My husband reminded me this morning that we started building our house 2 years ago. We moved in a little over a year ago. Yes it took a good year to build before we could move in. We built it with our own hands, every board and nail. The only worker we hired was the electrician. I give thanks to this channel and a couple of others for the advice, skills, and techniques they share. After moving in, we added 2 porches, and a guest room. We have a wonderful PAID FOR house now that we will enjoy for the rest of our lives.
This is the video I've looked everywhere for! I'm a single mom trying to enclose a garage by myself. Your video answered every question I have. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to do such a great video. Thank you!
I'm a general contractor in Champaign, Illinois, USA and have been watching your videos for awhile now. I just wanted to say thank you for all the awesome lessons. I really like your teaching style. Til next time :)
Shannon, I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate these instructional videos. As a guy who didn't work in construction at any time in my life, your explanations are clear and very informative. Thank you for taking the time to share your extensive knowledge with us.
I'm a teacher and appreciate your teaching style. The best UA-cam videos on home improvement and construction. Logical. Precise. Understandable. Clear stepped by step instructions. My go to videos. Thanks and keep up the fine work.
No fancy musing or intros or special effects here, just good old framing information and know how......... Great videos, big fan of all your creations. Thank you for all the education.
last night after watching the framing one, i built a basement wall in 45 minutes and it worked perfectly. Today, I watched this one and am about to build the doorway on another wall i built. You make this easy. I bougt a book from local DIY store and have sat on this project for months. Your video got me off the couch and motivated.
I wanted to say thank you for you videos. I’m an instructor for a training program in Multi Family Housing. I have the students watch som of your videos after our lecture time and before we do hands on in the lab. This has been a help. Thank you again. Chuck Ketchum.
Thank you so very much for taking your precious time to show us these videos .I may not respond to all but I have watched a couple at this point and your a teacher believe it or not .Thanks again.
Hey I am building a house in the spring, Nova Scotia, I am so happy to find your videos, Awesome. You are going to make me look good, ha. I will tell my friends your the man, thanks Shannon
it is beautifully explained, even for me who do not speak English..I'm from Europe and this kind of construction is new for us...is the best lesson that I saw on the net.
Love your videos; always learn something new from watching them. A can read the info 10x, and maybe I'll remember it. I watch your videos & not only do I remember it, I remember the logic/reasoning behind it because of your videos & explanations. Thanks for posting!
Shannon, I don’t know what your background is, but your clear and precise presentations beat the heck out of most professional corporate communicators. I enjoy watching your videos and have learned a lot. Your work is an invaluable resource for DIYs and, I would not be surprised, quite a few tradesmen.
I liked how you explained it. I could understand and you mentioned the fasteners also which is good. You never know how many you are supposed to put in.
I am listening in from Papua New Guinea. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills with us. Very helpful information. So simple and easy to follow.
Thank you so much for giving so many details about the number of nails, etc... I have a mobile home & pulled the paneling off the exterior wall to install drywall & attach the boxes to the studs, etc... AND found that they installed the exterior door without a header or cripple studs. Just nailed a 2x4 to the 2 regular studs... *sigh* so I was trying to figure out how I could reframe it so it had a header & cripple studs. I am tiny & female so the taking the exterior wall apart by myself seemed like a bad idea. So I figured if I could reframe it properly around the existing "frame" BUT how to do that properly? Your video showed me how I could sister the existing studs with new ones and cut the original ones to make them cripple studs & add a 2x6 header to all of that so I have proper framing in my front door. VERY VERY helpful. If I do it correctly it should work out just fine!
Excellent, detailed, clear, concise video. I needed to tear down a wall and build a replacement, and this video game me all the detailed instructions I needed to do it properly. Thank you!
Hope you are having a perfect summer of 2023 and it's been a superb delight being subbed all of these years ... I see the vids ... and super excited for you to reach that 1 Million mark subs. Cheers Shannon and thanks again for all the education and great vids.
First timer, here. I really appreciate your videos. I am going to tackle replacing a rotted door and partially rotted frame to my garage, and install a sill plate. This door rests on brick which is shared by the front and back side of this rotted door. Thanks again.
Shannon, I can't go try any of your projects! too busy viewing them over and over! Amazing how well you go step by step. Can't imagine a better instruction video! thanks!
I'm getting ready to frame up some interior walls in my basement. These videos are among the best resources on youtube for learning how to frame. Thank you.
great video. I really like your laid-back teaching style but you TOTALLY lost me when you started talking about the window. for future reference, it would have really helped if you had an actual window in front of you so you could show us what/where a jamb is and how to measure it. as it is, I had to stop the video and open another tab so I could google window parts before I could continue this video.
Yes that would help me as well as I've purchased reclaimed windows. They have an overhang in it's metal framing. But I'm hoping he has a focused window video too!! Shannon is such an excellent teacher!!
Kevin Turnyanszki yep, which you learned as well. Just like every single other person. Are you one of those premaddona, negative all the time guys in the job site?
Your videos are perfection. From Arizona USA, thanks so much for the concise and articulate teaching! And thanks to whomever is editing and filming - they are doing it right.
It would be nice to do framing examples for refurbish work also. Refurbish brings lots of extra challenges like having to toe nail, demolition all of which is harder to deal with as opposed to new build. Enjoy your work.
Just wanted to say a big thank you for your wonderful instruction. My father was an incredible carpenter who was trained in England, but unfortunately, he was not as good at explaining his craft. Always wished I had taken more of an interest, but now with your calm and easy going instruction I am understanding so much better. You definitely have my admiration and a new Subscriber.
VERY, VERY GOOD video. I have seen and built a few garages that the short studs were not used over the windows and doors but used 2 x 10's without problems but it probably all equals but also live in a far different area. Thanks again for the refresher. Bud
Nothing wrong with Shannon's train of thought. And as for his explanations you obviously haven't spoken to many builders. Half of them are incoherent -t mumbling away. This guy is refreashing a builder who can build & be easily understood,
Great job Shannon. Thank you so much for the video, and for keeping it online all these years. It was a big help on my current shop project. The video was very well done, and much appreciated.
I have watched lots of other videos and yours seem to always address the details that are needed that the others gloss over. Great job, and I will definitely watch yours first as I encounter each stage of my projects. Thanks!
I never saw a movie on UA-cam how to build with your own hands house with 2 × 10 walls, 2 × 12 floor, 2 × 12 ceiling. Super insulated, envelope ,energy savings for years to come.
Thank-you SO much for your excellent, clear directions & descriptions. Perfect balance between telling us what to do, how to do it, and why you need to do it! I LOVE this channel. My go-to for renovations all-around. Thank-you!
There is only a few builders i will watch and learn, and Shannon is thee top one i will watch, thanks a lot for all the great information, and very well explained, keep it up, and thanks again.
Im a contractor and always watch your videos first when I have questions. I can't tell you how many times you have helped. Always well-paced, thoroughly explained, and very easy to follow. Thanks!
I cannot thank you enough for this video! I am framing the wall with my first window in it and while I have seen this video multiple times I was completely confusing myself hahahaha...just watched it again....now, out to finish that window and wall section!
Great, very detailed video and explanation of framing for windows and doors. I am building a 24 x 24 workshop right now and have only done an 8 x 10 in the past. I feel a bit overwhelmed, but it is coming along.
Shannon I watch your videos all the time and I really appreciate you sharing your extensive knowledge. Your tutorial on these videos is great and easy to follow. Kep up the good work, buddy.
well i dont know anything and these videos are very easy to understand... with explanations for everything he does... thankyou so much for taking the time to make sure that you explain every move you make for us newbies.. usually i would have to watch3 different videos but you explain it all... Barbara
Thank you sooo much for posting this videos. I am a single mom and building one of these would be the most reasonable thing I can do. I am pretty sure I can figure it out with your videos. Thank you. I am sure I will need advise along the way ;)
Thank you for this video! I'll be building a wall with a rough opening for a double-door and two windows on either side, so I'll be referring to this video a lot!
I am always ready to learn from you. I am a builder and construction guy, but still enjoying your beneficial videos. keep it up man. It helps me sometimes very much. All of your video's are like a book, from which we can learn something we forgot.
Love the vids. Informative with no stupid intro fluff and stories about your life and yapping about everything except what the video title says we’re clicking on. Thank you ....this is how “how to” videos are supposed to be done.
Thanks Shannon. Because of your videos my husband & I just built and installed a 4x8 garden closet on the end of my garden shed. We used screws to put it basically together then got a low-end framing nailer (which is amazing) and secured everything. It is square and level. I won't say it was easy for us, but it is a very solid structure. Rafters next! Thanks again! Jean & Ken.
You do a great job explaining the ins and outs of framing. I particularly like the suggestions for making notations on the studs for trimmers, king studs, placement etc. Best of all is your is your demeanor and the gentle way you calmly explain everything. You are not just a professional, but your clearly a gentleman. Thank you.
dude awesome shannon ty, i start a new job framing tomorrow, i havent done it in like 10 years so this is a most informative video for touching up. subscribed!
Just great man ... your a born teacher .. patience , focus and clarity .. you’ve got it all .. I’m ready tomorrow to frame my 2 Nd floor .. I don’t have any windows because there so dam expensive.. and I haven’t decided how many and where right yet .. is it a big problem to make windows and doors if I just frame it first at 24” centre’s with t vek and strapping .. before or after I put my roof on? I’m a painter and sculptor so don’t mind my naivety or whatever .. thanks and I’ll be checking out your channel ..
You could do it that way just be sure you frame properly for the opening when you get windows figured out. Going to easier to frame them first however but your way all work.
great video Shannon you do a good job properly breaking down the process in each of your videos you definitely have been great help to me whenever I need to reaffirm something that I'm doing on the job site
Your videos are great! Thank you. We are building a 8x12 bunkie cabin on a gulf island in BC and your videos are so helpful as we are new to building. :)
Nicely done! I had never heard of "trimmer" before, only jack stud. Learning other terms. Nice. A little slow for me, but okay. I like things a little faster since you can easily go back to re-listen if needed. Thanks for the videos!
Man Shannon you are so helpful. I'm in the middle of rebuilding a wall that is going to hold a 8 foot window that opens 90 degrees and has a bar on the other side. Not only that I found rotten wood in the "L" of an L shaped house that houses a door. Again there are 3 homes in the neighborhood for sale. lol
It’s always good when professionals make such videos rather than those who just figure things out as they go on. This gentleman knows what he is doing…
Thank you. I watched your video on decking and learned so much. My own decking project turned out more than ok as a result. Next big project is the shed, and this helps so much!
Awesome videos, very helpful, thanks a ton! You hit just the right balance of detail, explanation and brevity. Too bad people complain when they obviously didn't even watch or listen to the whole video. I guess some people just need a hug. Keep up the great work and vids!
Thanks for posting the video, awesome step by step for the novice. Building a treehouse for the kids and this is great to watch as many times as I need too :). Thanks from Tennessee.

Hi Shannon About to start my " Man Shed " shortly . Would like to thank you for your video clips "Build a shed "
Thank you!
Glad to help
Hope you are having a perfect summer of 2023 and it's been a superb delight being subbed all of these years ... I see the vids ... and super excited for you to reach that 1 Million mark subs. Cheers Shannon and thanks again for all the education and great vids.

I'm getting ready to frame up some interior walls in my basement. These videos are among the best resources on youtube for learning how to frame. Thank you.
Thanks ,we try our best. Spread the word please
It would help if diagrams are displayed during explation so I can see them in actual diagrams. Thanks
The very best video on putting door and window headers on a wall frame. Thanks!
great video.

Thanks for subbing
can you use screws and no nails.. i would assume it will be stronger with screws
If it is structural framing, then no screws . Unless you use structural screws and not normal deck type screws.
Ok thanks
Daniel Villasenor what size nails for framing 2 x 4?

Dude, I have never built crap in my life, but your explanation made me a pro. Thank you!

I followed Shannon's instructions exactly; I've watched the video 4 times, and the air-conditioner in my car is still not working.
hwoods that's because you need to go home and make a peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwich.
You need the lube.

Im a team leader for Help Build Hope and I've never built anything in my life. This video made me feel confident to show up tomorrow. Thank you.
Thank you. I watched your video on decking and learned so much. My own decking project turned out more than ok as a result. Next big project is the shed, and this helps so much!
I'm been a carpenter for about 10 + years..this guy knows his stuff
Awesome videos, very helpful, thanks a ton! You hit just the right balance of detail, explanation and brevity. Too bad people complain when they obviously didn't even watch or listen to the whole video. I guess some people just need a hug. Keep up the great work and vids!
These are the best instructional framing videos on youtube. Thanks for taking the time to put them together.
Thanks for posting the video, awesome step by step for the novice. Building a treehouse for the kids and this is great to watch as many times as I need too :). Thanks from Tennessee.
Thank you soo much. You are an awesome, patient, thorough teacher.
