Johan you have reviewed the Marshall Lead 12 but have you played the one year only Lead 15? It was made between the last year of the Lead 12 and the newer MG series. It has a two pot control pregain stage instead of just the jacks, a master volume, and spring reverb. The speakers in the cabs are no name crap but plug the head into any other speaker cabinet and it rocks! See if you can find one and run it through the paces. Marshall Lead 15 microstack. Not the Newer MG series.
EVM and JBL sound very good with a bit of toppy rasp coming from the Celestions. Sounds like it would make for very versatile range of tones at different guitar volumes and tone settings. Very nice (nasty) amp.
Excellent work Johan! I have thought another using a 4x12 marshal with only two speakers (as in the top cab of your demo). Does that sound pretty good compared to a dedicated 2x12 cab in your opinion? My motivation would to have a less loud cab with speakers working harder for bar gigs and places where you can’t be too loud. Appreciate your work and guidance! Thank you!!
Cool comparison to show how mixing speakers can get awesome guitar sounds. I assume you were using the same mics placed at the same point of each speaker(near the center of voice coil or towards the edge?). For my needs I liked the 65 & the EVM-12L best on their own, but really loved the mix of the G12H-30 with the EVM-12L. That captured the crispness with some lower mids that I really like. I also liked the combo of the V30/65/EVM/JBL-it's a very full response that would work in many mixes because having the ability to push certain speakers up in the mix. Like when you want to stick out more, just boost the JBL or V30 and you're there. I often forget that the V30 is a worthy speaker-probably due to my preference for the late 70's/early 80's G12H-80 with a 444 cone(T2876/T3103). All of the speakers sounded pretty good though I would choose not to use a JBL unless its dust cap has been replaced. The metal dust cap that JBL & Altec use has a top end that worked great in an era before PA systems actually worked. In today's world they have too much top end unless you take the mic way off the center of the cone. Some Fane speakers might have been interesting in the mix, but they're harder to find working. An Altec 417C would also be classic speaker to mix in.
Thanks! I Miked them where the dust cap meets the cone. E906 on V30, G12-65 and G12T-75. SM57 on EV, 548 on Greenback on M-160 on JBL. They really need different mics
G12 80's from 1979 forward to mid 80's are absolutely the finest guitar spkrs, I have 2 small checkerboard model 1982 from 1979 loaded with 80's and they roar, also have lots of g12 m black backs 65s 70's G12 H 30 55hz, EVM 12L black label 300 watts JBL etc The 80's are by far the best
Hi Johan, did you ever tried the Jimi Hendrix Plexi Mod? Supposedly a modification Jimi Hendrix used to carry out on all his Marshall 100w amps was to change the tone stack to a 33k/500pf resistor and capacitor combination, provided the amp didn’t already have this tone stack. This rumour was verified when the owner of the JTM 45/100 used extensively by Jimi Hendrix was given to Marshall by a Mr. Dickinson who bought the amp after Jimi’s death, and it was found to contain this sole modification. Assuming your JTM 45/100 or similar early 100w Marshall amp has the 56k/250pf tone stack combination, you have to change that replacing 66k to 33k and the 250pf to 500pf. If you have a comparative video of this mod can you send me the link? thank you. Nico.
Some of the speakers don't sound good to me without being specific, though I must admit, in a mix it could be a different story. It makes me wonder some times when I have my amp cranked in the studio, not mic'k, and it sounds fantastic, what if it doesn't sound as good mic'k. I prefer the tight sound of an amp closet and my studio does not have one, though I might be able to create an environment sounding similar. Thank you for the content. I love learning.
The G12h was so good but I surprisingly really liked the EVM12L by itself! What do you think about the Celestion G12 K100 (the newer ones)? Do they do a similar thing that the JBLs do or would you say they are very different? Thanks!
A Flying V has never looked cooler then the picture for this video. Very cool ideas. Why if I was a rockstar Johan would have to be on my pay roll for something. He’s a hidden Jem.
Hi Johan, when you mic up the speakers are you mic ing the ‘sweet spot ‘ on the cone (slightly off centre) or are you placing the mic in the centre? Also which mic do you use, SM57? Do all speakers have the same type of mic on them? I was particularly surprised by the sound of the Greenback. Great work thanks!
Thanks! I put the mic where the dust cap meets the cone. I used e906 on the V30, 65 and 75, 548 on the Greenback, SM57 on the EV and M160 on the JBL. E906 and 548 are equally bright. The EV needs the added top end of 57 and the JBL needs the high end roll off off the ribbon. Cheers
Interesting that you have G12T-75 there! Many don't like it at all! Even "tone authorities" I might call them without irony, people who built rigs and have solid ears for tones, often dislike it, back then and today as well. I approve though, I've always liked the speaker in my use, just need to turn the bass almost off for my Laney amp. Gotta say, those G12-65 and EVM really sound nice though. Separate AND together. EVM was like louder and punchier version of 65 to my ear (mids got more emphasized than highs). Surprised how the greenback sounded in this comparison. Not at all to my liking, but in the mix of speakers it complemented the others well. V30 also sounded boring. Like all the spirit was taken away when it was V30's turn. And even G12T-75 that I've played the most surprised me, positively. Didn't expect it to sound this nice with this amp. In the end it seems like this comparison revealed more about my preference than about the actual speakers. I would totally make a combination of 65 and greenback (but never greenback alone). Or EVM with something. Currently I have 65 and 75 cabs and they are ok together. Greenback would perhaps bring more spirit combined with one of them though. Now I need to probably hunt some EVM like speaker. I think greenback, 65 and EVM were the perfectly balanced combination. 65 and EVM alone was still a bit honky, but when you add Greenback to them!
@@JohanSegeborn that's why I think it's just a great all round speaker. I have the modern 12L and it sounds great with all my amps (Vox, Marshall, BF Fender, Tweed Fender and Two Rock). I've never had a chance to play one of the older 12Ls, but I'd love to try one some day.
How surprised am I, the Greenback and JBL really did not sound good to me. My favorite was the G65, by a wide margin and the EV surprised me with not being what the JBL turned out to be.
JBL are not crap, they just sound different. They go a 1000 or so Hz higher than a Celestion so the amp settings have to be adjusted to suit. But a speaker with a 4 inch edge wound aluminum voice coil with a 12 pound magnet in a cast aluminum frame is hardly crap.
@@DMSProduktions it was put there, along with using the aluminum voice coil, to turn the 130A into a full range speaker, D130, for mono hifi use in the early 50s. The 12” 131A became the D131, then It then got carried over into guitar use when JBL got used by Fender as the D120F. I’ve always wondered what they’d sound like with a cloth screen cap like Celestion, or a paper dust cap.
I was surprised by the hated G12T75 sound, very good on all counts and LOUD. Test also confirmed JBLD130 is NOT a Metal speaker, while same area (originally PA speaker) EVM holds its own.
Best combinations, for me, are when you combine two sharp once with two dull once. JBL, Greenback, V30 and even a G12T75 being sharp and EVM12L and G12-65 being dull. Oldie but goldie G12T75 being fairly balanced to be honest. This all OFC take in with specific versions of speakers while same speakers in 8 and 16 Ohm do not sound the same.BTW order of speakers mentioned are for me order of high end content in the overall sound of a speaker. I love midds and bass but high end defines speaker breakup and distortion in this kind of a setup. Midd's give it a body and structure.
Dear Johan, what pickups are on Gibson? Original T tops? Any alternative (similar pickups) recommendation that we can buy easy today and have the same sound/output? Thanks
Hi Costis! Yeah it’s got the stock T-tops. I use Burstbuckers 1and 2 in my other guitars for that tone. This one is a bit warmer sounding though. Cheers
Christina Carducci I have a late 70s twin reverb. the overdrive or distortion sound is not good. If i wanted to get a better overdrive sound what speakers would i get. it says 135 watts on the back of the amp. what ohms and what watt speaker? what type of speaker? Ive heard a less efficient speaker would break up any advice is greatly appreciated thanks
This test proves that the G12 H 30 55hz 16ohm driver with the bass cone is a very bright speaker as well as the V30, large magnets both bass cone both very bright
Interesting demo... I really like Greenbacks (have one combined with a Creamback in my Splawn setup, sounds great) but man this demo makes them sound terrible when they're on their own.
"what speakers do you use in your box?" Johan: "yes." lol :o) don't like the JBL, this damn thing just hurts my ears, and the G12H alone sounded **** too here. and I missed a G12M Greenback... however, excellent video as allways. very useful combinations here, some I liked more, some less, but that is a matter of taste, no? :o)
Most of my speakers get an amplifier of their own, except for special needs amps, and I can adjust each one for maximum tone. My EVMs are dialed up to quite a screech, as far as I can tell. I can ask the neighbor.
Just heard it via a cheap headset, but the Greenback on it's own sounds complete shit in each example...So what do we get out of it: The more flavours you mix, the better it gets.
I chased tone my whole life... $1000s spent buying different pickups and effect pedals. all the time it was my speakers that were the problem. I never realized how much speakers effect your tone.

G12 80's from 1979 forward to mid 80's are absolutely the finest guitar spkrs, I have 2 small checkerboard model 1982 from 1979 loaded with 80's and they roar, also have lots of g12 m black backs
65s 70's G12 H 30 55hz, EVM 12L black label 300 watts JBL etc
The 80's are by far the best
If you have a comparative video of this mod can you send me the link? thank you.
Nico.
Hi Nico, that would indicate that Jimi was influential in the 1968 modifications of the lead amps. Cheers!
@@JohanSegeborn OH that´s awesome. Thank you Johan.
Thanks!
Hat was the overall impedance from the cab?
A Flying V has never looked cooler then the picture for this video. Very cool ideas. Why if I was a rockstar Johan would have to be on my pay roll for something. He’s a hidden Jem.
Thanks Dan! :-)
This is why Johan is the most interesting Guitar obsessive on U tube !!!!!
Thanks David! :-)
Thanks! Yeah G12T-75 is indeed a classic speaker
That EV12L sounds so good. It would be hard to run that JBL on its own.
That was my pick too!
Most balanced one indeed
@@JohanSegeborn that's why I think it's just a great all round speaker. I have the modern 12L and it sounds great with all my amps (Vox, Marshall, BF Fender, Tweed Fender and Two Rock). I've never had a chance to play one of the older 12Ls, but I'd love to try one some day.
I think I'd love to have the Vintage 30 sharing a cab with a Greenback.
Johan’s cab of doom!
Cheers ;-)
How surprised am I, the Greenback and JBL really did not sound good to me. My favorite was the G65, by a wide margin and the EV surprised me with not being what the JBL turned out to be.
JBL are crap!
@@EdwardT9 It's that CAP that makes it harsh sounding! (And it's ALUMINIUM!)
@@EdwardT9 I reckon they would sound a lot smoother!
my kind of stack ;-)
Cheers ;-)
I was surprised by the hated G12T75 sound, very good on all counts and LOUD. Test also confirmed JBLD130 is NOT a Metal speaker, while same area (originally PA speaker) EVM holds its own.
The G12H Greenback in this video can’t be functioning properly.
Thanks!
@@JohanSegeborn Your videos are always great. Pleasure to watch. Thank you!
Cheers

I have a late 70s twin reverb. the overdrive or distortion sound is not good. If i wanted to get a better overdrive sound what speakers would i get. it says 135 watts on the back of the amp. what ohms and what watt speaker? what type of speaker? Ive heard a less efficient speaker would break up any advice is greatly appreciated thanks
Celestion is the way 😀
EVM for the win
Do you match impedance - what impedance were you running from the combinations
I had two Marshall JMP 50w combos, one sounded terrible, like a transistor amp. It was the speakers that ruined the sound, both the amps were good.
People say that greenbacks are not trebly, they are great but they have more treble than the others or not?
This test proves that the G12 H 30 55hz 16ohm driver with the bass cone is a very bright speaker as well as the V30, large magnets both bass cone both very bright
Yeah they’re both pretty sparkly
Sometimes I see that you use the Iron man 2, or the THD Hotplate, do you have a preference?
Hi, The Iron man 2 is the most transparent
Single JBL and Greenback (for me)
Interesting demo...
Thanks Frank! :-)
What is the box with the green light on top of your Marshall amp?
It's a Tone King Ironman II attenuator
The JBL is my favorite by faaar
Green EVL 12L sounds the best
Most of my speakers get an amplifier of their own, except for special needs amps, and I can adjust each one for maximum tone. My EVMs are dialed up to quite a screech, as far as I can tell. I can ask the neighbor.
;-)
no Blue 😭
They’re great off course but it would take down the power handling too much for a 100W amp
Круто ))
Just heard it via a cheap headset, but the Greenback on it's own sounds complete shit in each example...So what do we get out of it: The more flavours you mix, the better it gets.
Yeah they complement each other very well
