5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe & 34067 Tangmere Tackle up Shap 16th March 2024

  • Rare sighting to see Western and Southern Steam in action on the West Coast Mainline tackling the 1 in 75 Gradient of Shap being about a hour between each other.
    First we see Ex-GWR Castle Class 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe hauling the Shap Mountaineer by Vintage Trains coming from Birmingham New Street to Carnforth we the Castle takes it on to Carlisle and back to Crewe.
    Secondly Ex-SR Battle of Britain Class 34067 Tangmere hauling 'The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express by Railway Touring Company coming from London Euston to Carlisle via Carnforth where the Class 86 comes off and 34067 takes it on.
    Location Taken: Shap Wells, Langwathby, Clifton, Brock and Acton Bridge.

    Why was the Castle allowed to run unassisted, but the Bulleid not?
