    i learned how to build houses at Los Angeles Trade Tech. This is how we were taught. Also Larry Haun the Zen Master of residential construction came and gave us some secrets to the trade. These guys in this video are spot on. It should be mandatory in order to graduate with a high school diploma to acquire basic knowledge on building houses and auto repair....MANDATORY!!!

    This HAS TO BE the BEST tutorial I've watched in the construction business. Definition of terms, visual demonstrations as well as discussion of why's and wherefor's is clear enough for anyone to understand. I'm an old lady rebuilding her own kitchen, with some carpentry experience but always refreshing my memory on structural requirements so I'm subscribing and will probably binge watch the rest of your videos just for fun :) Thanks guys!

    I love watching pros work, no matter what industry they're in. The efficiency, the confidence in what they're doing... It's impressive. My trade is metalwork these days, specifically gunsmithing, now that I'm retired from being a shooter... The way he glides around the job is exactly how I am in my shop, and how I was on the job before retirement. Keep up the good work. I came here because it's been a long time since I built a house, and my brother just enlisted me in remodeling his house. We both know how to do it, but he's the carpenter by trade... I'm the soldier. So I'm a bit rusty. I'll be framing windows on Thursday, so I better brush up on the lingo. I was trying forever trying to remember the names of the king studs until I remembered UA-cam.

    You've probably already heard of this, but I prefer nailing the king stud, jack stud, and outer criple, all together before putting them down onto the plate. This just makes nailing them together and flushing them a lot easier since you're not fighting gravity

    Great production, clean. One thing to note: The jack studs holding any header should always in my mind be full bearing to the beam member its supporting. the window liner should butt into the jacks. Framing the liners full length of the beam (headers) you are creating a swell point and crush point as the wood grain is flat the way you have framed it on the bearing point above the post.
    When using 2x materials for headers, pack 1/2 plywood between 2 of the 3 pieces to gain the 5.5 inches for your exterior walls. Another note. 2x8 Headers should always have 4 nails connecting the king studs on the sides to prevent roll of the header off of the posts once loaded with the roof.

    38-year Carpenter here; as long as your top plate and bottom plate match in length with the layout transferred from one to the other, checking for square becomes unnecessary, because, as you already know, when you stand that wall up and plumb one end, that entire wall, every stud, every window opening and every door opening will turn out square! Love the videos man, it's good to see true professionals at work and taking pride in their work! There's just not very much of that going on these days, what, 30% to 40% at best?

    Before you guys were born I was working as a union carpenter on a large apartment complex and was pissed off by the fact that two old men had the easy job of pre-cutting for all the openings. When I needed to frame one I would pick up a package properly marked for that opening. I presume that practice saved a lot of time. Also back then (and possibly today) because we were all paid the same the older, more experienced men wouldn't help the younger ones??

    Good well made straight to the point video's. As a 71 year young still learning carpenter, in my opinion their is to much lumber in walls. You mentioned a second king stud, I think this space would be better served with insulation. I believe the cripples next to the jacks could be removed and replaces with L-70 leaving more room for insulation. Headers are to big for most openings. Its easier framing with a bigger sized headers but less energy efficient. Just my opinion.

  • @tnsoftailrider
    @tnsoftailrider 4 роки тому

    Nice how to video. have learned to add another piece of 2 x ? on the outside of the King stud to allow more backing for a curtain rod, or allow for two jack studs for that extra 1-1/2". It keeps owners from destroying the sheetrock trying to mount the rod support.

  • @davidelliott5843

    In UK we use metric but in the old days of imperial we would stick to inches for things like framing.
    2ft 6ins x 4ft would be 30 x 48. It's unambiguous. whereas mixing ft and ins often can be taken two ways.

    • @bradeley6409
      @bradeley6409 4 роки тому

      That's how windows and doors are measured. You use feet and inches, not just inches.

    • @duketran62
      @duketran62 4 роки тому +4

      Brad Eley It took me a long while to figure 2640 out is 30 x 48. Why wouldn’t we simply use inch, since it is used in almost entirely of framing?

    • @duketran62
      @duketran62 4 роки тому

      I had realized that instead of making 2 measurements to have the lenght of cripple, it is easier, faster if we do math. Since standard jack is 81, take 81-48-1.5= 31.5 (Jack - wo-sill)
