutes were scarce and the word "vegan" wasn't that popular in that area.

    I went vegan like 4-5 years ago, and it’s pretty easy where I live. Most of the supermarkets stock plant-based alternatives. I eat a lot of the same meals, just vegan versions, and for real half of them taste better than what I used to eat (I might have just gotten better at making food)
    It does take a little bit of practice to learn which brands are good and what you can replace things with and sometimes finding a place to eat while out is annoying.
    Before going vegan pretty much all of my meals included some chicken, cheese, or eggs. Swapped to fully vegan over the course of a month or so
    People always say they could never give up cheese but that just sounds kinda pathetic to me, like it’s just a tiny part of what you eat, you’ll be fine. I think people are too addicted to luxury anyway

    Maya as a bug lover what are your thoughts on bed bugs and other parasites

    • @EverythingWentSideways
      @EverythingWentSideways 5 місяців тому

      "You wanna hear something crazy? Bedbug reproduction. So bedbugs have a stabby penis, right? And they don't even aim for female genitalia, they can just stab her and inseminate her anywhere on her body, because there are canals in the carapace to take the semen where it needs to go. Crazier, 50% of the copulation they do is homosexual, 20% is cross species, and only 30% is with female bedbugs. Now, it's a common myth that bedbugs can't tell between male and female bedbugs - WRONG. You see, what happens is when a male bedbug inseminates another male bedbug, that semen goes into the male and gets combined, so when that male inseminates another female or male they get a combination of both. So, the bedbug that stabs the most things the fastest - and they can copulate 200 times a day - has the best reproductive success.
      But it gets crazier. There's a tropical species of bedbug that can shoot semen several centimeters. Now these bedbugs are only a centimeter long, so I did the math, and it's about the equivalent of a human male at 6 feet tall shooting 8 gallons of semen and shooting it over 12 feet. But remember how I said how they can inseminate anywhere in the female's body? They shoot it with a velocity to pierce the carapace of the female - it literally snipes her, from centimeters away. So, 6 foot tall man, 8 gallons of semen, 12 feet away."

I went cold turkey, but I think my advice would be to maybe go 'vegan' half the week and then eat normally the rest of the week (i.e. Don't indulge). Why Vegan and not vegetarian.
    Tldr: denying a (renewable) resource makes the other far worse instead use both and reduce the impact/ self regulate the production by researching where your stuff comes from. Rather than just blanket ones bad so other must be good when both are bad.
    Plants require far more vehicle based maintenance, and require far more Diesel to produce than animals and far far more destruction of land and chemical pollution, (US does things not to best in emmissions for meat production in fairness).
    Buying meats and produce (plants) responsibly in general is better than an exclusive diet as it reduces the demand and stress on a singular resource,
    The demand for a plant exclusive diet inevitably calls for mass importation which on an individual level is your responsibility as you created this demand, due to changes in weather and water supply and to avoid importing we need artificial conditions we make is insanely worse for the environment than meat production as it leads to even more fossil fuels to be burned to maintain the conditions.
    A bit of everything done well is better than hammering one thing as its inevitable that shady stuff will happen, like the 'organic' label on foods.
    Whenever I hear about plant based Diets Its as if people dont think aquatic life is a thing (run off from crop fields even organically produced destroys rivers also illegal dumping of milk as both industries are bad) animal regulations mean that field boundaries have to be a certain distance away to prevent run off from animals damaging the rivers (the run off that occurs is far less).
    Vegetarian using ethically and environmentally safe sourced animal products like eggs and milk is an option that is better for animals and the environment.

      @jonash5102 5 місяців тому +5

      While valid all your points about negative effects of crop production have a major flaw: Most crops aren‘t used for human consumption, but for Animal feeding.
      You also leave out the Animal welfare aspect completely. Most milk producing cows are kept perpetually pregnant to keep producing milk and it‘s Not Like they live out their life outside on a pasture all day.

    • @conormaguire690
      @conormaguire690 5 місяців тому

      @@jonash5102 thank you for not freaking out I was expecting any response to this to be insults.
      American methods of production is far different to the rest of the world and really screws up the metrics like how America corn feeds or zero grazing feeding methods are terrible for quality of product and animal welfare its why its sold really cheap,
      some ethical/ Deemed animal Friendly farms in America produce to a similar baseline standard to other countries which can also improve in this regard aka everyone can improve and continue to improve.
      Free grazing paired automated milking parlours are a far better system for the cows which is made obvious when looking at the cows run for the parlours in the morning with zero outside encouragement.
      For milk production at this point its a genetic issue like with Pugs and breathing issues. Cows and chickens now heavily over produce Which isnt their fault but also by not milking them it punishes the cows as the calves physically cant drink that much hence why alot of milked cows are also left with the calves until the weaning stage it doesnt really reduce the production.
      for the continually pregnant point thats not a great measure and isnt exactly correct as cows arent only pregnant for milk production but also for meat.
      You can overbreed cows and being pregnant is stressful which increases the risk for health. genetic issues and reduced quality of produce so its not in the interest of farmers to have cows pregnant all the time especially with how expensive it is to rent a bull (thousands if not tens of thousands),
      How this is combatted is to have many cows and heavy regulation on welfare and product quality. Look up how much a cow can produce in one session so not an insane ammount of them.
      Cows are pregnant maybe once a year if even and can produce for a very long time (10 or so months) in comparison to other animals and are retired after 2 or 3 years. Its better to say they are continually producing milk.
      If the cow cant produce drinkable quality milk it wont be culled as that its a waste of time and money spent on it. It is often used for raising rejected/ orphaned calves, cows also dont have a massive lifetime (max 20 years but in reality 15) so the beef industry for lifespan which is about 4-6 is often thrown in to prove a point which is misleading.
      Again Im not saying the meat industry is good at the end of the day if money is to be made dodgy stuff will happen no matter who it is

      @@MrTheoptimiserI'm not disagreeing with that at all I just think people view veganism as some kind of panacea when political change is far more important. Let's consider total anthropogenic emissions. Let's say roughly 9.7% of anthropogenic emissions come from fishing and livestock. I'm being generous here as I've included total deforestation in there as well. Energy accounts for 73.2%. In fact, in my country, the government recently agreed to allow access to large deposits of oil. Now, obviously campaigning and veganism aren't mutually exclusive but I think we tend to fall into this trap that the best we can do is change our diet or fly a bit less which is exactly what oil and mining companies thrive on. • @MrTheoptimiser

      @bencutting146 veganism is an actionable change that outside of vanishingly small fringe groups, any individual can make. You're right to say veganism isn't a panacea, but climate can't be solved with it's exclusion. The UN even said that without a shift to a global plant based food system limiting climate change to manageable levels will be impossible. All justice movements work from the grassroots up. Political change (which I agree is essential) is impossible without the public being on board and advocating for it. Just quickly animal agriculture is the single biggest cause of deforestation. It needs space to grow crops to feed animals, and then for the animals themselves. Would mean the world to me I'd you googled "oxford land use study". Happy to talk about this more if you'd like. For my part I apologize for my lack of brevity as well haha.

      I think with the right regulations, chickens can have pretty comfy lives if they are only used for eggs (since they can have a large range, good food, protection from predators and medicine for natural complications/disease). Same for cows and sheep with milk and wool respectively, although unfortunately there are animals that we only use for meat such as pigs (if you don’t count truffles) which might not have a great time if the meat industry collapses.
