Thanks for videos. Always appreciate the viewpoint from an engineering standpoint. I am failing to understand shear walls from how the code book explains them. Never heard of them until I decided to build my own house and now it’s one more thing I have to learn about. Always assumed shear was handled by the sheathing and that was it. How would you know if you need a shear wall? What decides that ? Would love to see a video about that. Thanks. Keep ‘em coming

We've had the oddest build for some of our TS for structural.we were told for the new site ,no trimmers.
That second picture you posted with the small Jacks under the double top plate.we have the TS then the JAcks under it.

I have a three season room with 6x6 header and 6x6 post. Room is 16x11 do I need to add a header or can I just frame it ? It has the old style slat windows from wall to wall 65”tall I want to install regular double pane insulated windows to make it a four season room and add base boar heater

interesting video , ive never heard of the shear wall , seems kinda getto as a building practice , how much could a double 2x10 and a rip of plywood set ya back ? also never heard of trimmer studs , iirc they used to be called kingstuds but today more commonly known as jack studs or jacks , local to my area is i believe over 5ft. is required double jacks and back in the day if you didn't have you RO on the windows you would make the standard size window opening and just double jack them , if your window came out a lil bigger just remove the extra jack studs , good luck

I have an 8 ft sliding patio door, that I am going to change out to a smaller 6ft slider. I've had 4 companies come out and have gotten different advice, and very different prices. Two say I have to go with a new construction slider, and the other 2 say they can remove the sliding doors, measure out specifically and cut the door frame down to size, frame in the side with double 2x4s under the header, then install a replacement slider to match the other one that is being replaced as well, only 5 feet away. Otherwise a new construction and a replacement won't match. We have to do the interior drywall after, and exterior stucco, so I'm nervous either way. Also, I need good quality doors, and don't know what brand to go with. Just had the house tented for termites, so I won't be going with wood.

I would go with the new door, but can see how it could be cut down. Can you find the door manufacture to see if they're still selling products?

Unfortunately even drywall can be used as a shear wall in a building so the lack of wood structural panel may not be enough to know if it is a shear wall or not.

Hey great info. Q: I am reframing a door on and older home, and it's one of those southern style front doors where the door has a glass panel framed out above the door frame. Window is about 36" w X 24" H. Door standard 36X80, framed out with 2X6s. Do they each need a header or if not what does the window need under it to act as a sill/ top of door frame? Thanks a lot

Headers are only required in the wall framing. If that doesn't answer your question, feel free to send me a picture and you can get our email address at the website.
